I wanted a simple pastry to enjoy with my caffeinated beverage. I was about to get a slice of banana bread when something called sochnik caught my eye. The lovely barista informed me that they were delicious and their most popular pastries and I can definitely see why. Here is the definition from Google. A sochnik (plural: sochniki) is a traditional Russian and Eastern European baked pastry made from a soft, tender shortcrust or scone-like dough folded into a semi-circle and filled with sweet farmer's cheese or quark (tvorog). This was simple yet delicious. A flaky buttery outside with sweet farmers cheese inside. It paired spectacularly with my oat milk Cappucino.

Staff is usually fast and friendly so it's a quick in and out, and a few times I've come late in the day for rice rolls and they've made a fresh one for me if I'm willing to wait. They have a good variety of buns and dim sum, plus some homemade specialty items like put jai go and zhong zi. I like their pineapple buns, the custard one is always sold out by the afternoon so I'll get the red bean bun instead. They also mentioned they can do cake orders with a few hours notice if they're not too busy. I haven't tried their drinks yet since I'm always there for the baked goods. There's two tables inside and they're almost always taken by local seniors enjoying their tea time. Super convenient spot right by the 18th Ave D train to grab a drink or bite.

I have to say I was initially excited when I saw how much raisins there were in their bread. When I took it home, it was a whole different story. I felt scammed. I've been going to Il Fornaretto's 17th Avenue location in Bensonhurst for years, and I can…read moregenuinely say they make my favorite bread anywhere. Their Prosciutto Bread is my personal favorite -- cubed prosciutto, black pepper, cheese, and incredibly soft fresh bread. It's honestly good enough to be a meal by itself. I recently visited their 5th Avenue location in Bay Ridge, and what makes this spot even better is that it's not just a bread store -- it's a full bakery. The Onion Bread was fantastic, with sweet caramelized onions over soft focaccia. The Olive Bread, made with imported Sicilian black olives, had a great crust outside while staying soft and pillowy inside. Their seeded Semolina Twist is another must, especially warmed up with some butter or good olive oil. The sweets were just as impressive. The cannoli are filled to order, which makes a huge difference -- crispy shell and a delicious creamy filling. The pistachio croissant doughnut was buttery, soft and packed with pistachio cream, while the pistachio Cookie Tart was probably one of the most unique things I tried. The Biscoff Cake was also excellent and definitely worth trying if you're a Biscoff fan. And I can't forget the round focaccia with tomato sauce and onions. Warm that up slightly and it becomes seriously addictive. Il Fornaretto has been a favorite of mine for a long time, and after visiting the Bay Ridge location, I have even more reasons to recommend them. Whether you visit Bensonhurst strictly for the bread or Bay Ridge for the full bakery experience, this is absolutely a place worth checking out.

Mushroom and chicken boxed rice - lots of chicken bone shards and too little pieces of Chinese sausage slices. Mixed rice noodle with fish ball - the fish ball option was something I requested for over the phone when they notified me one item that I ordered ran out. The fish ball was really tiny and on the harder side. Really not good quality fish balls. The rice noodle was not silky and smooth. The sauce was the worst part. Not enough sauce and too watered down. The flavors that's usually in the sauce were very subtle. Pork floss cheese loaf bread - the slices of bread were thick and fluffy so I was impressed. The pork floss cheese could be better. Not enough pork floss. Sounded better on paper Steamed Custard bun - it was a big bun so I excitedly ripped it apart but I found some weird charcoal color particles in the custard filling when I did that. Not sure what it was but in case it's a dead insect ripped apart, I threw out the whole bun Ham and cheese bun - just ok. I've had better at other bakeries. But again quite impressed with how fluffy the bread was Cha Siu bun - too oily on the exterior

The pineapple bun was fresh so the texture of the bread was very good.
