They are all my extended 'Ohana and have been treating me the same for years already. They work by the books and are legit great at what they do! If you're ever driven past there and wondered why the lot is always so full, it's really because they are that darn good. If you haven't given them a try yet, anything simple from a safety check to changing your oil/battery/tires, if they don't have the parts they order them for you and keep you updated with timeframe and projected costs, they can do anything! The uncle that works here is so cool and amazing! Coming from Kaua'i, I usually had my dad take care of the car stuff but now that I'm on O'ahu I had to figure out my "where to take my car for _____" spots myself! And luckily, I found McCully Union Service for safety checks! It's super simple and easy and all you have to do is come at a right time (depending on how much time you have). I say that because if you're in a rush you might want to come when it's not so busy, but if you've got time to wait then come whenever! I remember coming a bit close to their closing time and uncle got me done right away. It's like a drive-thru since you just drive up, stay in the car, he comes to you and he works his magic. He's also very funny and makes the short interaction very meaningful in his own way. I've come for my own car and with my friends' cars before and it's the same, friendly and wonderful service each time! I'm nearing the end of my last safety check with him so I'll definitely be coming back soon! I've been coming here for many years to do my safety checks on my two vehicles. They use to do safety checks at the original 76 gas station on S. King Street (next door to the McCully McDonalds), but I heard the owner recently passed away last year, so now they only do the safety checks at the other location on Beretania Street (just next door to Made In Hawaii Foods). I like coming here to get my safety check, as the workers are pretty efficient in checking your vehicle. If you come at the right time...........there is virtually no lines, but of course if you come at the wrong time..........there can be a wait. Cost to do your safety check with tint is $25.33, if you have a car without tint, I think it's like $20 + some change. If you notice the service station, there are two entrance/exits. As you drive on Beretania Street, enter the 1st entrance of the service station & pull up to the island. This is where they will do your safety check. If there are cars already in line, just pull up behind the car in front of you & wait your turn. When they complete your safety check, and you pay your bill, you exit the service station at the 2nd entrance/exit. Why am I telling you this? Well, I've seen customers enter the wrong entrance (from the 2nd entrance/exit), only for the clerk to tell you that you need to exit the service station, then drive around Beretania Street again to re-enter the service station from the 1st entrance. What's all the hassle about doing this? Well, since this service station is busy...........a lot of times there are customers already waiting patiently in line in their cars from the 1st entrance/exit, and if you enter though the 2nd entrance/exit, you will be cutting in line, and I guess the clerk wants to make sure all customers are treated equally, & fairly. Make sense? The people here are friendly, & provide great service! When I went here this morning to get my safety check, the same clerk that helped me last year actually remembered me. I went in for a safety inspection. There was a little confusion on my part on which lane to go in, but it worked out fine. The guy who did my inspection, Casper, was efficient and courteous. He always treated me as a person, apologizing for any wait (it was pretty quick) and thanking me. After the inspection, my fate hit me and my battery died before I could ever leave! They took it in stride and jumped my car and set me up with a new one (after it was delivered). The guy who helped me with that, Keli'i was also thoughtful and efficient and did a thorough job. He explained what some of the issues may have been and I noticed he interacted with other customers in a similar thoughtful way. I was very impressed by the business. While I was at the Island Club this morning, some very thoughtful person left a note on my car saying my safety check was expired. I couldn't believe it because as part of my current job I actually check about 20 applicant's cars every week for their registration, safety check, and other things. My safety check was over four months expired. I headed to my usual place, McCully Union Service, and the friendly staff conducted a fast and efficient safety check in about 10 minutes. They were were very amused by the note that someone left on my car. Their parking is very congested and they are a little hard to find but they are strongly recommended for their superior service. Took my car for a safety check and it was super fast! The process itself took 5-10 mins and the only thing that we had to wait for was them servicing the other cars there (which wasn't long at all). Total came out to ~$26, which is cheaper than the previous shop I went to! First come, first serve - no appointments. I also inquired about their other services and Charles was super kind about explaining prices and the processes, even though they were busy running around. If you were looking to get your state inspection done quickly and with probably the friendliest service around check this place out. I have had to visit this location twice already and unfortunately I'm still not done with my inspection. However I am going to go out of my way to make it back to this place simply because they seem to really care about their customers. The gentleman that was assisting us when we came initially was super friendly and literally got us in and out. He also did a great job of explaining how important it is to make sure that you have two plates on your car. I drive a BMW and I do not want holes drilled in the front of my car. However he explained to me there's a bracket that hooks into the car and is able to carry a front license plate for BMW vehicles. We went back the second time they did everything in their power to try and help us but they couldn't because they could not mount the second plate. It's a law here that you have to take pictures once you inspected vehicle so I will probably be back sometime next week. read more

