Two years ago or perhaps three during the heavy rains before Christmas the water started pouring to our living room. I called several roofers. all offered to put tarp on my roof for over $3k and then comeback after Christmas to asses the situation and give me another quote for the amount not to be yet determined. I was facing $3K plus whatever amount at the mercy of the roofer. In desperation I tried another number; it happened to be McKayRoofing. He arrived within an hour. Inspected the roof. determined that any potential damage would not get worse and promised to return immediately after Christmas if it does not rain. His crew fixed the roof within a few hours for a fraction of the cost quoted by other earlier. Perfect since. He advised to have annual inspections. He did them since for free. I discovered water damage on the ceiling of our bedroom last month and immediately freaked out. We had solar panels installed directly above that area 7 years ago and my biggest fear was that it would cause a roof leak. Everything was fine until the heavy rain we had this past winter. Another neighbor had recommended Mike for roof repair, so I contacted Mike to let him know my situation. Mike was very responsive and was able to come out to provide a free estimate. His prices are fair. He even spoke with the solar company to let them know what needs to be done so he can assess the cause of the leak and make the necessary repairs. Mike provided a detailed invoice and photos of the damage and repairs for me so I can submit it for reimbursement from my solar company since I was still under their roof penetration warranty. Mike and Oscar did a great job finding the cause of the leak, which ended up being a cracked tile around the bracket where the solar panels were installed. A friend of mine had referred me to Michael McKay, a Roofing Contractor in Corona, CA, because he had actually replaced her roof in Laguna Niguel several years ago; & my friend had very highly recommended Mike since she was very pleased with the quality of his roofing work. Mike drove all the way to my house in North Orange County to look @ my roof for me since I had received a recent letter from my Homeowner's Insurance Company advising me that my Homeowner's insurance policy would not be renewed due to some current problems with my roof. Excellent work by Mike on my roof repair. Very cost effective, less than the lowest cost the home inspector thought it would be. Very thorough, used new tiles, before and after work pics, pics showing the repair with estimate and estimate included insurance docs. Usually you have to ask for all this, Mike does it as part of the job. Very honest, my neighbor had his roof inspected and Mike recommended some minor cleaning, nothing else. We had McKay's Roofing fix a roof leak back in late August, 2020. Mike came out and provided his evaluation with the appropriate caveats. Those caveats were unnecessary since the repair was exactly what he thought it would be. They also examined the entire roof and fixed some other issues as part of their service. Fast forward to this month when we discovered that a row of tiles had become disattached and slid. Mike came out to have a look and then sent someone out that very afternoon to fix it (and also some other minor issues, I guess this is a habit :-). Last week proved to be the exception to the rule in this area and as a result my 23-year-old roof proved that it could spring not one but six leaks! Went to home advisor, filled out all the appropriate information and was matched with three different contracts. THANK GOODNESS MIKE WITH MCKAY'S ROOFING WAS ONE OF THE CONTRACTORS. This is what you NEED to know about their work. 1. Mike was fast in getting in touch with me and was able to give me an estimate on repairs the same day he contacted me. 2. He was able to get me on his schedule for the very next week. 3. He took before and after pictures and sent them to me so that I could see the work that had been done. 4. He was extremely honest about what needed to be done going forward so that these types of leaks were less likely to happen in the future. I have heard horror stories about roof leaks and the repairs that are done by less than reputable companies, McKay's Roofing demonstrated from start to finish exactly how this type of situation should be handled and how to make the customer feel like everything will be okay. Not good at leaving reviews, but quality of work and quick service definitely deserves a timely review. I have had work done by Mckay's Roofing on two separate occasions; which, one of them was just done recently. I was very impressive with the work done on my roof the first time as I had a leak on my valley and some additional work needed to be done. So far the leak is gone and the roof looks great. The work on the second leak on a completely different valley was done yesterday and it looks great but we will see how the second one comes out regarding any leaks but based on his first job and pretty sure that the job was done right. I read other reviews were people complain as to efficiency on McKay's scheduling, servicing them immediately, etc, etc, etc. But what