Wow! What a great experience! Wine was really good, loved the minerality of the Pinot. The Barrio Bruschetta was excellent but what was over the top was the service. Even the bus boys had a wonderful smile & made us feel at home. I must emphatically complement Max Jones. He really went out of his way to make our evening special. I'm new to Tucson & will definitely become a regular of Maynard's. Good Food, Excellent Wine & even better Service. Highly Recommended! read more

Maynards - Sandwiches Near Me - Tucson, Arizona

My wife and I had dinner at Maynard's on NYE and were really impressed. While the service was a bit slow, the food more than made up for it. And although the dish we had (cassolette) was a bit strange--it was basically a big bowl of meat: duck leg, and sausage on a bed of pulled pork and beans--the individual ingredients were amazing. The HOUSE-MADE sausage provided several enjoyable burps throughout the evening. Overall, a great experience at a wonderful Tucson gem! UPDATE: a group for friends and my wife and I visited Maynard's on June 9th. Unfortunately, the second time around was not as good as the first. There was nothing wrong with the service or the overall experience. However, the food was not a 5-star experience. I had the sirloin along with a friend, wife had the whole trout, two other friends had the pork chop, and another had the daily pasta special. My wife's dish, the trout, was very good. (See picture.) the pasta was "ok" and the sirloin plate was just "ok" as well. By far, the best dish was the pork chop. It was prepared very well, tasty, and was actually presented the best out of all those ordered. I was very surprised at how bare the plate with the sirloin was (see picture). Very sparse, containing only the steak, a pile of fries, and a handful of asparagus. It was quite amateur-looking. Overall, the dinner was "good" but not $120 good. It is highly likely I won't return for dinner, but may try out a happy hour someday in the market side. read more

I have been to Maynards Kitchen twice, and have popped into the Market to check it out once (maybe I got a coffee or tea?) but yesterday was the first time I have been to the Market for lunch and I really, really enjoyed my sandwich there. I ordered the jerk chicken sandwich, and it was SPICY. But not in the way that it was burning my mouth off, just in the way that it was a good heat throughout my entire mouth and didn't overpower the flavor of the chicken or the amazing pineapple slaw/citrus aioli dressing. I also had an unsweetened iced tea which was somehow spectacularly brewed and flavored. The space is beautifully done and feels intimate for being in the heart of downtown. I will definitely be back here and I can't wait to try their salads and other menu items! read more

I have to say that I love the location, and the being able to just pop over for a quick bite since I work close but the problem is that depending on the day things are a hit or miss. Another constant negative is some of the staff are just not friendly. Things that I've had that were great: pork reuben and the noodle salad. The pork was undoubtedly smoked and so tasty! The noodle salad has a great light dressing and you get your choice of protein. So flavorful with all the veggies and cold noodles. Another time I tried the Poutine and I found the gravy tasteless and unappealing even in presentation. It was also very salty, which is never a plus for me. I was left bobbing for the cheese curds at the bottom of the dish! They serve giant cookies in the typical flavors- chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin and peanut butter, but sometimes they are bricks and other times right on. They serve homemade chips with their sandwiches but they are usually over cooked. My coworker recently paid $9 for a monstrosity that was called a salad. Basically it was a large heart of mini romaine with some ham, blue cheese and dressing . I urged her to take it back but she kept it. The lettuce looked somewhat wilted and the salad was altogether sad. They've got some improvements to make, needless to say. read more

I was underwhelmed. It might have been my misunderstanding the menu, but the pork belly was bland. The lentil topping was skimpy and bland. The green chile sauce was two thin slices of green chiles. The potatoes were three extremely thin slices of small potatoes highly soaked in vinegar. The Caesar salad was also bland. The waiter said the croutons (actually crumbs) were anchovy infused. I couldn't taste it. No Parmigiana, no garlic, no anchovies. But you do get to pay a lot for it. read more

Fun Happy Hour. Historic with lots of choo chew trains passing nearby. Happy hour is worth taking advantage of daily. The pizza is really good. If you like the wine / beverage while dining on the patio, you can usually find it in the market. read more

Great ambiance and always outstanding service. Dining at Maynards always feels like a special occasion. A lot of times I'll ask questions about the menu (not a picky eater, I just like learning stuff) and the wait staff, on numerous occasions demonstrated a deep understanding of the food and it's origins. The oysters are always a favorite and the lamb is good, too. read more

My absolute favorite restaurant in Tucson!!! Olivia and Jr have been rockstars and the entire staff is friendly and professional! The Chef is amazing and could easily rival the Michelin Star restaurants in Europe!!! Truly a hidden gem in Tucson! I would highly recommend joining the wine club and taking advantage of the paired wine dinners which are special events and a rare occasion to dress up in Tucson. read more

