Perfect spot for a date night, if looking for something a little more upscale. The ambiance is very nice and intimate. We enjoyed our appetizers of the focaccia and Brussels sprouts. For entree, I had the halibut - which I enjoyed. My partner got the Cioppino- also recommend! Would come back!
Maynard's new chef Roderick Ledesma shines with his new menu! Absolutely thrilled and delighted that we enjoyed his new creations a lot closer than Casino Del Sol. We started with a couple of cocktails and some oysters. They were both fantastic. Star, the bar manager was super attentive and had great suggestions. The vesper and rattler were super tasty. We sampled all three oyster choices, our fav, the apple granita! What a delight those were! Next we ordered the porcini pappadrelle and the chicken roulade . Tasty, decadent and delicious!! The pappadrelle has these subtle notes of Calabrian Chilies, short rib and goodness. The chicken was moist and perfectly seasoned. To end our perfect night, we had two old fashioneds, subtly smoked. Found out that they smoke the sugar. All in all, great night. We even met up with a couple of our old Maynard's bar friends who we had not seen in years! Great music, great conversation! Well done Maynard's! Chef Roderick is killing it!
Good food as always but something has changed as the food looked and tasted different today and we've been here many times. Has the chef changed maybe? New owner? Anyway, still good ambiance and good service.
Great cocktails and the Mac and cheese appetizer was delicious. Indoor and outdoor seating and a separate cocktail lounge next to the dining space. The food was decent and while I would not come here for the meal alone...the ambiance, location downtown ( valet parking for $6 until midnight on a Friday night is not too bad ) and the drinks would be a good place to bring company visiting the city to.
Love this restaurant! One of the best in Tucson. We came here for Mother's Day and had a dandy meal. Maynard's Kitchen is a must try for everyone visiting or living in Tucson. The food is locally sourced for the most part, and you may even seen employees picking veggies or flowers if you sit near the windows. The Goat Cheese and Brulee Focaccia is a must try if you enjoy goat cheese. The jam pairs well with the goat cheese, and the focaccia is airy and moist. The Celery Salad and Heirloom Salad are both tasty. The Celery Salad has candied peanuts which add a nice texture to the dish, plus a sweet finish to the sauce. The Heirloom Salad is fresh with tomatoes and strawberries plus some sort of cheese that adds to the flavors nicely. For entrees, we tried the brisket with poblano mashed potatoes, steak with potatoes and mushrooms, and grouper with what tasted like masa underneath it. All were excellent. You can't go wrong with any dishes here! The cocktails are also uniquely curated and the waiter was extremely knowledgeable about the food and cocktails. Indoor and outdoor seating available. Best to book a reservation in advance!
Second visit and it was a better experience! Hamburghini 5/5 If there is any entrée that would break the rating scale, it would be this item. First of all, the hamburger is amazingly delicious!!! I highly recommend to get the patty cooked medium so you can experience the juiciness in combination with the soft buns and grilled onions. This no ordinary burger as the kewpie mayo works really well with the manchego cheese. Additionally, the fries are crispy outside and soft inside which compliments the burger really well -- definitely one of the best fries! The dipping sauce for the fries are unique as it has a hint of an herb in it. I'd suggest to get a side of ketchup if you want to alternate flavors as it can get too familiar after a few bites. Definitely will come back again for this!!! Tartare 4/5 This is a great appetizer for two people. Make sure you enjoy this with the sea salt sprinkled around the meat; it elevates the flavors a lot! Scallop Gnocchi 3/5 Scallop was not overcooked but we thought the dish was missing some crispy/crunchy texture to offset the creamy, softness of other ingredients. Otherwise, the sauce is good and not too strong, though can get boring after a few bites. Honeycomb Red Fruit Chocolate Tart 4/5 We enjoyed this dessert a lot. Definitely shareable as it is rich in chocolate and strong flavors. The orange zest works well with the honeyed cherries and chocolate. Definitely give this dessert a try! Ambiance, again, great for dates, anniversaries and birthday celebrations. Service is 5/5 - the server keeps checking in on us!
We walked in a bit disgruntled from an earlier experience elsewhere and walked out raving Maynard's fans. So grateful to their team for creating such a lovely experience for us and redeeming our night out. The patio is lovely. The asparagus ferns created such a whimsical, fresh feeling. The food was heavenly. We all tasted each other's and ranked the dishes. Here are our rankings: 1. Swordfish 2. Arroz Y Pollo or Hiyashi Chuka Steak 3. Vegan Mole As for the desserts: 1. Passion fruit/pineapple custard- YUM 2. Blue Corn Pound Cake Our waiter was delightful as well. Didn't get his name, but he was tall, tatted and charming. Will definitely be back next time we're in town!