people don't realize is that there are other people who need to be serviced first and the reality is that not everyone can be serviced while it is raining and just because you call doesn't mean that everyone needs to be forgotten. This review is on this company's ability to keep an appointment. Called on Friday 1-18-19 and his first availability was the following Monday morning. Got a call Monday morning telling me he had to cancel because he had to do an estimate for Farmers Insurance because they give him lots of business (totally understand). He started he would come by the next morning Tuesday 1-22-19 and I said I would take my second time off of work to be there. He called at 7:15 and I missed his call. I called back at 7:20 because I was in the restroom and he stated he was already too far to make his appointment?? 5 minutes later... really?? When you have an appointment that usually means you go to your appointment in my book? I'm sure he may do good work but good luck trying to get him to keep his appointment unless your an insurance company?? read more

Mike was referred to me from a person I've known several years. He returned my call within 24 hrs and I asked for a roof inspection and quote. Quickly he took my name & address and offered Monday between 11a-3p and finished with saying he would call one hour prior to getting there. Monday at noon he called saying he'd be there in 10 mins. What? I asked him to wait, I'll be there in 35-45mins, I want to be there. He said no & that I didn't need to be there. He wouldn't wait and I agreed for him to inspect & send quote. I was on another call when he called a few mins later, in his voice mail he said he didn't know if he had the right address & dogs were barking. I have no dogs & only one neighbor has in house dog. I don't get it, I was not happy! He seemed like an unfriendly person or angry both times we spoke, sorta in a rush feel too. I'll keep it brief but to the point. I'm a senior with a little experience around people and home repair companies. After some very heavy rain in our area a few of my neighbors experienced some leakage problems that required major repair. I had some very minor leakage, so when Brent McKay was next door, I asked him for an estimate. When he got a few minutes he looked at the area and determined it was just a missing cap to my bathroom fan exhaust pipe on the roof. Now this is what is so impressive. Without hesitation he said it looks like a 3" cap, go to Home Depot pick one up and I'll put it on for you. I did and he put it on. I offered him some type of payment and he refused. They came out to repair our roof, it was expensive. We then paid a lot of money to get the damaged drywall replaced and new carpet put in. To our dismay, when the next big rains came, the roof leaked in the exact same place! We called him back out, he got up on the roof and then said it was another problem, and would fix it for an additional $1000. Well, this rainy season, we are still dealing with the leak, when we went on the roof ourselves, we learned that not only did he not fix anything, there were tiles that were completely missing! He went back up there and did not tell us this. He just fixed the damage, but did not fix the actual problem. I can't say enough how horrible this person has to be as a contractor to take our money and not fix the problem. then try to charge us even more! read more

Avoid this guy like the plague!!!. He came over during rainy season and gave us a bid to fix 3 leaks that we had. That is the only good thing, that he was the only person we're able to get ahold of to come over that quickly. He sent his guys out the following week to do the repairs that he made the bid on. They did not finish but he didn't tell us that. I went up on the roof to check the work and saw that it wasn't finished and we had to call him back. So he sent his guys. To " finish" the work. I went back up on the roof to check the work and it looks like crap. They had cut giant holes around the vent pipe. They did not put the towels back on straight. They did not even cut the tiles correctly. I took pictures of all of this and sent it to him. He responded that it looked fine and that's the way it should look. I sent photos to other roofers and they said what the hell happened to your roof. We have a contractor working on another project at the house. He was not able to do the roof but he had been up there before and after the work. we ask him to speak to Mike, we were there for the phone conversation, mike was very short with him and did not want to hear what he had to say. As far as Mike is concerned he is the roofing God. Then it started to rain. He was supposed to fix three leaks. One leak was fixed. We now have three additional leaks and two of the three original still leak. One, leaks even worse. I took photos of the water leaking from the spots he was supposed to fix and sent them to him. He had the gall to say oh no, those leaks aren't from the work he did. Hello, it is the same spot you're supposed to fix that still have water running from them. then he said the additional leaks or not his fault either. Hello, it's rainy season we only had