Couldn't ask for a better neighborhood bakery. Tremendous baked goods and the best coffee in Carroll Gardens by a long shot. The prices are extremely reasonably, the staff is courteous and friendly and the quality of their products is off the charts. This is a go-to stop every morning on the way to work for coffee and occasionally a delicious sweet treat to get the motor going. You can stock up on bread, bagels, pastries etc. if you have guests coming over. The place is perfect and nothing should change about it. I hope this post overshadows the 1 star review on 4/4/20 from the sad customer who felt that the staff wasn't welcoming enough to her.... hello there is a pandemic going on in case you didn't notice!! Friendliest service of the bakeries around. Good chai lattes, though not quite as spicy as I like them. Still solid for the 10 minutes it makes me forget it's 14 degrees outside. Hate to say it, but their signature lard bread is declining in quality. It's missing something--not quite as airy, lacking provolone, maybe over-peppered. Plus, they cut the size of the loaf by 25% and raised the prices. I usually go in the mornings. The staff at that time is attentive and friendly. And the Italian bread and soft cookie cakes are pretty good. But unfortunately with the holiday around the corner the staff this afternoon was not able to uphold that standard with which I've become accustomed to having there and I left without bread or cake. I literally was the only person in the store this afternoon and not one of the six people working offered to help. Not even a "we'll be with you in a minute". Nothing. I was meeting a friend for ice cream but since I got to the neighborhood early, I decided to walk around for a bit. As I was walking, I smelled something really buttery like something just came out of the oven. The area was mostly residential so my first thought was there must be a really good home baker living around here. But when I turned around, I saw there's this corner bakery called Mazzola. I saw a handful of people sitting outside by the bench seating and my gut instinct told me I need to check this place out. Overall, it's a very small but quaint bakery. There's no seating inside but there are couple of benches in front of the store. For a small bakery, they do have a lot of variety of breads and pastries to choose from. I didn't know what to order but I know I was craving for an almond croissant and decided to give it a shot. I ended up getting the last one for the day (woohoo!) and yes it was good, but not the best I've had. After I paid, I saw a sign on their window that said "Try our famous Lard Bread." My jaw dropped and felt I gypped myself for not seeing that in the first place. So if you wonder where that buttery smell is coming from, it's from the Lard bread and you should get it! We'd driven by Mazzola six weeks ago and it looked cute from the outside - so after checking Yelp reviews when we got home, we vowed to go there the next time we were in the neighborhood. We went there yesterday, and the person in front of us in line highly recommended the chocolate croissants. They'd just put out some freshly-made ones, so we each got one and we also bought a loaf of whole-grain bread. In addition, we couldn't resist the tempting-sounding names for two of their coffee beans - Jamaican Rum and Caramel Nut Fudge - so we bought a pound of each. We devoured the croissants yesterday (sinfully rich) and today we ate the bread & tried the Jamaican Rum coffee. The coffee was really good (like drinking liquid candy) and we look forward to trying the Caramel. The bread was good (it was much better warmed-up than not), but certainly not the best we've ever eaten. (Update on 2/5/11): The Caramel Nut Fudge coffee is *delicious*! read more

I just copped two lard bread loaves and let me tell you, IT WAS F-ING AMAZING. I personally love carbs with a passion. But with the addition of cured meat, it was over for me. The lady over the counter said I'm gonna love it and one of the customers told me she even got three loaves I can see why now. The people are sweet here, and so are the sweets. This is my first time here, and I'm so glad I stopped in on this sunny Sunday afternoon. When I happened to be a little short, the counter person let me slide with a smile. I love that. Who does that anymore?! I had a little cheese croissant which really was so fresh and amazing. You have to love any place that makes the air smell like heaven within a two block radius. The scent of fresh baked bread is absolutely fantastic. I'd been living in the neighborhood for a while and while I loved the amazing smells from the bakery, I never went in for some reason. Until I read on a food blog about Lard Bread. What! Had to try this. And wouldn't you know it, the best place to go is that same bakery I've been walking past all this time! And what an amazing thing Lard Bread is. This wonderfully crusty, chewy, soft, oily deliciousness made with lard, salami, and black pepper. I think there might even be a little cheese baked on top. Wrap it in foil and throw that in the oven for a few minutes to warm up, and I am swooning. Pair half a loaf with some soup, and it's a meal. Since discovering this, I have been back many times just to pick up a baguette with my bi-weekly grocery run. After having fresh baked loaves, I'll never go back to sliced bread! Tip: wrap any unused loaf tightly in foil, otherwise you'll have a bread-shaped club the next day. Effective as a weapon, not so great for eating. read more

