This place is a lovely neighborhood bakery with a very friendly staff; it's perfect for a morning iced coffee-and-pastry run. One of their best items by far is the sfogiatelle - light, scalloped croissant-like crust housing a beautiful combination of candied orange and ricotta filling. If you're a decaf drinker like me, you can't go wrong with their iced decaf hazelnut. It's very flavorful and only needs the smallest splash of milk. You've probably heard a lot about the lard bread from here and for good reason! This bread is really tasty. It's fatty, creamy, meaty deliciousness with some great seasonings, (pepper, rosemary...). I'll admit it. I literally ate an entire loaf in one sitting the first time I tried it. Another great thing about this bakery is the late-night bread selling. You can walk around to the side of the bakery after it's closed and they will sell you fresh bread if you ring the little white doorbell. I bartend and get home late (2 to 4 AM) so this is perfect for me! read more

UGH sorry for piling on. but, they do make the best bagels i've ever had. the bread is fantastic as well. if there were a way to give more points, i would; a knock on the service door at 1a would get you a fresh bagel, hot off. when i lived in carroll gardens, it was toooo easy to go across the street for really good coffee and fantastic bagels. all this and italian desserts cookies as well. i've biked here, from chelsea, a half block from murray's, to get a good bagel. several times. and, they DO toast your bagels. My first bite of my chocolate croissant was delicious - unfortunately I burned the rest of it in the toaster oven. (word to the wise, 5 minutes at 150 degrees is too much!) : ( Our stuffed cheese bread was good, a stuffed spinach bread still waiting in the fridge. Reminds me of Canarsie when I grew up there and ate at least 1 loaf of bread from the local bakery. I have not had bread this good in years. I need to live right next to this place. I had some sort of sandwich roll and also the whole wheat bread. I cannot tell you how good it was. I really (seriously) had a dream about the bread a day after I had my piece of it. Cheap as well. I walk by this bakery every morning on the way to work. a loaf in the window speckled with what I thought was sausage and caught my eye. my dad used to bring similar loaves home from Newark, NJ when I was growing up. one morning, around 730am, I finally bought one. it was still warm and the best thing I'd eaten all month. although everyone is calling it lard bread or salami lard bread, it is sausage bread to me. everyone who I bring it to, loves it. it is the perfect thing to bring to parties. trust me. be warned, you will end up eating more if it than you intend because it is that good but it is heavy. I also once bought an olive loaf but the star of the show is the lard bread. they also seem to have some good looking pastries and sandwiches. I'll update you when I delve into that realm. read more

OH MY GOD! I love love love this place! I came here because of other yelpers but sort of wish I never had. Well, at least my butt wishes I never had. Not only are the croissants perfect and flakey, without being stale or greasy, but the pain au chocolats are TO DIE FOR. As is the almond croissant. This sucker is so good, it's often out by the time my dogs and me get there. The coffee is great, the lard bread is AMAZING (i have never heard of this before - us Canadians don't have it!) and the staff is so lovely. They always call me sweetie and I like that :) read more

My sis in law recommended this place to me for their " lard bread ". I walk in and there is no greeting? Weird ? Fine it's a tough time I guess it's difficult to say hi to customers. I was asking questions about their pastries and the women behind the counter were rude. Rude one word responses, the pregnant women had the worst attitude ! I spend over $70 dollars and left a generous tip which I planned to do because I understand how difficult times are right now. However I will not be returning due to their attitude. Family business, a solid corner bakery with old-school vibe and very attentive staff. Cash only. All said, I felt that the staff did not have time to make recommendations for me or maybe wanted to move the line very quickly. The line was indeed brisk and customers did not seem to stop coming in while I was there. I ordered biscotti, cookies and the lard bread. The lard bread is good. Out of respect to another local lard bread establishment, however, I will point out that Mazzola seems to offer less meat and flavor (some may say that the other place offers too much flavor, but why anyone would say that, who knows). Different strokes for different folks, I guess. The bench outside is welcoming enough for a sit, and the neighborhood in these parts is indeed worth the sit. It is quiet and very neighborhoodly. I have a confession.... For the second time in a row, I stopped by this place to buy something to share with friends (baguettes, canoli, cookies, etc.) and it never made it to their mouths. I've had wonderful timing where freshly baked goods are being put on display still hot out of the oven, making it my obligation to indulge in. I make these excuses to buy extra to share and never actually do. So I am guilty. This place is fantastic. Great service and extremely friendly staff. Even all the other customers are friendly. Delicious everything. My favorites: canoli, chocolate croissants, any assortment of the cookies and freshly baked crusty breads. Most recently, I stopped by here 2 days in a row for Italian Easter Bread (the braided anisette bread with sprinkles and hard-boiled eggs) to share on Easter Sunday and probably have to come by a third day since that last wreath might be gone before Sunday! read more

