The moment I walked in, I was greeted by not one, but TWO friendly smiles and "good mornings!" We had a quick conversation about my coffee preferences, and the sweet girl and gentleman behind the bar whipped up two breve cortados for me -- one Orange Cardamom and the other their seasonal Rose Chocolate. I noticed the roast was a little darker than what I normally prefer, but it smelled incredible. Then came the first sip... WOW. Such a beautifully balanced drink! The roast was smoky, rich, and chocolatey without being overpowering. Both drinks were great, but the Orange Cardamom was absolutely the winner for me. The citrus and spice worked perfectly with the espresso. EPIC CUP!!!!! Fantastic coffee, genuinely friendly service, and a place I would absolutely come back to.

I had such high hopes for this place. I guess I was bought in by all the hype. They really suck and I think it's a tragedy that the City of Tucson is giving them free rent to occupy the train station. Not that they didn't put a lot of money into fixing up the place and making it look nice. The owners clearly did their part of the job and made this place a very hip step back to an era in the 19th-century when fine dining and train travel were as standard then as retail villages and malls are today. Sadly the staff really drops the ball here. The servers do not know their stuff. It is clear that they are hired because they are slender, attractive-looking college kids. No one knows anything about the wine list, and neither do I. I can't make out anything on this list that sounds good. It's like they picked out wines based on how whimsical the name sounded. Having a wine bottle with words and phrases like "writer's block," "bastard," "velvet devil," "identity crisis," and "ball buster" on the label doesn't inspire confidence. It just tells me the product inside the bottle is crap and some marketing guys tried to make it sound funny or cool. Even if they had a bottle that I would actually pay restaurant money for, I could see that their staff hadn't the faintest clue how to properly serve wine. The food is nothing to write home about. It's kind of weird and flavorless. Like it tries too hard to be kitschy and trendy. Nothing creative and original. This is not fine dining. At their crummy level of service this doesn't even cut it for casual dining. Nothing to write home about in their market either. Not much of a selection and no bottles of wine that I can't find elsewhere around town for a few dollars less. If I want local products I can just as easily go to 4th Ave and choose from a much better selection. Folks, you did a good job making this place look nice, now assemble a staff in there that can make this a nice place to spend our money. Otherwise, free rent or no, your good hype will fade and we the diners of Tucson will quickly abandon you. read more

This is a review of the restaurant and market: The restaurant's atmosphere manages to be rustic and trendy at the same time. I love all the throwback stuff. Aside from that, the menu is overpriced for what you get. The staff lacks the kind of knowledge of food and wine they should have. The managers are laughable. You see them swarm around without a clue as to how to run a restaurant. My guess is their criteria for hiring the know-nothing waitstaff was either to find really cool-looking slender young people regardless of experience or knowledge or they wanted to make sure to hire staff with less knowledge than themselves, which I can assure you is not much. The wine list is as boring as one could imagine. A good wine bar is supposed to introduce you to new flavors and acquaint you with the kinds of wines you will fall in love with. It is obvious they don't have a wine expert and I think the managers aren't even wine drinkers. Really really boring, horrible wine list. Why spend 10 bucks on a glass of something I can find at Fry's for 10 bucks a bottle? As for the market. I think they are trying to compete with Rum Runner and the 4th Ave Co-Op. The store has some neat local things, but very few. If I want locally-raised honey, I can get it there, but I can also get it at Co-Op along with a thousand other things I need. Maynard's Market has about maybe 30 or so total items in their inventory. They also have about 30 or 40 wines... all over priced with nothing that stands out or couldn't be found at a local wine or grocery store. This place is not worth the price or the hassle to park downtown. Their poor service and attitude shows they're leaning on all their good initial publicity and spill-over business from the Hotel Congress. read more

Nice atmosphere. Insanely over priced food that's not even good. And HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE service. I went with my girlfriend and another couple. My girlfriend and I got there first and decided to have a drink at the bar while we waited for friends. I ordered one of their specialty drinks and the bartender brought it to me with a bill, I didn't look at the bill and just put my credit card in the check presenter. He ran my card and brought it back. About 5 minutes later he came and said that I "owed him another dollar" because he charged me wrong. What? Are you kidding me? You F'ed up so you're actually gonna come ask me for a dollar instead of telling your manager and getting it taken care of, or forgetting about it altogether? Not that I cared about the dollar, but that's just bad customer service. I wish I could say at dinner things got better, but unfortunately they didn't at all. I ordered a steak medium rare, it came out medium well and didn't even have a side or garnish. It was literally a piece of meat on a white plate and nothing more. I really wish this place was better because downtown could use more destinations for people to go. Unfortunately I guess downtown and I will both have to wait for someone to come in who actually knows what they're doing. read more

Ordered the Beer Brined Chicken and my girlfriend had the pork saltimbocca. My chicken was cooked perfectly and had a small portion of a mustard sauce on the side that was delicious (or maybe it was the only thing on the plate that had any flavor). That is all that was good with either of our meals. Everything else on my plate (potatoes, red cabbage and figs??) was oily and bland. I left much of it untouched and left still hungry. Her pork was cooked fine (a little over done but not aggravatingly so), but was extremely gamy. The tomato and spinach were bland and mushy. From the minute we told our server that we were not consuming alcohol that night, we were treated like second class customers. He took our order and returned when we were done with the check (food runners brought us our plates). The table next to us (same waiter) ordered a bottle of wine, so of course were given excellent service. He offered to have the chef come to their table and discuss the menu with them. This place was very snooty and I never plan on returning. read more

I've eaten at Maynards 5-6 times now. As far as I'm concerned the food is absurdly overpriced and only once out of those visits would rate it as stellar. The rest of my visits I left with an empty pocket book and an utterly mediocre meal. In addition I find the wait staff stiff and stuck up. Especially the Bartender the other night when I went in not just stuck up but unattentive. I'm easy going but when I go out I spend a lot of money and I expect service and food to be in keeping with the money I spend. I don't like stuck up snobbish wait staff with a better then thou attitude if I'm not wearing a Rolex or name brand clothing. And thats what it feels like when I go there. Instant judgement, ITS TUCSON People Not Downtown Manhattan although I've had nicer friendlier wait staff there than at Maynards. and by the way, their wine list SUCKS. read more

We learned of this restaurant when searching for a place to eat dinner, but we decided to drop in for Sunday brunch. The French influence on the cuisine is apparent, from the French onion soup (very good), to the cream based sauce on the cast iron skillet eggs (tasty and very, very rich), to the use of creme fraiche served with the beignets (the creme was the star, the beignets themselves a touch doughy if you're going to cast a critical eye). And of course, they served cafe au lait. All in all, we were very happy with our meal. The restaurant is a nice example of how downtown Tucson is being revived into a somewhat trendy place with good restaurants. If you go, consider a table outside by the tracks. It's a great way to enjoy Arizona's lovely winter weather or perhaps a balmy summer evening. read more
