My family was excited to dine at this newest creation from the Flores family, the owners of El Charro. This eatery is located in the space vacated by Commoner and Co. The seating is much more comfortable than it was under its predecessor. The food and service were first rate. Two of us had the salmon, which was excellent. Others in our party had the GOAT pizzeta and a Jules burger. Everyone was happy with the food, which was not overpriced. The only hiccup came when we presented our El Charro gift cards as payment. We had been told by El Charro employees that these gift cards would work at The Hills, which is located across the street from the El Charro on Kolb and Sunrise. Much to our dismay and upset, our server as well as the GM informed us that we had been misled. I expressed in no uncertain terms my displeasure. The owner Sasha Flores soon appeared at our table and graciously diffused the situation. She couldn't have been nicer. We left happy. I would highly recommend the HIlls, but DON"T bother bringing your El Charro gift cards. read more

I love this place. Tucson has been a place for me that definitely is overrated in food, but every few weeks I'll find something that is tremendous, and makes me really see what could've been. The Hills is a great example. First off, this place was PACKED, and to be honest, a tad bit cramped, but I did go for dinner. It was VERY loud and that might be a turnoff for some. Be forewarned. I almost don't want to share this, but my honor as a Yelp Elite requires it. But they have outdoor patio seating. Don't do this in the summer, at least while the sun is up, but outside of that, request it with the host team. It's lovely and comfortable and service doesn't lack there. That's what I did, I peeped the patio while being annoyed with the tad cramped interior and I am so glad I did. They were more than happy to seat me out there. And there wasn't anyone else there so it functionally was like a private experience. Let me just say my server was like 19 and it was his first job and he was amazing. At no point did I feel neglected. The food is what you're here for yes? Well overall it was very good. I had a bit of an issue with the steak, it was cooked exceedingly well, although they don't let you order it the standard ways. I forget what they give as options. But I interpreted it as burnt or properly cooked. I ordered, thankfully the non-burnt sounding option, and it came out properly cooked at medium rare. Only problem was the steak lacked any flavor. Not too happy about that. But the Chimichurri was amazing and they gave me a lot of that. So it worked. The Charcuterie was pretty amazing. Everything was high quality and tasty. Even the bread. The sweet potato fries were a tad soggy, but flavorful and the cheese on top was nice. I appreciated the vision, but it could've been cooked a tad bit more. Now for my drink, I had the "Screw the Diet" which wasn't a bad drink, but it was too coffee forward with the espresso, and the Skrewball, which is an amazing peanut butter whiskey by the way, was barely present. Just advertise this as a coffee cocktail. It works as that. Make something else the Skrewball can shine in. The banana pudding was very very good. Light, full flavored and memorable. And I'm not a big bannna pudding fan. Overall this place is amazing. I did meet the resturant manager and expressed my issues with the drink and the lack of salt on the steak. He said they are working on it. He was a good man. Please try this place though. It's worth the drive to the far east side. I'll be moving closer to here soon so I'll be trying this again. I love this almost as much as I do Teaspoon. Like I said in the beginning, Tucson isn't the food city some clamor it to be, but then there's places like The Hills that give it life. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by the hills considering I'm not a fan of their sister restaurant the Monica. My friend and I came for happy hour appetizers and mocktails. We made sure to make a reservation and were seated immediately. Service was great we never felt rushed and our waitress provided great clarification on items and drinks We ordered the Brussels sprouts and whipped feta and two mocktails. The whipped feta.. where do I start? It was the star of the show I'm such a big fan I tried to recreate it at home. The salty/ herb flavor of the feta and the honey and crunch from the pepitas it was a culinary masterpiece. The bread was amazing and they gave you enough to actually finish off the feta. The Brussels sprouts had amazing flavor, soft inside and crispy outside. The mocktails weren't the greatest so i would've liked to see more effort on that area. We decided to give this new place a try since we live nearby. It was Mother's Day and, surprisingly, it wasn't too busy. The host greeted us warmly and seated us at a high-top table facing the bar. She also mentioned that mothers would receive a free pastry and a flower for Mother's Day, but later when I asked about it, they told me they had already run out, a bit of a bummer... Our waiter was attentive, took our orders promptly, and