Smokey Bones is a place I've been going to since I was a kid and it's definitely had its changes, but has also stayed the same in good ways! I love their ribs and burgers and especially their hot donuts! The quality of the food is always there but I will say the portions could be a bit better at times. As far as the inside goes, it's incredibly nice and very clean. I would not recommend doing take out for them because eating inside is a treat itself! This place was good when we were here last year and what a disgrace it was this year. 5 of us, we all had the Texas beef brisket and it was 90 percent pure fat!!!!!! Got a To go order. Not sure why anyone would ever eat here. I spent $45 on brisket Mac and cheese and a slice of chocolate cake. The Mac n cheese tasted like the Stouffers microwaveable Mac and cheese. The cake was okay, but I paid extra for ice cream and they did not include it. My boyfriend and i absolutely love this place. We've had our share of issues here, from cold food to servers not being able to use their time wisely. But all in all, we've had mostly good experiences. the one issue we see the most when we're there is....management. Or should I say the lack there of? I've never once seen them doing table checks, just coming by to see how things are going, you know, get ahead of any issues or just show face? they're always sitting in the office which we can see into from the door, or up at the bar. It was OK, nothing spectacular, nothing special, nothing that made me think I need to come back. The place was DEAD, there was 5 other tables in the restaurant and pickup was not busy. Lots of staff running around but none really working. Frankie the Bartender was friendly but attentiveness is not a strong suit. Management was no where in site, or if they were it was not known. ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE! I'm a frequent customer at this location. And I'll be honest...it's been bad more than good. The last few times have been borderline; at best. But, for the love of god, will somebody at the corporate office come down to this store and get rid of the people running it, and START OVER! There isn't a single one there worth keeping. This evening, I ordered a half rack of baby back ribs / baked potato / fries. (After all, that is what you specialize in right?). I drove all the way up there for a pickup at 6:05. And I was expecting the norm of confused ppl / wrong orders / being ignored at the counter. And I was shocked when a woman actually greeted me and asked what was name was. I thought...hmm, maybe it'll be better(?). Needless to say, I was wrong. She went in back, came out front and said, "it'll be a few more mins." Okay, fine...I can wait. A minute later, some woman in a sweatshirt / no uniform / no name tag comes out and says, "we don't have what you ordered." She then asks if I would be okay with St. Louis style ribs? No. I would not. I don't care for that type of rib. (The idea that the person working your front counter doesn't know the difference in ribs is alarming. Do you train these people???). I explain that I don't care for the larger ribs, I prefer the smaller. But she is clueless on the different types. I actually had to stand in the lobby and explain the difference. If nobody is aware...I'm the customer. Then, there's another employee standing there...and I'm not sure what's going on there. Is there a makeup / costume policy at Smokey Bones? Are there standards on what you can wear / how you can dress? If not, there needs to be. Because that outfit / makeup is wholly unacceptable in a business environment. Finally, the young lady goes in the back to talk to the manager. She comes back and says, "we can't use your payment online, so you'll need to pay again." What!? Why? Then she tells me it will be $27! The original one was $18. Just so I'm clear. You sold something you didn't have. You made me drive all the way up there to pick it up. The woman at the counter could not have been LESS personable. (You could circle the earth and struggle to find somebody with a more repugnant personality. And she is the FACE of your restaurant? C'mon!). And then I have to take something I don't want, and pay $9 more, before the gratuity? Umm. NO. Therefore, I politely asked for her name. And she just stood there mute, and then turned and walked away. No joke. That's probably THE WORST customer service experience I can remember in a LONG time. And even worse, you took my money, and gave me nothing. No refund. I finally just decided it's not worth the battle and left. On the way home, I called and asked to speak to the manager. I won't list his name, as I'm sure somebody there can figure it out. But if he is the leader you have, there is little wonder why the service is such a mess. That conversation was ridiculous. He told me, he's not happy with the things she did. And he'll "talk to her." He said he'll issue a refund. No worries, sir, I issued a chargeback with my bank this evening. Save yourself the trouble. And, as I promised on the phone, I put some shrimp in a toaster oven, and logged onto Yelp. And tomorrow, I'll figure out who owns this mess of a restaurant, and call their Corp office. For those blissfully unaware of how customer service works. Here's a synopsis of how it should have gone. 1.). You don't sell items you don't have. Here in Michigan, we call that "fraud." 