Well, EXO, you let me down. My girlfriend and I came here because we like the ambience and I usually... Usually love my Matcha latte. But today there was one barista - - male - - working who had a definite low affect about him that was not welcoming our friendly. My girlfriend noticed as well and both of us received drinks that were not the best. She had a prickly pear tea and said it tasted like it had been sitting there all day. My Matcha was weak and underwhelming for almost 6 bucks. Yes I will give them a try again, but for that kind of money I can make my own at home unfortunately. read more

I came here for cocktails last night since they are only doing the mezcal tastings on the first Thursday of each month this summer. The space is super cute. It's a historic house that kind of also looks like an old school. You can choose which room to sit in or sit outside on the patio. I thought the green corn tamales were both too sweet and salty. I will try the chicken tamales next time. I wasn't a fan of the Delphine cocktail. The Paloma Rosada was very complex and an interesting blend of flavors. I really liked it at first but by the end the cinnamon was overpowering. I think next time I would order this light on the cinnamon. I liked the Hibiscus Margarita light on the spicy bitters. read more

I've been a fan of Exo for years, just yesterday I learned there is a second location. Despite already getting coffee, I convinced my hubby to go to a third coffee spot before 8:30 am. I usually get their chiltepin cold brew since it's my all time favorite, but they usually have a special and today I got the mesquite cold brew. In Tucson in July the mesquite trees of the Sonoran Desert produce beans that drop with the coming of monsoon season. If one collects the beans and dries them, they can be used to make tea, broth or syrup. I love the taste! What a Tucson treasure! This spot has lots of seating to read or chat. A great quiet coffee spot walking distance from the Tucson Convention Center. read more

I really enjoyed coming Downtown for a visit (my first!) to Exo Roast and their Spring Market, but it was tight, tight, tight inside the coffee bar and inside the outdoor patio market of three vendors! After I bought my mega Holy Focaccia pre order and got my Catherine Eyde fix, I stopped inside for a Chai and an empanada, only my Chai took so long to get, I thought for sure they'd called me and I just spaced. No. They just didn't fill my order. When I finally asked, the nonchalance I received was quite a surprise, surpassed only by the tasteless Chai that was mostly milk. Food and drinks are excellent, as is the ambience! The service is where things can get dicey. For the most part, the staff are amazing-- friendly, knowledgeable, everything you could ask for. However, there is one male server on Saturday who actively condescends patrons and smirks his way through the day. He either needs to change his attitude or get a new job. This was my first visit to Exo Roast and my only regret was that I didn't know about them/this location sooner. Their latte was rich, smoky and was so comforting that when I left, I had to also buy some espresso beans. I also tried a vegan scone - I forgot what flavor it was, maybe strawberry. Either way, it was equally good, not too sweet, a little crumbly, and paired perfectly with my latte. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. The shop itself is long and narrow, so there's only so much wiggle room. There's an ok amount of seat inside and outside. To the side of the cashier and coffee prep area, there's bar seating for two and the rest is standing bar. Near the front door is a sitting room with a small couch, a love seat and chairs for 4-5 people. In this room there's also some merchandise to peruse, such as vintage typewriters, hand made/painted cards, and match sticks. I liked the vibe here and would definitely return. read more

We stopped in to this location for a quick pick me up! The building is beautiful inside and out and there is a nice amount of indoor and outdoor seating! We went with the orange cardamom latte, mesquite cold brew, and blueberry blue corn muffin! We really enjoyed the mesquite cold brew (which I believe is seasonal for summer) and I liked the muffin (not too sweet and good blueberry flavor). Overall, we will definitely come back to this location and try some other things on the menu and grab another cold brew! read more

They offered to put in a to-go cup, but what am I going to do, take that to another shop that offers WiFi? They did apologize and explained why it's not offered etc, which I appreciate. I went to this location awhile back. The building is in a really cool location and has a nice little patio area. When I came here there appeared to be a newer barista along with a more experienced one. Newer barista was nice but the experienced one was unhelpful and just giving bad vibes. Example is asking a question and getting a non-answer in return laced with attitude. The coffee was okay but not good enough to overcome the bad customer service. read more