made good recommendations. However, the wait for the food was about 32 minutes even though the restaurant wasn't busy. At one point, our waiter came by and said he was going to check on our food, which was appreciated because we were definitely getting hungry by then. We ordered the Catalina Chicken and the Far East Noodle Bowl with teriyaki chicken. Both dishes were flavorful, well cooked, and very enjoyable. I also ordered the Tamarindo Cooler, but unfortunately it was extremely sweet and tasted artificial. I could barely drink half of it, so I think the recipe could use some improvement. Another downside was the number of flies around our table and food. The restaurant keeps the patio windows open into the bar area, which may be contributing to the issue. This was our first time dining here and everything was great from start to finish. The atmosphere is welcoming and cozy. We didn't make a reservation, but they got us a table right away. We were kindly greeted by our server, Jose, who had our drinks to us within minutes. We ordered the whipped feta & honey and it was so flavorful and delicious. He got the yogurt bowl and I had the goddess salad with salmon. Both were perfectly portioned, balanced, and very flavorful. Came on a whim here and really appreciate the atmosphere. They have a nice patio that is dog friendly outside. The inside is just a chill and bright environment. The staff was very friendly. I ordered the whipped feta and honey sharable which tasted amazing. Honestly, I could have just gotten this to eat cause it tasted so good and was way larger than I anticipated. I also got their el tour bowl (yogurt with fruit). It was good too, but the whipped feta just hit different. I also got a ranch water which was made well. This has quickly become my go-to recommendation whenever friends or family visit from out of town -- and honestly, it's the first place I suggest when anyone asks me for the best new spots in Tucson. The vibe is warm and inviting, similar to the Monica but with a cozy, family-restaurant feel. The staff makes you feel welcome the moment you walk through the door -- consistently friendly every single time. The food is a straight 10/10. My personal favorites are the steak and frites, the prickly pear BBQ wings, and the freebird chicken and fries. Last Friday & today came back for their Friday only fish & chips" two large pieces of tender Walleye lightly breaded served on bed of fries with Cole slaw & their tartar sauce. The breading on the fish is very light which for me adds to the enjoyment of the large portions of tender walleye .Both times with fish consistently good that's why I returned . Trust me it's a winner & could even be split to try something else . The menu includes salads , sandwiches , pasta , steak , burgers , personal pizzas & more . Loads of drinks with Wednesdays half off bottles of wine . The former commoner space has been totally renovated with a cool vibe w old stereo tv console as the entry station along with old porcelain gas store set up with the hills merch . There's a private brick dining room in back east side . Great Mountain View's from the n dining room area , bar pub area including tall passed seating & stool by bar , with full long porch set up with tables even a outdoor sofa area with a couple rocking chairs all on west side . Closer to 4.5 stars We had just run Sabino Canyon and were looking for a late (7:30p) casual dinner. With The Hills open until 9p it was a match, albeit with some big shoes to fill ala the beloved Commoner. We started with the Brussels Sprouts and commended the chef on the novel far eastern twist, but the soy sauce was too much and likely dampened any crispness. She got the Impala burger and I got the sausage n 'shroom pizza. For those familiar with The Monica, their pizzas are virtual twins - which is a good thing - excellent crust/dough and "Monica" paper underneath as a sweet nod to the sister venue. My lone complaint about the pizza was that both end pieces of the oval were basically void of any toppings... something that should have been resolved the previous two weeks during their soft opening. The Impala burger was terrific but we would get it next time with the sugary bbq sauce on the side. We loved the 70/30 beef/mushroom blend of the patty too. We also tried the Tamarindo Cooler but I customized it (based on other's criticizing its overly sweetness) with "very light" agave syrup and no ice. They nailed the tweaks but... we could barely taste tamarind, i.e., it was nothing like the delicious taste of a southside agua fresca, and not worth $8.50. Service by Santi was very gracious. And parking is easy. We like that they maintained all of the same indoor and outdoor seating layout as the Commoner, and we opted for the quieter (and less air conditioned) patio on this beautiful May evening. We will be looking fwd to trying some more apps and dessert! Note: the happy hour "menu" is buried at the very bottom of the main menu, in tiny print (see my magnified photo) but the essence is: M-F, 2-6p with -$3 off nearly all drinks... that's how you do it! read more

