Within the past month while dining at Maynard's Market, I have discovered a miraculous version of one of your condiments: your ranch dressing. This proclamation may seem hyperbolic, as ranch is often regarded as a rather plebian, low-brow condiment; often served on sad iceberg lettuce, or with fried chicken tenders. However, after enjoying your ranch with a grilled cheese sandwich and french fries (both amazing in their own right), it was as if I had never had ranch dressing before. It was amazing. At first, I thought it was an overreaction on my part, but after a few of my friends sampled it, they too agreed it was the best ranch they had ever tried. Not to be under-estimated, these friends were from the Midwest, so they are veritable ranch dressing experts. We were trying to articulate what made the ranch dressing so uniquely wonderful, but the specific ingredient escaped us. It was just so much better than other ranches. First, I would like to congratulate your staff in creating such a magnificent condiment. Second, I request that you either 1) bottle this in larger quantities, so it can be shared on a wider scale; or 2) send this recipe, so we can come to understand the source of this ranch's gloriousness. I look forward to visiting the Market in the near future. And yes, ranch dressing does deserve a post like this. read more

Awkward experience and below average food at a very high price. We walked into the newly remodeled Maynard's Market and were greeted by staff that seemed to be as confused as why we were there as we were trying to eat there. It was 1pm and the place was nearly empty. We walked up to the counter cash register to order, only to be moved along to another section to order. At the location we were directed to, the employee seemed confused that we wanted to order and pay for food. We bought a salad, ordered a margherita pizza, a cheese sandwich, and their "morning calm" sandwich, then looked for a place to sit. There was only one table large enough for more than two people, and it was the only occupied table in the place (one person) so we decided to sit outside even though it was a bit chilly. Outside it was completely unclear if the tables were for the Market, or for the Kitchen, that was until the Kitchen staff served another table near us, giving us the stink eye for sitting there. Side note, they are owned by the same group... Our food arrived. It took some time, more than it would seem necessary for a pizza and a sandwich they were making with a panini press. The pizza was described as "Red sauce, fresh mozzarella, fresh basil", though it came with whole sliced tomatoes and spinach on it. Needless to say, my daughters wouldn't touch it. I tried a slice, it was also burnt. The "Morning Calm" is really just a pretentious corned beef, cabbage, and hot mustard sandwich. Intended to be served warm, the outside was cooked in the panini press, but the corned beef was cold. We ate what we could, though the food was so bad we didn't finish anything. Then were were confused, should be clean our own table, or leave it for the wait staff that were giving us the evil stare? Looking around and seeing no trash cans meant for more than cigarettes, we left our trash. Sorry. My daughters were quite upset that the pizza was not to the description on the menu, so I promised to buy them ice cream to make it up. We walked up to the ice cream counter, but all the ice cream was covered in freezer burn. Not a good look in an open display. I promised them I'd take them to the Hub instead (great place!) I then went to buy a coffee and cookie for my wife. Of course the staff was again confused that we were trying to buy something, we were sent to a different counter again (the counter is a big rectangle, so we just kept walking around and around it, with little room to walk.) I went to the coffee area, and asked for an Americano and a chocolate cookie. The person took our payment, then disappeared. The cookie was directly in front of me in the display counter, and the coffee machine was next to it. We stood there for several minutes waiting for someone to notice we had no cookie or coffee. I then left. My wife must have wanted that cookie quite badly, she stayed. She received her cookie and my coffee and walked over to the Hub (GREAT PLACE!) to join me. My coffee was pretty average. Her cookie on the other hand had a special treat not mentioned on the sign, Walnuts! My wife is allergic to walnuts. A little "heads up" would have been nice. So all in all, one pizza, one salad, two panini sandwiches, a cookie, and a few drinks. $50 later, most of the food uneaten, I don't think I'll be back. read more

