The 2 stars is the combination of 4 stars for food and 0 stars for service. What a dis-service by the front of the house to the excellent work by the kitchen. The service was non-existent and I believe they were totally apathetic to it. Not sure we will return. read more

Couldn't ask for a nicer patio. Outside an old railway terminal. Lovely looking restaurant. We sat under the lights and really felt roantic, especially when the Amtrak sleeper pulled in right across from us and we watched the ballet of folk getting on and off and the guard calling 'all aboard'. Shame the food was so lacking. Corn Leek soup had way too much flour used and whilst there was a corn taste, no leek at all. Odd lumps of Leek and botton of small portion, CHARCUTERIE was a let down. Rillete was drowned in clarified butter on top, just too much. Smooth chicken pate wasy too much cream so totally lost liver depth or taste. Summer cassoulet was nice and I would have again. Fish of day (Halibut) was way over priced and chewy no flavour (previously frozen?) I would return for a drink on patio if they allow, but not the food, Previous night I ate at "the Dish" it was superb. They should have them train chef here read more

I would have to agree with Corey on this one. Everything about this night was great. I did try a few of the food options and they were all delicious! We were first given a plate with different cheeses, apple slices and figs. A waiter brought everyone sitting at the bar fresh french fries with a mayo type dip, which was very tasty. The scallop that chef Addam brought out to us was to die for! I also tried a couple different drinks, an apple martini (super good) and the Boxcar 203-9, which was also good. All in all the night was fantastic!! read more

A wonderful renovated space. Very warm, quiet and comfortable. It was fun watching the trains go by. Bistro salad was s great take on a French frisée salad. Bouillabaisse was very good too. Service was great! Outdoor seating available with propane heaters. Really quite charming! read more

Maynard's Kitchen is an awesome choice for a moderately upscale evening downtown. Quite a Tucson institution: The bar in relatively gigantic compared to the restaurant itself and is always full on Friday and Saturday nights. This is a good sign; full bar means excellent wine/cocktails. I wouldn't exactly go here for the cocktails... but their wine collection (though not extensive for Maynard's concept) is completely adequate and the bartender recommends wine with specific foods. The bartender is mature - probably a good choice for a moderately upscale restaurant. He is collected, decisive, and informative while still oferring a more casual experience for the bar-top. I feel like the wine-pour is pretty large, which is always a plus. The most remarkable part of this restaurant is the cuisine. Obviously modern American, it mixes comfort food with a French base. Gastro-pub meets eloquent. It almost has a New York feel, but unpretentious nonetheless. The portions are a good amount. We got the steak and learned that it was grass-fed and pretty local - cearly the future of modern-American cuisine. Maynard's will be around for a while - and for good reason. The only issue in months to come will be price. However, the price is totally reflected in the food itself and lends an experience to Tucson worth paying for. read more

Took some friends to Brunch on Sunday and we all enjoyed it very much! Everything that we ordered was tasty and the presentation equally as nice. We had great service and were not rushed. Afterwards we took our drinks out on the patio and had more relaxing conversation. Its a great place for couples, families and groups. read more

Had a hair cut appointment at Salon Salon which is in the same strip as Maynards. So for convenience sake we stopped in for the Happy Hour which is daily from 4-8 PM. Not a bad deal. They have 3 different pizzas, mussels, oysters, potine which I believe is a New Orleans dish. It has duck confetti, duck sauce, local cheese over french fries. Solid dish for sure. Also a natural burger from Niman Ranch stacked high with lots of goodies. Very tasty. You can also sit outside and view the trains going by. Band plays on weekends. Really a great deal if you are downtown and just want a light bite. The regular menu looked good as well. A bit pricey for me. My goal is good food and cheap. read more

I read about this place in several different locations, so we decided to try it out for my husband's birthday last month. First off, the restaurant is absolutely gorgeous inside and the outside extensive patio too. We sat at the bar for happy hour and enjoyed a glass of wine, a cheese plate and the shrimp cocktail - what a bargain for high quality food and service. We then moved to the patio to enjoy our dinner. I had the duck and really enjoyed my selection. There were so many great choices on the menu, so I am confident we will be back again. read more

