I don't even know how to start my experience at this restaurant. Everyone had really hyped it up which made us excited to try it, but I will never go back. I ordered the chicken wings, which came out covered in small hair/fur. As I mentioned to the waiter that my chicken wings had hair on them he just casually said "ohhh it must jut be from the feathers on the chicken" which made me not order a new set and just left me leaving $50 down and hungry. These folks catered my brother's wedding in DeWitt - the meat and sides were definitely on point. The serving/carving folks didn't skimp on the portions, which was another plus. The turkey, beef brisket and pulled pork were flavorful and the sauce selection really added to the flavor. I was also a fan of the creamed corn and beans. A disinterested bartender has done an incredibly poor job of paying attention to people sitting only three feet away (there are only eight people currently at the bar!). It's taken way too long. Things have gone down hill drastically since they appeared on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. I guess they figure that business is so good, that they can let the little things slide and it won't hurt their bottom line. If you are going there looking for one of their specials, don't bother because they'll most likely be out. And they don't tell you until after you've sat down. I guess they figure that since you've gone through the hassle of finding a parking spot and the usual long wait times, you won't leave if they don't have what you want. Meat used to be my go to BBQ joint, but not anymore. There are other BBQ places in the Lansing area with better food, easier parking and WAY less wait time. If you want great customer service, easy parking and awesome food, try Crossroads BBQ in Grand Ledge. They blow Meat away in EVERY category. Big fan of the fatty brisket, the smoked turkey, and all of the potato products (including the meat mountain). This place can get really busy at lunchtime during the week, and it's popular enough that they still run out of certain meats if it's been a busy day, so go earlier if you can. When I've sat outside on the patio and asked for the draft list, I've gotten mixed reactions: sometimes I'll be pleasantly surprised when a server passes me a written list of the current draft, but I've also been told "I don't know, go look inside for yourself." Once a friend asked the server to surprise him with a stout, and then was never told what beer he actually got. Still one of the best places to go for food in the Lansing area. read more

I thought that my $10 burger was a bit small for its price, but other than that, it was pretty good! I ordered the chin-gorilla which tasted like a regular burger except for the cheese spread. Man... That cheese spread was a game changer! I'm not even a big fan of cheese, but I found it made the burger unique and delicious! Wow! Don't judge this book by its cover. From the outside it looks a little questionable, but the food and atmosphere are great. They have a decent tap list, clean restrooms and MEAT! The food was great! Good prices and generous portions. You won't leave hungry. I'm so glad my husband found his place. I've been to "Meat" a few times now: I've had two different pulled pork sandwiches, one with blue cheese, one without, and had their Macaroni and Cheese (with Bacon and Blue Cheese Crumbles). To my taste the best thing so far has been their fantastic mac-n-cheese. I mean, it's really good. Also their sauce selection is fun and tastes great. They have 6 sauces that they'll exuberantly explain to you if you ask. Their beer selection is quite good. They always have great beer by the bottle and a small draft selection. They don't serve coffee (despite it being written on the board/wall. Their wait staff is a bit bumbling but hardworking, very pleasant, and so far very attentive. Meat Southern BBQ and Carnivore Cuisine is one of the better local restaurants in the Lansing Metro; thus the the 5 star review. Although in all honesty, if this restaurant was located anywhere else (Ann Arbor, Detroit, Grand Rapids, Traverse City...) it wouldn't merit the full five stars. And, that's really because of a few things. First their food is good but nothing to die for (except perhaps the mac-n-cheese which isn't a carnivore cuisine per se; and it's also mac-n-chesse, so you know, big whoop...) and the second is they are priced a little bit steep; nine dollars for a sandwich is fine but, 12 for a burger is high and 11 dollars for the mac-n-cheese is a bit steep too. Although the portions sizes are good. I'll keep coming back. The fact that Lansing has essentially no decent casual dining restaurants means good restaurants like "Meats" can get away with charging a little extra (and so they do). read more

Probably some of the better food I've yet found in Lansing. Service was good other than being slow. It wasn't as busy as it first appeared and we were able to get patio seating. Coworker ordered the Classic Chopped Brisket sandwich and Blue Cheese Potato Salad and seemed very happy with both. I ordered the Double Heifer sandwich and upgraded my side to the Disco Fries. The sandwich was tasty albeit sloppy, but that's pretty much a given. The Disc Fries (fries, Bacon Gravy, Bacon, and Cheese) were good but HOLY HARDENED ARTERIES! I'd say it was about 10% cheese, 40% fries, and 60% gravy. About 2/3 of the way through it felt like I had eaten a 5 gallon bucket of gravy. I think I heard my heart wheezing a little. Delicious, but a more apt name would be "Tin of Insurmountable Shame". Did I mention there was gravy on the sandwich, too? I'll be back, but I'm probably going straight meat next time. Almost forgot! Here's my take on the sauces: Black magic- like a sweet stir fry sauce Vin #666- like a mix of vinegar and Italian dressing Jazzy Q- I'd say a mix of sweet bbq sauce and chili powder and possibly adobo sauce Carolina mustard- like a puréed stone ground mustard. One of the best mustard bbq sauces I've tasted Hot garlic- definitely Franks hot sauce, garlic, and a little extra something. read more