This review is for the Market portion of Maynards Market & Kitchen. Walk through the front door and you're greeted with an artful display of tempting pastries, to your left is delicious coffee, and next to the counter, gorgeous breakfast or lunch. Gorgeous entries? Yeah -- like those photos in magazines that make you hungry. A warming-light over food may cause you to doubt, but I'm here to encourage you past that -- grab the egg croissant, try the pot pie, snag that empanada -- the food is wonderful, the pastries are decadent. If frozen treats are more your style, Maynard's has an assortment of single-serve homemade ice cream and cheesecake. I should mention that the Market really is a market, with organic produce, groceries, and gifts items. They also sell beer and wine. But oh-my-goodness, our breakfast croissants were awesome! read more

Two reviews in one here, one for the market and one for the kitchen. Market: I like that Maynard's has a more affordable counterpart with a decent happy hour that lasts until 8pm. Wine and beer specials are about $6 or less and there are some yummy appetizer-size food specials that are under $10. Some food options include flatbreads, mussels, fries, and a burger. The ambience is very casual and it's a nice place to go for happy hour in general or for a drink before dinner in the Kitchen. Kitchen: I've dined at the kitchen a few times now, both in the dining room and outside on the patio. Both spaces are nice. I find that the dining room is much more elegant if you are looking for a fancier night out. Entrees will run your $25-30 but they are prepared well with local ingredients and the portions are just right. Their fish is usually done very well and I would recommend it amongst other places in Tucson of its caliber. Their wine menu is extensive, so there is something for everyone. read more

We were bowled over by the food, service and ambiance of Maynard's when we went for dinner on a Saturday night. The place was not full for a weekend evening, which was nice. The industrialish decor fit in well with the trains that were zooming by (about 4 during the course of our 2-hour dinner). After some serious soul searching, I ordered a wine, instead of one of the cocktails, which seem very good. The wine selection was varied and took into consideration less expensive bottles ($40) all the way up to a bottle that was $2150! I had a Macon Villages Chardonnay (which wasn't that great) and my dining companion a Demure Cab Sauv (which was excellent. And, in case you're looking for it, we just bought the last 17 bottles we could find online.) We started with the Herbed Gnocchi, which was magnificent. The aroma was awesome, even when it hit the table. Don't know why this isn't a main course. Then, I got the special - Sea Bass...with about 15 accompaniments that I thought were all different dishes (Israeli couscous, chantrelles, latke). My friend, the Cassoulet. Both were AWESOME. The sea bass was perfectly grilled and the accompanying sides...except for the Israeli couscous thing, which were cabbages and a little bland, was great. Even the sauce was good. My friend's Cassoulet was huge (as was my portion). We had to take the rest home in a doggy bag. The desserts were inventive - we never have desserts when dining out but the options sounded too good to pass up. There was a flourless Chocolate Terrine, a Carrot Cake (no restaurant even offers this as a dessert as far as I can tell, since it's hard to do well), some Lemon Tart thing, and a Goat Cheese Cake. We opted for the Chocolate Terrine, which was very chocolatey, very dense, and the goat cheese cake - much LESS dense than a regular cheesecake. We had to take the Terrine home with us. We basically just wanted to see how the desserts were like; we had no expectation that we'd be able to finish any of it. Coming from Seattle, I find the portions to be very large and the prices reasonable for this caliber of restaurant. Sea Bass special was $35.00, Cassoulet $26.00. Our server, Bob, was also very professional, without being overly smarmy. Overall, a wonderful dining surprise and a great way to spend my last evening in sunny Tucson! read more

I. Love. This. Place. Fresh, seasonal ingredients are carefully prepared and complimented by an exceptional wine list. The cocktails are creative, the espresso masterful, and the deserts are delicious and memorable (I can still taste the pumpkin panna cotta I had here last fall). I've always had professional, informed and well-timed service which made for a few wonderful experiences here. Though I never sat outside, the dining room is great for group or intimate meetings and has a warm, old dining-car feel. By far, my favorite place in Tucson. read more