My partner and I heard that Maynard's was closing for a few weeks in June to "reboot," so we made a reservation for the week after they reopened. They now operate as a collective of 4 chefs and have a new menu. We were greeted and seated quickly by a friendly hostess, and our waiter brought water and gave us a few moments to consider the beverage menu. I ultimately selected the Gandy Dancer (ruby chocolate washed rum, fernet, strawberry, lemon, and ginger - $14). The sweet and warm notes were perfectly balanced; I'd definitely order this again. My partner selected the Summer Interlude (agave spirits, ancho reyes, salted plum, and citrus - $15), which he enjoyed. We each ordered a small pivot salad ($8 each) that came with watermelon radishes, carrots, and smoked nuts topped by the house dressing. From a size perspective, this is not one you'll share. I selected the Scallop gnocchi ($38) for my main. Our waiter informed me that the gnocchi are made of cornmeal and have a heavier texture, which was OK by me. My plate arrived with 3 perfectly seared scallops and 8 gnocchi about the same size as the scallops. All were atop a bed of lardon and surrounded by miso beurre blanc. I missed that the dish had lardon or I would have made another selection, but I passed that part to my partner and enjoyed all of the other ingredients. My partner ordered the Corvina Sea Bass ($35), and when his plate was delivered, our waiter informed him that he had just been told they were out of Sea Bass and that it was Mahi Mahi (typically a much less expensive fish). My partner said the fish was cooked well, and he really liked the tepache glaze, which was a bit reminiscent of teriyaki. Of course, we had to try dessert. I ordered the honeycomb red fruit chocolate tart ($14), and my partner got the lemon prickly pear semifreddo ($14). The chocolate tart is flourless, and the fig cherry compote and flaked honeycomb make the dish. My partner enjoyed his choice, especially the mango on top. Maynard's was full on the evening we went, but the servers work as a collective as well. If one is walking by and sees your empty plate, they'll take it away even if they aren't "your" server. Overall, the service was attentive without being invasive or rushed. The restaurant itself has comfortable seating, nice views of the garden and patio, and good acoustics. You'll leave feeling full but not stuffed. For most, prices mean that Maynard's is reserved for special occasions.
Enjoyed a Mother's Day brunch here today. First, I love the whole vibe and surroundings of this restaurant. Sit in or outside of this old train depot. Their bar area is beautifully decorated. Our waitress was "Marley" and she was Spectacular! She bumped this review up a star! She was equal parts friendly, helpful, & attentive to our needs. When the breakfast potatoes tasted old and stale even after she brought us a "fresh" batch, she handled it with such grace and friendliness, never making us feel like we were the "problem." When we received our bill, she let us know that they gave us one entree on the house due to the potatoes. We definitely did not expect that. What a kind gesture! We will definitely return for dinner service and if the food is as great as we hear it is, this 4-star could very easily change to a 5-star!
Food is seasonal with 6 appetizers and 8 main entrees. I was not a fan of my entree only because I'm a picky eater, give this restaurant a chance and you never know it might be one of your favorite ones to visit. Prices are between $-$$ Drinks are delicious and the dessert menu with the after dinner dessert drinks looks very good too. M Service was perfect and Alejandra was very attentive to our needs Ambiance is a perfect place for a date night , or anniversary with dimmed lights and reg decor was settle but elegant.
I'm surprised that I haven't posted a review of Maynards before! This is one of my go-to places in Tucson. First of all, I love the atmosphere. The old train depot and the dining car feel of the restaurant are elegantly cozy. The service team has some of the best-trained professionals in the area. My partner and I are particularly appreciative that they don't use the pretentious service "we," i.e., "Are we ready to order? How are we enjoying the meal?" Their beverage program is very good, so have a cocktail or two and a glass of wine as well. The food is usually very good, although lately, we've had some misfires on vegetarian or vegan pasta. On our last visit, we had the mac and cheese, which needed more chiles (which were provided promptly on request), and the plantain ravioli, which was also a bit bland. A tad more seasoning on the pasta would help. The Lobster Pot and the Pork Chop, however, were fantastic. They also do fish and steaks exceptionally well. I'm happy to finally post this review after years of dining at Maynards--keep up the good work!
My husband made reservations here after our Shen Yun experience at the Tucson Music Hall. Maynards is located at what used to be the old train station and has that 1920's speakeasy vibe. You immediately feel transported into another era. We were seated in the private room upstairs which holds several tables and provides a more intimate experience. The room felt a little claustrophobic but I did have a window view with views of the city which helped. In summary, the service is great for the most part, the portions are small, some of the food is good, and the options are limited if you have dietary restrictions. Nehemia was our server and I immediately informed him of my gluten & dairy sensitivities. He was gracious enough to go over the menu and advise me as to what my options were. I appreciated that. He was also able to make a wine recommendation when I asked. I ordered the Sangiovese red wine which I enjoyed. Out of the deviled eggs, the oyster mushroom appetizer, the half chicken, and steak we ordered, we liked the mushroom appetizer the best. The added coconut milk sauce and squeeze of lime enhanced the seasoning and the texture of the mushrooms was almost meaty. Very flavorful. Our entrees were good but nothing to write home about. We were glad to try this restaurant but I'm not sure we'd return. I was still hungry when we left. And as other reviewers have suggested, I don't recommend this place if you have food allergies.
Maynards Market is fabulous! They have great sandwiches and breakfast sandwiches! The Barista, who is really the bartender made the BEST Dirty Chia I have had in 3 states!! They have a great array of Wines for Sale, and a full service Bar. You can sit outside or at the bar/tables. So if you're Downtown or just using Amtrak come on in and check them out. Best server/ Barista/Bartender/Clerk: Bennett Best Cook: Michael - Single n Good looking.

