We came here Saturday night for dinner. I love the romantic setting, especially when they dim the lights later on. The watermelon salad was perfection. The squid ceviche appetizer was just ok. I didn't like the sauce it came in and the squid was tough. I really liked the sauce that came on the swordfish but there wasn't enough of it and the fish itself felt a bit overcooked. The skirt steak sauce was really good but the steak itself had too much fat and was too hard to chew. Return of Robins cocktail was really good. Railside Revelry is clarified with vanilla yogurt so I didn't try it. Their special cocktail of the night was a hibiscus margarita with foam and was too salty. The Grassed Rider was really complex and delicious and I ended up getting 2 of these. He liked his Vesper Martini. Service was perfect. read more

I've lived in Tucson a long time and have heard about this restaurant time and time again but never got the chance to go, until tonight. I really wanted to like it, as it's a Tucson staple, but it just fell flat. The good: the beet appetizer. Delicious! Well-balanced! 5 stars! The bad: Risotto was very over-salted, and the chicken entree was just "meh" The ugly: the focaccia. Just no. It was so dry, and when the waiter noticed it was mostly untouched, he admitted that that is a common complaint- why keep serving it? At least they took it off the bill. At these prices the food should really be spectacular, but it's not. We'll stick with some of our other familiar favorite restaurants. read more

Perfect spot for a date night, if looking for something a little more upscale. The ambiance is very nice and intimate. We enjoyed our appetizers of the focaccia and Brussels sprouts. For entree, I had the halibut - which I enjoyed. My partner got the Cioppino- also recommend! Would come back! read more

Maynard's new chef Roderick Ledesma shines with his new menu! Absolutely thrilled and delighted that we enjoyed his new creations a lot closer than Casino Del Sol. We started with a couple of cocktails and some oysters. They were both fantastic. Star, the bar manager was super attentive and had great suggestions. The vesper and rattler were super tasty. We sampled all three oyster choices, our fav, the apple granita! What a delight those were! Next we ordered the porcini pappadrelle and the chicken roulade . Tasty, decadent and delicious!! The pappadrelle has these subtle notes of Calabrian Chilies, short rib and goodness. The chicken was moist and perfectly seasoned. To end our perfect night, we had two old fashioneds, subtly smoked. Found out that they smoke the sugar. All in all, great night. We even met up with a couple of our old Maynard's bar friends who we had not seen in years! Great music, great conversation! Well done Maynard's! Chef Roderick is killing it! read more

Enjoyed a birthday dinner with the family at Maynards and it was fantastic. We shared the foccacia, octopus ceviche, hushpuppies and shishito peppers for appetizers. Our son didn't want to pass the hushpuppies they were so good! We had a nice variety of entrees ordered. This was the best swordfish I think I've ever had. I've never had it so juicy/moist as swordfish often ends up very dry. For the first time, our entire party finished everything on the plates - nothing to take home! The drinks may have been a little on the expensive side, but they were all really good - unfortunately, they were out of the strawberry rhubarb for their specialty drink (but still had it posted on the board) Service was great and it being in the train depot makes it a fun experience. Can't wait to go back and try next season's menu. read more

Love this restaurant! One of the best in Tucson. We came here for Mother's Day and had a dandy meal. Maynard's Kitchen is a must try for everyone visiting or living in Tucson. The food is locally sourced for the most part, and you may even seen employees picking veggies or flowers if you sit near the windows. The Goat Cheese and Brulee Focaccia is a must try if you enjoy goat cheese. The jam pairs well with the goat cheese, and the focaccia is airy and moist. The Celery Salad and Heirloom Salad are both tasty. The Celery Salad has candied peanuts which add a nice texture to the dish, plus a sweet finish to the sauce. The Heirloom Salad is fresh with tomatoes and strawberries plus some sort of cheese that adds to the flavors nicely. For entrees, we tried the brisket with poblano mashed potatoes, steak with potatoes and mushrooms, and grouper with what tasted like masa underneath it. All were excellent. You can't go wrong with any dishes here! The cocktails are also uniquely curated and the waiter was extremely knowledgeable about the food and cocktails. Indoor and outdoor seating available. Best to book a reservation in advance! read more