I have to say, I have no idea how this place gets so many 5 star ratings. There is nothing completely wrong with it. But 5 stars for a place fairly pricy, right on the railroad tracks, and to be honest, a bit of a chaotic in it's layout and operation, just doesn't seem right at all. It's a decent place, but 5 stars? No. I've been dragged here a few times by friends that like it, but I'm not a fan. I do get how it's got a huge draw for a certain type of person, in the way Epic and Time Market draw a certain crowd. I don't like it, I don't hate it, and given the choice it's not at the top of my list of nearby places to go eat. But I get it's the "type" of thing a certain group are drawn to. There are different menus for "The Kitchen" and "The Market." The Kitchen menu is somewhat limited, and everything on it is a bit foo-foo. If you're into that sort of thing, prices aren't bad, but I've not been overly impressed with the food. It's good, not great. And I don't know why I keep thinking I'm going to get decent seafood in Tucson (well, Kingfisher excluded). The Market side is also a bit frilly, but I'd rate it a bit better with less opportunity to disappoint. The Market side, like The Kitchen side, still has everything with some sort of twist, like Turkey with "house prepared cranberry mustard." And a "Tucson Chicken Cheesesteak" with jalapeños... oh that's one of my pet peeves, people calling things that aren't Cheesesteaks a Cheesesteak. Almost no restaurant west of the Mississippi river deserves to use that word. If you want a Cheesesteak, go to Frankie's South Philly Cheesesteaks on Campbell, it is one of very very very few places that uses the word correctly. The crowd always seems to be a mix of hipster types with people desperate for a more upscale but local vibe, both of which can make the place unsettling to some people. But if you are into that sort of thing, it's might work for you. It's not bad if you don't mind the trains going by, and you enjoy people watching. Doesn't bother me, but it isn't a draw to the place either. And the service can be ok, and usually is ok. Not great, but not horrible. It's not 5 star, but it's not typical either. So, 3 stars is about right, not great, not bad at all, and a little bit different. It bothers me when people rate places like this 5 star, it's misleading to the other users on Yelp. Just because it's "your favorite place," doesn't mean t should be 5 stars and for everyone. My favorite places are 3-4 star places, but I like them, and don't over-rate them unnecessarily and set people up for disappointment. Bottom line to me is, it should get an "average" rating, but it's not an "average" place. It's not "5 star restaurants" at all. But that's not a bad thing, the place is still alright, and worth checking out. read more

Hosted my husband's big birthday party at Maynard's Kitchen, and I can HIGHLY recommend them for special occasions. As always, the food was creative, fresh, and delicious, and the setting is fantastic - seating for 14 on the patio on a gorgeous spring evening, with live music and the occasional train. However, the impeccable service is what really stood out. Manager Leif W. worked with me on the details, keeping in touch over the weeks before the event and accommodating all of my requests - including having the baker come in early to make the delicious German chocolate cupcakes for dessert. The waitstaff were fantastic and took care of our large group flawlessly. We had a WONDERFUL time! read more

Love their Friday wine tastings. The sommelier, Dave, is a great guy and very knowledgeable about the wines. Each tasting is theme, either the region or varietal. I am a member of the wine club, which is a great value. They have one long communal table and a handful of other small tables inside. But you can also sit on the patio as long as the tables aren't reserved for the restaurant. We have ordered a cheese plate, which was underwhelming, but the market's breakfast menu looks awesome, so I want to try that! read more

First, what a great ambience for lunch. Second, the service on this trip was great. Last time I went, they were still working out some of their glitches, but it seems that all is well now. I ordered the Cuban pork sandwich, at the recommendation of the server, and thought it was great -- as were the fries. Last time, I ordered a different sandwich and thought it was so-so, but I've since forgiven this experience (and, I think I picked it up in the market rather than getting table service). So I think Maynard's has finally stumbled upon the careful balance between their market ambiance and a nicer sit-down meal for the most part. But I'm still skeptical, given my past experience across the street at the Cup Cafe (same owners), where to this day I'd say don't bother trying to find a good value for dinner -- but brunch is awesome. I love the model at Maynard's, but think there's still much work to be done in trying to up-market the market cafe. For example, I think Olive and Ivy is completely wrong in their schizophrenic approach, but Maynard's certainly does a better job and I look forward to future visits here. Also pertinent, there's a wealth of wonderful inexpensive eateries nearby, so I always wonder whether I'm paying an extra couple of dollars for something comparable. But at the end of the day, I'd rather not sweat it. Maynard's really is a nice place to enjoy a meal, and the decor/ambiance is almost second to none. And by the way, you have to hand it to the owners for being the only ones to step up for the opportunity to open a restaurant in this location (which was a controversial deal at the time). read more

