This is a neighborhood classic and favorite famously known for their Lard Bread ($8). I had the boyfriend pick up a loaf along with a regular Italian Baguette ($3.25). The bread is thick being soft and fluffy inside while crispy on the outside. This is my first time trying lard bread and it's amazing! It's a load of bread stuffed with cubes of prosciutto and black pepper for a nice savory and spicy kick. Was looking forward to coming here because I heard such great reviews but it was not it for me. I ordered the tiramisu, leaf cookies and the powdered sugar almond cookies. The tiramisu tasted like it had definitely been sitting out all day but it also lacked flavor and the cookies tasted stale. I've lived in New York my entire life and not exactly sure I ever had lard bread also called prosciutto bread before. I think I may have had it as part of the bread basket at Park Side in Corona but today was the first time I specifically looked for it. I actually heard of this place from this Italian guy on IG called Brooklynbitess that awarded this the number one prosciutto bread out of the 10 or so spots he tried. The food: Prosciutto/Lard Bread- I had it cold and I thought it was still really good, I had it heated the next day and it really was much better after heated. It's very pepper forward and I enjoyed that the bread wasn't too salty from the prosciutto. I really enjoyed the chew from the bread, it had a nice softness but the outside had a nice crunch. Very happy to know that Mazzola's is still open during quarantine. Also, there's a large assortment of cookies (sold by the pound, 1/2 lb, 1/4 lb, or solo pieces of $1) and a few baked goods (e.g. scones, muffins) if you want something sweet to accompany the lard bread. All you need to know is that this is one of the few places that still makes lard bread. It is salty, peppery and fatty in all the right ways. Note that you can put them in the freezer and when you reheat it, it tastes as though it's fresh. Always buy an extra load for the freezer. Be careful as they can run out on some days. read more

Excellent sfogiatella, it has the perfect crusty exterior punctuated by a smooth interior. This was not a total mess to eat. Their Linzer tart was hard and did not appear to be fresh. Beware the cashiers are stealing and giving back incorrect change. I was in there today around 2pm. The woman working told me my total was $13.50. After giving her $20 she only gave me $2.50 back. So I questioned the incorrect change at which point she told me it was actually $18.50. Well that is not what she said or what I was rung up for. It is also not the correct change for the more expensive price. So when I got home I weighed my cookies and sure enough, she overcharged me by $5. Pay your employees more so they are not stealing from the customers. It feels really dirty to be stealing from neighbors.
