My quest for the perfect espresso continues, and brings me to Tucson. Well, a soccer tournament brought me here, so I took advantage and decided to give some local spots a try. This was my first stop and it made a great impression. Arrived early on a Friday (around 8am). The streets were pretty quiet, plenty of metered parking, and there were a few customers. The space is exactly my vibe... Open, rustic & quirky. Plenty of seating indoor and out. It's definitely a locals spot with lots of fliers and the like to support local artists & happenings. The staff was reserved yet friendly and professional. The espresso came with sparkling (as it should). The bitterness was on point and the temperature was perfect. I decided to get an almond croissant, for research purposes of course. They did not need to warm the croissant (as most places do) as it was moist and flaky. I imagine it wS delivered that morning. I absolutely love the vibes, very rustic and love the brick walls. They roast beans and make their own syrups which I LOVE. They have a ton of specialty drinks which made it hard to choose! Unfortunately, the service experience has not always matched the environment. From my first visit nearly two years ago, I encountered miscommunication with one of the female staff members. When I sought clarity from a male employee, she approached my table without asking and questioned whether I had done so because she was a woman. Her comment was unexpected and made me uncomfortable as a customer. I responded that I treat everyone equally, but the situation felt unprofessional and unnecessarily confrontational. Even today, the counter staff can seem impatient--especially if a customer takes a little extra time to describe their order or request. I understand that things get busy, but a little patience and courtesy go a long way in hospitality. The focus often seems to lean toward texting on the job or socializing with regulars rather than welcoming new or less-frequent customers. I'm leaving this feedback not to criticize personally, but to encourage better training on customer interaction and professionalism. It's a sweet and lil spicy latte made with a blend of Oaxacan chocolate and chili. This was a delish latte. The sweet and spicy and smoky taste just worked, everything tasted enhanced. This is a lovely little coffee shop and pretty quiet for a Saturday morning. We stopped in for coffee and snacks before heading out on the last leg of our road trip to LA. The latte was delicious, especially with the fig scone. The scone was just so gorgeous, but obviously I didn't have a problem eating it up. I ordered the iced Cafe de olla to go; that I could've lived without. Maybe because the one from the day before in El Paso was still haunting my mind. This place is lucky that their coffee is so good because their service is absolutely not. I previously gave this place 4 stars for this reason but am lowering it because the service is so bad it does leave a negative impression on you. There is exactly one nice person behind the counter that wears colorful lipstick and is nice and helpful to everyone (maybe the owner) and the rest will treat you rudely with the Gen Z stare and ignore you when asking totally unreasonable questions such as "can I order" or "your half and half is out, can I have more." It's kind of crazy to look annoyed to have your conversation with your cobariata interrupted to have a customer order or to slam down a container of half and half halfway across the counter nowhere near the customer whilst not acknowledging them at all. Even my finance who is very introverted and shy was clearly looking for a place to put dirty water cups and instead of helping, they just blankly stared, while talking and watching him. Hell, even Starbucks employees that have the look of a corporate drone with their soul sucked out of them to make ends meet are somehow way more personable than the people they hire here. Despite hiring the most unprofessional baristas known to man, Exo Roast has by far the best coffee beans in Tucson that I have tried this far. It's unfortunate that I love their roasts so much because I hate coming in here. Their selection of coffees in house is creative and they offer a free cold brew with a purchase of beans. Their seasonal syrups are also very unique and taste delicious. Also their food selection is pretty awesome because they have lots of dietary/vegan options despite having a small selection of pastries. Lastly, the place does look very cool, like a proper roasters. If you want the true hipster experience, rude af baristas with great coffee and fast service then this is your place. read more

I'm a tourist who is just here for a few days and this was such a better experience than the downtown coffee roaster I had visited yesterday. I bought a 12 oz bag of some whole bean fine Guatemala coffee roasted to a medium level. Looked taken to about 425 degree internal bean temperature. Took some back to the Airbnb, ground, drip brewed. Good stuff. Didn't stay but it was a cool little joint with a nice Probot roaster and whoever roasted what I bought I say "good job". Want to take your coffee experience higher? Got to Exo Roast Co. I found this place on Yelp in walking distance from my Airbnb.. located across from Millers Surplus by 4th Avenue. What a cute coffee spot .. there was a line when I walked in but it moved fast. All the pastries looked delicious.. I opted for the berry scone, so good, this was not a mass produced pastry. My café au lait with almond milk was frothy goodness with a little coffee art to make it a little bit special. Located inside an old exposed brick building, lots of seating indoors and a little seating outside on the side of the building. The drink menu and syrups looked delicious.. If you visit a city and don't stop by at least one local coffee joint, well that's just rude. Just kidding, kinda. My coffee addiction is definitely latte centric and I was so excited to try the mole dulce latte here at Exo Roast Co. I'm from Albuquerque where you can definitely find a red chile mocha at just about every coffee shop in town so that sweet and spicy latte is nothing new to me but I know mole isn't exactly the same and it sounded like the most locally-flavored latte on the menu so that is what I went for. First things first, the little area is under construction which I am sure will be cool once it is finished but for now, it meant limited parking on a Sunday morning. The building is super cute and we were able to park so all good. They were pretty busy for the size of the shop but my order came out pretty fast. I got my latte to go and grabbed a chocolate croissant. The croissant was slightly overbaked but still pretty good, the latte on the other hand tasted pretty unflavored until I got to the very bottom where all the sweet & spicy kind of settled. What i liked most was the design of this coffee shop and location! I ordered an iced vanilla latte that came with very little ice. Most seating was taken up by one-person patrons who were working on computers. My friend and I had to find a spot at a table for 4, who had one person seated and he politely allowed us to sit at his table. The worst part for me and my friend was the uncomfortable temperature inside this shop. It was very hot and unemployable to just sit and talk. We ended up having to cut our visit short, as it was not enjoyable. Drinks were OK, but having more ice would have made this "iced" drink waaaay more enjoyable. Service was average. read more