Second visit and it was a better experience! Hamburghini 5/5 If there is any entrée that would break the rating scale, it would be this item. First of all, the hamburger is amazingly delicious!!! I highly recommend to get the patty cooked medium so you can experience the juiciness in combination with the soft buns and grilled onions. This no ordinary burger as the kewpie mayo works really well with the manchego cheese. Additionally, the fries are crispy outside and soft inside which compliments the burger really well -- definitely one of the best fries! The dipping sauce for the fries are unique as it has a hint of an herb in it. I'd suggest to get a side of ketchup if you want to alternate flavors as it can get too familiar after a few bites. Definitely will come back again for this!!! Tartare 4/5 This is a great appetizer for two people. Make sure you enjoy this with the sea salt sprinkled around the meat; it elevates the flavors a lot! Scallop Gnocchi 3/5 Scallop was not overcooked but we thought the dish was missing some crispy/crunchy texture to offset the creamy, softness of other ingredients. Otherwise, the sauce is good and not too strong, though can get boring after a few bites. Honeycomb Red Fruit Chocolate Tart 4/5 We enjoyed this dessert a lot. Definitely shareable as it is rich in chocolate and strong flavors. The orange zest works well with the honeyed cherries and chocolate. Definitely give this dessert a try! Ambiance, again, great for dates, anniversaries and birthday celebrations. Service is 5/5 - the server keeps checking in on us! read more

We walked in a bit disgruntled from an earlier experience elsewhere and walked out raving Maynard's fans. So grateful to their team for creating such a lovely experience for us and redeeming our night out. The patio is lovely. The asparagus ferns created such a whimsical, fresh feeling. The food was heavenly. We all tasted each other's and ranked the dishes. Here are our rankings: 1. Swordfish 2. Arroz Y Pollo or Hiyashi Chuka Steak 3. Vegan Mole As for the desserts: 1. Passion fruit/pineapple custard- YUM 2. Blue Corn Pound Cake Our waiter was delightful as well. Didn't get his name, but he was tall, tatted and charming. Will definitely be back next time we're in town! read more

My partner and I heard that Maynard's was closing for a few weeks in June to "reboot," so we made a reservation for the week after they reopened. They now operate as a collective of 4 chefs and have a new menu. We were greeted and seated quickly by a friendly hostess, and our waiter brought water and gave us a few moments to consider the beverage menu. I ultimately selected the Gandy Dancer (ruby chocolate washed rum, fernet, strawberry, lemon, and ginger - $14). The sweet and warm notes were perfectly balanced; I'd definitely order this again. My partner selected the Summer Interlude (agave spirits, ancho reyes, salted plum, and citrus - $15), which he enjoyed. We each ordered a small pivot salad ($8 each) that came with watermelon radishes, carrots, and smoked nuts topped by the house dressing. From a size perspective, this is not one you'll share. I selected the Scallop gnocchi ($38) for my main. Our waiter informed me that the gnocchi are made of cornmeal and have a heavier texture, which was OK by me. My plate arrived with 3 perfectly seared scallops and 8 gnocchi about the same size as the scallops. All were atop a bed of lardon and surrounded by miso beurre blanc. I missed that the dish had lardon or I would have made another selection, but I passed that part to my partner and enjoyed all of the other ingredients. My partner ordered the Corvina Sea Bass ($35), and when his plate was delivered, our waiter informed him that he had just been told they were out of Sea Bass and that it was Mahi Mahi (typically a much less expensive fish). My partner said the fish was cooked well, and he really liked the tepache glaze, which was a bit reminiscent of teriyaki. Of course, we had to try dessert. I ordered the honeycomb red fruit chocolate tart ($14), and my partner got the lemon prickly pear semifreddo ($14). The chocolate tart is flourless, and the fig cherry compote and flaked honeycomb make the dish. My partner enjoyed his choice, especially the mango on top. Maynard's was full on the evening we went, but the servers work as a collective as well. If one is walking by and sees your empty plate, they'll take it away even if they aren't "your" server. Overall, the service was attentive without being invasive or rushed. The restaurant itself has comfortable seating, nice views of the garden and patio, and good acoustics. You'll leave feeling full but not stuffed. For most, prices mean that Maynard's is reserved for special occasions. read more

