I had a pleasant stay at Canyon Cafe Resort. I stayed there for an international conference for 5 days. Here is some details about the resort. 1- The hotel agents are really polite and nice 2- Nice restaurant with nice view and high quality service and wonderful food 3- My room was clean with nice view of water fall 4- The resort is so quiet and you can enjoy of the swimming pool and have fun. Came on Sunday for the Blues, Brews & BBQ brunch that happens from 11-2pm. It is a bit pricey at about $70 pp after tax but worth it for the food quality! Everything we had was delicious. There are 4 sections : seafood, breakfast, bbq, and desserts. I loved the scallops served on a half shell and their grilled vegetables were so amazing! I invited a group of 6 to do the Blues Brunch this past Sunday and it was great. I always pace myself and snack the whole 3 hours. My favorite things were the Eggs Benedict, mussels and salmon from the grill. Can't wait to come back again. The food at the pool was just ok again. The fish tacos were a bit plain. I ordered the ancient grain bowl with fish but they added chicken. It was just ok. The Tropical Guava drink was really good. Lavender Splash and Strawberry Ranch water was just ok. Berry Margarita was awful. Alta tastes like bad alcohol. Prickly Pear was good. We also ordered drinks at the Lobby Bar. I really like the Pom and FLowers. We went for the Sunday brunch. The servers were wonderful. The atmosphere is great. There was no band as advertised. There is a lot of food out a wide variety of choices but the items outside on the grill were very overcooked. I will say my granddaughter tried muscles for the first time and actually love them. I personally like the little crab crackers. The shrimp bar was totally frozen. You had to wait for them to thaw out to eat. There wasn't any sushi this weekend. The desserts were excellent, and there is a wide variety of meats and veggies on the grill, but again overcooked. Two ppl from our group were last minute no-show and we were very embarrassed. But they were very nice about it. As for their food, they were delicious! Perfect selection of sandwiches and sweets! There were a lot we took some home!!! So why the 4 stars? Because on their website, the holiday tea is advertised as $45 but when we got to the hotel, the sign said $65. When we mentioned it, the manager just said "yeah, it looks like we still have the old information". Ok.....then maybe you should fix it? Our past experience with food and service was always great. However, the quality of both, food and service have greatly diminished. We brought family for the ambiance and the quality. My boyfriend and I went to this brunch today and it was overall very enjoyable. One thing to consider, if you're a vegetarian it makes things a bit harder because nothing is labeled. We had to ask (he is a vegetarian, I am not) and while the chefs were friendly and helpful, it would be more efficient if the dishes had labels on them with allergen/special diet info on them. There also wasn't the biggest selection of vegetarian dishes, but what there was tasted very good. There is a made to order omelette station which is a nice touch. The desserts were a standout! I hope they have the strawberry peanut butter tres leches cake again. Overall we would go again for a special occasion. The keg of the Dragoon pilsner died, but there was plenty of other brews to be had. The BBQ was over cooked, but good eating. I judge competition BBQ so it's a crazy standard. The prime rib was a beautiful color for medium rare and it was well prepared. The shrimp was good. The sushi rolls had too much rice and too little of fish. I have been attending this buffet for over the last ten years when I visit town. Good things are the ambiance, the music, the scenery, and the variety of food options are hard to beat. World class even. However over the last two years things have been a little inconsistent in terms of the food quality and preparation. I first noticed that the quality of what's being served, although the choices are vast (meat and veg) has dropped off. I think switched distributors or buying lower grade supplies. What struck me most recently is that the food didn't seem grilled enough. No matter what I chose, it seemed underdone. For the price point not a good feeling. Also, in particular, the mashed potatoes were clumpy and chunky. They always used to be creamy and had a good but not overwhelming buttery taste. Not sure if I would hurry back. I let someone know in a more senior position about my concerns but not sure it will go anywhere. Hence this review. All that said, our wait staff was amazing. And the blues. Exceptional! This is now my number one brunch spot in Tucson, only the 2nd time I've gone to brunch in Tucson but that's neither here nor there lol... Let's talk about the food! Upon entering Canyon Cafe I walked pass a dessert table to get to the hostess...can I grab a plate while you direct me to my party??? The patio was littered with seating and my group was nestled in a corner. There was a little section where I'll say the "band" was set up but it was really just a guy with a guitar and a woman playing a drum but his voice was amazing, so different but I didn't catch their name. They let guest come up and jam with them as well. There was a hug BBQ pit set up and he had everything from grilled vegetables to pork belly to ribs (delicious!!), pulled pork was delectable and I didn't even have a bun. The Mac and cheese was scrumptious and so cheesy, the mashed potatoes salivating...I can go on. The dessert was hit or miss, the cookies were good, just so much variety. I appreciate the choices. Lastly, Brandon, our server was everything! I'll go back and request him. He was so attentive, nice and hilarious. We walked the property after our meal and he kept our to go