If I had read these reviews before I bought my car, I would have never gone to McGrath Honda in Elgin. The only reason I came out of the experience unscathed is because I was hell bent on not getting screwed. Looking back, I should have just walked out on principle. I am normally a very considerate, kind, and empathetic person, but this place brought out my don't-f-with-me side.
It started with a new sales guy. We test drove the CRV, and having had two CRVs before, I knew what I was getting. My previous CRV was no longer drivable and I sold it to a mechanic who was going to fix it up in his spare time. In the meantime, I was renting a car to get to work - which was not cheap. I needed a car and the advertised sticker price was good.
I began negotiations with the sales guy and things went in the typical annoying way of used car sales. But it was reasonable. Until the top sales manager came into the picture.
The sales manager came in acting like he was pissed off that the younger guy had made me a reasonable deal, when of course, the sales guy had gotten approval from the floor manager at each stage of our negotiations. Our deal was to come down from the sticker price and replace the worn tires. It was a fair deal for both parties. I certainly wasn't getting a steal, but I wasn't getting screwed. The fact that I wasn't getting screwed didn't seem to suit the sales manager.
He came to me and my husband to present a worse deal. I said, "I already made a deal with your own sales person and you want to come back with something worse?" At that point, I was ready to walk. He said, " He's new, he doesn't know what he's doing." I told him that he shouldn't have sales people making deals if he wasn't going to honor them. If we didn't proceed with the existing deal, it was time for us to leave.
He finally conceded as I was getting my coat on. I wanted to be sure the new tires in this deal weren't going to be the lowest grade possible, or pre-driven used tires, so I repeated several times, "And you're going to put all new, high grade tires on?" His first response was, "All four tires will match." What an a**. Until I heard the word "new" come out of his mouth, I didn't shake on the deal.
After we shook on the deal, my husband had to take our son home. I sat around for at least an hour after that. Finally, in my third hour there, I was brought to the finance department. That's when they really revealed just how slimy they are.
I sit down and notice there are cameras, and quickly realize this isn't finance - it's sales on steroids. Or crack. Take your pick. This is the first time I'd ever dealt with a commission-based used car dealer (previously bought from individuals and CarMax). But it wasn't the first time I ever had to deal with a-holes.
Apparently, the guy was supposed to be cool or something, and tried to use peer pressure. Come on. Like I give a rat's a** what they think socially. He tried over and over and over again to try and sell me the extended warranty. I finally told him, "I am not going to spend one more dime than what I have committed to spending. It's not going to happen." So fine, I thought I was done. But no - the worst was right around the corner.
He printed out a copy of my sales contract. And guess what. It had the sticker price on it. By that point, it was 11pm, I was tired, but I was so outraged that they tried to trick me, I said, "Absolutely not. This is absolutely not the right price. Why would I buy a used car at the sticker price? Who does that? You can fix the price or we're done." I honestly should have left then. But I was determined not to let them wear me down. I could leave with a good car and a good deal as long as I caught them at their game. He scrambled and went back to the sales manager, and returned to change the contract. So we were on our second contract.
By now, I was not going to let a single thing get by. I didn't care if I was going to be there until 3:00 in the morning, I was going to get out of this okay. While I was reading this second version VERY carefully, the finance guy goes, "Who reads anymore?" I responded: "I do."
And then there it was - another "mistake." I told the sales guys and the finance guy a total of four times that I did NOT need plates. Surprise, surprise - there they were in the second contract.
On to the third contract, and they made another "mistake" with the IOU for the new tires.
I finally signed the fourth contract and left in the CRV at midnight.
I've gone back for the tires they owed me, and haven't been back since. I'd rather pay twice as much somewhere else just to never go back to McGrath Honda in Elgin ever again.
Unless you're willing to risk beating them at their relentless game, save yourself the absurdity and go somewhere else - anywhere else. What a bunch of jerks. read more