Enjoyed a Mother's Day brunch here today. First, I love the whole vibe and surroundings of this restaurant. Sit in or outside of this old train depot. Their bar area is beautifully decorated. Our waitress was "Marley" and she was Spectacular! She bumped this review up a star! She was equal parts friendly, helpful, & attentive to our needs. When the breakfast potatoes tasted old and stale even after she brought us a "fresh" batch, she handled it with such grace and friendliness, never making us feel like we were the "problem." When we received our bill, she let us know that they gave us one entree on the house due to the potatoes. We definitely did not expect that. What a kind gesture! We will definitely return for dinner service and if the food is as great as we hear it is, this 4-star could very easily change to a 5-star! read more

I'm surprised that I haven't posted a review of Maynards before! This is one of my go-to places in Tucson. First of all, I love the atmosphere. The old train depot and the dining car feel of the restaurant are elegantly cozy. The service team has some of the best-trained professionals in the area. My partner and I are particularly appreciative that they don't use the pretentious service "we," i.e., "Are we ready to order? How are we enjoying the meal?" Their beverage program is very good, so have a cocktail or two and a glass of wine as well. The food is usually very good, although lately, we've had some misfires on vegetarian or vegan pasta. On our last visit, we had the mac and cheese, which needed more chiles (which were provided promptly on request), and the plantain ravioli, which was also a bit bland. A tad more seasoning on the pasta would help. The Lobster Pot and the Pork Chop, however, were fantastic. They also do fish and steaks exceptionally well. I'm happy to finally post this review after years of dining at Maynards--keep up the good work! read more

My husband made reservations here after our Shen Yun experience at the Tucson Music Hall. Maynards is located at what used to be the old train station and has that 1920's speakeasy vibe. You immediately feel transported into another era. We were seated in the private room upstairs which holds several tables and provides a more intimate experience. The room felt a little claustrophobic but I did have a window view with views of the city which helped. In summary, the service is great for the most part, the portions are small, some of the food is good, and the options are limited if you have dietary restrictions. Nehemia was our server and I immediately informed him of my gluten & dairy sensitivities. He was gracious enough to go over the menu and advise me as to what my options were. I appreciated that. He was also able to make a wine recommendation when I asked. I ordered the Sangiovese red wine which I enjoyed. Out of the deviled eggs, the oyster mushroom appetizer, the half chicken, and steak we ordered, we liked the mushroom appetizer the best. The added coconut milk sauce and squeeze of lime enhanced the seasoning and the texture of the mushrooms was almost meaty. Very flavorful. Our entrees were good but nothing to write home about. We were glad to try this restaurant but I'm not sure we'd return. I was still hungry when we left. And as other reviewers have suggested, I don't recommend this place if you have food allergies. read more

Checked out Maynards for Sonoran Restaurant Week and I'm super glad I did! Cozy fine dining experience with bar service & event space upstairs (while we were there, a wedding party was being hosted upstairs!) What I loved: the halibut - absolutely buttery & melt in mouth tender, apple rum cake- perfect balance of sweet & salty! What could be better: wine pairing (not sure if it's my not so cultured taste buds but I couldn't quite taste a different between the wines for the appetizer vs main & not entirely sure if they enhanced the flavor of the dishes; the appetizer was also a bit plain compared to what I'd expected from such a fancy space or compared to the mains/dessert (I'd gotten the spaghetti which had what I thought was a fairly standard red sauce) Regardless, I'd definitely come back on a special occasion (tips for others: remember to make a reservation!) read more