I went to McCully Union Service to get my safety check after reading the great reviews on Yelp. Sure enough, I found the 5-star ratings were totally legit! The staff was super nice, very welcoming and completely professional. When I got there, there were several cars in the queue before me, so I expected a bit of a wait. But I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly they were able to thoroughly inspect each vehicle and complete the safety check process. They are very organized, efficient and the best thing is, you don't need an appointment, just drive up to their location, get in the queue and the staff will guide you through the process. First time coming to Mccully Union to do my safety check. I needed to get it done ASAP because my safety was expired and I'm a last minute kinda person. I called to see if they even did safety checks and the male who answered said it's first come first serve and to just come in. Luckily I live right down the road so I came in around 11:30am and there was no line I was the 2nd in line and I only waited 5 mins. A worker name Gina came out and she was so nice, her customer service was on point. She was super thorough with the whole inspection but unfortunately I didn't pass because some of my bulbs was out but Gina gave me a option to fix it myself and come back or she can fix it for me. I decided to get it fix there because I was already there and wanted to get my safety done. She was so quick on doing it and the price was super reasonable. I was expecting it to be a arm and a leg because a lot of places will charge you for labor or whatever they can find to charge you but over there I was only charged for my safety which was $25.00 and the light bulbs which was $10.00. I was so grateful for her, she even showed me how to change it out. Lucky for me because next time I'll be able to save and do it myself ! Thank you so much gina you was awesome. New forever Go-To place for a safety check!! No appt needed, just drive up. Like one of the reviewers said, these guys have their business setup for safety checks. They also do regular car repairs but i was just there for a safety. I went around 10am on a Tuesday, had 2 cars in front of me doing safety's and I was out that place by 10:15-10:20. Didn't even have to get out my car and have an inspector hop in and do all that extra stuff like most safety check inspections. The lady who was doing the safety's was super nice and efficient, she even put on my new sticker for me!! I didn't see her do that for the cars in front of me lol but defiantly recommend. What a fantastic first impression and service! I came for a vehicle inspection at 7:20 AM on a Saturday. I was third in line, so I waited about 20 minutes (I'd say it takes about 10 mins per customer). In a matter of 30 minutes, I was on my way home! Beyond being quick, the inspection is made simple and convenient for the customer - you sit in the car and turn on your lights, signals, wipers, etc. at the command of the employee. You only step out briefly so the employee can take a look at the interior of the car and later lift it with jacks. At the end, the employee takes your credit card to process your payment inside and brings it back to you. It doesn't get more hassle-free than that! My total was a very reasonable sum of $26.18. I have to add that the employeee went above and beyond to make sure I was aware of what steps I needed to take in order to register my car since it had come from the Mainland. I wish I'd asked his name - I think I heard someone call him Joe? Anyhow, I'm confident all the employees are equally friendly, helpful, informative, and speedy! Two words...safety check!! These guys are so fast and kind! I used to waste time going to get my car checked at a spot in Manoa where the people were always rude and mean! Not only that but they would also take at least an hour to get the check done (even coming at 7 am right when they start). Came here on a Saturday after doing a quick yelp check and saw all the positive reviews. Pulled into the little line (entrance is on s. beretania street), you literally do not have to get out of your car to do anything it couldn't be easier. I waited maybe 30 minutes because there were four cars ahead. You just wait in the line and when its your turn you pull into the covered area and give your paperwork. Tbh I failed the first time because I needed new tires but they guy was so cool he gave me a temporary sticker in case any cops pull me over! Once I got my new tires I came on a Tuesday morning right when they open and got my approval sticker! If there is no one in front of you you can be out in less than 15 minutes, these guys know what they're doing!!! Definitely found my new safety check spot, thank you!!!!! read more