three leaks until your guys were on the roof cutting giant holes in our tile. How can the three new leaks not be your fault? four different times, I tried to schedule a time for him to come out. I even had a roofer available one time to go up there with them to show the roofing God how bad is work was. each time, he cancelled on me last minute. finally, this morning he comes over. I tell him about his guys were cutting giant holes in the tiles. He tries to tell me that those holes were already there, is Guy didn't cut any tiles. I told him, I was here when they were here, I saw them cut the tiles. I saw them cut the pieces they cut out and throw them on the lawn. I even had one in my hand it landed in the bushes and they did not throw away. So now, you're calling me a liar? no worries, because I have photos. I asked him again, are you sure no one cut tiles? He told me absolutely positively no one cut tiles. Only morons would do that. So I pulled up photos that I took shortly after his guys were on the roof. You can see the dust from the grinders on the tile still there. you can see fresh cut marks and all the tiles that I'm complaining about. So now he says oh well they cut those tiles but they didn't cut any of the other tiles. B*******. Then he said something else about the few new tiles they put in so I said, I would you know because you guys painted the tiles. He said, no way. My guys would not paint tile. So, I took him up on the roof and showed him the tile that was painted. Then he said Oh well they painted those tiles but they wouldn't have painted any other tiles. Hello, shut your mouth and listen. Don't say things only to be proven wrong. So Mike, what you're trying to tell me is, they would paint tiles on my roof but they wouldn't paint tiles on somebody else's roof? They wouldn't cut tiles on somebody else's roof but they cut the tiles on my roof? Seriously!! how am I supposed to believe anything you say. You were telling me that you fixed the leaks and there's no way that could be leaking yet I saw with my own eyes and videotaped and photographed the actual leaks and sent them to you. so the morning ended with Mike getting in his truck and storming away. So now I have a roof with additional leaks, hacked up tiles and I have to find someone else to come and fix them. Through this entire process, mike was rude, arrogant and would not listen to anything. Not just today but from the day he came to start fixing the roof. Maybe if he would shut up more and listen to his customers whose houses he is working on, not believe that he is incapable of making a mistake or this is Guy may not have done a good job, he might be able to do a better job. Save yourself the grief. Find another roofer to do the job. read more

McKay's is just wrapping up another job on our roof. We have been replacing older eaves and facia boards that have water and termite damage. Mike is a Pro. No nonsense, shoots straight and they do great work. This time around they also replaced a skylight with another that cranks open. I contacted Mike at McKay's Roofing for an estimate. His was one of three I received from contacts on Angie's List. After Mike climbed up and examined my roof, he provided me with his estimate with the knowledge that he needed to uncover a good portion of the area of the concrete tile roof to determine the issue. His guys started a few days later and only took about three days to resolve everything. His team did an outstanding job at Mike's direction. His estimate was fair, and the final price was almost dead-on. I chose McKay Roofing primarily because Mike took the time to explain his approach to resolving the issue. He also showed me why the roof needs an annual "tune-up" as he removed concrete tiles from several areas of my roof and picked up handfuls of dirt and debris that had collected and was lifting tiles. I found them on another site during the rain of 1/5/16 as I noticed a leak in my roof. Mike contacted me, and I told him the problem. He came out in an hour of my calling(he was sick) went up on the roof, told me I had some broken tiles but he was able to do a temporary repair. He gave me an estimate for the entire roof side and also for just fixing the section that was leaking. The work took a full week to complete and involved removing cement tiles, replacing the underlayment and flashing, and resetting the original tiles. Called them on a referral. Mike McKay gave me quite a sales pitch which included having to pay for specially milled ship lap and set up fees for that milling. I was raised by a contractor and know I have 1 x 8 ship lap eaves (available at Home Depot). He kept on adding in other fees. I felt as if he were talking down to me. His roof bid was in the ballpark of others, but I didn't hire him because I knew the add-ons would be too expensive. My first mistake upon meeting him was to tell him I was recently widowed. I may have gray hair, be a senior, and a woman, but I am an active senior with a master's degree in education. I still substitute teach since retiring. I am wise, experienced, and aware. Just because I am a widowed, and a senior woman, is no reason to try to take advantage.