Everything was delicious! The food, the service, the atmosphere, everything is so well curated. I love Eggs Benedict so I try it pretty much everywhere. This one has a hint of rosemary, it's subtle, rosemary can be overpowering, but they got it right here. The sauce is also light not heavy and thick. It comes on a fluffy foccocia with spinach, it's luscious and flavor filled. My husband had the chicken and croffles. The croffle has cinnamon sugar and the chicken was crispy, there's a hint of hot honey or spice in there with the billionaire bacon, it's very good! My daughter had the berry tart croissant which was also delicious. Definitely give this spot a try, the menu is great, we might have to come back and try more before we leave! read more

I can't believe what a great job they are doing while still in the soft opening phase. Seriously, wow! Best ahi tuna nachos ever! Wonderful margaritas, spicy fried chicken sandwich, the GOAT pizzetta, all of it spot on. They could have brought our appetizer out more quickly but that will surely work itself out soon. The space is as nice as it was before, not a fan of the new barstools though- SO thrilled to have them in the neighborhood! This place is 3 minutes from my house so looking for a fast place to regularly run to get good food. I looked up the menu and got pretty excited as I love breakfast foods. My first attempt i was starving and I called and they told me graduation was taking place and they were packed. Unable to fulfill my pickup order. 2nd time I called in order picked up food, got home was a Lil disappointed by the amount of noodles in the Catalina chicken dish. I split with my husband and we eat got one fork full of noodles. It had 3 pieces of chicken in the dish. I still have 1 left over piece of chicken with nothing to eat it with. The food was yummy but I don't think I've ever had to much chicken and not enough noodles. I also ordered the meat pizza, It was really good until I started tasting a bitter after taste. I flipped over the pizza and it was very burnt on most of the bottom. I don't mind some burnt but this bottom was very burnt. After I looked in mirror and I looked like i was kicking ashtrays. All my teeth were caked in black. Anyways I did enjoy the food and will try it again. I know this place is new im happy that it's dog friendly. I will bring my Lil dpg to the patio in the future. This restaurant just opened a couple of weeks ago. Sister restaurant of La Monica and El charro. They are open for breakfast lunch and dinner and have nice indoor and outdoor seating. It is very nicely decorated with a big bar area. We came for dinner and I recommend making a reservation. Very friendly staff from the hostess to the server. I was originally going to get a burger but turns out the patties consist of 70 % beef and 30 % shiitake mushrooms. Since I am not that adventurous I ordered their Tucson beefsteak dip. A very good combo of steak ( which was sliced not shaved as indicated in the menu) grilled onions and horseradish mayo along with provolone. The au jus is truly one of the best I ever had. My partner got a steak frites which was tasty. What I didn't like is that the fries were served room temperature and since it was pretty cold in the restaurant they were completely petrified within seconds. read more

Went on a Friday night a few weeks ago. They have a fish fry special serving walleye. The fish was light and flaky. Batter crisp and well seasoned. I'm from Wisconsin, the fish fry capital of the world, and I have to say the Hills fish fry was one of the best I've ever had. read more

Great service with the new staff. They've been open about two weeks. We had a variety of different meals, including the Asian noodle dish with chicken and with salmon the burger with the fries and the cedar smoked salmon. We would recommend it. A welcome addition to the neighborhood is what I have to say about The Hills. We happened by and had brunch at their soft opening. The avocado toast was presented nicely on a wood board. O had a basic bacon and eggs with Barrio bread sourdough toast and it hit the spot after a nice hike over at Sabino. The coffee was really good and the decor is fun and relaxed. Some Linda Rondstadt photos graced the walls and why not , she's a Tucson treasure. The prices were quite fair and the service was attentive. I have a really good feeling about this place. I wish I had some photos so you'll just have to go and see the cool vintage TV set at the entry way and the rocking chairs out front. Can't wait to try dinner there. read more