I can't say enough about this place ( but I promise to keep this short). My boyfriend had gotten his safety check done here a week before and told me it was easy and fast. I needed fast because of my work schedule. When I pulled up there were two cars ahead of me. All three of us were greeted right away. For safety checks, it's a drive through service of sorts. You remain in your car while they perform the safety check. Believe me when I say that they don't cut corners, though. They check everything, and they were so friendly! Carlin! is the man! *This review is just based on the safety check service from Mccully Union Service. I've always done my safety checks at 76, various other places before but I was tired of the inconsistencies of their service during checks and often time it was not worth the time waiting to get my car seen just for a safety check! Even with an appointment for some places. I found this place when I was scrolling around yelp to find places that could do a safety check for me without an appointment as my safety was overdue for almost a month. First came here back in 2018 and met Carlin who helped me do my safety check, literally just came up to the safety check area and got started with the process by giving him the required docs and did his check-up. I didn't pass but Carlin was such a personable, friendly/nice and patient guy he went above and beyond and pointed out what I need to do to get passed and the cheapest way to get it resolved. Told him I got pulled over and given a warning for not getting my safety check renewed but since I just needed to get minor things changed/replaced he allowed me to just pay for the fee and gave me a temporary/conditional pass just in case I get pulled over for expired safety check. Once I got the things I needed to fix done, Carlin set me up and got things rolling. This year 2019 was no different, this time it literally took less than 10min and passed without issues also to my surprise. Carlin remembered/recognized me from a year later which was pretty cool. Safety check came out to $26.17 with tax and all I can say is will definitely come back year after year for a safety check here. I love McCully Union Service - they're my "go-to" car place for everything I need (safety checks, regular maintenance like turn signals, major work like radiator / power steering - you name it (I have an old / very demanding car!)). Charles is always super-responsive - even on holidays (like - the Sunday after New Year's Day!) and is always johnny-on-the-spot for answers and scheduling. They're super-busy due to staff year-end vacations and first-of-the-week (month/year) backlog so couldn't take my car right away, but I trust / like them enough that I'm more than willing to wait until they can take me. Just wanted to send out a shout out to the worker doing safety checks yesterday! He was efficient, professional, courteous and friendly! Great worker! Too bad I didn't get his name. Of course I was last minute and searching for a place to get a safety check before the end of the month. It was difficult to find a place that didnt require an appointment. Thankfully a worker from another place that didn't do safety checks recommended this one. I had tried 3-4 places with no success. There was a line of cars onto the street when I arrived. Watching the worker, I could see he was working very hard, talked to everyone very politely and doing his best to get everyone through as fast as possible. There were double lines and at times, he would do both cars at the same time (right blinker, left blinker, honk horn, etc.). He was very thorough. After he was done, he thanked people and said see you next year! Thank you for job well done! My husband takes his car here for service, but I've never been. Glad I was able to get what I needed done and in a way that I didn't mind too much waiting in line. read more

I got here early in the morning to get my car's safety check done about 8am and the lines were out the gate. I realized I left some paperwork at home which was about 5 minutes away so I left and came back about 15 minutes later. When I came back I was the next car in line. Waiting to about 19 minutes for the car next to me to finish and was met by one of the nicest service guys. I wish I remembered his name but I'd have to say compared to all the other places he was thorough and fast. Checked the entire car in about 10'minutes and I even asked if the could add air into my tires. But I'd have to say, after all the years of getting my safety check done at all the other spots around the island that had me wait for an hour or two I'm glad I finally found this place. I agree with the five start reviews! You wouldn't guess it by looking at it, but this place is a gem! I first found them a few weeks ago when jiffy lube was literally unable to schedule my safety appointments sooner than three weeks out. Carlin at McCully Union service not only got me in the same day but also fit me in AGAIN later in the day to finish my safety inspection (because I was one day expired - I had to jet over to the satellite city hall to pay registration first). The inspection was fast and straight forward and I got to actually sit in the car during the entire inspection! Fast forward three weeks, my AC suddenly gives out. Because of the excellent customer service from my safety check, I went straight to McCully Union to see if they could help. They told me to show up first thing in the morning the next day. Charles the mechanic was super nice, and he took notes as I was telling him everything I'd noticed with the AC and my engine stalling. Two hours later I got a video text from Charles showing me exactly what was wrong with my car. The estimate to fix it seemed surprisingly reasonable. Because he's such a thorough mechanic he mentioned a few other things that I would want to have fixed or tested in the future but there was absolutely no pressure from him for me to agreed to fix them right away because according to him they weren't immediate safety issues. I remember vividly in so many past experiences at OTHER SHOPS where I felt scared, guilted - sometimes at other shops I felt like my car was being held up for ransom until I agreed to fix the components....traumatizing.