Instead I had the raspberry rugelach and my sister had a cannoli. She said it was one of the best cannolis she has tasted. Mazzola is just not my taste. I've tried a lot of their breads and they are neither dense nor crusty enough for me. Their Italian loaf is like Albertson's grocery store bread. And their cookies just don't do it for me. And the lines are unjustified. But, like I said, it's not my taste. So, whatever. The reason I don't give Mazzola a one star review is because it's a neighborhood institution. I have never walked by there, any time of day, without seeing someone I know, and invariably stopping for a quick chat. When the weather is nice, there are tables and chairs outside. When they bake, you can smell it for blocks and it smells so good. Mazzola is a destination. People come all the way from Bond Street on the other side of the neighborhood just to get a loaf of bread and an iced tea. I know. One such person is my friend. I assumed it was a sign that the pastries inside the displays weren't anything to write home about when nearly every single patron who walked in after me darted directly for the cooler at the back or the coffee along the wall. Perusing my options, I wasn't impressed with any unique or particularly aesthetically appealing choices, and wasn't in the mood or position to score some Lard Bread. It's cash only and signage is minimal and the staff can be dismissive, a volatile combination. Of those who didn't go to the cooler first, another three people, a cop not excluded, cut me due to the haphazard nature of the operation. ANYWAYS, I went with a single chocolate macaroon for $1.50 (YES, a buckfifty), a "regular hazelnut" "biscotti" (generous with hazelnut in the unconventially shaped biscotti and imparted a crunch due to said nuts; not the twice-baked method, it seems, but tasty, albeit very unpleasantly mealy) and a $1.75 lemon poppy muffin ("assorted muffins"+clueless staff=another bad 1+1) for $4.40 from the young girl behind the counter, resisting the chocolate-dipped raspberry rugelach, which was ordered in an extra-relaxed fashion by the woman in front of me (who cut me, much like jerks who cut you off to sit at a red light). Since many people seems to be crazy about this place, and I am traveling another borough, I decided to go wild on my bread shopping. I got Ciabatta, lard bread, French rolls, and croissant. I also got hazelnut coffee as some yelper recommended. The lard bread is more of 'salami &cheese bread' with tons of peppers. It is pretty tasty. Let's face it how can you go wrong with salami & cheese on yeasty bread. Ciabatta was good, but on a dense side. I like the Ciabatta Trader Joe has, light, and airy. The roll was also good, crunchy outside and chewy inside. Croissant was pretty plain. The coffee was OK, but not sure considering the location, no place to sit and only 12 oz, if they can justify charging $1.75. read more

Cute little bakery in a cute little neighborhood! Great location! It smells phenomenal right when you walk in! I've never heard of Lard bread so when I read it about it on a food blog, I knew I had to look for the bakery with the best one. Up comes, Mazzola Bakery. I woke up early to make sure I got to the bakery before they were sold out. The Lard bread is made out of lard (har har) with salami, herbs, and black pepper. I bought a whole loaf, couldn't resist so pulled it apart and started digging in. It was nothing like I've tasted before. The bread was oily but soft and chewy. There were chunks of salami planted in everywhere and you can see the ton of black pepper they added. So good! Also, it stays fresh and soft for a couple days. Pop them in the over/toaster and they're even better! I also tried the chocolate croissant! That was delish, too! There was a ton of chocolate and it was so soft but still thick in the middle. I can't say it's the best bakery but it's definitely high up on my list. read more