My husband and I were so excited when The Hills opened, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. We stopped in on a Monday evening and had a fantastic experience from start to finish. We started with the whipped feta and honey appetizer, which was delicious. The bread served with it was incredible and honestly gave us a hint that their pizza must be amazing. For our entrees, I ordered the Catalina Chicken and my husband had the Far East Noodle Bowl. Neither dish disappointed. My husband wasn't initially craving the noodle bowl, but ended up being so glad he ordered it--it was unique, flavorful, and something different from the usual restaurant fare. We also enjoyed a couple of cocktails (I opted for a mocktail), and both were excellent. The drink menu alone is worth a visit. The ambiance is relaxed, welcoming, and thoughtfully designed. It's a super cute space that feels comfortable whether you're there for dinner or just stopping in for drinks with friends. We'll definitely be back and would happily come just for cocktails and appetizers next time. read more

We had a reservation for 4 people at 1700 about a week ago. We showed up at 1650 the host told us that we were early and had to wait! I had the Canyon bowl with chicken. I know it's a new restaurant but my chicken was tough and dry. I don't know why the kitchen let the dish go out when it was so obvious. I let the wait staff know but her answer was to bring a sauce. It didn't help. The table next to us also complained to the wait staff- it was the chicken for a ceasar salad- also complaining of it being tasteless and dry. The manager was terrific, she saw the dish and took it off the bill. I don't think I will be returning anytime soon. read more

Recently opened, terribly disappointing. The space is more or less unchanged from Commoner. Poorly laid out and uncomfortable. The food was poorly prepared and lacked flavor. The chicken in both entrees was dry and inedible. Restaurant 101 : remove the tendons and brine the chicken. Even the table next to our party complained about their food. I realize they are just getting started and will give it another try in a few months. On the plus side the manager noticed we hardly touched our meals and compensated our party by removing them from the check. She was gracious and understanding. read more

We realize The Hills is a new restaurant and they still have a lot of kinks to figure out. We attempted to make a reservation on the Saturday evening before Memorial Day and they were booked. We waited and made a reservation for the following Wednesday at 5:45. When we arrived we were told we would have to wait for a table for 30minutes, or be seated at a high top in the bar. We said we would do that. We found the hi-top table to be way too high for the low seats. We felt like toddlers sitting at a table for adults. Our server, Chloe,was sweet and attentive. She said we were not the first to comment on the hi-top tables. The menu was a bit underwhelming and the food was "just okay". The fries arrived lukewarm as it took awhile for the food to arrive to our table. Hopefully, it will improve with changes made going forward. read more

This is a new restaurant opening up as, hopefully, a local, comfortable spot near us. we went for dinner for mother's day. My wife had the Spicey Chicken Sandwich and a glass of Chardonnay. I have the Freebird Chicken & Fries and an IPA. Positives were (i) good ambiance, (ii) manageable noise level, (iii) decent service, (iv) good food (basically, elevated bar food), (v) reasonable price (just under $50 before tax and tip), (vI) our server had a trainee shadowing her, a very good thing to do (and overall, the waitstaff and hostess staff were very young, eager and friendly, plus they looked sharp - white shirts/blouses with black pants), (vii) we were not given big glasses of water to start or asked if we wanted water (which is like gold in the Arizona desert and mostly goes to waste when served to diners), and (viii) 100% unexpectedly, 25% discount on food (not drinks) because it is in a "soft opening" phase. That was really nice as a gesture (we don't care about the financial impact). No real negatives and we'd happily go back again. read more

Had a late lunch at the bar. I had the Impala Burger. i really enjoy that they take a responsible and unique approach to the house blended burger by adding Shitake Mushrooms in. The Billionaire bacon was amazing and paired well with the sauce. The Charro Margarita was perfectly balanced. The bar staff was very friendly and attentive.
