I recently had Scott and team refresh the suspension on my car. My car is over 25 years old and between time, mileage, and the Arizona heat the ride quality was meaningfully diminished as compared to new. They installed a new KW coil over system, control arms, sway bars, shock mounts, drop links, bushings and bearings... as well as corner balancing and lowering the ride height. If you want sophisticated, excellent, reasonably priced service on a Porsche,.........get an appointment with Scott. After a number of years of owning air-cooled Porsches I decided on getting either a 986, 987 or 996. In my search for the car I spoke to my old shop that did the service on my air-cooled cars and just never felt comfortable about their knowledge of the water cooled cars. After purchasing the car I wanted to get a few items addressed on the car. I found McIlvain motors and gave them a call. I spoke with Scott and immediately felt comfortable about his knowledge and decided that this was the place to my Porsche taken care. After having McIlvain Motors complete a number of service items and most recently help install the hardtop I can only say good things. Don't say I didn't warn you. DO NOT RECOMMEND AT ALL! So after taking my car to the dealership diagnosing the problem I decided I would support a small business instead of going with my normal dealership service. Boy was I wrong. I decided to go with this shop to have some repairs done and and oil change. The shop was communicative so that was okay. My service was complete and it was time to pick up my car. I paid my $3600 for repairs and got in my car and headed home. Something was not right. My luxury car now sounded like a diesel truck! It was so loud and rough sounding, nothing like I left it. I called the shop and told them about the never before loudness of my car and let them know I wanted to bring it back because something was not right. So I drop my car back off couple days later and they look over my car and say they can't hear anything abnormal. It's very obviously loud and something is clearly wrong. So I tell them I will come in and show the mechanic what I'm talking about and they agree I should come in and explain. I get in the car with the mechanic and show him exactly what's going on and he says oh yes this usually happens with these cars around this mileage it's the motor mounts! I tell him this is absolutely not how I left my car this was never an issue till after this shop worked on it. He seemed not to care and said they have sent me a quote on what it would cost to fix it he then says is there anything else I can help you with I say no. He gets out of the car and goes into the shop. I sit in my car in shock about what just happened. This was my worst nightmare trusting a small business with my car only for my car to come out with more issues than it went in with. It's bad business and I wouldn't trust them at all who knows what they've done to my car, that I now have to go fix. read more

I have not used McIlvain Motors yet but did send an email to inquire about an alignment for my Porsche Cayman. Scott McIlvain responded very promptly and let me know that his shop doesn't do alignments except for track cars but he provided the name and contact information for the shop that he sends cars to and the shop that does the alignment on his personal cars. I called the shop he recommended, Network Alignment, and scheduled my car for service. The service was great and reasonably priced. I usually leave reviews up to my wife but I wanted to write one for McIlvain Motors. Scott is great to deal with because he knows Porsches and is honest to deal with. My wife's '09 911S Cab was emitting some type of vapor from under the car near the front, left tire. I couldn't figure out what she did to it NOW so I arranged to take it to Scott, who's been maintaining the car for a couple of years. The moment we drove up and explained what she saw (the vapor had dissipated by then) I didn't even have to finish the explanation as he knew exactly what it the problem was. Sure enough, when all was said and done, a small rock caused a hole that damaged the filter for the a/c. I was given an estimate and when the repair was finished was pleasantly surprised the price came in under estimate! I get anxious when faced with car repairs, especially her car as Porsche repairs can be complicated and costly but because of Scott I know we, and the car, are in excellent hands at McIlvain Motors. After moving to Phoenix, I was on the lookout for a independent mechanic who was knowledgable about Porsches. Scott came highly recommended from local Porsche Club of America members, so I called him when I needed some basic maintenance on my 2000 Boxster. Scott himself answered the phone and was happy to chat with me about the car and take it in for an oil change an an inspection. I dropped the car off on a weekend morning, went about some errands, and returned a few hours later to pick it up. He walked me around the vehicle while the car was still on the lift and pointed out the various components that I should be paying attention to, especially those that are known to cause problems and normal wear items like brake rotors and tires. It was helpful to see everything pointed out in person and honestly it was just a treat to see the mechanics of the vehicle. I think any car enthusiast would appreciate the ability to see the components from the mechanic's point of view. And this guy obviously eats, breaths, and lives Porsches. I was charged a very reasonable price for the oil change, inspection, and fluids and left very impressed with Scott and his shop. After a little more time with the car, I decided to upgrade the base suspension to the Porsche M030 ROW suspension and again gave Scott a call. He provided me some information on the virtues of the optional Porsche suspension vs. popular coilovers used by many track cars and gave me a quote on the labor ($80/hr btw... hard to beat that!). I decided that the ROW would be right for my street car, and Scott agreed to let me purchase the parts and have them shipped directly to his shop. After the parts delivered, he coordinated with me to pick up my car and even went out of his way to allow me to freshen up the brakes while the car was already up on his lift. Again, before the car was back on the ground, he pointed out the new components and the basics of the installation and also alerted me to watch out for a potential leak in the car's water pump (a known issue). With the wheels bolted up, he took the car out for a test ride to make sure that there was no unexpected behavior or clunks out of the suspension and then recommended a shop for the alignment that I will need. I've rarely left an auto mechanic feeling so confident that the work that was done to my car was: (1) desired/necessary, (2) top quality, and (3) value priced. Every part of my experience with McIlvain Motors was simply top notch... If you care about your Porsche and don't want to hassle with the dealership for your auto work, give Scott a call and see what he can do for you and your ride. I'm very glad that I did.