Absolutely fantastic!! Star the bartender was so knowledgeable about everything. She elevated the environment and I didn't want to leave it was an amazing night. First time trying tartare and it will be my newest obsession. From out of state but will be top on my list when I come back to Tucson. read more

LOVE the atmosphere and vibe of this restaurant - dimly lit (but not too dim), making it feel intimate and romantic. I went here with my parents and a close friend, so there were four of us. My mom had made our reservation ahead of time and we got their early to take a look at the train and statues which I recommend if you haven't visited the station. We opted for two orders of the pommes frites to start which were tasty (and my dad had been RAVING about these particular frites; I'd say they were more like traditional fries rather than the skinny crunchy "frites" you imagine, but still tasty). Three of us shared a couple bottles of the 'Purely Sedona' sparkling water that they offer (this was my first time trying this brand and I was impressed), while my friend enjoyed two of Maynard's craft Manhattans, which came in a lovely martini glass. Food was delicious, especially the salmon 'catch of the day' with lavender chimichurri sauce (which was my order). We loved the sauce so much we ordered two extra sides of to dip our bread in! Our waiter came out and told us the chef was pleased we like the sauce so much. My mom ordered the market salad which is exactly what you'd expect - you can't go wrong with a good salad right? My dad and friend both ordered the pork belly which had a nice presentation and they enjoyed. The four of us shared the Ibarra Chocolate Torte for dessert and if you like extremely rich, extremely chocolatey desserts- this is for you! My dad is the KING of over-the-top chocolate desserts and we couldn't even finish one between the four of us. It will certainly satisfy your sweet tooth if you want something decadent. FYI bathrooms are upstairs and you'll find some interesting art/news on the walls :) read more

Hi Jennifer! This is Nick, the new General Manager/Chef of Maynard's…
This was our third trip to this market. We love the open patio overlooking the train tracks. It was a beautiful day, and we couldn't resist the aromas from Maynards. At the Market, you order at the counter, and can watch them fix your meal. They deliver to your table. There are amazing baked goods, many bottles of wine and yummy sandwiches, soups and salads for lunch. We had the BLT, the pastrami Reuben and Cesar salad. All portions were very good size. They offer add-in's for the salad. My friend added chicken to hers and a half-salad was plenty big. The bread is fresh and hearty. Chips come with the sandwiches. The cookies and pastries were a delight. Definitely a great breakfast or lunch destination. read more