I can't really give a bunch of stars to a place that's great once; it's consistency that adds the extra star or two. Maynard's is now my favorite place in Tucson. New wait staff actually are trained the correct, yet laborious way, by following the senior staff around and watching and learning. This keeps a place consistently professional and the quality of service consistently high. Kudos for that. The food is generous and excellent. Atmosphere professional. Service, again, superb, formal but not stuffy -- they are trained to serve you well. My commendations! Let's see, for lunch the steak is incredible, as well as the cubano -- black iced tea, strong and freshly brewed and continuously flowing. read more

Maynard's never disappoints and it just may be my favorite restaurant in Tucson. The train station vibe takes dining to a whole new level. The service is always impeccable. Tonight our server was Steve who was incredibly kind and polite, and really knew his stuff when it came to wine. One of the better servers I've had. We ordered the mushroom puff pastry which was rich, buttery, and full of earthy flavors. I had the pasta special which was housemade basil pasta with a lovely herb cream sauce and fresh tomatoes. Their pasta of the day specials are always great. My husband and I decided we are going to come here once a month for a special dinner! We love it! read more

Went to Maynard's on Saturday night for the first time to have dinner with my husband. We were there for about three hours and tried 6 of the cocktails off of the menu. They were all delicious. My husband is kind of a booze snob and he was very impressed with their selection and uniqueness of the menu. Our waiter was very patient and helped answer any questions about the food. For an appetizer we started off with the bruschetta which is made with goat cheese, lentil salad, and topped with the thinnest sliced prosciutto I have ever seen. Very delicious. Since we were drinking so much we weren't actually hungry for individual entrees, so I order the citrus salad and my hubby ordered the yearling potato. The salad was simple but huge with tasty dressing. We then split the caramelized pear, currant, and chicken pizza. It was very light and tasty. Then, omg, we ordered desert. You can check out the picture I uploaded. It was a chocolate torte with chocolate ganache, topped with almonds in suspended sugar, topped with a sea-salted caramel. This thing was so insanely amazing. I can't stop thinking about it. All in all, a very romantic evening in a unique restaurant in downtown Tucson. We will return when we plan on the majority of our bill going to drinks. read more

Maynards - amazing chocolate torte with chocolate ganache, almonds in suspended sugar, sea-salted caramel - Sandwiches Near Me - Tucson, Arizona

Very disappointed. Been coming here for lunch about every week or two for past 4 years. Always had the best sandwiches in Tucson! Always nice people too. Today the gal was very curt/clipped with our two interactions with us. The 'veggie melt' sandwich was off 'new' menu and couldn't be ordered because they 'don't have the vegetables' on hand. 'Seasonal' was mentioned...they were not but you can have different vegetables if that IS true. She said they change menus 'every few months' by season. Also not true. We've been going there for 4 years, 5 months of winter season. My 5 star post from December dropped to two stars. We will try the Market on Congress. They have huge Deli, lots of veggies! read more

Excellent coffee and very friendly service! Wonderfully kitschy stuff and great atmosphere

What a nice spot! We ate dinner inside (would have happily eaten out on the plaza if it had been available) and it was delicious - the beef short ribs were cooked just right and very flavorful (served on a yummy celery potato whip thingie). I appreciated the waiter's steering me away from ordering a salad due to the size of the entree. Service was attentive and friendly. It's cozy seating, and was a bit noisy (or maybe our neighbors were just loud), but it was still pleasant. Most memorable for me were the passing trains and the incredibly rich and wonderful French hot chocolate that I had for dessert. Interesting menu and nice wine selection. We will definitely go back next time we're in the area, and take the time to wanter around the adjacent market as well - it looked like fun. read more

I went here with a friend of mine for a delightful mid-morning / afternoon treat. We browsed the farmers market and found some amazing honey, salsa, meats, and more! Then, we ended up eating in the kitchen and it was delicious! Followed by lunch we went to the store and bought some macaroons - which was my first time to have these delicacies and they were out of this world! Overall, we had a lovely time! read more