We were invited here for a graduation dinner. To be honest it's more like 3 stars for me, but I'm not trying to disrespect this business. It's a cool place with friendly service, it's just not my taste. Like.. I'm not a fan of goat cheese and all 3 salad options had goat cheese. Someone ordered the charcuterie board and it didn't look appetizing to me. We ordered the steamed mussels by process of elimination, and it was good but hardly qualified as an entree, so we were starving later. After looking on Yelp, I was decided on ordering the half chicken and some other things I saw, but when we got there, I realized it's a restaurant that changes up their menu all the time and it wasn't on the menu that day, and there were very few selections in general, and none of them sounded like must have items to me. Then I sort of got a vibe from the server that she was disappointed we didn't order more, but there just wasn't a lot of things on the menu that appealed to me. So overall it was really like a 3 star experience for me, but they don't deserve a low rating just because it's not my taste. read more

From the food to service to ambiance, everything was incredible. We were greeted by kind staff who showed us the table. Our waitress was Lily A and she was amazing, so excited for her wedding and so smiley and was SO wonderful. Very attentive and chatty and had great recommendations. We got the grilled octopus ceviche, depot Mac n cheese, and Hiyashi chuka steak and wowowow. Steak was cooked a perfect medium rare, max n cheese had a nice crispy top layer and ooey gooey cheese sauce! The ceviche was so fresh and bursting with flavor, it came with a nice thin tortilla chip on the side. We got the special drink of the day, a lime banana daiquiri which was so fun! I loved the Return of the Robins cocktail too! For dessert, we got a "surprise" which was a lovely churro with whipped cream and blueberry compote, and WOW it was devoured within 30 seconds! Absolutely wonderful experience, which was elevated by such a kind and energetic waitress Lily, we had a great time. read more

Nice to have Maynards open again. We made reservations for 6:30pm and was seated on time. Service was quick with water brought out when we were seated. We ordered crusty bread with the foie gras. The bread was warm and soft and the foie gras good. I had the Sonoran wheat ravioli. The sauce was very good with lots of corn but only 2 raviolis. We agreed our entrees were delicious, but the servings were small for the price. We also got told the hostess and server that we were celebrating a birthday and they acknowledged it but nothing special was made of it. Which was a disappointment. read more

We've been long time lovers of Maynards, and used to enthusiastically attend their wine dinners, in addition to standard dining. So we were so excited they are open again. We arrived a little before 5 and sat at the bar for a bit. The beer list has been dramatically reduced and is draft only, so my dining partner struggled a little to find something decent (and ended up with decent, not great). A little disappointing since they used to have some great and unusual choices. But the bartender was lovely and offered a couple of different wines for me to taste - wine options were far better than beer. Service was also excellent when we were seated. Server was knowledgeable and friendly, and we were never without water or a fresh glass of wine or beer when we wanted it. We decided on the tasting menu, since there were many things we wanted to try and I'd heard good things. And every element was delicious, even the course they had to sub out (the pasta) so I could be gluten free. But...the portions were TINY. I'm a 40 year old woman on the small side and typically eat 1200-1500 calories a day and take home half or more of my entree when we eat out. So it wasn't like I was expecting Claim Jumper portions. But at the end of the meal, I was mostly satisfied but not actually full. Majority of the courses were 1-3 bites. Those bites tasted amazing, but were just so tiny. And there seemed to be opportunities to fill out the plates without a big increase in cost. For example, there was a parsnip dish that was delicious, but it was one parsnip the size of a baby carrot. 2-3 instead would have bulked up the meal quite a bit. Same with the tomato and watermelon salad. Doubling the portion from 1.5 cherry tomatoes to 3 doesn't seem like a crazy idea. We ordered an extra appetizer (fois gras) and desert (madelines) to round out the meal and the fois gras was also minuscule - $21 for about 4 bites. So at least for now we will limit ourselves to a drink and snack vs dinner. read more

