The secret pepper salad (that could be the incorrect name, but it's *something* pepper salad) is incredible and 100% top notch. I added chicken for an extra protein punch. They have a great selection of local beers, with a few on draft, as well as a diverse happy hour menu. My girlfriend got the bistro salad off the happy hour menu. It was slightly smaller than mine, as expected for the happy hour price, but it was absolutely delicious! The atmosphere and ambiance is great, clean and cool. We sat next to a huge window overlooking the mountains and train tracks, which made for a wonderful view! There are also a few vendors outside the market selling locally made and produced goods, which was a welcome addition to our dining experience. read more

We went for Thanksgiving dinner this year, family style. We were sat outside and when booking online through opentable there is no way to state the preference in seating or knowing where we sat. They called a week before and required a credit card on file for reservations which I didn't even know they would do, lucky I answered the phone that night! We were seated outside, they had plenty of heaters but it was COLD for Tucson and there were leaves on the table and very spread out. I did see empty tables inside however even though we had reservations they would not seat us inside. The server Kenneth was outstanding which really saved my rating on the stars! My family and I were not impressed with the family style main course, it was all on one plate: mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberries, turkey, lamb, and stuffing which didn't make any sense and was really weird! We did get extra of the mashed potatoes and stuffing after asking Kenneth and him seeing my mom's face when we were served via 1 plate for 3 people?! The portions were definitely small but the food was good. Quality great! The leaves definitely fell into our drinks and food which was not a great experience and the train going by every 15 minutes or so was not the perfect quiet family meal I had been hoping. The total bill was $200 for 3 people which may or may not have been worth it? Not sure if we will be going back next year but the experience of the service was outstanding! read more

Maynard's is a solid choice, albeit a bit pricey. They usually have a decent vegetarian option but the options can be limited here. The atmosphere in the restaurant is nice and usually quiet. It's great for an intimidate dinner date. read more

I don't know why I haven't reviewed Maynard's market/kitchen. I come here AT LEAST once a week for lunch (market) or dinner/late night (kitchen). I has have never had a bite of food or sip of drink that was less than absolutely perfect. The staff is efficient and professional. If you haven't tried Maynard's you're missing out. read more

Just had a 12 top in one of the upstairs rooms and the waitress handled it like a boss, not a single mistake. She new the thorough with the specials and answered every question we had. The food was excellent but took a little long to arrive. The portions were also a little small and expensive. My wife and I both left hungry... Although we didn't eat much for lunch. The atmosphere was very old school and I dug it. So 4 starts for excellent food, great service, fantastic atmosphere but left me hungry and paying more than I wanted. read more

Food is awesome. Loved the happy hour in the marketplace area. Totally worth it. Got to try my first potato pizza. So great!

Had to wait a little while but was definitely worth it. We felt very welcomed which was perfect since we left another restaurant for being rude. The server was super attentive and nice. We were sitting outside; once it started getting cold, they brought out a heater. The food was great too. We even got a dessert to make up for the wait. Definitely a good time. read more

Menu and atmosphere best suited for over 60 crowd. The servers were great, but there are very limited menu options and the options available are both misrepresented in their description on the menu as well as severely overpriced. It's okay to pay $120 for dinner for two, as long as the food is good.... My husband's steak was very undercooked, the Brussel sprouts were burnt while still undercooked. My Chèvre Chaud salad was three small crostinis with melted goat cheese over one lettuce leaf. This a salad does not make. Will likely not be back. read more

