Located a block from the 9th Avenue D train in the industrial northern reaches of Sunset Park, the weekend-only Moonrise Bakehouse certainly fits the bill. Bread is really the specialty here, and I'd recommend focusing on that. We tried the dense corn rye, which was incredible with a dab of butter. The proprietors warned that it's a hearty calorie-dense bread, and so we knew to sample in small proportions. I also enjoyed the chocolate oatmeal cookie, which brought over some of the same rustic flavors of the bread. The berry muffin was the only thing I might skip on my next visit - it just wasn't as memorable as everything else. read more

Local spot that you might miss if you don't know about it. Everything I've gotten here is fresh and homemade! The brownies and strawberry rhubarb muffins are amazing. They also have baked breads, cookies, and other delicious desserts. You can tell that the folks working at this shop are passionate about making good baked goods and sharing their love for it with the community. I love this bakery. The owners are so nice and everything is baked fresh daily. The baguettes are to die for- I end up eating half of one before even getting home because what's better than a crunchy baguette with a soft chewy interior? The sourdoughs here are also amazing. Give the whole grain ones a try, it's nothing like the dry tasteless stuff you get at a grocery store. They also have desserts- I love the brownies and the pan de elote. Also, for the entire month of September on Fridays and Saturday's (I think, pls check their insta) they have these flatbread pizzas. I got a margherita pizza which has a perfectly balanced sauce, slightly tangy, and fresh mozzarella. It's a hole in the wall shop but definitely come check it out. First off, Cynthia & TJ are awesome! They are super friendly & nice. They take time to have a conversation with their customers, they don't just take your money & rush you away. I've only tried their baguettes, brownies, & tahini cookies but they are always great! The baguettes are usually warm, crispy outside & soft inside. The only thing is you have to eat it within a day, 2 at the most. She doesn't use yeast so they will get hard fast. The brownies are very rich & chocolatey! Grab a cup of milk. They are moist & so tasty. And the tahini cookies have lots of big chocolate chips. Update: I wanted to try one of their other breads. There was one loaf that was looking especially good. I asked TJ what it was & he said " rye". I told him I usually don't like rye. He said, "Hold on. I want you to smell something," and let me get a whiff of caraway seeds. He said "when people say they don't like rye, it's usually the caraway seeds they don't like." The smell was somewhat familiar but it's been years since I've tried rye because I stay away from it. TJ said they make rye with & without caraway so they can please more customers taste buds. I decided to take a chance & try the rye sans caraway. I was pleasantly surprised - rye Does taste good! What an INCREDIBLE bakery, absolutely one of the best in New York. First off, the owners are super kind and welcoming, TJ and Cynthia are always down to answer questions about the bakes, and they make the place so inviting. So far, I've had an almond croissant, a regular croissant, one of the little gf cookies, and some sesame sourdough crackers. All have been 10/10. Belgium Chocolate Chip Cookie is a must try! This small bread shop is really tucked away from the busy corner on the main streets, but that sweet smell of freshly baked bread will draw you in. Check their time schedule before heading out to this bread shop as they only open on certain times. Owner recommended the Chocolate chip cookie since it's one of the popular items. And she was right, the cookie tasted so good, I couldn't stop eating. Wanted to try their Sweet Potato bread but was told it will be available next month. Boss lady just took piping hot Carmelized Onion Sourdough bread out of the oven, so I bought the bread instead. Owner said to let the bread cool off a bit before cutting into it to let the bread retain its taste and texture. I liked Sourdough bread as it's kind of chewy; goes great on butter. There are so many complicated storylines that could go into this review, starting with the date, which, if you happen to read this a year or two from now, you might remember as Month Two of the NYC pandemic lockdown. But have no fear, fellow yelpers, I say let those stories be told elsewhere, and let's just celebrate the joy of delicious baking you'll find at the Moonrise Bakehouse. It's a modest neighborhood shop in Sunset Park, far from civilization some