We went for our anniversary. Reading the reviews I was a bit worried since everyone mentioned the ambiance and hipness while not as many mentioned the food. Rest assured it blew us away and Maynard's is now on our list for special occasion meals. To set things straight: Contrary to the reviews, this restaurant doesn't shout "hip". The decor is classy. Staff is dressed normally like any other high end restaurant. Dishes are fairly standard french style and not freakish or extravagant. Flavors are standard french classic combinations done right, with an emphasis on quality ingredients. The star of the evening for us was a leek corn soup, one of the starters. Roasted corn and leeks were blended into a puree. A dollop of creme fraiche in the middle. A citrusy, pickled fennel core sliced super-thin in the soup. And finely shredded crispy fennel fronds (tasting like toasted onions) off to the side. What an amazing mix of flavors and textures! Crunchy, smooth, sweet, sour, chinks, tiny shreds, liquid, solid... All there is one dish. Bread and butter were excellent, always a good test in any restaurant. We also got a cassoulet, which was quite traditional in its ingredients and preparation. Two types of white bean baked with home-made sausage (terrific even by home-made sausage standards), duck on the bone, and a duck fat confit. Just laced with meat essence and schmaltz. Nothing fancy, just good! Desert was a crème brûlée. Amazing. Crème brûlée is my favorite desert, so I'm picky, and this ranked up with the best I've had. Perfect texture to the custard. Every dish wasn't amazing. The bouillabaisse was unexpectedly disappointing: hardly any broth, no taste of saffron, way too sweet, and matched with toast with aioli that was just overkill. Be warned The whole menu is this super-heavy french style. This ain't California cuisine. I don't think there was an ounce of olive oil in the joint. Everything was laced in butter and meat fat. But in the best way! Intense luxury food designed to be eaten rarely. Not what you'd dare make at home. Exactly what one wants from a celebratory dinner. Service was excellent, and what you'd expect at that price: mindful staff but not in your face. The waiter was very good at explaining the dishes. I think the value was decent for "high end" food. We got two starters, two entrees, a desert, and two glasses of wine for just over $100. We thought the total experience was well worth that. read more

Maynards is located in downtown Tucson and has it's own parking lot. There are actually 2, one on each end of the building. While I was at Maynards one thing became apparent immediately. The trains that scream through there every 20min are deafening. I was sitting outside as the weather finally allowed but the trains... Not necessarily a deal breaker in itself. The patio leaves quite a bit to be desired with no protection from the sun, no misters, and the occasional vagrant shambling about. I was happy to see a 1055 xoxo coffee stout on the menu, even if that was the only 1055 product. I ordered the sirloin while my wife ordered the fish of the day (Scottish salmon). Both the sirloin and the fish were supposed to be 6oz but the salmon was probably 4 or 5 times larger than my little cube of beef... The sirloin itself was cooked as requested but small and really was not anything special. Just a tiny cube of unseasoned beef for $28! Haha and one of the sides were fries, again for $28... Also, I tried the salmon and the consensus was that it seemed old. Something about the flavor. Garunteed I will not be returning. You really don't have to settle when you're downtown. Keep that in mind. read more