Well, if you're a dognutter who considers themself Christopher Columbus' number one fan, I guess this is your place, but otherwise, probably not. I'm a born and raised, brown-skinned Tucsonan who went to TUSD schools in this neighborhood growing up, and the barrio was better before Exo moved in. I've been to the original location and found it entirely mid--nothing remarkably bad or good, just yet another we're-so-unique-in-exactly-the-same-way-as-everyone-else hipster coffee joint with middling coffee. I had some time to kill before meeting with a teacher across the street, so I made the terrible decision to spend $5 on coffee and walked into this building that I've walked past my entire life. What did me in about this Exo, as opposed to the other one (though admittedly the last time I was at that one was like 2017) was when I walked in there were two dogs, including one being held right up to the counter next to the glass with the pastries, which was later taken right to the counter with the cream and sugar and held RIGHT UP BY THE COMESTIBLES, which means after I ordered my entirely unremarkable, slightly burned cold brew, I had to wait for some woman to be made aware that the universe doesn't revolve around her before I was able to add cream to my coffee, because apparently someone looking you in the eye while you stand with your dog blocking the entire counter isn't enough for some people to understand that they are, y'know, blocking an entire counter. The barista who asked her to move wasn't asking her because it's disgusting to hold up your animal next to food products but just because she was blocking me. So like I said, if you're a dognutter (that would be someone who thinks everyone on the planet is obligated to be obsessed with your dog and someone who thinks dogs are equivalent to humans), you'll love this place. If you are a normal person who would like to go places and not have everyone demand you squee over an animal, probably not. I also had a bad feeling about this place because I know for a fact that the owners who gentrified this neighborhood with their unremarkable coffee joint went to a neighborhood meeting to ask how they felt about them opening a bar to pretend as if integrating with the existing community mattered to them. They received an overwhelming NO, we don't want a BAR serving alcohol LITERALLY ACROSS THE STREET FROM AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL in this NICE FAMILY NEIGHBORHOOD where some families have lived for like a hundred years until gentrifiers got property taxes to go so high they got priced out of the homes their great great grandparents bought, and instead of respecting the fact that the community knows its neighborhood and knows what they want, the owners were like "cool, we'll technically designate this a 'restaurant' even though it's named 'bar crisol' and it's definitely just a bar that serves a couple food items, and we'll ignore everyone who said please don't do this and do it anyway, and then we'll whine about how people don't like us as if we don't know the reason why. Being gentrifiers is so haaaaaard, boohoohoo." Business owners who don't respect the communities they barge into don't deserve respect. I won't be buying coffee here again. read more

I try to come here with enough time to sit, holding a hot cup of freshly roasted coffee, comfortable sitting on the curated furniture, surrounded by vintage maps, an old typewriter... the other room is part gift shop with small thoughtful presents, a beautiful upright piano, quill nibs, spices, coffee, handmade pottery. I feel so relaxed here, remember to swing by in the evening for a clay cup of Mezcal and and slow cooked chicken and rice. Ok, I'm just going to say it, "I love Exo's Simpson Street location the mostest ever, ever, ever!" I honestly cannot imagine having a bad experience here so I'm genuinely skeptical of the few negative reviews. The space is effing gorgeous and the building was renovated perfectly to maintain the charm. Yes, it can get busy but just be patient and you'll find a spot to chill with your coffee. They just installed shade cloths on the patio and upgraded the chairs - ALLE-frickin-LULAH! The interior sitting rooms stay nice and cool though for the summer. I'm an iced latte with oat milk girly and it never disappoints. My husband buys their whole beans and we both enjoy an almond croissant when available. Service wise, I like the vibe of the barista's - I cannot stand mindless fake small talk so unless we recognize each other and can have a meaningful hi, hello, how've you been (which has happily happened) I am A-ok, keeping it transactional. We came here twice on our recent visit to Tucson since it was a close walk to our hotel and was recommended by an acquaintance as a good spot. Love the ambiance. Hip and artsy inside with two rooms to settle in, plus a lush shaded back patio and sunny front area. I appreciate that they don't gouge you for milk alternatives (it was $.25 instead of the more and more common $1+) and that they have some unique beverage options and small snack selection. My first morning I had a mole dulce latte, which was subtly sweet and spicy, and a perfectly flaky chocolate croissant. My second morning I had an orange cardamom latte, which was too syrupy, and a maple oat scone. My partner had the same issue with his matcha latte and golden milk chai, with one being perfect the first day and too sweet the other. Aside from inconsistent baristas, the staff was just not very welcoming, so we went elsewhere our other mornings. read more

My wife and I were staying in walking distance and took our toddler here for some morning drinks before going for a hike in one of the many Tucson parks. The most striking thing about this coffee shop is it's ambiance. It resides in a converted adobe home, with a phenomenally pleasant patio and two rooms to enjoy food or drinks in, one full of musical instruments. At opening on a Wednesday morning, it's not crowded at all. Birds are chirping, country music playing lightly. The orange cardamom latte was tasty, as well as the prickly pear black iced tea. I would most certainly come back. Note: while we brought our toddler, we stayed on the patio. It would have been too much to have them join us in one of the rooms where they could have messed with any number of decorations. read more

Yelp is not yet aware that El Crisol relocated from exo on 6th Ave to the Simpson road location. It is full of solid wood unfinished rustic furniture, there are old typewriters for sale with other atmospheric touches. Very comfortable nostalgic style. That bar though.... Beautifully designed craft cocktails! The prices are very reasonable for the complex delights they're concocting. Locally sourced desert ingredients, likely foraged nearby make appearances. Creosote, local lavender, Chile tepin; so blooming good! They're only open from Thursday to Sunday, in the evenings. Give them a try. read more