Dinner tonight at Maynards was a beautiful example of how amazing a dining experience can be when a restaurant is firing on all cylinders. Outstanding food, courteous and attentive service, and beautiful scenery -- when this place is on, it is on fire. With three completely different dining areas, it covers every kind of environment you could want. Grab a table inside or sit at the bar and soak up the stylish atmosphere; sit outside on the patio and enjoy the beautiful lights and the passing trains; or get a table upstairs and enjoy the a more calm and classic ambiance. I can't remember the last time I had such varied options in the same venue. Today, I opted for a quiet night and so my guest and I sat in the cozy, brightly lit upstairs room. We felt more like sharing a bunch of appetizers than indulging in their delicious sounding entrees, and so we started off with the poutine (fries, short rib gravy, and cheese curds). The gravy was rich and beefy, and the chopped tarragon sprinkled on top added a lovely sweetness. I doubt this is how most Canadians do their poutine, but I've never been much of a traditionalist. I only care that food tastes good, and this plate of fries was excellent. We then got the steak tartare, which was smooth like butter and seasoned evenly. The homemade potato chips that come with it are nice and light, and the watercress on the side helps balance out the slight salty flavor of the tartare and chips. The last appetizer was the Prince Edward Island mussels in a Pernod, braised bacon, and fennel broth. The mussels were tender -- not even the least bit chewy -- and the broth was killer. I'm now convinced the combination of smoky bacon and sweet fennel needs to become a more frequent occurrence in my life. I went through two helpings of bread soaking up all the leftover juices. We finished off the meal with their chocolate fondue for two. This was the only misstep of the meal, because the goat cheesecake bites that came with it were still frozen on the inside. Had they been cut smaller, the hot chocolate might have had the chance to defrost them. The accompanying cookies and the chocolate itself were really good, though. Service was on the ball tonight. Our server, Robert, was very nice, and the entire serving staff was enthusiastically on top of everything. Our water glasses were rarely ever empty, and plates were never removed prematurely. The food might have taken a few minutes longer than I would have expected at a different restaurant, but considering how far removed the upstairs dining room was from the kitchen, it was understandable. Great experience over all. I wish the dessert hadn't been frozen, but seeing as how they apparently no longer have a dedicated pastry chef (didn't see the previous pastry chef's name on the dessert menu tonight), I can cut them some slack. They delivered where it counted, and that's what matters most. read more

I am finding out that a lot of places downtown have happy hour, not ony during the week, but on Saturday too. Maynard's is one of them. Some of their food (all $7) and drink ($7 for specialty drinks, $3 beer, $5 wine) happy hour offerings: Duck poutine - hand cut fries covered with gravy made from duck fat and topped with cheese curds. There seemed to be a sprinkling of crisp duck skin cracklings for texture. As you can imagine, this dish is very rich and very tasty. I suggest sharing it, if there are duck lovers in your group. Burger - with housemade aioli, pickled onions and all the other fixin's. My wife seemed to enjoy it. Maybe I'll try it on a future visit, but this visit, for me, was all about the poutine. Potato pizza - Our niece was the other person in our party. She was interested in trying this because another local place has a really good one. According to her, Maynard's version did not measure up. I got the leftovers, tried it later and found it to be very heavy on rosemary. They offer other pizzas like sausage or pepperoni that they put their own spin on. For drinks we tried: Texas Mule - their take on the Moscow Mule.... and a good one at that. Manhattan - straightforward but done well. Sangria - red or white with lots of fresh fruit Beers - 7 or 8 taps with something for all different tastes. Wine - this seems to be the best deal as most of the regular prices seems be $10 or more Good prices at happy hour and their creative take on dishes and drinks makes it someplace I'll definitely keep in mind for happy hour or dinner for a special occasion. read more

Took my girlfriend on a date here a few months back. My mother stopped in and had dinner on a business meeting and received some sub-par service so I decided to write a review. On my lone visit, we were seated right away...off to a good start. Our waiter took 6-8 minutes to find our table, no big deal though. My girlfriend (23 y.o.) ordered a martini and our waiter asked for her ID, fair request by my book. I then ordered an alcoholic beverage for myself and no ID was requested...hmm, that's interesting, I wonder why my girlfriend was 'carded' and I (25 y.o.) wasn't? Well, let's ask: "So why didn't you ask for my ID?" I said in a playful tone. "We don't card anyone that looks a day over 30 here at Maynards Sir." Proclaimed our waiter. I mean, I was rocking a fairly dirty mustache being that it was the middle of November but...over thirty?! Okay that's fine. Our drinks took about 10 minutes and our food another 40. I will say however, that the train whizzing right by our table and BARELY being able to hear it was a pretty cool experience. The food was great but for the price I would expect it to be. Also had to leave the restaurant, go around the corner and up the stairs to find a restroom. Service: B- Food: A Alcohol: A Price: C Location: A- Parking: C- GPA: 3.04 = B read more