boxes behind the bar as we were not guest and had only come for brunch. Chef Ken Harvey and his team are killing it with the Sunday Blues Brews and BBQ brunch. This is my absolute favorite was to spend any Sunday or special occasion! I have been to this brunch over 15 times and loved everytime! FOOD: The indoor/outdoor buffet set up has a plethora of options. I typically skip the breakfast options, and start with the fresh seafood, salads, cheese and pickled things. Then onto the real deal, the outdoor BBQ. I love the grilled pineapple, grilled veggies (omg, the mushrooms), grilled meats (I am not a big meat eater but like to taste a few things and like the salmon), the cornbread and the mac and cheese. Mac & Cheese is my guilty pleasure, but its soo worth it here. Once they didn't offer the mac & cheese, which initially I was devastated, but with so many great options, it was just fine. Then, if you have room for dessert, which is every changing, I suggest the creme brule and key lime pie tarts. Bacon and drizzled fondue chocolate is a pretty good combo too! DRINKS: You can get one bloody mary to start, which I recommend. Brunch comes with bottomless mimosas (a trick is so just order champagne and add a "shot" of the fresh juices). They also offer Dragoon IPA and typically another Dragoon seasonal. AMBIANCE: I love the serene mountain views, pool view and the music from the blues band. George Howard used to play, who was great, and now its a guy and girl who I unfortunately don't know their names, but they are EXCELLENT. I had visited the Sunday brunch here at the Loews Ventana Canyon Resort years before. And I wanted to experience it again. Hey, it was my birthday month and someone gave me a gift certificate! So I treated the dining trio and used up the whole certificate. The quality and variety of food is well worth the price we paid. Sometimes, when you eat out, you get some eats. Sometimes you get an experience-a positive one. This brunch fell under the latter category. We dined on both inside and outdoor items: shrimp (Gary called them the best ever), mussels, breakfast foods, cheeses, omlettes to order, sushi, breads and crackers, grilled vegetables, BBQ ribs, carved meats, soups, salsas, grlled salmon hotdogs wrapped in bacon and chicken, fresh cornbread and more in a grillin' setting outside, next to a few blues musicians. I found little shot glasses with liquid watermelon and other exotic fruit shots. I enjoyed superb quality lox (smoke salmon) on bagel. Near the entrance, we dined on a large variety of desserts. We took it in slow and savored the variety of flavors. Being an eclectic eater, I probably tried nearly all of the entrees (a taste here, a taste there). To top it off, we had options of coffee, mimosas (the naughty type) or juices, if alcohol didn't appeal. There's something for every taste in this buffet! It is truly a great value for quality food, in a delightful ambiance. We found the young waitstaff pleasant and eager to help. TIP: You can express a preference, if you want a booth or a table near a window. I am writing this review for the Blues, Brews, and BBQ Sunday brunch at Canyon Cafe. What a disappointment!! The only reason I am giving 2 stars is because the resort was beautiful. I brought my husband to thank him for all of his help while I was in grad school expecting it to be amazing. Sadly the caliber of the food was similar to what would be found at Golden Corral. The food LOOKED very good, but looks were deceiving. The BBQ was all cold, the oysters were dried out and gummy, the sushi was shriveled and gross, the charcuterie meat was the quality of lunch meat. The best part was the dessert and even that was mediocre. On top of all this the blues did not even start until 1:30, our reservation was at noon. To be fair it rained the day we went so I am not sure if they normally do the BBQ outside and it turns out better. For almost $50/head I certainly expected a much better experience! read more

Mum and I celebrated our Birthday's recently at the Blues, Brews and BBQ Sunday brunch. Fantastic as always. Our last visit was during the Christmas holidays. Mom just turned 88 (me, 63) and this was her (our) place of choice to celebrate once again. We have been going here for many years. Our servers Monica and Aliaa (?) were fantastic. Kind and courteous, very attentive but not overwhelming. They ensured our every need was taken care of, and took the time to converse and seemed to enjoy the time as much as we did. As usual the selction of food was wonderful. We always love the many breakfast selections, the omelet bar, and of course the outside BBQ area. The salmon was great, and I loved the grilled vegetables, especially the asparagus. Desserts are amazing, as well as the selections of fruits, cheeses, breads, etc. You just can't go wrong with all the many selections. They also presented Mum with a wonderful Birthday dessert tray. The view is beautiful as you look at the mountains and the sous chefs picking fresh herbs from their own garden. Why only three stars? The service was terrible. While I was graciously welcomed by the hostess, it ended there. My server was inattentive and incredibly slow especially since the restaurant was not busy. She had three tables including mine. Their Sunday Blues, Brews, and BBQ brunch is truly one of a kind. The food presentation is incredible. Outside they have large grills cooking every kind of meat, roasting vegetables, and a variety of sides. Inside, they have endless breakfast, seafood, salad (8 different types of salad!), and dessert options. Even the pickiest eater will find something to enjoy on this buffet. The reason this review is not getting 5 stars in the service. I have worked for a restaurant in a Loews hotel and I know the level of service demanded of their employees. This experience fell very