Not bad in the sense that it wasn't great either, and for the pricing, it should be Great. We were a group of 4 on a Friday evening, 7pm. One of the group was celebrating a birthday on Sunday and was the reason for the dinner and in making open table reservation I mentioned that. The hostess sat us and asked "whose birthday" and the guilty party deflected it by saying it was not till Sunday. Nothing more came of that. To start the evening we ordered cocktails. The Margarita, Dirty Garden and Manhattan were all good but the bottle of wine... when a 76$ Cabernet is just ok, drinkable but no where near really good, I'm disappointed. I had asked our waiter to offer an opinion on several cabs and he recommended the Random Ridge. I would definitely pass on that if given the choice again. We ordered oysters and salad and poutine prior to the main courses. The poutine was good, and I would have been starving had we not ordered that to supplement what turned out to be the quite small dinner portions. For dinner, I ordered the Grouper special, which arrived as maybe a 3oz somewhat overcooked fillet that was disappointing. Two others at the table had lamb shank, again a small portion, but a nice big bone, for what that's worth, which isn't much really. We did decide to try their Crème Brule for dessert, it is very good and very large, we ordered one with 4 spoons and it was enough dessert in a healthy sense. None of us has hearing issues, but if you do you may want to find someplace else, or try sitting at the bar where it might be quieter? There is not much to absorb the background noise and the restaurant was full by 8pm and noisy. Also if you need reading glasses, bring them and a flashlight too if you want to see the wine list. Does it really need to be that small a print? Dinner there last year was much better, so maybe it was just the evening but this most recent visit leaves me looking for other venues. read more

Came to Tucson for a quick weekend getaway to celebrate our anniversary. Didn't have any solid dinner plans so decided on Maynards last minute. Loved the ambiance. Not too loud, dim but not too dark. Great service too. For starters, my husband had the mussels and loved them, the broth was delicious. I had the poutine but it was heavily salted, too much for my liking. For dinner, I ordered the duck medium well and my husband had the lamb shank. The corn pudding with lima beans, rhubarb sauce and peppercorns was to die for! But my duck wasn't cooked well enough for me so I ended up trading with my husband and ate the lamb, which was flavorful and tender. For dessert, you can't go wrong with the goat cheese cheesecake. My husband had the creme brulee, which he said was best he's ever had, and he's very particular. Overall, we had a good anniversary dinner. We'll probably come again next time we're in Tucson. read more

Awesome place in downtown Tucson. The food is nice and fresh and the outside seating is great!

In trying to find a place downtown to meet some friends Maynard's popped up and I am so glad it did. This restaurant is located in what appears to be a converted train station also attached to the building is the museum. They have valet, but they also have a ton of convenient parking nearby. At first we were confused between the bistro/market and the actual more upscale looking restaurant... mostly because the bistro looks like it has AMAZING food in a casual environment. However, the restaurant was fantastic and has ambiance in comparison. We were a table of four and each tried something different - burger, filet, bistro steak and house special pasta. ALL of us were thrilled with our meals. I had also ordered the mixed green salad which was truly delicious - and I don't normally say that about salads. I also tried their house Sangria which is worth going back for. (they apparently switch from white wine to red wine on their Sangria at the start of fall) My favorite thing about the meal was the dessert. I went with the creme brulee which had this homemade cookie and berries with it. Not all creme brulee's are created equal and this one is way ahead of the pack in terms of what I have tasted over my lifetime. We would return for sure. The location was really cool, as well as the atmosphere, prices were reasonable, the food outstanding. While I can't get as excited about the service we had - I would say it was 'good'. Our server was very nice but he just, well, was quite inattentive and we had to continue asking for refills on our water and those that ordered iced-tea. For a restaurant this size service should be excellent, not good because the server was nice. read more

The new farmers markets on Saturday mornings had a great turnout! Decent amount of vendors with a nice variety of basic fruits and veggies. A few surprises were the goat cheeses and the salsa guy with tamarind apples! Also Borderlands Brewery was sampling their new amber and pricley pear wheat, very yummy! Definitely worth it to make it a new downtown ritual! And don't forget to grab some Maynards pastries on the wat ou! read more

We had an absolutely sublime brunch experience at Maynard's on a recent visit to Tucson. Fantastic ambience, excellent service, and amazing food. Oh, and the absolutely best bloody mary I've ever had in my life. This will be a mainstay in the rotation on future visits to Tucson. I can only imagine how beautiful their patio is on summer nights! read more

I can only really speak for the morning time frame but great staff- always greeted with a smile and I consistently leave feeling like family. The only thing keeping me from giving this place 5/5 is timeliness- its worth the wait but with the amount of employees the timeliness could definitely be improved upon. read more