Another highly-rated Tucson place that completely baffles me.... We were in the neighborhood on a lovely day and thought we'd check it out for lunch. We sat on the patio. As is often pointed out, there are very few places in Tucson where you can eat outside and an 80 degree spring day seemed perfect. For location and atmosphere, I'd give it a 10. Alas, the food and service is a different story. It was about 3:00 p.m. and there were just a few tables. I had the Cuban sandwich. It was OK. A bit expensive, but acceptable. My wife, unfortunately, ordered the large spinach salad for $8.00. What she got was a small salad plate (!) with some spinach on it, a slice of red onion and a vinaigrette. The spinach did not even fill up the tiny side salad plate. There were none of the usual ingredients that make up a spinach salad. We both just stared at the plate, not sure what to say. Unfortunately, the waitress had disappeared back inside. The restaurant was not busy at all. After ten minutes or so, the waitress finally reappeared. I called her over and it was usual clueless service scene that you get in Tucson. I asked her, "Is this supposed to look like this?" thinking that perhaps it was just an honest mistake and they had brought the small (and presumably side salad) by mistake. She just stares at me unsmiling. "What's wrong with it?" Given the circumstances, I found that question bizarre. I told her the portion was extremely small for an entree salad. She left and reappeared ten minutes later. Here's the funny part. What she brought back was a plate with maybe a quarter cup more of spinach on it, which she sat down on the table and left without saying a word. My wife was disgusted at that point and we just decided to leave. Once again, I have to wait about ten minutes for the waitress. I order the check. She brings the check and - ignoring the uneaten tiny little plate of spinach leaves - asks "how was everything?" Our bill for this fiasco with 2 glasses of wine was north of $30. Ridiculous. In a larger community, a place like this would be driven out of business in 3 months. Here, these kinds of places seem to thrive. It's sad. read more

Very disappointing. We were a party of four. We weren't very hungry and each couple decided to split a hamburger. We ordered one bowl of French onion soup per couple and one burger per couple. The stated menu price for a burger was $16. The server ask us if we would like cheese on our burgers. Each couple said yes. The server then ask us if we wanted mushrooms. One couple said yes. The server then ask us if we wanted bacon on our burgers. Both couples said yes. One couple ask for their burger to be medium-well and the second couple ask that their burger be prepared well done. Both burgers arrived somewhere between rare and medium-rare. Both burgers arrived with hardly any bacon. Just a few small pieces. Both burgers were served on very dry buns. The one burger that should have contained mushrooms - did. However, there were just two or three pieces of thin sliced mushrooms on that entire burger. When we ordered, we informed the server that we wanted to split the burgers. One burger for one couple, one burger for the other couple. When we placed our order, were we not informed that it would cost us two dollars to split each burger. Nor were we informed that adding bacon would be an additional two dollars. Adding mushrooms would be an additional two dollars. Adding cheese would be an additional two dollars. Two dollars each for add-ons is a little over the top. If a restaurant is going to charge that much for the add-ons, the add-ons should have been there in body as well as spirit. Also, we should have been informed that a $16 burger was being upgraded to a $24 burger. I am surprised they didn't charge us two dollars additional, per couple, for the large number of flies that were part of the ambience. We were continually harassed by the buzzing beasts. The person (not our server) that delivered the food to our tables, was a pompous ass. Each time he delivered something to the table we acknowledged him and said thank you; but his nose was too high and he was too busy staring in the distance to even acknowledge that we were sitting at the table. We joked amongst ourselves about the consistency between the way he acknowledged our presence and the manner in which an undertaker probably acknowledges his guests who are lying down on the marble table. With emphasis, I can assure the readers of this review that we will not return. The setting was nice, but the food and service was far short of acceptable. Additionally, the pricing for what we received was absolutely absurd! Dry undercooked food with overpriced add-ons that were scarcely present was ludicrous. Frankly, I am of the opinion that this business won't survive - if what we experienced is the norm. It will not disappoint me to see it go. In short. I believe they took advantage of us and provided a very poor product and poor service in return for far too many of our hard earned dollars. I can also share that there was a strong impression of arrogance coming from the staff. From the hostess, to the manager (who was present when we arrived), to the servers. When I have authored reviews in the past, that were less than flattering to food-service establishments, I have occasionally received a request to return as their guest to give them another opportunity to get it right. Maynards can offer me free food for a year and I wouldn't return. They don't deserve my business, free or not. The only reason Maynards is receiving 2 stars from me, rather than one, is because the setting and ambience is very pleasant. That's a positive, because modification of restaurant infrastructure is the most difficult and expensive shortcoming to overcome. Changing out staff, getting rid of flies, and getting realistic with their pricing is far easier - and that's my recommendation. ----- FOLLOW UP COMMENT BY STEVE: No drinks (water only). 2 bowls of French Onion soup + 2 Hamburgers = about $70 (before tip)! Maynard's what has happened? Went for Happy Hour on Saturday, greeted by staff, very friendly. No music (apparently internet issues) and an extremely limited bar menu, both libations and snacks. The focaccia was amazing, the steak tartar was half cheese (!), and not good, and the melon and prosciutto consisted of one slice of meat and about a 1/4 cup diced melon, barely enough for a Barbie doll. Wine choices good, draft beer not. I frequented Maynard's since it's opening in 2014, enjoyed the establishment under different owners and hoped that after Covid, it would reopen to it former glory. The market remains closed, which is a shame since many a fun afternoon was spent on the patio, both with market and main Maynard's food and drink. read more

