Tiny, no frills Italian bakery. Stopped in while picking up Lucali pizza down the block. Had a sfoigiatelle and sfinge (St. Joseph's pastry with cannoli cream). Both were very delicious. The sfoigiatelle was perfectly crunchy with many, many layers. The interior was moist and had a ton of citrusy/anise flavor. If you've never had their lard bread, you are missing out! I've had it more than a few times, but I'd actually never been to the historic Mazzola myself to pick one up. I guess I'm just lucky that they sell it at other shops (like Mekelburg's, for instance). Stopped in on a Saturday to pick up some things. The lard bread was ready to go, but they were out of sourdough and asked if I wanted to wait 5 minutes for a fresh loaf. I can't turn down fresh bread (even if it was closer to 15 minutes). It took everything in my power not to sneak a bite before I made it to my friend's house. Here's a pro-tip - throw the lard bread in the oven for 5-10 minutes and it'll be SO much better. But you can eat it room temperature too, because it's just the most amazing bread you'll ever have. Lots of prosciutto chunks make it nice and savory. You could have it as a side, but honestly, it makes a great appetizer by itself. Staff is ultra friendly (saw them deftly dealing with some more... let's say difficult customers). Plus they have a ton of baked goods for your sweet tooth, as well as coffee and soft drinks. Definitely make your way over if you've never been! read more

The reason we make the 20 minute walk every couple of weeks is for the great classic Italian food and pastries... not the workers that make us feel unwelcome and as if we are inconveniencing them. I love their Lard bread...it's peppery, fresh and love the little bit of burnt on top....just so good. Also tried the lemon cake today was very moist and not overly sweet. This place is a hidden gem in Carroll Gardens Brooklyn. My girlfriend who is a Brooklyn native took me here and it didn't look like much when we first arrived. After a short line we went in and saw a moderate selection of breads and pastries, we bought two of the lard breads otherwise known as prosciutto bread. They had other bread options as well and it seems like they kept coming out with more as the day went on because the bread that we got was still a little hot. We ripped off a piece of the lard bread and I could not believe how delicious it was. Not only was the bread soft and fresh but there was meat in every single bite, which is more than I can say for the other meat breads that I have had. We finished one entire loaf before we even got back to New Jersey. This place is the real deal if you want some fresh local bread or other baked items; this is the place to go. Absolutely fantastic Bakery I'm from New York City but I live in Florida now and I was dying for some Lard bread, and tricolor cookies. I placed an order for these and as usual FedEx messed up and the entire order was lost for a week which means when it arrived It was not good, the people at the bakery was so kind that they replace the entire order and even threw in extra tricolor cookies. The quality of these products was phenomenal. The service was impeccable. The Lard bread, and the tricolor cookies are the best I have ever had I would have uploaded a picture but I can't because I ate everything before I thought to take a picture anyway, do you have a customer for life? I will be re-ordering again unless of course you open the bakery in Florida then I'll just come and get it fresh every day. Great job people. read more

OBSESSED with their lard bread! They're located around the corner from Lucali's, so was able to pick up a few loaves during my (excruciating) long wait for a table. They also had very, very generous slices out as samples. I brought one loaf to share with my buddies and one to take home. After my friends sampled it, they immediately ran over to buy their own! Can skew slightly salty, but chock full of yummy cured meat. Super spongy bread. Makes the perfect snack! read more

We got 3 loaves of lard bread, a plain loaf, a whole grain bread, cinnamon roll and some breadcrumbs. The lard bread and whole grain were INCREDIBLE. Definitely some of the best bread I've had in NYC. We went right before closing and the small breads were buy 1 get 1, which is how we ended up with the whole grain and cinnamon roll. Update: A very kind Mazzola employee, reached out to me hoping to resolve the issue! She was very caring and wanted to resolve the issue, ensuring that the workers are never rude. I really appreciated her concern, and time she put in with me. I did go back again, and the workers who were there this time were so nice, and even gave my son a fresh muffin when they looked out. I'm hoping to never have the experience I had because this is a great bakery. I am so disappointed with this place. I grew up going here so was excited to go again after moving back to brooklyn. Today was my last straw with this place. Half the girls at the counter are rude, and act annoyed as I order things. When I order an hazelnut coffee, light and sweet, I saw her use mainly iced coffee with a splash of the hazelnut coffee, and she added no sugar. It tasted awful. Then I ordered a croissant, warmed up, and when I got it, it was still cold. The girl was absolutely awful. I have not always had this experience, but being that it is such a hit or miss, I don't really want to waste my money here. read more

