I have been coming to Lavernas for as long as I've lived in Tucson. The staff is loyal and most have working there for a long time. The coffee is old school the decor is a yucky yellow. The food is old school and I love me some biscuits and gravy, chicken fried steak and eggs. The pancakes are huge. It's no frills, local Laverna is still around and it kind of like going to my grandmas house for breakfast. I love it!!!! I always forget to take more pictures of the food, if you want a balanced diet this is not your place. If you want good food the is not on the color wheel this is the place. I wouldn't do it everyday but once in a while it's pretty darn good. read more

Fantastic pancakes! That is definitely their specialty. Also tried the eggs benedict which was also good. Coffee was fine. Only complaint was the gravy. It was thick and pasty and no sausage, and no flavor. I wish I could go back in the kitchen and give them some hints on the gravy! read more

This restaurant is your typical greasy spoon with large portions and okay food. The prices were a little steep for the quality. The inside does not have any windows in the main dining and a small window on the north side dining area. The food came out very quickly for 6 (2 adults/4 kids). The burro had hard pieces of shredded cheese and the salsa tasted a little off (vinegary) and the garnish: bell peppers and lettuce tasted off. The omelette had a melted slice of kraft cheese on top. The biscuits and gravy were huge and tasted decent. The sweet tea was good. The red menudo needed a little more flavor, but was tasty overall. They automatically added a 20% tip. I wish I had known about this place years ago. This past week, my brother-in-law turned me onto Laverna's. He actually was a little surprised to hear that I had not been here prior. My brother-in-law is a super-good guy... the kind of person who knows everybody in town, and would instantly offer to help with whatever home improvement job one might be doing, or if he sees you broke down on the side of the road he'd be there in a moment to get you back on your way. He is also, "comfortable" financially (*that's financial code-talk for, "could write a check for a new truck and the needle that indicates his bank account balance would hardly move"). Anyways, although he has friends in high places, and could upgrade to first class when he chooses, he still often picks places to eat where the "real folk" go...places where those who drive dinged-up (but loyal) trucks; who wake up at the crack of dawn to earn an honest dollar; who grab breakfast at places like Laverna's to share a story and a laugh before heading off to actually make America great come to eat. At least, this is my impression of the folks who were at Laverna's when we grabbed a late breakfast there after helping my nephew move into his dorm on move-in day. The decor here is simple and has a, "cut to the chase" and "let's getter done" vibe. Our waitress was also pretty much, "all business" at first, but once we struck on the fact that we both liked U of A Football (especially T-Mac), then she treated our table like a loving aunt. The food we feasted on was brought out quickly and is the stuff of old-school diners. A cavalcade of huge pancakes, thick-cut bacon, buttered toast, and perfectly cooked eggs were brought out. I really wanted to love this place - service was friendly enough but inattentive. I ordered the eggs with corned beef hash plate with homestyle potatoes and biscuits & gravy instead of toast. Husband couldnt decide what he wanted so ordered both pancakes and half order biscuits & gravy. We both had iced tea - only positive thing about entire meal - it was good tea. Pancakes were super dry. Gravy was lumpy and flavorless - tasted like raw flour. The homestyle potatoes were so dry - only way I could eat them was to mix with my sunny side up eggs and that barely made them edible. Corned beef hash tasted like it was from the can - I could only stomach 2-3 bites. Didn't get a picture because they took my plate while I was paying the bill. I did get pictures of all the other food we didn't eat because I had packaged it to go but ultimately threw it all away because 15 minutes after leaving I started feeling sick and have been sick all day. We got the menudo, which was good, & the 2 eggs with sausage links meal. That meal came with an option in which I chose home fries. The home fries looked and tasted very old, dry & flavorless. Maybe it was a bad day for them or maybe we went too late, either way I personally wouldn't serve those potatoes to a customer. read more

It's fairly dark and a bit dingy, but the kind of place with a lot of regulars who the very friendly staff greet by name. They're very nice to everyone. I've eaten lunch there three times and not been disappointed. Good quality and large portions of many comfort food items. I lived in Philadelphia for five years, so the first (and second) thing I ordered was the Philly Cheese Steak. While it wasn't quite like the ones I remembered from my youth, it was very good it its own way. Every time I come here I want to like it but it disappoints every time. I ordered eggs and home fries with a side of toast. The toast was the only thing that was good. The "home fries" were overcooked lumps of potatoes with no seasoning, no flavor, and were so dry that salt wouldn't even stick to them. The scrambled eggs were also overcooked. There was one server for three separate dining rooms, so while the waitress was nice and apologetic, it took a while for her to get our order. read more