The most disastrous all-around dining experience we've had in quite some time. Recent--quiet--Friday night, with another couple who had chosen Maynard's based on hearsay. Our young son dropped out late and we were four instead of five; yet, staff was too inflexible to let us dine at any of the empty tables downstairs. "You're 4, but you were 5, and 5 or over can't dine downstairs." Empty downstairs tables seemed to mock us and a look at reservations confirmed we were getting the restaurant-with-airs shaft. Hence, we were banished to Siberia--an upstairs bare-bones room, no ambiance whatsoever. The hostess cheerily said: "Follow me upstairs." We trooped up approx 30 narrow, high stairs to find at the landing top--an elevator that easily could have been used. Of course, at this point we should have high-tailed it out, but...things have got to get better, right? Service was absolutely horrible. Insulting our intelligence, we kept being told "the kitchen is busy, stacked up, not quite ready for the season..." Empty tables upstairs and down spoke otherwise. Our orders were relatively uncomplicated. Mussels were puny and barely tasteful. Am told snapper main courses were decent; nothing to write home about. Veggies, potatoes, salads..all cost extra. Carrots/parsnips tasted like they were barely out of the freezer. All served with aura of pretension and sense staff could care less (not even a gesture of complimentary item made). Skipped dessert; between lousy service, food and attitude, could not wait to get out. Not even 8:30 pm and upstairs and down practically deserted. First, though, spouse needed to refresh. Upstairs, down and back again--no one had told her she would need to get A CODE from hostess. So here is my CODE for Maynard's: * eeks! Methinks not! read more

"The weather is perfect" she said. "Yes", I agreed, "it is". "Why did you bring me here?" she asked. "You know I don't like to try anything new". "Maynard's Market and Kitchen got very good ratings on Yelp and I wanted to try it". "I researched Maynard's for 4 hours last night so I already know what I'm getting" she said. "What are you getting?" I asked. "I am getting the Steak and Frites" she said. " It is an 8oz Certified Angus Beef skirt steak, maitre d' hotel butter, house-made French fries" "Wow, you really did your homework" I said. "Do you know what you want?" she asked. I think I will try the Cuban Pork" I said. "It is a sandwich with Ham, Gruyere, pickles, jalapenos, caramelized onions, lime juice, cilantro" I said "It's awesome, though I could do without the cilantro" ... Later on... "Hey, I think the train is coming" I said. "Where do you think it is coming from? She asked. "It could be coming from anywhere" I said. "How is your steak?" "It is perfect" she said. "I love this place and I love you for taking me here. You're the greatest" ...and later yet... "Hey, did you see that guy?" she asked. "No I didn't, who was it?" I replied. "It looked like someone famous. He looked like he was in one of those hair bands in the 80's" she said. "Cool" I said. "Do the mountains look like white elephants?" I asked "You are an idiot" she said. read more

Clarification: this is for Maynard's Kitchen, not the market. If I could give zero stars for Maynards, I would. We went in expecting a relatively quick meal, and given the reputation of Maynards, a delicious one as well. Unfortunately, this was not the case. There were so many issues- both with the service and with the food- that made it one of the worst dining experiences in recent memory for our entire group. It seemed like no one who worked there had any clue how to run a restaurant, or how to cook (with the exception of our server who was very nice but completely overwhelmed). We checked in with the hostess and told that it would be 20 minutes for an outdoor table (specifically asked for outdoor). No problem! We went to the bar to get a drink. We were brusquely told to move to the "open space" at the other end of the bar, which was odd, but not a big deal. We were directed to a space piled with dirty dishes and uneaten food. The dishes were eventually cleared, but a mess of spilled syrup remained in front of us. Then we noticed that there were there ants crawling all over the bar. Gross! Service at the bar was terrible. It took 5-10 minutes for the bartender to even come over for the first time and drinks took another 10 minutes (the bar was nearly empty). It just seemed extremely disorganized. When we needed to close out to go to our table, it took yet another 5-10 minutes for them to run the credit card. We made sure to ask for an outdoor table when checking in, as we were there specifically because of the outdoor seating. After waiting 25 minutes for an outdoor table, we were led to an indoor table. When we reminded them that we were waiting for outside, they told us they were "all booked up outside" and that there weren't any tables. After back and forth we did get outside, but why initially tell us that it "wouldn't be a problem"? And why were there 3 empty tables outside? After a long wait for food with little attention to coffee/water refills, we finally got the food. It was truly terrible. The omelet was overcooked to oblivion and was hard and rubbery. The ham was too salty and the gruyere tasteless. The potatoes were cold. Others at our table somehow fared worse. The "baked eggs" were just eggs in a tasteless, heavy cream goop. It's brunch food. It's not rocket science. It took forever for them to bus the table. As we were in a hurry, we had to get up and physically track down our server for the bill after asking for it once. By this time we were so frustrated we couldn't go on without saying something. We grabbed another server and told her how upset we were and said we had a "miserable experience". She looked at us, didn't say anything, and walked away. No offer of assistance or attempt to get a manager. Not ONE word. Insane! All in all, it took over 2 hours for us to eat an awful meal (with eating taking about 10 minutes of that). Was this an off day with new staff? Is this how it always is? In any case- don't waste your time, money or patience. Go somewhere else. read more