We stumbled onto Maynard's while were in town moving my daughter into University. I am so glad we did. We ended up eating three meals there during our short Tucson stay. The first night we poked our head in, were greeted kindly by the hostess and really liked the vibe and the menu . We checked over at Hotel Congress which looked really fun, too, but Maynard's Kitchen won us over so that's where we ended up. We sat at the bar where we were met Eddie, our new best friend! He gave great suggestions, showed wonderful bar knowledge and proceeded to completely erase our 6 hour drive with some beautiful hand-crafted cocktail. I'm not going to remember all the names, but I had one with watermelon and my boyfriend had a tequila one called the Heritage. Mine was good but his was transformative. The cilantro made it pop! How Eddie managed simple and complex at the same time, I still don't know! We then grazed our way through several starters. The mussels were really good and fresh but it was the tomato and grilled watermelon salad that made us sit up and take notice! Wow!!! And then, the steak tartare! It was one of the best things I've ever had. Oh, time for more cocktails. The time I had the East End and I was on Cloud 9! It was just an incredible blend of gin, honeydew (fresh) and lemon grass. So good! We had already ordered the Poutine and really didn't need it. As far as poutine goes, it was really, really good, topped with grilled foie gras. But I had already heard what the dessert was so we just had a few nibbles them moved on to the Meyer Lemon Goat Cheese Cheesecake. It was a work of art! The next morning, daughter wasn't up early, so we went off on breakfast on our own. I had remember seeing beignets on the menu so we headed back to Maynard's Kitchen. The hostess remembered us and greeted us like old friends. Eddie wasn't there but I ordered a virgin bloody mary (too busy of a day for the real deal) and again, it was incredible. I am pretty sure it had smoked paprika in it. It also had mint, cilantro, a gherkin, an olive a cucumber slice and an olive stuffed with Blue Cheese. Sounds like a lot but it hit the spot! We ordered the Beignets, that were light as cooton puffs, the red velvet pancakes a la carte that came with smoked maple syrup (wow!!!) and the baked eggs. I am not sure how they were made but we both agreed it was one of the best things we've ever tasted for breakfast. Gruyere, white wine, morel mushrooms and spinach (I think), with two poached eggs nestled all in a small cast iron skillet. Our server was Dave and he couldn't have been nicer or taken better care of us. He also let us know that not only was Eddie nice (our bartender form the night before) he was also an award winning mixologist. I can see why! Our last day, heading out of town, we stopped at Maynard's Market to pick up something to take home to my son, and seeing the already made sandwiches in the gourmet case, we decided to just have lunch there. I had brie and turkey on ciabatta and he had some sort of amazing club with bacon, pickles and who knows what else. It looked great. We grabbed a great organic hard cider to split and some chips and salsa and we were in heaven. I am sorry I don't know the name of the girl who waited on us but again, so nice and friendly. I know the Market is going to change somewhat in the near future but I hope not too much. We will definitely be back sooner rather than later! (a side note - while there for brunch, a family came in with kids. There are crayons and butcher paper on the table and plenty of good things to choose from but they left. The server was more than gracious about all of it. They looked more like the ihop type anyway and it was definitely their loss. I wouldn't have hesitated to bring my kids there!) read more

Went to dinner here with friends, and can't help but question the folks who said they had terrible service or so so food. we had an exceptional waiter, who truly knew the food, the wine, and wasn't afraid to make recommendations. loved him, very professional. The ambiance was excellent too. I do enjoy the bright lights, modern feel of some of Tucson's newer restaurants, but this was a nice break from that. For dinner at least, it was low lighting, elegant, real Tucson feel. The place was hopping, there was light jazz played live, the drinks were amazing...the food OUTSTANDING. my friends can be somewhat hard to please...and Maynard's wowed them. I'm going back today for lunch with coworkers, and hope it's as good...without the dinner menu. Have heard great things about the Cuban style pulled pork sandwich. ok...UPDATE: Cuban pork sandwich is amazing! slow roasted, melt in your mouth pork on a delicious ciabatta bread, with spicy mayonnaise, fresh cilantro, roasted jalapenos...can't go wrong! very nice to sit on the patio in the afternoon, too! read more

Nice date spot. Best filet in town. Muscles are bomb too. Interesting seasonal dishes that change throughout the year. Decent wine choices, but I still haven't found a bottle of go-to wine there. I wouldn't recommend sitting outside unless you feel the need to request that the train conductor blows its horn as it passes through the depot. read more

Very cool location in a restored train depot across from hotel Congress. A lot of thought & attention to menu & food. Recommended