I was walking past my neighborhood bakery at 2:21 a.m. on June 18,2017, and saw racks full of freshly baked bread pushed up against the dirty fire hydrant right outside the back entrance to Mazzola Bakery. See the photos for a clear indication of how this bakery regards sanitation, which was upsetting for me to see as a customer who frequents Mazzola Bakery. Would you like a little dog urine with your loaf? Having bread come in contact with a fire hydrant could infuse your and my bread with the pee and bacteria of this kind. Maybe this is an open invitation for street rats to come nibble on or crawl over loaves of bread too--or to venture inside the wide-open, unattended bakery door at Mazzola Bakery. I have bought bread and croissants from this bakery before, and they were merely adequate--rather bland tasting and with a sub-par sense of craftsmanship, so I was rather disgusted to witness that my bread could have been sitting out in the open on the street like this before I'd purchased it, unprotected from birds, insects, and other vermin. (I also used to buy and have coffee beans ground here, though they were not to my liking either.) If you're like me and would prefer a more sanitary approach to your baked goods, I suggest you consider the photographic evidence that Mazzola Bakery needs to get its cleanliness act together. Avoiding Carbs? Don't come here! You'll buckle! Our family flies from Florida to visit us just to get the bread at Mazzolas. Seriously. I think my italian momma transported to the flavorless flat lands of Florida took home a suitcase of bread last time she was in town. Which of course she froze and rationed out over time. Ok, I admit, I'm too delicate for the lard bread, but that doesn't mean it isn't delicious. Insane. And you'll have to fight off the local cops, firefighters, characters and other neighborhood residents to get it. I once saw a gentleman from the courts leave with 12 loaves. Enough said. The pane italiano is my favorite bread in the house. It's so old school. So simple. Absolutely perfectly light. And it takes a really skilled hand to make it so. I can't say enough about the breads. Everything is very well prices too! Mazzolas is about the size of shoe box. Which makes it's bustle even more fun. People stream in, stream out. The fire hydrant area serves as a quick park for the "I gotta get a loaf for sunday dinner" drivers. There's lots of laughter, customers holding the door for one another and if you can get a seat outside you can enjoy the parade of colorful neighborhood characters. It's a real treat to sit out there with excellent coffee and a walnut roll watching the world go by. This is still a somewhat quiet corner of Carroll Gardens not to be missed. read more

What the (expletive) did they do to my beloved Lemon Cake? I would head to Mazzola whenever I'd need my coffee and cake fix - for six years in a row. They HAD the best iced lemon cake - ever. Made with love and yummy goodness and a delish white frosting. Then, one recent day, I walked in to discover a shockingly neon yellow item where the lemon cake used to be. They claimed it was their lemon cake. I tried it. Gross. Not "kinda not what I was expecting" - like, gross. Sickeningly sweet - it tasted "fake" - sooooo not made with love. This echoed the sentiment of a close friend who also found Mazzola to be going a little downhill over the past several months. (Serving cookies they didn't make there, but shipped in from wherever the sticker says; watered down French Vanilla coffee; rushed service.) It was very cute and clean inside and they had all the typical Italian bakery fare and some delicious looking breads. I just got a chocolate covered cookie since I was stuffed from gorging myself on baked goods all day it was really delicious. My absolute favorite chocolate croissant; nice semi-flaky dough and plenty of chocolate filing. The breads are also very good - I'm partial to the sesame loaves - and are fantastic for an Italian dinner. The coffee is a strong, dark roast cup that holds up to milk or sugar if that's your style. Although the donuts aren't baked on the premises those are also quite delicious, offering a nice balance between the chew of a yeast donut and resistance of a cake donut. If you're walking in the neighborhood anytime between 1:00am - 4:00am check around the side of the store to see if you can purchase a fresh baked loaf. read more

I'm not going to argue with anyone who tells me who has the best bread in NYC. Hand's down it's Mazzola's! The Good: My family has been going to Mazzola's for 4 generations! That's over 80 years. Just going to one store and enjoying what one family makes for others to enjoy. Also, their bread is the single most important thing to bring over, when you're going over to see family. Moving on from their bread, their pastries are divine. Specially the Strawberry and Chocolate croissants. The Bad: Sometimes the girls behind the counter can have an attitude with the customers. I understand that everyone can't be happy-go-lucky every single day of the week. But sometimes, the girls just get aggravated for no apparent reason. The Terrible: Although the economy has been sucking these past years, the price of flour has gone up. As well as the price for bread. Which sucks. $5.75 for one lard bread is a Hell of a lotta money to pay. But I understand where they're coming from; I just hope that they can somehow lower the price a bit. What I Recommend: Aside from the lowering of the lard bread price, nothing needs to be changed at Mazzola's. The Grade: I gave Mazzola's four stars. Mainly due to it's rich history and their unbelievable product. However, the price did effect me from giving it an overall 5 star rating. read more

I have a weakness for bred. So i am not sure if i should be happy or not that i have tested their bread, since it is too good. I just know that bread is not healthy, and i know that it is better to eat the whole wheat bread, and not too much, but!! since my days in Paris, i did not taste such a good bread, and i just want more. For me, a good bread doesnt need anything more, maybe some Butter, and some extra salt (for me), and the bread at Mazzola i could just eat as it is. Oh, and the Coffee is also great.