FINALLY made it over to Maynard's this week - I've had their pizza to go, but hadn't gotten the chance to eat there yet. So, we went around 3:00, and the menu was limited to pizzas and salads, and the only place to sit was the bar. We had the Four Cheese pizza (great), and the Caesar salad (good format/freshness, but had WAAAYYYY too much dressing on it). Also, the Caesar dressing was not very good. Between that and the unbelievably rude hostess (who barked at us about the limited menu and seating options as soon as we entered) & bartender (who seriously rolled his eyes when we ordered 2 waters and an IPA, pending further perusal of the drink menu) it averaged out to 3 stars. After that, I opted not to order a drink from the bratty bartender & went to Che's afterward. Nice decor, though, and the pizza is incredible. read more

First, this review is for the market, not the dining room, and my order was to go. My advice is that if you love this place, do not place a to go order here. I've been eating here pretty regularly and have never tried to order take out until my most recent visit. One of the people in the group needed to get home quickly but we had been planning on Maynard's and figured we'd stick with it. I never considered that the market didn't do carryout and I certainly wasn't trying to be difficult. It was my mistake and I'm not trying to be a jerk about asking for a service that isn't offered, I really didn't know. I guess the market just seemed like a carryout friendly menu. Anyway, my issue is the way the lady behind the counter handled the situation. I could have handled a polite, we don't do carryout. However, she was really rude and clearly irritated. There was seriously no need for all of that. She went on about how the menu isn't intended for carryout and they don't have proper take out containers. Ok, I get that you don't do carryout. Really, I've brought home leftovers plenty of times in what I would consider to be very proper containers so it's not necessary to make up reasons why you're annoyed that I asked for carryout. Just tell me that it's not something you offer and I'll come back next time I can dine in. The vibe in this place is usually so fun; it was sad to be in there both ordering and listening to other people order. She was pretty short with the guy who ordered after us too. He was dining in but had some questions about the menu; possibly she was still irritated after my order. Not a good experience. We love it here so I'm guessing we'll be back. But lesson learned, dine in only. And if I see the same person behind the counter I'm heading across the street to Congress which is where we ended up that afternoon. read more

This is the first time I've been to this new building, since it's been built in downtown Tucson, the ambiance of the place was small and quaint and it definitely is a nice place to go for lunch. They give you bread and a garlic/herb infused butter, however - it would have been nice if they had warmed it up or toasted the bread, since the butter was cold and hard. For lunch, I had their market fish of the day, which was some sort of white fish, can't remember the name of it; it was cooked nicely but it could have been better with some sort of heat to it. However, their burgers looked fantastic and the fries as well. With the excellent service and pretty good food, I think I'd try it again. read more

Took husband to Maynard's on a spontaneous birthday dinner trip. Ended up ordering off of the happy hour menu. Steak tartare, mussels, and poutine. Each was $7 and more than enough for two people. Excellent food quality, excellent service! Will come back to try more of their happy hour menu!!! read more

Went to the "fine" dinning part of the establishment, the salad was the best part. Food was bland, but the server was great. Wouldn't try this place again especially for the price point. read more

Though the atmosphere, staff, and flavored were all positives, the price of the food was far above what we were served. Though I understand good food is worth paying for, Maynard's served us grilled salmon over toasted bread and charged $35 for it. Tucson has great restaurants and this one could be one of them with a little refinement and reconsideration of price. read more

I heard so many great things about this place and really was optimistic, but was seriously disappointed. I went during restaurant week and did the 3 course meal and it was just "ok". Not worth the 30 bucks they were charging. Some under cooked phillo dough mushroom wrap and mediocre trout. The service could have also been better. Not really diggin on overpriced food. read more

Maynards has the most unique combinations of flavors you will find in Tucson, that is for sure. I have yet to try something I don't love on their menu. I recommend going and just asking the waiter to order something for you - I guarantee you will love whatever it is. Dinner is slightly pricey, especially for Tucson, but it is totally worth it. read more

They have some of the best cocktails I have had in Tucson and the bartenders are knowledgeable and friendly. This is my new favorite spot to grab a seat at the bar after a long day. Half-priced steak tartare and pisco sours makes this place the best happy hour! Good wine list, quality spirits selection and tasty food! read more

