Whoa!! This pastry: espresso/ gelato shop is a don't miss it spot! They make large and mini versions of all things traditional. I don't know what kind of chocolate they use but it is the best! I've order specialty pastries and imported chocolate and vanilla but here it is in one place. Bring your kids, family and visiting guests. This is what the fakes try to imitate. I'm a sucker for a bakery, so as soon as we walked by - we back tracked and walked in. The mini lobster tails were delicious, as were the key lime tarts. We got thumbprint cookies and something that reminded me of a Kouign Amann, which were also great. My biggest disappointment was the tiramisu as I found that almost inedible. I'm not sure if it was just a bad batch or what, but it was sour, dry, and the bitter from the chocolate only enhanced the undesirable. Feast for your eyes and stomach. I love everything about this bakery/Italian Pastry shop. Can easily be uprooted and planted on a trendy Manhattan neighborhood block. There's so much to love here. As a follow up, I tried the linzer cookie again at Monteleone and they have gone back to a more substantial cookie but the flavor is lacking, Worse yet, they used to use real raspberry jam, smooth with seeds, the real thing. Now they are using what I call, fake jam, it's like a thick paste with no seeds. I hope Monteleone will stop cutting corners and go back to using quality ingredients. For now, Cousin John's in Park Slope is one of the last bakeries that does not compromise on their quality, they are always consistent. Monteleone needs to follow that formula, people notice when things change. read more

This bakery smells amazing upon walking in, with the vast array of pastries and sweets available to fulfill your cravings. There were several patrons there on an early mid-week afternoon so you know this place is popular and their treats are good. I tried their cross-bun and for my first time ever trying, it was pretty good, reminded me a bit of a fruitcake. The staff were busy so we waited a few minutes to be serviced which was not bad a all. If I leaved near Monteleone, I would probably be here every day. This is a true, old school Italian bakery with a fantastic variety of pastries and cookies. We got half a pound of mixed cookies and I wish we had ordered more! All of the cookies were excellent but some of them were truly among the best Italian cookies I've had, especially the pignoli cookie- these were absolutely incredible and I think I could've had half a pound of just these! The pistachio cookie was also delicious and had so much real pistachio flavor. I didn't catch the name, but there was also an oval-shaped cookie with jam and almond paste that was fantastic. You can tell the cookies are made with high quality ingredients and it just feels like a cute, charming neighborhood place. I would make a trip to Brooklyn just for these. read more

I usually come here at nights before coming to work, for the occasional cannoli run. The staff is super nice, the cannolis are great. Sometimes, the staff is nice enough to throw in an extra cannoli or 2 at no charge, when they are about to close. The box they put it in is nice too read more

We love this place! We can't walk by Monteleone's without grabbing a couple of treats to take home. They do have a couple of two person tables outside if you simply cannot wait...not that I have ever been too impatient to eat a cannoli myself, nope. They have a great variety including classic cookies, traditional Italian cookies, tarts, cannolis, mini cakes, slices of cheesecake, even hamentashen, to name a few. They have gelato in the back too. The woman who was working the counter was very nice and patient, explaining the desserts we were not familiar with. Prices are fair too- lot of the smaller items are ~$2 per piece. read more

Pastries were good. Traditional. All the favorites etc. The rice balls might be good if warmed up- I figure they'd ask if I want it warmed up if it wasn't fresh and already warm. So when I ate it it was blah. cold and bleh. They have a couple tables out front. We sat there for abt 10 mins- had our pastries set out with my 2 young children- and was told by one of the owners we had to leave right then bc they were about to start construction work. Not even an- I apologize but in 5 minutes we have to stop using the tables out front, To show slight courtesy and give us a few minutes. I just bought a bunch of goods from your place- maybe give me and my kids a 5 min warning..? So, I started packing us up, and the owner started to go back inside. Then the construction worker told me he would start in 15 minutes to allow us time and not have to rush out of there. I appreciated that so much, if you know going around with your littles you get settled you want to finish up and not have to abruptly pack up and go. We left anyway bc I was over being there. Overall- fine to pick up some pastries and go, but definitely don't expect any effort from the staff to think past their noses. read more