Wish I could give 3.5 stars. And they would all go to the service and ambiance. I've been wanting to come here for a long time and finally did date night. It was so cute and pretty inside, there was so much greenery to look outside at! Our server and all the staff were amazing and our server was super knowledgeable and described the drinks and dishes so well. But we didn't care for the food. For dropping $200 with tip, I would not do it again. We started with the burrata salad and focaccia bread. Both were decent. The heirloom tomatoes were a bit on the hard and unripe side. I got the sea bass which wasn't anything special in my opinion. I thought it lacked flavor... a punch? Salt? Idk but it wasn't anything I'd go back for. My husbands ribeye didn't appear to be a great cut of meat. The first one we received was well done and they promptly replaced it with a rare that he asked for. But the flavor was lacking there... but we're also big steak eaters and our standards are kinda high. Overall I'd come back again for drinks, and maybe dessert since we didn't get to try that. read more

We went for Valentine's Day and did the 6 course tasting menu, with wine pairings. While the food was amazing, the wine pairings stole the show -- each dish was accentuated in such unique ways with the wines. They were mindful of allergies and our server was super fun. Maynards is the epitome of a classy restaurant! The service was impeccable, the food divine, and the building and atmosphere made us feel like we were in a movie. What an incredible place! Last night my husband and I celebrated our two year anniversary and they made us feel so special with some lovely touches... first a hand signed card and two glasses of champagne and at the end delicious, homemade churros! Alejandra was our server and she was so friendly and professional! We really enjoyed her service! The manager (blond, friendly and young) was also so welcoming when we arrived and you could see how invested he is in his staff and guests! He was always around helping his team and checking on guests! These shouldn't be rare qualities but sadly many restaurants don't treat their guests this way so we were very impressed and will 100% return! We ordered the 6-course tasting menu with the wine pairings and the value for what we got was incredible! The entire dinner and wine choices were on point and everything was so delicious, fresh and beautifully plated! The train passing by while we dined was also so cool, just made the experience even more unique. While we rarely eat in Tucson (we usually come down occasionally for a hike and quick meal and back to Phoenix) we now have every reason to return for more little weekends away from home. So happy that the market is now open during lunch time. It has been way too long we have missed this gem. The perfect weather this weekend gave us perfect reason to go have lunch on their patio. The garden was fragrant and the sounds from the train close by was a friendly charming because of the contrast of busy downtown to birds chirping and greenery in bloom. The menu didn't change significantly but found a new fave! The garden sandwich with side salad (substituted additional option) were nice. The sandwich is toasted with cheese + tomato on sourdough was nice. The salad has frisky thin cut carrot, and liked the balsamic dressing. In addition to the fresh and uniquely prepared food with local and in-season ingredients, the coffee and dessert were exceptionally good. Housed in the historic district's train station, Maynard's is a standout for its appealing location and dimensional menu. Part of the Hotel Congress, which is directly across the street, the restaurant has smooth service from hostess stand to table, with the feel that the waitstaff are doing this as a career, not a side job. The mains were well prepared (salmon with sourdough spaetzle and beets and porkbelly with grits and kale), and the house-made focaccia was an unexpected star of the show. The only minor criticism would be for the staff to slow down the pacing of the meal and dish removal a bit, so courses don't arrive in quick succession and plates aren't cleared the minute the fork drops. Perfect place to enjoy a romantic evening or entertain guests. read more

If you're looking for a nice restaurant downtown to celebrate a special occasion or for a fancy date night, Maynard's is a great option. Located in a historic train depot, it has a unique ambiance, and the staff is lovely. The food is delicious, incorporating local ingredients, and the menu changes based on what's in season. It is separated into sections - the first two are smaller, appetizer style plates, followed by 4 mains to choose from then desserts. The dishes are beautifully plated, and you can taste the quality of the ingredients and the cooking. Our favorites have been their pasta and seafood dishes - the two times we've had their spaghetti it's been made in house and the fish (halibut and swordfish) have been cooked perfectly (moist, not dry at all, well seasoned). The cocktail and wine list rotates too - the wines are our favorite because they offer such a lovely selection of reds. Highly recommend making a reservation, but if you don't get one, the bar offers the full menu as well or if you come early for your reservation, you can grab a drink while you wait for your table. read more
