My car without its engine cover the day I got it back

Back in January, during the big snowstorm, I got stuck in front of my house for three days. After finally getting unstuck, I was on my way to work, and as I turned onto Blairs Ferry from the highway ramp, my car died. A police officer came up behind me and insisted that I move my car off the overpass because it was a busy intersection. I panicked and didn't know what to do, so I had the car towed to McGrath for inspection. Unfortunately, my car sat at McGrath for a week and a half before they even looked at it. They didn't communicate with me at all--I had to call multiple times just to get any updates. Eventually, they quoted me $1,700 for an oil change, a battery installation, a coolant line replacement, and a coolant flush. When I finally got my car back after another week, the engine cover was missing, and when I checked the oil, it was dirty, so they hadn't even changed it. My car worked for about two weeks, but then it completely broke down--it wouldn't start or do anything. Two friends, one of whom is a certified mechanic, helped me replace the starter and the fuel pump. At no point did anyone mention that I would need a brand new motor. After a few more weeks of my car not working, my landlord had it towed back to McGrath. It sat there for another week or two before they even looked at it again, and once again, they failed to communicate with me. I had to call them, and I was initially quoted around $1,400 for repairs. Then, the guy on the phone corrected himself and said it would actually cost $14,000. I've only had this car for about a year, and I bought it from Craftworks with no issues. The car had only 135,000 miles on it and was in great condition. Now, it's sitting in my garage, and I still owe $11,000 on it. I do Uber Eats and Uber for work, but I haven't been able to work since January because of this, which means I can't afford a new car. I haven't been able to visit my family since Thanksgiving, and my parents are not doing well. I'm feeling stuck and unsure of what to do because I'm being quoted $14,000 for a repair, but I haven't even been clearly told what's wrong with the car. I suspect something happened to it while it was at McGrath, and I feel like I'm losing everything.

EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED -- GET A SECOND OPINION BEFORE TRUSTING THIS SERVICE DEPARTMENT…read moreWe purchased our 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD diesel from McGrath on August 22, 2022. It was a certified vehicle, and we had a trade-in. Like many people who make a major vehicle purchase, we later questioned whether we had paid more than we should have. But we accepted our decision and continued doing business with McGrath, including having them perform routine maintenance and oil changes. Unfortunately, our recent experience has completely changed our opinion of this dealership. We recently developed a problem with our truck. My husband is a mechanic himself, but because today's diesel systems are considerably more complicated than they once were, he felt it was best to have a qualified diesel technician diagnose the problem. We took the truck to McGrath and were told they would put it on their computer and determine what was wrong. After keeping the truck for a couple of days, McGrath told us the problem was an injector and connector and estimated the repair at approximately $4,000. We were shocked. Rather than authorize a $4,000 repair, we decided to investigate further and get a second opinion. We picked up our truck from McGrath and were charged nearly $400 for the diagnostic work. Here's where this experience became particularly disturbing. We took the truck to another certified diesel mechanic and explained McGrath's diagnosis. After examining the truck, he told us he did not believe the injector or connector was the problem and suspected the wiring harness. We left the truck with him this week. He was right. The problem was the wiring harness, not the injector and connector. The truck was repaired for approximately $500, and it is now running perfectly. So let's look at the numbers: McGrath's diagnosis: Injector + connector McGrath's estimate: Approximately $4,000 McGrath's diagnostic charge: Nearly $400 Actual problem: Wiring harness Actual repair cost: Approximately $500 Result: Truck running perfectly That's not a small difference. That's a $3,500+ difference in the proposed repair, based on a diagnosis that turned out to be wrong. We understand that diagnosing mechanical problems isn't always an exact science and that technicians can occasionally be wrong. What we cannot accept is being presented with a nearly $4,000 repair based on an incorrect diagnosis, and then being charged nearly $400 for that diagnosis. After years of doing business with McGrath, this experience has completely destroyed our confidence in their service department. We went there expecting professional, honest, competent service. Instead, we left feeling like we needed to protect ourselves by getting a second opinion and, thankfully, we did. Had we simply trusted the diagnosis and authorized the repair, we could have spent thousands of dollars repairing something that wasn't even the problem. That is unacceptable to us. We will not be taking our truck back to McGrath for service. And based on what happened to us, we strongly encourage anyone facing an expensive repair estimate to get a second opinion before authorizing the work. We aren't writing this because we are unhappy about spending money on our truck. We understand vehicles require maintenance and repairs. We're writing this because we paid nearly $400 for a diagnosis that was wrong, were given an approximately $4,000 repair estimate based on that diagnosis, and another qualified diesel mechanic found and repaired the actual problem for about $500. After this experience, McGrath has lost our business and our trust.