2.). If you accidentally run out of an item, you call the customer, (before they drive there), apologize, and offer a suitable replacement. 3.). You don't tell the customer, "it'll be a few more mins, and run out the door...when you KNOW you don't have the food they're there to pick up. 4.). Uniforms and name-tags are mandatory. If you don't have either, don't punch in. 5.). Standing mute when a customer asks your name is wholly inappropriate. 6.). Walking away from a customer is abysmal service and worthy of immediate termination. 7.). Trying to charge a customer $9 more for a meal you don't have, leads me to believe that you should (seriously) consider an immediate Mgt change. 8.). Refusing to refund the customer's money, and angering them enough to file a chargeback w/ their bank is absurd. 9.). Having the mgr hide out in back and refuse to come up front to deal with a challenging situation is unacceptable. 10.). The fact that nobody apologized is simply beyond belief. 11.). Had this been an organization I ran...i would have profusely apologized / comped whatever they wanted, and had it delivered to their house. 12.). "Ms. Terrible attitude" and "Mr. Inept manager" would be termed first thing tomorrow morning. read more

I want to preface this by saying that this was a few weeks ago, and that our server was great- super friendly and helpful, but unfortunately it wasn't enough to offset the issues with the manager and the food. The food took a while to come out- about 40 minutes after ordering. We also had two things that weren't made correctly, which was probably just the fault of the kitchen staff, but hey- that kind of stuff happens. I get it. We had to send those things back to get remade because, quite frankly, it just wasn't what we ordered. My husband and his mother were upset that they had to wait an additional 15 minutes for their food, so we just wanted a fair discount on those two meals to make up for that inconvenience, as this was supposed to be a stress-free family celebration. Shortly after, a skinny bald manager with a bad attitude (we found out later his name was Brad) went to our table to offer his "apologies," but it was clear that he didn't care about us as customers or that some of us had to wait an hour for food. He was snarky and condescending, and we were just trying to be nice and reasonable. His behavior was completely unacceptable and we will never be going back again because of it. I feel sorry for the servers and other employees that have to put up with that guy. Back to the food, it was sort of obvious the wings were sitting under the heat lamps for a while because they were a little cold and stale, but everything else was alright despite the mixup. Definitely not worth the high prices or the time it took to drive out to where this place is located. More to fill in later but as a quick update I would have to say the service was absolutely five stars . I believe the service name was Kevin attentive is an understatement and especially knows how to uptalk and up sell the menu our group wound up having a starter and a dessert which we would not have otherwise ordered without his passion and technique. This was not just marketing but a genuine belief in the products along with extremely courteous and prompt service. However... what I will say is the two items he up sold us on we're absolutely phenomenal the cornbread was extremely moist and in its own personal pan,.. and the fresh cinnamon sugar donuts for dessert with raspberry dipping sauce..... We're absolutely amazing Cider Mill Donuts made fresh for your table in the middle of summer !!! ..to get you that fall craving. Entree and Ambiance were subpar 2 average. Essentially is a chain Applebee's type of feeling but with a Industrial BBQ joint flare. And the one thing you would count on having at this place which was ribs...... sadly we're average to say the least. It tasted a little bit Hammy with absolutely no smoke ring ..and fell off the bone like pulled pork... no tug. That being said the only reason to go back would be the excellent service and sides. Worst food ever!!! Don't go here, taco bell has better food. Brisket was burned and couldn't get forking it, there was no meat to eat. 1/2 chicken was smaller then my hand, vegetables were cold and had to find waitress to get silverware and rest of our food. When I complained, nobody cared. I said I should have gotten tacos because those looked better than my food. Big fat waste of money. I promise to never visit again. It's Monday and my AMEX card had an offer for $10 cash back on $40 at Smokey Bones, so we ordered BOGO smoked chicken wings (16x2=32), regular fries, sweet potato fries, fried pickles, baked beans, and two side salads for $51. ($41 after the cash back offer!) We got four sauces on the side and we wished they had labeled them. They were Blackberry Bourbon, Jager BBQ, Kansans