short. The server that approached our table never introduced herself, just immediately asked if we wanted mimosas. That was it. No question on if this was our first time at the brunch or if we had any questions. Just poured mimosas and walked away. This was our first time, and while granted it is a buffet and pretty self explanatory, it would have been nice to have someone welcome us and explain the offerings. We didn't even know a bloody mary was included until another friend joined our party later in the day. The other thing I found odd was that my table was getting pre-mixed mimosas, while we saw several tables around us having champagne poured directly from the bottle, but again nothing was explained to us. Beautiful hotel in an awesome location. We ate here for a Father's Day brunch. We've eaten here numerous times in recent years and always had such a wonderful experience. Unfortunately, this past dining experience was horrible. The overall taste of the food was not good and there didn't seem to be as plentiful of selection. The wait staff seemed unkempt and very inattentive. We had to ask numerous times for refills on beverages and barely saw her. There was food and trash all over the floors..... just not a good dining experience. For the money we spent we expected a much better meal. As a vegetarian (pescatarian) I can attest that there is tons of food for my brood, even despite the "barbecue" cuisine! It includes salmon, grilled vegetarbles and grilled fruit (pineapple & watermelon!). Also, they have something I've never seen anywhere - a 3-flavor bloody mary bar! Service here is really quite slow. This is my third year coming here for a business meeting, and my experience has been the same each time. We got to the hotel at around 11 and sat down for lunch. There were four of us eating on the outside dining area. There were some other tables filled with some of my co-workers, but by no means were they full or the staff over worked. We sat for about 3-4 minutes before being approached. We ordered our drinks, which took another 5-6 minutes. When the drink server brought the drinks, we wanted to order food because things were not progressing in a timely manner. The drink guy said he couldn't take our order because he was just the drink guy. What? You don't have a pen and paper to write down our order and give to whomever has the authority to place the order? Not cool. Eventually our "server" came and took our order. It took another 30 minutes for the food to come out. Although it wasn't spectacular, it wasn't bad and was filling. For the third year in a row, I was disappointed with this place. But, there isn't any other option so you're pretty much at their disposal. I don't understand how they can be so understaffed when they know there is a large group coming in to dine. read more

From what I can tell - this is THE place to come for brunch. As a lunch spot, it's pretty solid. The brussels sprouts were fantastic. However - it's May, so to have the winter menu still going seemed odd. The menu was pretty limited but offered just about something for everyone (especially since they'll let you order off the Bill's Grill menu too if you ask). Every time we come here for brunch or breakfast we have the most excellent service whether it's crazy busy or not. We usually get Debbie. She has been a familiar face for many years. She is so sweet and truly goes above and beyond for her dining guests. One of the last times we had brunch there it was so insanely busy that there was just no more tables inside or outside. We also were unprepared and did not have reservations! She went out of her way to see if she could have them make an exception and sat us in the bar area and made us a makeshift area that wasn't a part of the regular seating area at all. We have always had nothing but exceptional service from her as well as the other staff at this restaurant. This buffet not only rivals the top buffets in Vegas, my partner and I both agree that it tops them! We have been to bellagio, cosmopolitan, Caesars, and Wynn (yes, those are the best in Vegas). Here's why: -Excellent service -Unlimited mimosas/champagne (Bloody Mary bar included but unsure if it's unlimited or just 1 included) -Unlimited Dragoon beer -Gorgeous mountain surroundings -Excellent quality food that is consistent and fresh -$42/person sounds steep but is on par with Vegas buffets, which this one surpasses Best tastes: RIBS, tequila cured salmon (raw, at the table with the lox), RIBS, grilled asparagus, Caribbean flavored shrimp, chocolate covered strawberries, and did I mention RIBS! We dined at Canyon Cafe after a brisk morning hike and magical night at the peaceful Loews Ventana Canyon resort in late December 2011. We were greeted and sat at a table with incredible views of the canyon rising up behind the pool area... then we waited, and waited, and waited for a server. Once the server arrived we place our order and proceeded to wait 10 minutes for coffee and juice, plus another 30 minutes for our breakfast. (*If you are a wimp, you may want to have them go light on the chorizo, but we love it!) My Steel Cut Oatmeal Pancakes with Almonds, Mint and Arizona Honey were AMAZING - once I asked the server for the fresh Mint and Arizona Honey that should have been served with them per the menu. The buffet is priced extremely well and the options are wonderful. The lighter fare options all offer quality foods. The salmon plate is my favorite - smoked salmon, jalepenos, hard boiled egg, capers, onion, cream cheese. Sunday brunch is excellent with mesquite wood cooking grill, salmon, chicken and traditional bbq fixings. Excellent entertainment. The staff is the reason the Canyon Cafe excels. We look forward to our time in Tucson specifically because of the wonderful smiles and pleasantness that we have found to be so great!