I came to this restaurant and market twice over my stay in Tucson. The first time, I enjoyed their late night happy hour and DJ set. The snacks and drinks were great but my best experience was an impromptu reunion with old college classmates. We wanted to go somewhere relaxed but had friends coming in from Switzerland and France so we knew we needed good wine. We went to the Market and they had a fantastic selection of wines. We got a few great bottles and the best part is that they let you uncork and drink right there. I hope to come back and eat soon. Then I hope it's 5 stars! read more

The brunch at Maynard's is so delicious than I am short on words to describe how much we enjoyed it. The food was a ten plus and the service felt like an upscale trendy NYC restaurant. Bravo to bringing high quality service and food to Tucson. read more

We have come here for years, and mostly enjoyed it. Over the last year or so we've had to send back to the kitchen multiple times, usually a single entree. Tonight however, both my wife's halibut (still raw) and my NY strip ( medium well, asked for medium rare). After 20 plus min the replacements came, and the halibut was several small tails, and my smaller steak was medium at best. Not acceptable. The manger gave a glass of wine and a desert, but walked away while we were still talking to him. read more

I've been wanting to try the steak tartare here since I read about it awhile ago but I'm never in the area at dinner time. Well today I decided to just go for it at lunch and see if they would make it for me anyway. The chef kindly obliged and I'm so glad for that because it was fantastic! We followed up with the red velvet pancakes and soft shell crab benedict and every single thing was good. Many high end restaurants put ingredients that all sound "fancy" and good together into a dish but it ends up sounding better than it tastes, however everything here really blended well and made for a great overall taste experience. I am withholding the fifth star only because my iced tea went dry and that's a pet peeve of mine. Otherwise the service was decent and of course the food was exceptional. I am already craving the steak tartare again and I look forward to trying the dinner menu. read more

Maynard's is the best - And keeps getting better. I was in the redone market last week and ordered a amazing lunch...but it was the service that really makes this place shine. On my recent visit the tall blond ginger server Carson was so awesome. First he went out of his way to help recommend the best sandwich on the menus, a top notch az wine and provided absolutely outstanding service.... Attentive and responsive with out being overbearing. Maynard's is really the best downtown eatery! a+++++ read more

I got the loaded baked potato soup, and the Cesar Salad. It looked like they literally gutted a baked potato and put it in a bowl. It wasn't seasoned, it didn't taste good, and it wasn't soup. The salad had no dressing at all, and they used light romaine leaves. It was a terrible experience. read more

Filet and scallops were amazing! And the wine is to die for! Our server was fantastic!!! Best service we've had in a long time :)

We were IN LOVE with this cute little place. The service was great, and the food even better. We tried the beignets first and oh man, that Nutella whip served on the side was SO good. All in all we had a great experience. We're not in Tucson often but next time we are, we'll definitely be making another stop in. read more

Maynards was a nice discovery after spending the morning outdoors. The chicken curry sandwich was delicious and the apple pie turnover was generously filled with cinnamon apples. read more

I've seen complaints here about the price, but I felt like my steak and frites were fairly priced @ $15. for lunch. The steak was a good portion was very tasty and well cooked. I liked the onion and butter on it too: made it yummy and special (a nod by the chef that, even thought it was just steak, he/she were willing to make the effort). Now that I know they nailed the steak I will be back for the more adventurous items on the menu. The mussels were very fresh and tasty. The broth was subtle and delicious. I don't like it when the broth is too garlicky or salty--not a problem. I liked the dessert: a goat cheese cheesecake--sweet and fluffy. If they didn't make it there, it was close by at the hands of someone who knew what they were doing. I hate being served a Costco cheesecake that is not fresh and overly cold from recent thawing, and frankly you get that a lot in Tucson. The creme brulee was very tasty too: big portion with tangy blueberries and strawberries. Wait staff was very good. Smiled and were nice, but not phony. I like staff that are engaged in their work, but not too earnest or chatty--good job. The room was comfortable, cool (it was 106 outside) and clean. The table was sturdy (Tucson restaurants, why is this such a continual issue out there?) and the chairs substantial and cool looking. Why I can't give Maynard's a 4 or 5 stars rating yet: I think it's cheap of them not to offer bread with the mussels (I had to ask, granted it was nice bread!). The Bloody Mary tasted bad. It had a neato bit of asparagus, but it tasted like a Slim Jim and was pretty weak on the liquor side of the equation. It was bad enough to send back, but I chocked it down. I just won't put out $8 bucks for a cocktail here again. The 'frites sauce' is catsup: not special catsup either. Wine--yes red wine is supposed to be room temp. But that means about 65 degrees or so. I think it had maybe sat at the bar overnight and warmed a bit much? Serving Zin that warm gives it a harsh edge and a stale feel. Thank god I was having a steak with it. The choice of 'warm' wine might be the sommelier's style. Which is fine, but forget about me agreeing by buying more. I will go back and order something more challenging food wise. To be on the safe side, I will have a simpler cocktail and enjoy a beer with my food. read more