Just realized I never ever wrote a review for Maynards Kitchen! I've been a fair-weather guest for about 3 years. It's one of my favorite places to celebrate birthdays, girls night out or just chill in yoga clothes because 99.9% of the time I sit front row to the best bartender ever - Eddie Pain! I normally prefer wine but when I'm here, I always let Eddie surprise me with one of his unique, refreshing and competition-worthy drinks. I have loved every appetizer and entree to date, including but not limited to mussels, steak tartare, poutine, pork shank... Great happy hour food/prices, delicious brunch (which I'm overdue for) and amazing desserts (if my tummy has room). read more

The food is okay. But the service is also okay. The fries is very salty and we asked ketchup, for which we waited till the dinner finished. There was a weird person pulled luggage to pass behind us four times, pushed us to squeeze our seats~~ Location is nice, parking is a problem. read more

Went over on my lunch hour just after they remodeled, ordered a BLT and waited...and waited...until by the time I got the sandwich, I was late back to the office. So this time, I ordered a pre-made baked potato and asked them to heat it up, figuring that should only take a minute. Wrong. I waited...and waited...and almost 20 minutes later, got my potato just in time to be late back to the office. The food is good, but it's just not a practical option for lunch hour. Before the remodel, they had sandwiches pre-packaged in the fridge. Would be great to have those back. read more

This place is TERRIFIC for Sunday brunch! It was a lovely morning in Tucson, and sitting outside under the trees, a coolish breeze and trains going by made for great atmosphere. Who would have thought that oatmeal with nuts, cream, onions and other savory additions would be good. It was better than good......great! I plan to take visitors here in the future. read more

VERY disappointed, food was good but service was rude and sarcastic! I had never been there so was trying to take it all in but apparently the girl taking food orders was out of patience and said in a loud voice, "I'm ready to help whoever is ready to order," and totally ignored my friend and I who were standing right in front of her, then she insulted me again when I asked about our drinks she says, "I only called out your name three times, they are on the coffee bar counter waiting to be picked up", the place was not busy, and not very big, it would not have been out of her way to bring the drinks over to us or have a few seconds of patience for us to make up our minds on food choice. Sorry, but I will NEVER step foot in that place again! read more

Absolutely phenomenal dining experience! Once we found parking (which wasn't too bad, just a bit of a waiting game), we were able to make it to the door. They have two rather large spaces with a shared outdoor seating area. One menu was a full dinner menu, and the other more of a soup & sandwich kind of menu. We opted for the full menu, and were able to be seated outside right as the sun was setting. It was beautiful, though it can be rather loud with all the trains coming through, but I kind of like that, actually. Between the three of us, we ended up ordering a bunch of small plates/appetizers and sharing them all as our meal. We shared: * French onion soup: Veryyyy good, really intense flavor with gruyere. * Brussels sprouts: Good - made with chunks of thick bacon rather than tiny pieces. I personally prefer them a bit charred, but they were still cooked very well. * Butternut squash bisque: Fantastic! It had a light flavor and the tarragon oil it is finished off with is just perfect. * Baked Mushroom: Great, and definitely eat with the date jam (similar to a chutney with Middle Eastern flavor). * Barrio Bruschetta: AMAZING. The bread is crispy, but not like a cracker. And, the figs with honey, Boursin, arugula, and prosciutto all together make this appetizer worth dying for. Our favorite, hands-down. * Pommes frites: Very good! Comes with a white chedder aioli that my dining-mates enjoyed. * Chef's Board: Really excellent variety! My friends devoured it. The quince paste was very good. * Bread with herbed butter: WOW. That's all. (I wasn't a fan of the Oaxaca Devil cocktail, but I think that Mezcal just isn't for me. I passed it on to a friend who finished it. I still had to take 5 or 6 sips to be absolutely sure I didn't want it. Really interesting flavor, but definitely the right amount of strong. My only other regret is not realizing they have crème brulee sooner! Definitely would have saved room. I have no doubt it's amazing...) Maynards is adding to my new-found love of Tucson!!!!! read more

Two words - Steak tar-tare. Order it. Eat it. Love it. Good cocktails also, friendly staff. Brunch also offered, and I'll be back to check that out.