Wow, what a little gem! Upon moving our daughter into the dorm at UA we wanted to have one last great family meal. I'd heard recently about Maynard's so made a reservation on Open Table and two hours later, there we were. Warning...parking is an absolute pain. they would be well served to secure a lot and provide valet for their customers. the restaurant is beautifully done...dark lighting, wood, metal. It's kind of fun to watch the people getting on the Amtrak next door. Our server was a nice young man that was a bit too eager. If I don't ask for recommendations, assume I know what I want and what all the ingredients on the menu are. We may just be taking some time to devise a game plan. Anyway, I wanted to order a drink right away, but he skipped off to soon. Luckily, the sommelier came by soon afterward. An older gentlemen in a bit of a frumpy suit, but he enjoyed talking about wine. he also wanted to sell us a bottle, but we weren't planning on imbibing that much. my husband also asked him to please tell our server i wanted a cocktail, so he somewhat unwillingly took the order. moments later, wine and cocktail appeared. the Maynard's Manhattan used a beautiful vanilla and orange infused Buffalo Trace Bourbon. mmmm..... we started with a platter of poutine (cheese curd, french fry, gravy combo from French Quebec). well, this was unlike any other. Crispy pomme frites, locally made white cheese curds, duck confit, bits of foie gras, duck cracklings, all smothered in duck gravy. wow wow wow, was that good. daughter had a lovely bistro salad with poached egg, frisee and bacon, followed by a spectacular tomato soup redolent of pernod and fennel. my sardine/potato/lettuce was quite tasty but could have been better served by a bit less dressing. hubby's summer cassoulet with sausage and duck leg was so incredibly good...luckily we had leftovers to eat a day later... dessert was a scrumptious meyer lemon goat cheese cake with rosemary whipped cream, and a killer cheese plate. so nice to have a cheese plate with selections that you can't find just anywhere (hear that all you parmesan, brie, standard blue cheese plate folks?!). we had humboldt fog, a crazy good roquefort, a cowboy creamery goat and our favorite, epoisses. we're so happy that we've found a fave dining spot in tucson at the beginning of our daughter's college career. read more

Oh dear! We've now got to LA prices without the food, service or sophistication to warrant such prices. What started out as a very good bistro type restaurant, with appropiate pricing, has suddenly taken on amusing airs and graces. Food now seems less important than patrons' posing; service seems less important than being cool; keeping reservations seems less important than overbooking. As an award, this restaurant has the worst service, bar none. This writer's companion wrote to the owners just after opening pointing out the problems with the service. She received no response. I guess they don't care or understand because on each subsequent visit things only got worse. read more

I had a bad experience at Maynards my first time there yesterday. Arrived for Sunday brunch in a party of three, was told there would be a 20 minute, wait, so we had a drink at the bar. When it had been nearly 30 minutes (and after pretty mediocre service at the bar, frankly), we inquired about why it was taking so long, but were told we were next. We were seated 5 minutes later. Rough start, but nothing to complain about so far. Our table on the patio was dirty when we were seated there, but it was in the sun, so we asked the hostess if we could sit at a nearby table in the shade (it was also dirty, but we said we'd wait for it to be cleared). She said that would be fine, but when a larger group complained of the sun and wanted to move there after we had already asked to sit there, she told them they could and told us that, actually, we couldn't sit there after all. We were finally seated in the shade, but after 10 minutes without being so much as greeted by a server, we asked a server why we hadn't been helped. He said he would. 5 minutes later, he returned to tell us that our table hadn't been assigned a server at all, which is why we were being ignored. He took our order, and 20 minutes later (!!!) our food was ready. Mine was cold. The most frustrating part of the visit was when we called over the manager to complain about the bad service (we had to call him over). We told him about our experience and he said he was sorry. He did not apologize profusely, offer any compensation, and it seemed that he wanted to leave to go do other things as quickly as possible. No explanation, such as, "sorry, we're really backed up in the kitchen", was given. Me and my brunch company did not feel welcome at that restaurant. I will not be back to Maynards anytime soon. read more