BEWARE OF BUYING USED VEHICLES FROM RANDY KUEHL HONDA IN CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA…read more I bought a 2020 Dodge Grand Caravan from them on March 12, 2026 for over $13,000. The dealership-provided CarFax claimed the engine had been serviced and the vehicle a "must-see, must-drive, must-own". Less than ONE MONTH later -- after driving only 367 miles -- the van broke down and would not start. In the next two weeks, I took it to two separate mechanics, and they told me the engine needs replaced or rebuilt (around $10,000 in repairs) due to major internal engine damage that would have existed before the sale. When I contacted Randy Kuehl Honda about the issue, they offered me $1,000 toward repairs. That does not come close to covering the estimated repair costs, nor the loss in value on a vehicle I had just purchased for over $13,000 less than a month earlier. I understand used vehicles are sold as-is, but having catastrophic engine failure less than a month after purchase and after only 367 miles -- combined with documentation claiming the engine had just been serviced -- has been an extremely disappointing experience. My vehicle is no longer worth the over $13,000 that I just paid for it, but a diminished value of about $3,000 to $4,000 due to having to have a complete new motor costing over $10,000 with motor and labor. Please share so others are warned before buying from them.

On the website you can enter a price as an offer. I entered the price of $19,000. This was a little low but I was hoping we could negotiate. A coworker recommended this place to me. I visited the dealership and was late due to the construction (they didn't tell me!). I was given a salesperson who did not know anything about a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited! What's the horsepower? "Um, don't know, I'll have to ask" Is there hill descent control? Is there hill start assist? What is the engine? What are the tires? "Um, I'll have to get back with you about that". The guy was nice and there was no pressure. But really, he couldn't answer any of my questions. I told him about my price offer and that I had done research and thought it was pretty reasonable since the car is not new but used and there are better offers in in the area. He asked me if there were any other cars I was interested in. I said a Subaru Forester. He said he would go look and see if they had any on their other lots. He disappeared for some time and then returned with the manager. The manager told me there was no way I could get a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited anywhere around here for $19k. He said he looked at all of McGrath's lots and there was just no way. He showed me some computer paper which had a price of $25k which he said was the price they bought the car. Are you kidding me! What a bunch of malarkey! He said he would go down $500 but no more. Well, I thanked him for his time and walked out the store. I never did get the info on the Subaru or any of my Wrangler questions answered. It's probably for the best since I doubt the salesperson I was with knew anything about a Subaru either. They should have just told me they couldn't meet my price instead of wasting my time. The whole time I was waiting for the salesperson to find out about the Subaru, they were in the researching if there were any Jeep Unlimiteds for $19k? Really?! Why didn't they just come out and tell me straight up they couldn't meet my price but they could help me find another car? Instead they made me look like I was a liar! I guess it's okay for the salesperson to lie but if a customer is lying, then the management will spend 30 minutes doing research to find out if the customer is lying. Iowa is not a good place to buy a Jeep since they are overpriced here due to their popularity. Chicago is the best place to go to find a fair price. It's not as popular since most urbanites want a fuel efficient car. This experience left me really bad impressions of McGraths and Jeep. Only go here if you want a car that is overpriced and you are not willing (too lazy) to go to Chicago for a fair price.

My experience with D.J.'s couldn't have been more professional and pleasant. We bought an older vehicle with very high miles (over 300k.) The price we negotiated was more than fair. They let me drive the vehicle several times. I looked it over top to bottom and went for it. The battery was shot so they replaced that along with all the clamps for free after we negotiated the price. They had me sign the "as-is" document. Mark explained the meaning to me, that there would be no returns and no "Lemon Law" benefits. I had my eyes wide open. I've been driving the beast as a daily driver for going on 5 months now and am exceedingly happy. The vehicle has ended up (so far, knock on wood) with only one pretty significant "wart" that I'm working on fixing (that they couldn't likely have even known existed). I'll be able to fix it (to the tune of about 25% of my purchase price) and still be way ahead of the book value on this vehicle. I am a very satisfied customer and wouldn't have a problem referring friends. It's a used car lot. They sell used cars.

She was very personable and knowledgeable and soon we decided it would be the Murano although the Rogue was so much better than the year I had a Rogue so I was very impressed with the changes Nissan made on the Rogue. Mercedes made herself available to us and answered any/all questions we had. I'm not sure we got the best deal on trade-in but saved us from selling it ourselves. Because everything is electronic and cameras everywhere, I'm impressed that Mercedes knew how to work everything on the display panel. I'm still learning myself. I would recommend highly using either Zac S or Mercedes to help you choose a new vehicle. No one was a hard sell, even finance. They just wanted us to get what we wanted. Again, this is our fifth vehicle from Dave Wright and predecessor so we've had a good run with Dave Wright.