Walked in for dinner with my girlfriend on a whim. I had read up on Maynard's here on Yelp, so I knew to avoid sitting on the patio. Apparently this wasn't even an issue as all the tables had been booked and the only available space was at the bar. This suited me just fine since a not-so-secret restaurant tip is that sitting at the bar almost always guarantees good service. True to that truism, the bartender treated us great. Mixed up an Old Fashioned for me and seemed proud to do it right. I wish I had known about their reputation for good cocktails as I'd love to try more of them. I guess I'll have to go back soon. My girlfriend got the bouillabaisse which was pretty tasty and she seemed to really enjoy it (I've had better but I'm not holding that against them or anything). I got the cassoulet which was easily one of the richest things I have ever eaten. It's one of those dishes that is so good you know you'll be burping it up all night with a pang of regret but you cannot stop eating it because it's just so unbelievably rich and delicious. The only thing I didn't like about it was the house-made sausage that came with it. It was like a light liver sausage that I'm sure would have pleased a palate more accustomed to it, but I could have done without it. All told, the food rated between very good and excellent, the drinks were well done, we were treated well by the bartender, and I really enjoyed the ambiance and architecture. I will certainly return. read more

Been in Tucson for 13 years and just finally recently ate at Maynards for dinner. It was a hot summer night but the staff kept our water glasses full. It was a bit of a wait for our food, but our cocktails made us happy. I had ordered the filet steak, and it came out the way I love it. No pink. Yeah I love steaks well done. I am going to try not to wait so long to go back again for dinner again. read more

This was our first time at Maynard's. We made reservations for Christmas Eve dinner. They offered the regular menu and had some great Christmas menu items, as well. Ambiance was great. Outside the window they have a garden with herbs, fruit and veggies they use for the freshest seasonings and meal prep. Our server, Amelia was excellent. Very attentive without overdoing it. She made good drink and menu recommendations. From the beginning of the meal to the end, everything was very attractively presented and well seasoned. This is going to be one of our favorite restaurants and we will definitely come back. read more

For the location, atmosphere, service and food. 3 stars is fair. My husband ordered the steak with Belgium waffle fries and I ordered the fresh fish of the day a Grilled salmon flank with blueberry sauce and risotto balls. Let's start with the location . Located in downtown Tucson on Toole Ave. It is the home to our many venues for farmers market and a train station. That aspect is cool especially for people visiting from outside of tucson. Yes, you can watch the train zip by while you dine. Pros and cons. While it is cool, the train IS loud so you do have to wait for the train to fully pass before continuing on with the conversations. The decor , we were seated outside was nice , but on a hot weather your on your own. No fans, misters, nothing. I've dined inside before and it's a dark dim lighted short spaced room. Very intimate ,but gets hot and stuffy easily. Also, *** bathroom is upstairs!!! A bit inconvenient, but that's where it's at. The service was nice , kept up on the drinks and listed a few speciality and food came out hot. There was a bit of miscommunication however , when we ask for the check and give you the card it is under the assumption you would run the cars and bring it back not, hold on to it until the rest of the party pays. ( we wanted to pay and get home sooner than the rest of our party members ) Food- was okay. Not great, but not bad. I guess I had expected a bit more? My husband's steak was well cooked, but bland. And the belgium waffle fries was too thin and a bit bland. My salmon was cooked well enough, but again.... not much to it. You expect a bit more when your meals are quite pricey. read more