I seem to laugh every time someone calls this place "My Nards." Its "disdigg," arrogant quality just doesn't get old. "We should go over to My Nards," etc. But it's true, we should. And do. This place appears to be the area's new favorite bar to get pre and/or post-show drinks when going to the Rialto or Congress (especially if you're in the mood for a change from Congress' lobby/Tap Room or The District). I haven't tried the food, but the bar's cocktails are fantastic and the market's sandwiches are simple, ready-to-eat and affordable (I do wish they'd ease up on the mayo, though, it makes an otherwise nice, light sandwich a total fatty boomba pig-out). There's tons of wine in there, too. If you're a fan of fresh basil, definitely hit the bar to try the Caprese martini. It's like a little boozey salad in a glass, all pretty and garnished with basil, cheese and tomato. They even drizzle the glass with balsamic tastiness. So creative. If you're scared of parking downtown, it's really not a hassle. The free gravel lot just eastish of the 6th Avenue underpass pretty much always has space and is a 30 second walk from Maynards and Hotel Congress. It's reassuring that there's always cops hanging out in their cars right across the street, keeping a watchful eye on the area's activities. Get downtown! It looks like there's some kinks to work out in this new place, but hopefully it'll stick around and flourish -- it's helping keep our city's interesting little heart beating. read more

Why do we keep going back to Maynards? Yes the food is great but what keeps me going back is that the staff is always helpful, polite, and attentive. It's the feeling of being welcomed that makes us like this place so much. The bartenders are always willing to help you choose a beer, cocktail or wine. Added bonus, they have a sommelier on staff so you can ask away with any questions of a wine's characteristics or pairings. They offer a nice bar/late night menu, perfect for us night owls craving something more than a Los Betos burrito. The pizzas on the late night menu are perfect to share with another person and along with a salad. I recommend the butter lettuce salad. The figs offer a nice contrast to the perfectly salted ham and tangy hazelnut dressing. A good sign- seeing a restaurant's own employees eating there after their shifts end. That means the food is well prepared (and not to mention speaks to the cleanliness of the kitchen, yay cleanliness!). This makes me very confident that the restaurant takes what they do serious. I could keep going on and on about Maynard's but I won't. I will say that I have never had an unpleasant experience at this restaurant and I recommend it to anyone visiting downtown Tucson for a nice dinner and a great ambiance. read more

One of my favorite spots in Tucson! The Restaurant: A romantic and dreamy atmosphere in a historic train depot. They told me at my place of employment to be a "women's libber" & not rely on any Prince Charming coming along to take care of me. Whatever...when he comes, I want him to propose to me at Maynard's. Fabulous "French-inspired" American cuisine. Sunday Brunch is excellent! I love the creamy white polenta -- delish! Now that the weather has cooled down a bit, you can still enjoy it outside with the toasty patio heaters. The Bar: Great Happy Hour, Monday-Saturday, from 3 - 6 pm. It's hard to find establishments with Happy Hour on the weekends! They feature $7 bar eats, and 1/2 off glasses of wine, wells, and drafts. They usually have a couple of cocktail specials, as well. On my last visit, I was pleased with a cocktail called, 'Tequilas' Dirty Sister' (resposado, raspberry habenero shrub, grapefruit, and bacanora). It had a nice kick! The Market: After a brief construction hiatus (although it seemed like an eternity to me), they re-opened at the beginning of November. The first items I grabbed upon their return were sautéed Brussels sprouts w/ grapes (from the deli case) and a bottle of Pinot Grigio to go. Good choices! I'm still making my way through trying some of the items in the newly designed market, but I have especially loved the Croque Monsieur (Madame with a sunny egg) and the raspberry cheesecake in a jar. If you return the jar, you get a $1 off your next purchase. Available seating has expanded in this new layout, with more space to dine-in. I often come here just for grab-and-go meals, though. I love the take out salads & sandwiches (kale Caesar, superfruit grain, portobello w/goat cheese sand, etc....YUM!). You can also find Isabella's Ice Cream and Tucson Tamale Co.'s tamales in the freezer. The Wine Club: 2 bottles a month (1 red, 1 white), 25% off cases, free monthly tastings, and discounts on wine dinners -- $60 for a 3 month membership or $230 for the year. The Sommelier here is so very warm and friendly! Check it out! read more

Great restaurant. The food was excellent with a fantastic wine selection, priced for every budget. The service was outstanding, the staff was attentive without the feel of being over waited. My fiance enjoyed our night out in Tucson. If anything else, good food and wine made our night. read more