BBQ, and Mango Habanero. One of them (Either Blackberry Bourbon or Jager BBQ) tasted like the alcohol didn't cook out all the way. The other three were all pretty good though. The food, ribs and chicken were served refrigerator cold. I tried for 15 minutes to get my waitress's attention. She was busy having a personal conversation with a friend. By the time she came over to ask about our food, we had passed a manager's time deadline. She became argumentative with myself and others at my table when we insisted that our food was not just room temperature, but actually cold. She insisted that the food was so hot when she served it that she actually burned her hands on our dinner plates, which I consider to be a lie. The manager was no where in sight as she told us he said we had the food at our table too long before we complained...therefore, nothing could be done. Our window of opportunity to complain had passed. We were out of luck. I paid the bill but I will never, ever, ever go back to any Smoky Bones ever again. Where do I start? I have tried to give this place multiple chances to win me over but every single time I am disappointed. I ordered take out last night and I was pleasantly surprised that my order was ready to go 10 minutes before the pick up time on my email receipt. While this is a good thing, it can also be not so good. Normally I arrive shortly after my pick up time to avoid having to wait- so in this case had I arrived at the suggested pick up time my food would have been sitting for 10 minutes. Moving on. I was encouraged by a notice stapled to my bag from the General manager- Most notable was this: "My team and I value your feedback. If for any reason you are not satisfied with your order, please reach out to the restaurant directly. We will do whatever it takes to make it right." Followed by contact info. Now to my order: 8 pc smoked wings with bbq sauce- They tasted good enough but they were barely sauced. If you order these you might want to get extra sauce. Skillet Cornbread with Honey Pecan Butter- Great cornbread but unfortunately it did not come with the butter that I think makes it taste so good. Loaded Nachos- I ordered these without tomatoes and cilantro and had the add chicken. I received a heap of chips, a little cheese, a bit of chicken and a pile of green onions. No salsa, jalapeños or sour cream as stated in the menu description. Needless to say the green onions over powered everything and I tossed it in the trash. Macaroni and Cheese- One word- DRY. Well on hour #2 of waiting for my food. Truly unacceptable right now. Weren't prepared for super bowl rush so orders got so fat backed up that it will be over 2 hours for my food. Said I would wait for my food but I expect a refund after waiting 2 hours and manager said I could do one or the other but I won't be getting a refund because I am "choosing to now wait longer". It has been two hours and 8pm on a Sunday and Lansing with not limited options. Unacceptable customer service from the a manger especially when the very next girl who comes in and is upset she tells her that she will refund her money, she will leave with something, and will give her a free meal the next time she comes in. Wait what? You just told me that it wasn't an option for both but now you are giving her her food, refund, and a free meal. Food was good. However, went in on a weeknight. It was very slow in there. I sat at the bar and was the only one and it took five minutes before the bartender noticed I was there got my drink got my food thought we were on the right track then she disappeared right after bringing my food and never came back to askabout another drink, more water, desserts, or anything. I sat for probably 25 to 30 minutes with no contact and was almost ready to walk out before she finally came back and asked if I wanted another drink. "Sara" had been sitting at a table on the other side of the bar with her other coworkers, just chatting it up and ignoring the customers. read more

This review should be titled "lower your expectations". But maybe they just don't know how to handle a group of 17 diners? Hard to say. What I do know is that service was spotty at best - missed orders for appetizers, rushed inquiries about drinks, at least three of our group (including me) had woefully substandard dinners tonight. I'll just speak for myself. I ordered the pork chop with sides of fire roasted corn and loaded mashed potatoes. The chop I received - supposedly brined for 24 hours ahead of time was dry and bland. Mind you, it was delightfully thick and would have been good if it had any flavor whatsoever. Alas, that wasn't the case. Add to this the topping on my loaded mashed potatoes was more a lump of cheese and other stuff than anything appetizing. The fire roasted corn, on the other hand, was tasty, although quite possibly canned. If it was just me, I probably would have brushed it off as not handling large groups poorly. But the wait person - a young lady who gave many of us the impression that she was rushed and impatient - had to be reminded of at least two of our appetizers and delivered one twice.