This is yet another attractive, high-quality Tucson restaurant, located right next to the train tracks (it was kind of nice hearing the trains go by every now and then). I started by taking a chance on the Magley Mule cocktail, which combines Illegal "Joven" Mezcal, house-made ginger syrup, fresh lime, mint, and soda. A solid drink that had a nice ginger flavor and avoided being either too strong or too sweet. As an entree, I had the Cassoulet, a French white bean stew baked with house made sausages, lardons, duck confit and garlic bread crumbs. It wasn't quite what I expected -- the duck was still on the bone and the sausage was served in a single link (it would have been nice if the sausage especially had been cut up in the stew) -- but everything was cooked to perfection and tasted great. My girlfriend had the pepperoni and spinach pizza, which was also quite good (and we both ended up with tons of leftovers). We finished with the Bread Pudding French Toast. Listed as white chocolate, hazelnuts, Riesling poached pear, and cognac ice cream, the ice cream tasted like the homemade vanilla special, but it was still a very tasty desert. read more

Service was good until our server didn't bring the silverware, water & appetizer plate. My English muffin was burnt on the edges. Drinks came wrong. Other than that ambiance was perfect. Trains went by frequently a bit noisy, not good for conversation. read more

Maynards - This was a beautiful setting for brunch. - Sandwiches Near Me - Tucson, Arizona

I went there to meet someone for a first date/meet & greet and it was the perfect setting. We started off with a cheese & fruit dish over conversation, which was pretty tasty. We were able to order a pizza at dinner time since neither one of us was too hungry but were able to get a great bite to eat. Not the run of the mill pizza either. :-) One of the best bartenders around kept the energy going and knew when to check on us at the perfect time to make sure things were well. The setting is pretty quiet, small with a feeling of being far away from Tucson...my beautiful date had more to do with that than anything! :-) I really enjoyed the feel of the place and its part of history it has to offer Tucson. read more

I didn't know Tucson had this nice place. We ordered mushroom pizza, potato pizza, sausage pizza, and French fries. Everything tastes so good and price was ok too. We went to there very late night and seated outside, and there was DJ, so it was kind of noisy but enjoyable. I would like to try brunch menu next time. read more

Fabulous, well thought out food in tiny, bordering on stingy, portions. For the price they could be a little more generous (a salad with two small dried figs? Could I have one more?). I think they want to discourage sharing an entree or ordering dinner from the appetizers. It seems a lot of these reviewers judged the restaurant after a couple of Maynards cocktails, which are truly transcendent. We love the patio, with the trains going by. read more

Everything at Maynard's is delicious and the ambiance is amazing, inside and out. I think they have one of the best happy hours in town, (cheap draft beers, $7 burger, $7 pizza) and I love to sit outside and watch the train for happy hour. I also love their breakfasts and side items in the Market side (there are two different entrances, a market and a restaurant). I still need to try their dinner menu, but I plan on doing so soon! read more

Maynard's is probably my and my girlfriend's all-around favorite restaurant in Tucson. The location is convenient to downtown, and every dish we've had has been excellent. The building is interesting, classy, and historic. The biggest reason we love Maynard's, though, is probably that they host a ton of wine-centric events. There are seasonally-themed wine-tastings outside on the patio seemingly a couple of times a month, and occassional jazz performances. In our book, the best events are the Wine Dinners for which they sell tickets on Eventbrite before-hand. They're usually 4 courses with paired wines; Chef Brian Smith gives a quick verbal intro to each course and a sommelier will talk about the pairing. Searing is at social tables with other parties, so you get to chat with other diners. We've been to three of these dinners so far, and they've all been great! read more

After a show at the Fox Theatre, we headed over to Maynards for a late night bite with another couple. For a Friday night, we were seated quickly by a very attentive hostess who set our table herself. The atmosphere is warm and comfortable and a DJ was playing a nice selection of music in the patio that you could hear inside. Two of us got the burger, which was cooked perfectly, and served with a heaping portion of tasty fries. My wife had the PEI mussels in a delicate wine broth with ample sour dough bread to savor the juice. The portions were filling, so we skipped dessert! There were plenty of other things on the menu to like. Someone else had the mushroom polenta, which she enjoyed. I'm keeping it on the list for the next time were downtown. read more