For some reason I could not find the entrance to the restaurant! my wife and I went here for our anniversary, and ended up in the Market half of Maynard's Kitchen+Market. There was a big group sitting down at a large table, and a couple smaller deli-style tables which were empty. The look on my wife's face said "You did not just bring me to eat here on our anniversary." I nervously asked the lady at the counter where the restaurant was, and she pointed me around the corner. Relief! Once we were seated I knew my marriage was saved. FAST Review Food (4/5) - Steak Tartare- first time eating, and it's fun to eat raw beef. Have had raw lamb before, so wasn't much of a surprise. Duck 2 Ways - was the best duck I've ever had (I've eated it like twice, since before Maynard's I had an aversion to mallards). Boulliabiasse - wife had this, like a seafood stew...pretty good. Ambiance (5/5) Dark, romantic. Good for couples. Just don't be in a rush to go to the bathroom, cuz its outside the restaurant and up the stairs. Good exercise tho. Service (5/5) Was prompt and courteous. Total Impression (5/5) - No complaints for our anniversary dinner. Note: Maynard's supposedly offers validated parking for the Pennington St garage. Beware, they are apparently notorious for giving you expired tickets to use. My wife and I found out the hard way, and ended up just paying the 3$ or whatever it was, since it was to much hassle to walk all the way back to get a valid ticket. read more

Food and service are good! The patio atmosphere is very nice, specially with this weather and some wine. Everything we order for dinner was good, but personally, i like the brunch menu better! read more

This place was at one time, the best place to eat downtown. It was just a little pricey. It is still pricey: but instead of meals, you get a snack. What I ordered: Vegan Platter ($14) What I got: 3 pieces of Asparagus, and maybe an ounce of mixed vegetables. I was in a meeting so I decided to express my concern when I returned to work. I called and a message was left for the Manager Marissa. Marissa returns my call a week later with: "so sorry, better luck next time." Yeah, I do not think there will be a next time for me at Maynards. read more

Maynards is probably one of the best all around places in downtown Tuscon. Great little coffee shop with nice selection of food in the morning. The market goodies (nice wine selection) just makes it a fun place to grab a coffee and morning burrito (sausage burrito was huge but delicious). For dinner you can head over to the restaurant area. I went on a Friday afternoon and although this is a place you definitely want to make reservations for, they can usually squeeze a small party in at a table or the bar. Service was superb. I had the hand made pasta in a broth sauce which was fantastic. They had a band on the patio playing which by early evening was covered in shade and quite pleasant. If you are downtown and looking to impress or be impressed, Maynards will do quite nicely. read more

If you love French food (and who doesn't love French food?), you must eat at Maynard's. I think this is the best French menu in town. Arguably, Janos has the better culinary talent, but his menu infuses a lot of Southwest flavors with French techniques. Maynard's has a purer French influence. Things I have eaten there (and I recommend all of them): Raclette-served with potatoes, sliced meats, nuts, and apple Fall Mushrooms-chantrelle mushrooms, green beans, and egg Choucroute garnie-a French style sauerkraut with sausage, pork chop, and pork belly ***Do not take your kids. This is a date spot! read more

I've been a regular at Maynard's Market for years. The new Market looks great, but they seem disorganized and disinterested in fixing that. You order at one register (except when they tell you to order at another one around the corner that you can't see when you walk in), and depending on what you order, you might pick it up at the end of the bar, or maybe around the corner, but no one will tell you that. And they might call your name when it's ready, or they might not. And however it goes down, it will be your fault because you're square. The food is over-priced (of course, it's Maynards) and there aren't a ton of options for vegetarians, but for the most part, the food is good, and the coffee is great. The salted caramel brownies are AMAZING. Yesterday, I went in for one, and there was a big fresh pan of them behind the counter. Choirs of angels! But instead, they gave me one of the old, hard, dry ones from days ago, sitting there, dessicating in the case. Really?? I probably won't continue going as often as I used to, but don't count on them giving a damn about keeping customers. It's all about looking good, baby. read more

We came here for dinner this evening and was absolutely delicious! Truly I was blown away. I ordered a fish special at market price and couldn't believe how yummy it was. Can't recall the name of the fish but it was in the grouper family. It tasted very identical to crab meat. I had my one year old daughter with and couldn't get her to eat anything, but she loved my fish! Service was friendly. Love it here, but it is pricey! $100+ for two people, however every penny was well spent. read more

Maynards - Fish special @ market price today. Grouper type fish, tasted just like crab meat. Best dish I've tasted in a long long time. - Sandwiches Near Me - Tucson, Arizona