might say, but more like civilization's epicenter if you happen to live in that neighborhood, and the locals know it. The bakery had been a dream of proprietor Cynthia's for a long long time, and she finally made it happen last fall. Her vision has achieved its ultimate fulfillment here. To put it simply, the offerings are unique, the quality top notch, and the experience completely satisfying. Everything works, everything is delicious. Although there were several radical breads on the menu, our focus was strictly the sweet stuff for this visit, the pastries: Challah cinnamon rolls with maple glaze, cardamon orange rolls, linzer cookies, rugelach, a coffee cake with a crazy good glaze on it, and a few slices of a lemon buttermilk bundt cake. Just look at the pictures, they're no exaggeration, it tasted as good as they look. The creative flourishes elevated things to the sublime. Cynthia can bake, and her choices rock. Hopefully times will change and the business will grow because I'd love to find these pastries at my favorite coffee places around town. Moonrise's offerings are incredibly tasty and quite unique. I happened to discover Moonrise during the 2020 pandemic, and their baked goods have been a source of comfort and joy during the craziness. First of all, the folks who run the place are truly very nice and friendly. They're warm and helpful. Second, the breads are very, very delicious and well prepared. The varieties are always high quality, interesting, flavorful, and creative. Our favorite is the sweet potato sourdough. The olive is also awesome though. And of course the kalamata olive bread has the perfect little tang. The challah is beautiful. Yes, I've developed a Pavlovian response to the sight of the green vehicle. We've become very spoiled by this bread and I can't imagine eating the supermarket stuff any longer. Finally, those chocolate chip walnut cookies are highly addictive. I initially purchased them with the intent to share, but now I keep them all 3 or 4 for myself and allow myself to eat just one per day until they're gone. They are little treasures. This little shop bakes the best bread, cookies and croissants I have ever eaten. I can't claim to have done an exhaustive survey, but if you told me this is the best bread in NYC at the moment, I wouldn't blink. What makes it better, if that's even possible, is how out of the way it is. If you dropped this place in Soho, there would be a line up the street. In Sunset Park, I'm often the only person in the shop. As far as I can tell, it's just three old hippies with a little storefront working their hippie yeast sorcery. Somebody is always pulling something out of the oven. Today it was pain au chocolat baked with butter they imported from Normandy. I also got some shortbread cookies that are perfect. And a baguette that is bonkers good. I am in rapture. If you're not making the trek out here for bread, you need to question your whole life. read more

All I wanted was a loaf of whole wheat bread and found this gem on google randomly. There's definitely a deep love for bread and baking here, very knowledgeable staff (owners??) who are enthusiastic about their goods. Also love how the portions are reasonable, not gigantic cookies or cinnamon rolls that really shouldn't be eaten in one sitting. I have this huge craving for sourdough bread all the time. And I mean all the time. I usually go out to Whole Foods to get it but the travel is too far for me unless I am specifically running errands in the city. I found this little place through searching online and it is a gem. It's a tiny shop and the man and woman that was there is so nice. I placed a order online for pick up and when I got the message to pick up, I walked there. The nice man told me that if I didn't finish all the bread, that it would be good to slice it up and freeze it till the next time so we wouldn't waste any. The nice lady was making more bread as I went to get mines. The bread was still hot in the bag. Fresh out of the oven. It smelled great and when I got home, first thing I did was slice it up and enjoyed it. The slight crunch on the outside and soft chewiness inside had me drooling. Tiny shop... I tried the sourdough (mixed grain?) Boule. Wow! That is some wonderful bread. I also got some of the chocolate chip cookies. A friend of mine gave me some treats from this place. And all I can say is wow! The tasty oatmeal cookie had chocolate inside which was a nice surprise. And it was my first time trying the orange cardamom roll- OMG so soft and scrumptious, you can really taste the orange zest! Can't wait to try some other goodies from this bake house. read more