Came in a bit later on a Wednesday night, as this place is pretty close to my hotel and sounded good. I think I've been here a couple times but a bit of time has passed. Got seated right away, the hostess and water guy and server were super friendly (solo dining!) And had good recommends. I had a pretty heavy lunch (fajitas) so I opted for the the market fish and a side of risotto since the hostess said it was delicious. I ordered right away and then proceeded to be the annoying diner on her phone the whole meal. I don't think people minded. The fish was great and risotto too! meal also came with bread and some herb butter. Noise level was pretty normal/low ish, not quiet but not loud. read more

This restaurant is located in the Historic train depot. We tried Maynard's based on a friends suggestion that lives in Tuscon. We were visiting from out of state. It appears that staffing is an issue here, tables were empty but we had to wait to be seated( we were 15 mins. Early) we waited in the front of the restaurant and asked for cocktails. The hostess was sure to tell the bar we were there. The bartender was great and answered questions and took our order. We were seated and greeted by our server. We had the mushrooms and deviled eggs for apps. Placed an order for a bottle of wine and our entrees. 2-pork, 1- swordfish and the beef coulotte. Food was delicious, beef was cooked fine but not served hot. Overall good experience although our server while professional was not engaging and seemed distracted. The whole experience seemed rushed, you took a reservation for 8pm but started cleaning while we were still eating. We would go back just earlier in the evening. read more
Happy 10th Anniversary to us! Heard this place was great. Really nice wine list. From astronomical to reasonable. We shared the chicory salad. They did not split it. The salad was very unique and delicious. Velvet had the Butternut squash risotto. Served with a wonderful crispy mushroom duxelle. (Fritter). I had the ricotta gnocchi. Had a bunch of goodness mixed in. It was wonderful. Barrio bread with herb butter on the side. Our server was Jackie. Sweet and efficient. She kept our wine glasses full and was very attentive. This place is first class. read more

Great weeknight dinner! Excellent drinks, food, and service! Great location with parking. The Water Lily cocktail was absolutely delicious! We especially enjoyed the sauce with the Shishito Peppers. All of the entrees were presented beautifully and delicious, too. One of the best Flourless Chocolate Cakes I've had! Will definitely be back! read more

Somewhat disappointing! Made reservations and got a crappy table. Half full and still got a crappy table. So when you book on line and they ask about table or request. Do not bother. Ordered steak tartar. Ok. This was pretty good but not spectacular. We split the squash risotto with shrimp and sausage. Again good but not spectacular. Over all just ok! The standard was mediocre. So I was disappointed. The coffee came out cold. So when they brought out hot coffee, I am not sure what it was? The cold coffee at least tasted like coffee the hot coffee tasted like something else. Not sure what it was. The bread was good. The first time out the butter was nice at room temperature. The second round the butter was solid and cold. To summarize this is safe yet unspectacular. I was not wowed at all but it was not a disaster either. read more

Came here for one reason, and one reason only. Poutine! I've been itching for a poutine fix in Tucson and this is one of the only places with some! In the market poutine isn't on the menu, but it is in the restaurant. A man behind the counter told us that he could order it for uus in the market, which was great! The poutine was good, a little salty, but good quality, and had bits of meat too! Lovely happy hour vibe. There's a huge patio with a garden. I'll warn you that the train comes by every so often, but that's just part of the charm! On the way out I saw the pastry case, and I honestly could have eaten anything and everything in there. I will be back! Those brownies and macarons are calling. Update! Came back for a brownie.....it was totally worth it! read more