Great location, but the barista was so rude it warranted a review. Even though all I ordered was an Americano, I would still like a hello and a bit of class. The barista talked to me like I was a 5th grader and acted like it was a chore to wait on me. No hello upon entering, no thank you, no class. If this place thinks it's cool to have a pompous, pretentious barista, I certainly will not be back! read more

EXCELLENT. The fois gras poutine appetizer was delicious - not too gravy-y, a real treat. The tomato salad was fresh and refreshing. The steak was GREAT - perfectly cooked and seasoned. While the food would be enough of a draw, the ambiance at Maynards is absolutely delightful. A truly beautiful space. This restaurant would be a success anywhere! So glad that Tucson has this gem. read more

Maynard's Market and Kitchen have the same owners, are housed in the same building and have some menu overlap, but offer such different experiences I think it makes sense to review them separately. The Market has a stellar wine selection, a breakfast and lunch menu, shelves of groceries and dry goods. It can't be said that there is a lot for sale at Maynard's that you absolutely NEED but there are a lot of items (handmade soap, cutesy pet accessories) that you may well WANT and that makes it fun to browse around when you're waiting for food. Maynard's has a rep for being a tad pricey for the downtown Tucson folk, but I've found good prices can be found if you ask the staff, who I have always found extremely helpful, especially when it comes to wine selection. They know their stuff and will work to find a bottle that works for your budget and taste (mine is fairly inexpensive and dry, respectively). The other thing I love love love about Maynard's Market is their ready-to-eat, packaged-to-go, beer brined roasted chicken, basically a gourmet version of what you find in the deli section of a mainstream grocery store. They sell out daily, and I was thwarted the first few times I tried to pick one up in the evening. Then I wised up and realized if you just call ahead the kitchen will reserve one for you, and presto, there's your (amazingly tender, totally delicious) dinner! read more

We went to Maynard's after watching the play "Red" at the Arizona Theater Company. It was later in the afternoon on Sunday, and we came here with a group of friends who were also at the play. It seemed like a good idea since we all received coupons for a free dessert with entrée and it had been two years since my first visit to the restaurant. I remember that I had not been too impressed with the food I had that initial time, but it seemed like a good time to re-evaluate my initial impression. I started with Chef's choice of "side of the day". It was a very small mixed vegetable plate with the price of $7. I liked the flavor very much, but thought they could have offered a larger portion at that price. My main dish was Pork Shank, and it was super tender and tasty, and I would come back just for this dish. I also had a taste of the fish my friend had ordered. Maynards advertised their fish are delivered daily, but I did not like it very much. It was a little fishier than it should have been, and the portion size was tiny. For $35 market price, the portion was about half the size of my palm, and I have small hands. In addition, the rice risotto was not completely cooked. Originally, I wanted to order this dish, but I was happy that I chose the Pork Shank instead. I had the crème brulee for dessert. It looked nice and the size was nice, but the sugar on the top was over burned so I could taste more bitter flavor than I liked--not a fan of the burnt taste. My second dining experience with Maynards was not bad, and I actually liked the Pork Shank very much. The reason I only gave the A-OK rating was mainly for the price. I don't mind to pay a $$$ price for dinner, but I expect everything to be $$$ quality. I might come back for the Pork Shank though and hope they will keep this item on the menu. read more

Zero complains location and selection are awesome

Went here on Monday night. Ambiance is OK, pretty nice for an Amtrak station. The beer selection isn't good - but they have a few decent taps. Food is good, not spectacular. Oh, and it's expensive. Beer is $5-6 a pint, not terrible, though. Overall a decent time but not a landmark. read more