Extremely disappointed. I've been wanting to come to Mazzola's for so long and we finally made the trek over. We walked inside but left quickly to grab cash. In that time they had packaged up all the desserts we wanted to buy. We arrived at 6:30, an hour and a half before their 8pm closing time(!). When we arrived the two girls working had packaged up all the rainbow cookies, black and white cookies and told us that the cannoli cream was already frozen so we could not buy any of them. They told us it was all packaged because they were closing in an hour and a half. I am so incredibly disappointed in the horrible customer service we received. Mazzola's, if your doors are open, nothing should be packaged an hour and a half before closing. I will not be coming back but I hope the owners take control of this situation with the employees. Best bakery in the area !!! Family owned and operated , the lard bread is to die for and the croissants are so fresh and amazing. The waitress at campania resturant recommend to come here and I'm glad I did and I will always be back !!! Small but great neighborhood italian bakery. Got the lard bread here. First time ever trying and I was instantly hooked. Super fluffy bread with hint of cheese and chunks of salami baked into the bread. Perfect snack before hitting up lucali down the block. God Bless America. This was the sentiment running through my mind as I returned from Mazzola Bakery & Cafe this morning, having purchased my large coffee and muffin. Not because of the historic presidential election returns a few days earlier. Not even because Mazzola has a wide assortment of excellent baked goods and breads, tantalizing cookies and cupcakes, and a well lighted display case that would feel no shame at the Museum of Natural History. But because not long before this, I'd been waiting in line at Naidres coffee shop only a block away, with only one person in front of me, while the two wooly Peter Tork hat wearing, Indigo Girl listening, well-tattooed hipster server chicks bantered on with each other about the holiday schedule as one hovered over the cash register with an unmoving index finger as the minutes passed, refusing to acknowledge that there was another customer in line. Don't get me wrong. I'm far from a type-A personality, and rarely become impatient. But if the place down the street places more value on the satisfaction of their customers, why not exercise your free will to support them with your dollars? Within seconds of entering Mazzola (and it works this way every time) one of the pleasant and attentive women behind the counter was querying "what can we do for you, honey?" and within one minute I was on my way with hot coffee and muffin. Yes this place has excellent baked goods, yes it adds to the neighborhood, and yes their lard bread just screams "Brooklyn." But today I appreciate it for making me glad to be an American - where a better choice is often little more than a block away. Superior service and attitude, and far better value. 4/09: A follow-up reaffirmation. Walked by Naidres this morning on my way to Mazzola and noted five people in line. Got to Mazzola with seven people in front of me, was out with my coffee and muffin in five minutes, and when I walked by Naidres those same people were still lined up. 4/10: Another Mazzola follow up, one year after the above. Place still keeps it very real - great service, no pretense, and fine products. Stopped in Naidres the other day just to make sure my comparisons still held up. They are under some kind of new management, at least in the kitchen, but all seems the same. This joint reminds me a bit too much of why I stopped going to cafes in San Francisco - too many female managers with severe haircuts putting their testosterone on prominent display where the baked goods should be. Give me Mazzola's consistent, friendly, and above all - efficient - staff any day. And make sure to try their pumpkin pie during the holiday season - a cut above the foo-foo celebrity chef Sweet Melissa up on Court. And, finally, for a satisfying Mazzola morning meal logging in at a whopping five bucks, the ham and cheese croissant (particularly when fresh out of the oven) and large coffee are irreproachable. read more

My friend and I are not drinkers. I know this is a weird way to start my review of this Brooklyn bakery. Let me explain. We were waiting for Lucali to open. We had already waited since 3:15 to get our slot (the fastest one available ofc). So by 5:30, we were very cold and wet. The day was dreary. All the advice online about Lucali-waiting said to go to the bar. Not practical for us. So we ducked in here. Which was super warm and cozy. Downside was that there were no place to sit. Upside all the cookies and stuff were really cheap. The staff was pretty chill with our respectful loitering. Again, thank you Bakery establishment. Italian confections aren't really my thing but the cookies we tasted were too good after the rain and cold combined with the warmth. I come here every now and then to order bread for our traditional Sunday family brunch. If I'm not making bread then we are buying it. This is a small corner bakery with different pastry and bread options. This Sunday I ordered an Italian and sourdough baguette. The sourdough has a tougher texture than the Italian but they were both soft on the inside with a crunchy crust. The staff does there best to keep the traffic and orders moving at a fast pace. In the past I have also ordered a sourdough loaf and the lard bread. The lard bread I will say adds the umph to the taste of the bread. It has a nice peppery, not spicy, salty taste to it. I'm a cash person so it doesn't bother me but be prepared with cash as this is a cash only bakery. Try it, enjoy it and don't say I didn't warn you that the bread is addictive. read more

Came at 6am, first one in the door. I really wanted to try the lard bread so I got one but when she handed it to me and I felt how soft it was and how good it smelled I immediately asked for another. When I got home about 2 hours later it was still soft and warm. I cut myself a big piece from the middle and it was probably the best piece of bread I've ever had. Worth the trip and the money.