I have been to Maynard's so many times; I'm not sure why I haven't posted a review sooner. It's one of my favorite spots in downtown Tucson. The food is consistently good, the outdoor patio is sweet, the service is always stellar, the Summer wine tastings are fun, and their private rooms are perfect for business meetings. Whatever the occasion and mood, Maynard's has you covered! Their menu is always different each time I go and the food never disappoints. The presentation is also beautiful. I've had many of their salads and entrees, and of course, dessert. Trust me, you want to save room for their rich and decadent deserts. The wine tastings are also really nice as long as you don't mind a crowd. Get there early if you want to find a seat! I don't necessarily recommend a large party unless you plan to stand or get there before it starts to stake out a spot. It is downtown so there isn't much metered parking. There is valet and I've always found a spot in the parking garage behind Hotel Congress. If you haven't tried Maynard's yet, go! It's awesome! read more

Thank you for the fabulous review and your patronage to Maynards…
When I first went to Maynards restaurant, it was a fine dining establishment in a stunning building overlooking the train tracks in downtown Tucson - the waiters were well dressed, it had linen table-cloths, and was better served for a special occasion dinner. Today it is so much more tthan just this experience for no matter what your budget, you can dine here. With the Market, you can get your breakfast, lunch, dinner or drinks, and enjoy them on patio. read more

Stop by for a quick happy hour, was pleasantly surprised that they had a chefs board and a bottle of wine for $20. Happy hour is from 4 PM to 8 PM daily and they have a ton of drink and food specials. It was nice being able to sit inside and enjoy the weather. They have a beautiful patio where you could say unfortunately it was raining that day but the view was beautiful and very clean and comfortable. Would definitely be back to try some of their entrées and hopefully some more wine. The place is beautiful and immaculate and has a great ambience. Bartenders were quick and took your order right away. Food came out fairly quickBut more than anything we enjoyed the location and how beautiful they keep it. read more

Maynard's is one of the best places in downtown Tucson for a high-quality and out-of-the-ordinary meal. We generally go for special occasions or date nights because it is on the pricier side, bug we are rarely let down. We most recently attended the prix fixe meal for Valentine's and it is a great way to try something you wouldn't ordinarily order or even have access to. I'm a notoriously picky eater, but I still enjoy all of the dishes that are offered. So, don't be afraid of fine dining if you're normally a picky person. They also source almost all of their food from Arizona vendors. My favorite things here are the vegetarian dishes, so you can't go wrote with any of those options. The alcohol and wine selection are wonderful here and we have been able to take advantage of a sommelier service in the past. Check this place out sooner rather than later. read more

I've been to Cup Cafe a few times and got the chance to check out the sister restaurant last night. It's a nice, classed-up atmosphere. Candelit, white paper top tables with crayons for doodling. The only downside is that trains pass by about every half hour. Combined with a lively dining room makes for a noisier restaurant than most others. But, it's a good sign that it's a hot spot. Our server was courteous and knowledgeable of the menu. I ordered the heirloom tomato risotto, my date the house made pesto pasta. Both dishes were some of the best I'd ever tasted. The risotto had layers of flavor; from the sharp Parmesan, to the tart tomatoes, the spice of the pickled peppers, and the texture contrast of the eggplant and shiitake mushrooms. Everything worked together really well in the dish. Just glad there was enough for leftovers the next day. The pesto pasta was flavorful and al dente. Next time, I'll try a meat/fish dish as I was very impressed by this vegetarian option. read more

As returning guests, we find Maynard's a charming and special place to dine in Tucson, with passing trains as the floor show! Maynard's is in the historic downtown Tucson Amtrak station, sports a lovely patio, great menu, beautiful presentations and great service! We recently hosted a wedding dinner for our son and his new bride on the patio and it was a perfect evening! We have also dined inside and this place never disappoints! Chef/owner Brian Smith has upgraded food sourcing to support local and sustainable farms, etc. Always a plus for us! Make your reservation and thank us later!! read more

3 of us stopped at Maynard's today for lunch. It's a great place for lunch! Here's the food; I had the veggie sandwich. It came with home made chips. All yummy! 1/2 Cuban and avocado grapefruit salad - superb! Salad was fresh and inventive. Jalapeños on the Cuban was a nice touch. 1/2 Ham and Brie sandwich and the same salad - also superb. Also delish! One problem: I wanted a second beer and had to go back to the cashier and wait in line with the others that were deciding what they wanted for lunch. So you wait and wait. This is a business model flaw and really should be modified. Even with that, it's worth a visit. I'll be back. Maybe get a bottle of wine instead of beer. read more