Went back a couple Saturday's ago with a friend, just to sit at the bar and have more cocktails before calling it a night. The bartender was amazing!! He made our drinks specifically as requested and made sure to taste them so that they were up to his standards before serving as we asked for many specific things (okay, so he probably didn't have to taste it, but kudos for doing so) ... and they were oh so good. He even added fresh vanilla to our espresso martini's. mmmm. The kitchen was almost closing when we decided we needed to have something to snack on. The manager said that we could still order their pizza's. The problem was my friend had given pizza up for Lent. When the manager heard this he said.. No problem! We can throw something else together for you... how bout some bruschetta? Heck ya! The bruschetta was amazing. And as we finished it we finally figured out we were eating lentils... and they tasted really great! (My friend does NOT like lentils and had she known beforehand she probably would not have gotten it)... It is possible some of the amazing cocktails and wine clouded my judgement, however... we closed down the bar.. and left extremely happy. So in my head... it was great and I would do it all again. read more

This place is solid. Been meaning to eat here for a while; this weird, rainy night was a perfect time. Maynard's is very loud and very expensive. The quality of the food is good. My fiance had a giant steak, which was melt-in-your-mouth delicious and cooked precisely the way he ordered it (hooray!). He also ordered the pommes frites, which were OK. He liked that they were served with mayonnaise, although this is clearly an affront to all that is holy. The waiter recommended a particular glass of Bordeaux, which we both enjoyed immensely. I chose the trout, which was a special. Between the noise, and the wine, and the fact that I wasn't paying too much attention, I can't really say what it came with, but it was a lot. There was a sort of raw salad with some fancy greens and a few pomegranate seeds and something that may or may not have been squash, and some sort of cooked vegetables. I have no idea what they were--I think he said something about "brussel sprout greens"? Anyway, they were delicious, surprisingly so. There was a giant slice of mushroom--a portobello?--on top of that. The fish was cooked just right, and sat on a bed of beans and squash. The beans could probably have been cooked a bit longer. It was a lot of food. Also, it was sort of unexpected: all the flavors that were put together surprised me. Nothing tasted the way I expected it to taste. The concept of freshness really shone through. The waiter mentioned that they had just switched over to the winter menu, and it was definitely winter food: heavy and warm. I could not finish my plate. Service is sort of relaxed. Our water glasses were kept filled, and we received a second serving of the very nice sourdough bread with herbed butter. Apparently we were in there for almost 2 hours, but it certainly didn't feel that long. read more

My pork chop was raw, waiter rude, and I put that I was here for a special occupation via open table and got absolutely nothing. Heard great things...so disappointed read more

I stumbled into this place on a recent business trip and will seriously consider a return to Tucson just to dine here again. Glass for glass one of the best wine lists in an American restaurant I've visited to date, and that is not to mention the esoteric bottle selection that caught me completely off guard. I may be biased, as their Somm- Lars - was a fellow Londoner at one point. This guy has clearly done his homework, and was a pleasure to talk with about their list. I ended up with their bouillabaisse paired with a Furmint and the filet with a Les Petite Roches by Charles Joguet.... Who offers these wines by the glass?! Good food, phenomenal wine, great experience. read more

Located inside a renovated train depot you'll find Maynard's Kitchen. The interior decor is upscale, and the outdoor patio is spacious. The menu changes seasonally, so the ingredients are always fresh and you'll see a new dish on the menu almost every time you dine, making Maynard's Kitchen a great place to take someone special to a night out. Right across from Maynard's Kitchen is Maynard's Market which features the same quality food, but caters to the busy downtown crowd. Recently remodeled, the Market now has pizza, sandwiches, soups, salads as well as breakfast to order. They have wine displayed on three walls, and two cold boxes full of beer and chilled wines. They even have a small ice-cream freezer to cure a sweet tooth.. I recommend the breakfast burrito and the cheddar biscuit sandwich for breakfast. For lunch or dinner I recommend the portobello sandwich, but ask for it hot rather than cold. It makes all the difference. I also recommend any of their pizzas. I've had them all but the one that stands out above the rest if the mushroom pizza with goat cheese and arugula. YUM! Oh, and did I mention the Bakery case? It's almost impossible for me to leave without a Red Velvet cupcake. I honestly cannot explain how I've gone so long without writing a review of Maynard's. It is my favorite restaurant downtown. They really have something for everyone with fine dining, casual dining and the wine club. Keep up the good work Maynard's! read more

I wanted to enjoy my meal at Maynards, mainly because I love the atmosphere at this restaurant. However my dinner was pretty sub par. I had the Pork Saltimbocca, which really missed the mark. The pork cutlet, while cooked well, was incredibly bland. The lack of flavor in tandem with the braised greens made for a rather odd taste. The house pulled mozzarella on the heirloom tomato was also too chewy and did little to add to the flavor profile of the meal. My cocktail, The Cooler, was very good however and quite refreshing. We sat on the patio which was nice, but the trains passing so frequently made conversing a bit difficult. I will definitely go back and just order something different next time. Big shout out to our waitress who was awesome! read more