This place is absolutely amazing. I've been here multiple times and I am never disappointed. I've even had to do the forty minute wait and I didn't even mind because I know the food is worth waiting for. I always get the wings because they are TO DIE FOR, but I've tried the other meats and they are also very good. I love the black magic sauce and the jazzy q is my second favorite. My cousins brought me here while I was visiting town. Leave it to the Midwest to bring the best Mac and cheese I've ever had. Tried some brisket off my cousin's plate and it was super flavorful and tender. Shared the trailer park bruschetta as an appetizer and that was the standout. The crispness in the fried onions and potato skins against the creaminess of the pimento cheese and potato, the salty grease factor from the chorizo, the slight kick from the jalapeño - it was a perfect marriage of flavors and textures. Please don't take it off the menu! I also had the chingorilla sandwich with pulled pork, sides of fries and Mac. The fries were seasoned and prepared well - crisp and salty enough that you don't need sauce or ketchup. The sandwich was a great combo - I was a big fan of their pimento cheese and the pineapple added a great sweetness to it. Loved the bun it was on and the pork itself was tender and moist. Meats is our favorite restaurant in Old Town. Great location. Nestled between locally-owned shops, near the river. Outdoor seating in front. Inside, the place is very small with a descent size bar. TV's in the bar can also be seen from the dining area. The place is usually packed and you'll probably have to wait for a table. Lunch time isn't quite as busy. Their meats are AMAZING! My husband and I usually split something and even then, can't finish it all. Tender, flavorful, plentiful. Also, PLENTY of delicious BBQ sauces to sample. Good sides to choose from. This place is pretty awesome. Definately one of our new favorites. The meat is all excellent, truly smoked and tender. I loved the array of sauces and just couldn't decide which was my favorite. I think my mouth is watering just writing this. Its absolutely one of the best places in lansing. There is some room for improvement. I've been 3 times and they never have the biscuits which are advertised with the meals, and no replacement. It kind of feels like you are getting taken advantage of to read a certain price on the menu and never get a part of your meal. That said, its not like you are going away hungry. The sides are another area that I think could be improved. The corn (mayonaise/spicy) is good and basically elote in a cup, the macaroni and cheese is excellent and the baked beans are good too, though they were too spicy for my kids. The cole slaw and blue cheese potato salad were not really worth eating, the slaw had no flavor and the blue cheese potato salad was very bland. I just ate more ribs instead though! Since I'm not in lansing a lot I will write an review. This place is the bomb.com. Both me and my date where very pleased with the staff and service. I mean with a name like meat how can you go wrong? I had the beef brisket sandwich that was delicious and my date had the half of slab ribs with fried corn and garlic mashed potatoes and it was very tasty as well. Plenty of beer on tap,some I never heard of which is what I like,trying new things. The staff was helpful which is a huge plus for me and very friendly. Ordered takeout from Meat tonight. The menu offers a lean or fatty cut brisket dinner. I asked the order taker what would he recommend and he said definitely fatty cut. Ok, I ordered 2 brisket dinners with 2 sides each. The dinners came with 2 slices of brisket each. Out of 4 slices of brisket only 2 slices (and I'm being generous) were edible. The brisket didn't resemble the brisket as shown on their website and I'm sure "Guy" was not served the same quality of brisket that I was served. We arrived about an hour before closing when they had already run out of a lot of stuff, so I'm willing to give them another chance earlier in the day and hope to have a better reaction. The staff and service were excellent. No complaints there. The menu is good but I have one suggestion. I really wanted some pulled pork with a side of Buffalo fries, but was told I could only get plain fries as a side and would have to order a full meal of Buffalo fries if I wanted them. I'd be willing to pay $1-1.50 extra to be able to get Fry Bar fries as a side with my meat. I ended up having pulled pork with a side of mac and cheese and potato salad. The pork was delicious. The potato salad was good. But the mac and cheese was nothing special. The sauces are also delicious, but we had to ask the server to explain what they all were to us. I would have appreciated a sign on the table or on the menu chalkboard with a brief description of each. Or a label on the bottles. And lastly, less styrofoam please! Everytime anyone at my table of 6 asked for a refill on their drink, a new styrofoam cup arrived. All of the sides were in little styrofoam cups, when there was no reason they couldn't have been just scooped into the same plastic basket the meat was in. I appreciate that styrofoam containers = less clean up for the restaurant. But something more "green" would be an improvement. All in all, I'd encourage MEAT to be more creative with their product. The menu is clever and a good start, but it ended there. I see they're closing for the next two days for some renovations. I'm eager to go again and see what they've done. Tried the brisket sandwich , mac & cheese, an order of parmesan garlic fries. -Sandwich wasn't any better than King of the Grill -Mac & cheese was mediocre -Fries were way overpriced and disappointing after reading the previous reviews.