Mazzola is our go-to neighborhood bread bakery. They have some desserts but really the stars of this postage stamp-sized place are the bagels, breads, and a small selection of surprisingly good sandwiches that you can pull from a bin on the counter. I can't comment on the 'lard bread-o-mania' of other yelpers, we haven't tried it yet... but the bagels are outstanding. Get there early enough on a weekend morning and the bagels are so fresh they'll slap you in the face. And at less than a buck per bagel - they are a steal. Tips for visitors: 1. Mazzola is tiny. Walk in the door and stick to the LEFT. Keep putting one foot in front of the other until you get to the back of the line, somewhere by the glassed in pastries. If you stop at the counter to eye the bagels... congrats, you are blocking the rest of us. 2. Know what you want before you get to the front. With all the cries of "lard bread!" being thrown around, it's impossible not to try it if you happen upon Mazzola. I had no clue what it was when I bought it and didn't understand why it was being kept warm or even that it was meant to be eaten by itself. I was even more confused when I saw little pieces of ham just hanging around in there. After taking a bite though, I realized the infatuation many have with it. It's very unique and distinctive and although I thought the ham overwhelmed the loaf with its heavy, peppery kick, the bread itself was some of the best I've had in recent memory. The lard transformed a normal Italian variety into a buttery, almost croissant-like texture. Frankly, I would have thought the bread to be even more enjoyable without the ham. The area around my feet as I sat on a bench outside became a menagerie of pigeons, sparrows and passing dogs that stopped dead in their tracks to sniff at the pavement for crumbs. Mazzola also seems to attract the elderly (I'm not comparing them to birds or dogs) who are hard to impress and always have impeccable taste in baked goods.. Mazzola has a reputation that precedes it but has so far dodged the yuppiness that sometimes accompanies being an institution. Mazzola is a little hole in the wall bakery, but they make fantastic breads, muffins etc. Its all always wonderfully fresh tasting. I don't think I ever had something I disliked from Mazzola, but my personal favorite has to be a loaf of olive bread complimented by a little olive oil and some salt. I can easily eat a whole loaf in a sitting in this fashion. So we conducted an official blind-bagel-taste-test between Mazzola, La Bagel Delight and Court St Bagels. The competition was stiff, but Mazzola was the clear winner. They were out of their famed lard rolls so we tried a lard pretzel instead. A pretzel baked with cheese and prosciutto. It was even better than it sounds. My husband works in the area and always grabs coffee & fresh baked breads from Mazzola. He recommended the hazelnut coffee. So I had the opportunity (while attending his award ceremony) to try it for myself. OMG, the coffee was delicious! The aroma and sweet taste was overwhelming. Be sure to let them know not to OD with the sugar. The croissants, bagels, and breads are freshly baked in the mornings. In fact, it's so fresh that the owner walked into the kitchen, took out a dozen freshly baked loaves and loaded into his car (on a Sat). The staff are friendly and extremely prompt with orders. After getting my coffee and chocolate croissant (highly recommended), I sat on one of the benches outside to gaze the morning view. Sourdough baguettes, bing! I'm from San Francisco and you are hard pressed to find a tasty sourdough here in town. I think that baguette actually sold me on the apartment! lol I went back a second time to try them on their chocolate croissant. And, boy am I glad I did! I think it's the best I have ever had. Run by three generations of bakers, this corner bakery is a wonderful place to go for fresh bread or coffee. They supposedly offer hot bread hourly, and even though the loaves we bought last night weren't fresh from the oven, they were extremely fresh and delicious. C. and I picked up the Italian bread and a loaf of ciabatta to take to a friend's cookout. Both were excellent -- and apparently a hit, as both loaves had been devoured by the time we left. The brie cheese we brought was also polished off, but it seems as though smoked gouda might not be that popular a cheese; the people hardly touched it. I plan to return to try their other offerings. The perfect neighborhood bakery usually serving a mix of cops, moms, grandparents, and single people running errands. They do a great job with breads, rolls, and standard raised donuts. I particularly like the multi-grain loaf, which is a little more dense with a hint of sweetness. The spinach parmesan bread is a delicious savory treat. Note to parents and caregivers: strollers are too big for this little store. You can cram them in, but it's not fun for anyone including you, when your child's legs hit the containers full of cupcakes, knocking them on the floor and forcing you to feel like you have to buy them. read more