Wow what a hidden gem! I wish I would have known about this little place sooner. My whole experience was great the service was great and everyone was friendly. It was very clean and welcoming but the star of the show was the food! I had the chicken fried steak eggs with hash browns everything was cooked the way I asked for it. I was talked into trying the pecan apple pancakes omg sooooo good. I couldn't even come close to eating it all so I took the pancake home and had it for dessert! Our hiking group met here for breakfast this past weekend. Our waitress had worked there for like 20 years, pretty impressive! She was great! Very accommodating to our group. She also made sure that we knew the tip was already included on the bill. Food was just ok, I ordered a flavored iced coffee that came in a red pepsi glass and had a strange flavor. My Swiss mushroom omelet was ok, the cheese wasn't real. The hashbrowns were nice and crispy. The pancakes that came out were enormous!! My friend said that her biscuits and gravy were just ok. Absolute great place. If I was a local I would take my fat butt up here everyday and eat so much until they had to lift me out with a crane. They have a bar and table seating. The staff knew all the locals by name. Even though I was new they still treated me like family. The food is amazing and better than you probably think it is if you haven't been. Was walking in a neighborhood I've never walked in before. Found this, what appeared to be a little, coffee shop but much to my surprise it wasn't little inside. It took a bit to get a server and a menu. I'm guessing most customers are regulars. However the server was very friendly, helpful with the menu questions and I got my food delivery to my table pretty fast. As for the food, it was not coffee shop appearance. I didn't know what to expect when I walked in. The outside is not really decorated and it's in a neighborhood setting. I walked in and it's very small and crowded. This was our second try to have brunch at Laverna's. The first time they were packed and we had an appointment to make so it was no fault of theirs. In fact it made us more curious to see how Laverna's rated. We chose a table that was just cleared and wiped. Our server was very nice and took our drink orders and delivered menus. The coffee was decent but I'm beginning to think every place I visit gives me their worn out cups. The cup had chips all the way around the rim, maybe I'm being to picky but it's a cheap dollar cup. At some point it should go into the trash or given a second life as a pencil holder... We ordered a variety of meals. I chose the Monte Cristo with fries, others chose the Manhattan club, the Ortega burger, and the chop steak. We all decided that the food was well presented and tasted good. The prices were a bit high but we made up for that with a $10 off restaurant.com coupon. I will return and try their breakfast fare. The pancakes are supposed to be amazing. Laverna's gets an A+ for paying attention to details. One of my pet peeves is a business that doesn't pay attention to the crud on fan blades and lights and the floor edge by the wall. For 8.49, I had two poached eggs, 4 slices of buttered toast, hashbrowns and a chicken fried steak. Everything was cooked perfectly and the environment was nice and quiet. If not for Yelp, I am certain I would never have found Laverna's. At least not for another number of years. First of all, what an obscure location for a diner. It seems like Laverna's was built first, then an industrial complex grew up around her. But, with her gritty, direct attitude and persona, it is fitting that she would be located just where she is. Laverna's seems like it would be a popular spot for mechanics (arriving still with grease-stained hands) and blue-haired ladies wearing frilly tops. Apparently, it is also quite popular with the UA crowd - especially students. And that's probably because this home cooking spot gives ample servings. Ample is probably not strong enough a word. Expect that one egg is going to look and feel like two eggs. Maybe 2.5. Serving sizes are massive. So, the verdict? The food is pretty good. Not especially distinctive. I wanted eggs Benedict, but learned that it is only served on the weekends. Ended up going with what turned out to be a heaping plate of eggs and potatoes. I couldn't finish off the meal. Also, the service is forgetful, but cordial. I got the sense that the servers were a bit maxed out. But they kept in pretty good spirits during the morning rush and while serving the two dining rooms. Oh! And there is also an AYCE fish fry on Fridays. I'll admit that I haven't heard of this place until my mom and I were out and about running errands when we decided we were hungry. At this point, I was gettin a little hangry (its real, y'all!) and since we were in the area, Mom of all suggested this place. I love these kinda places. Mom and pop kinda joint where they're open til like a little after lunch time, and you can have breakfast or lunch, or brunch. Whatever you feel like. They have daily specials, and since it was "National Burger Day," I decided to get a burger. Nothing special since I'm a burger purist. I just need meat, cheese, lettuce and tomato, and it was HUGE. I struggled to eat it. They have steak fries which are my favourite, and I got a good amount of them. One of the waitresses there was welcoming and friendly, and the others seemed kinda standoffish a bit, but since the one we had was awesome, it didn't put a damper on the experience. Don't be fooled by how the restaurant looks from outside, the inside is large, clean and well maintained. The staff wore masks and were constantly cleaning tables as soon as people left. If I could give this place zero stars, I would. We walked in, and were "greeted" by a woman hollering, "You can sit wherever. There are tables over there." We walked around looking for an open table, and made our way to a table that had just been bussed. It was at the entrance of the restaurant, but it felt crammed and loud given the number of tables arranged so losely together. My mother, grandmother, and I took a seat. The table had coffee stains and a dirty wet rag remained atop the table. It was unstable, so I took a small flyer and placed it under a leg to keep it from wobbling. After sitting and waiting for about 5 minutes, a server swooped by and said hurridly, "I'll be back to wipe down the table." She walked by about three more times and never once handed us menus nor asked if we needed water. The dirty rag remained on the table. We waited about ten minutes without being acknowledged again, so we decided to get up and leave to another restaurant where we would be more welcomed. I can understand if you are busy, but given that there was no wait and enough servers and bussers, the least I'd expect is a more attentive staff and warm welcome. We would have patiently waited longer had they simply acknowledged our existence. read more