Went to my dentists new office around the block and decided to grab a few treats before going home for my boyfriend who has sweet tooth. Got a cannoli, bunch of random cookies, key lime tart, and fruit tarts, and a Napoleon cake. Overall the total was 12 dollars for a good little assortment of cakes. I'm something of a contrarian, and also an NYC transplant desperate to be considered savvy and good enough at navigating this chaotic, beautiful city. So, a few years ago, I determined that I'd never buy another Junior's cheesecake again. I want to have ... a cheesecake spot, I told myself. It had to be authentically Brooklyn, make me feel like I was onto something that no one else knew about, better than everyone, more insistent on authenticity and quality. Who was this supposed to impress?? Unclear, but I found Monteleone Bakery a few years ago, and ever since, when someone tells me to bring dessert, I show up with one of their cheesecakes. The little touches are what tell you this place is legit: the owner's Alfa Romeo with a CANNOLI license plate. The string holder hanging from the ceiling that they use to box up your treats. The endless supply of Italian cookies, cakes, and pies. And the cheesecake! It's everything I love in cheesecake: creamy but not mushy, firm but not crumbly, sweet but not cloying. The transplant in me -- safely hidden but threatening to pop out at any time -- wishes they had a raspberry compote on top -- but I am afraid to ask. Maybe that's not authentic. I don't know. Wow. Second time visiting Monteleone bakery and completely wowed this time. Took another visit to see the amount of amazingly gorgeous specially Italian Bakery items in here. Went with a full Cassata cake and gorgeous pasticiotti. Unbelievable how good looking it all was. Saw real deal Italian chocolate eggs wrapped for Easter. My only regret not leaving with one. Already have a few for the holiday but these looked worth trying. The baker is the owner and his daughter let me pick the most gorgeous cake with no fuss. Even though in the back of the display. I'm not a big dessert guy, but F Monteleone has helped me find my favorite cookie in the world. Of course, they've also got all of your Brooklyn bakery basics, like Italian flag/seven layer cookies, pignoli, butter cookies, thumbprint cookies, almond cookies, fruit tarts, eclairs, etc. But they also have stuff I've never even had before (granted, my bona fides only include growing up in Bensonhurst and going to many, many Italian family dinners). The gamechanger was this half-frollini, half amaretti fusion. My friend bought them for a party, and I just had to go back to buy more for myself and my family. The woman behind the counter said she didn't think they had a special name, so just look at my photos because they're hard to describe. They come in pistachio or almond (both are amazing). If anybody knows what it's called, DM me! Anyway, if you're there, just look in the case for cookie that looks like two cookies in a state of mitosis. And then BUY ALL OF THEM. But save me a few. They also do custom cakes, some of which are hilarious. Like a decapitated snowman head or one that looks like a cheeseburger. Lines can get long around the holidays, but it moves fast. This review is based on dessert only considering I haven't been in the bakery. After eating the cookies and cannolis, I have to venture to the bakery to check it out in the future. My friend brought trays of Italian cookies and cannolis as dessert for each table of a banquet I attended. When I saw cannolis, I couldn't wait to dive into the tray since I live cannolis. If you are looking at the picture, yes, it's missing one and I didn't take it. Another attendee dived in before I could take a picture, so you know it's good. Review (so far) is only for the cookies and they're good enough that they deserve all the praise. I got a bit over a pound of cookies to bring to a small party a little while back with a bit more of some cookies than others. Basically all I tried were tasty with special note to anything made of marzipan/almond paste. I'm unsure why the almond paste here is just better than every other Italian cookie spot I have been to but yes they are amazing and they blow places like Veneiros out of the water. This includes the amaretti such as the amaretti di assello (center of my photo/the macaron looking thing) and the pistachio and almond paste cookie. Just highly recommended and reasonable especially for something made of almond paste. I didn't try their rainbow cookies as I am generally not a fan but the person who did really like it also. The only disappointment was the one at the bottom which was like a chocolate chip cookie. Nothing bad but just overall not as flavorful and the chocolate here is just alright. I'll definitely be back to try more things such as their pignolis or lobster tail or more likely I'll just buy a lot more amaretti as those are quite addictive. Really can't tell you completely what makes Monteleone's tick- but this place has old-school Italian Bakery written all over it. Since we'd just finish with lunch (sans dessert) across the street, this place came handy for something sweet and goodies to bring to my Mom. Our Sunday visit here- was short and sweet. Really like the woodsy features, brassy touches and those mini hexagon floor tiles. Well-stocked, glass-enclosed shelves, full of Italian yumminess, run from end to end. Only picked out a 1/4lb of mixed cookies for Mumsy which she liked- and even with that small amount, the Pignoli cookie I tried, was very good. But what knocked it out of the ballpark for that quick moment we were there, was my freaking Gelato with a scoop of Chocolate and Nutella. Geez...they were fantastic! While hubby enjoyed his Lemon Italian Ice. I don't know about you, but have you ever had ice cream and as it's melting in your cup (or bowl), the ice cream just accumulates around it and forms like a little pool of creaminess? I love that sh*t!!! That's exactly what happened to my Chocolate and Nutella Gelato as we strolled around. For less than $15, I thought price was decent for my 2 Gelato scoops, Large Italian Ice and 1/4lb box of cookies. Service was pleasant and I'll say this much, Monteleone's seems like a gem and pastries looked good from where I was standing. I think I found my new "go to" bakery!! We ordered a variety of pastries and they were all wonderful! The price is also very good which is rare lately at a lot of bakeries. Everything tasted fresh. The lobster tail was crispy and the filling was light and not too sweet. The mini key lime tart was so tasty, not too tart with fluffy whipped cream. The cannolis, some of the best we have had! If there were an Italian Bakery near me in the Bay Area I would gain 50lbs! This place is incredible with tons of cookies, pies, cakes, and THE CANNOLI. Not being a Cannoli king, I have nothing to compare to and from what I understand this is the real deal. At first bite I didn't really see the big deal about the cannoli bit after a minute or so I thought it was good. The outer cannoli was a nice crispy, flaky outer cannoli pastry stuffed with ricotta cheese. This bakery is run by a husband and wife team and they do a great job running the bakery. If you are a cannoli fan this is apparently a top notch cannoli.