5 stars for food. The service really kinda sucked. However, the food was so good, I can't help but give this place 5 stars. Here right now. My family made reservations for Mother's Day with the assumption we would have access to the full menu. When we got here, there was a $55 fixed menu with limited options. Nowhere on the website indicated this would be the case. And of course, THIRTY MINUTES before we sit, we realize this with of course nowhere to go that isn't 1-2 hour wait. This was INCREDIBLY deceitful, and extremely disappointed. Put a huge damper on the morning. AND THEN, on top of everything, my dad ordered the salmon. The FIRST time it came out, it was luke warm, and then the SECOND time it came out, after it was put in the microwave, we realized it wasn't even cooked! Absolutely ridiculous! read more

I've had 3 great experiences at Maynard's, but the last one left a bit to be desired. The food is excellent, the patio is lovely, and beer and wine selection is wide and of high quality. Last time I went, however, another guest at my table ordered a Margarita, and it was waaaaay too sweet. Good margaritas are a dime a dozen in Tucson, so it was a little disappointing to pay so much at a fine restaurant for a bad drink. To be fair, the waiter noticed she wasn't really drinking it, and gave her another margarita for free (not quite as sweet, but still too sweet). We also arrived at 5:30 to eat before opera at 7:30. Although we didn't notify the waiter of our plans, dinner took more than 2 hours and we missed the opera. I had paella, which was slightly overpriced considering the quality. Everyone else was very satisfied with their orders. I plan on returning, and hope for a return to usual service. read more

The pluses: 1.it was very easy to get a table, even though I only called 45 minutes before we wanted to dine. 2. The server was very friendly, although she did forget to bring the cream for my tea and she forgot to bring my husband's second drink, until reminded. 3. The Onion soup was very good. My husband loved it, I thought it was a tad too salty. 4. The Cassoulet was delicious and was a very generous serving. 5. The mushroom side was also very good. The minuses: 1. Parking is terrible! We managed to find a space in the tiny parking lot. They do have valet parking -- we just didn't notice it until we had already parked and there is a giant parking garage less then a block away. 2. Pricey but not outrageous. 3. My husband had the fish which he felt was overwhelmed by the toppings, rather than enhanced by them. 4. The ambience was nice but it does get a bit loud as the restaurant fills up. By the end of the meal we could hardly hear each other. read more

I was here the weekend before New Years, not that it matters only that I had an amazing dinner with friends. I had the pork dish which was amazingly cooked and the portion was ridiculous. It's pretty dark in there, but the ambiance is just very romantic and intimate. Our only thing was the server, she seemed super rushed all the time and almost like a robot. We had to ask her to repeat a few things a few times because she just didn't make any sense or say things clearly. Their Italian wine selection wasn't great, but we had a D'alba to start and a Barolo for dinner, both very good bottles. They did have some live jazz playing outside that came in through the speakers, it went very well with the ambiance inside. I didn't really like or understand the paper for table covers but overall pretty good. read more

Five stars for both the market and the kitchen! Maynards has it's own parking lot and if you've ever been downtown you know how annoying parking can be so before we even got into the restaurant I was already in a good mood. We were greeted by a smiling hostess and seated promptly next to a window. Maynards is located right next to the Amtrak station so this provides for some great people watching while you are having your lunch or dinner. While we were people watching my wife and I got a little hungry and ordered the Poutine as an appetizer I would describe them as an upscale fench version of chili cheese fries. They are topped with duck gravy, cracklins, foie gras, and duck confit. The Sommelier was quick to arrive and offered some excellent suggestions for wine pairing he was friendly and with out a doubt knew his wines. The rest of the meal followed suit. When we were done we decided to checkout the market and pick up some wines luckily we ran into the sommelier and he was able to point out some good choices. I look forward to our next meal or trip to the market. read more

I've been on other occasions and enjoyed my experience...not so much this time. We came for breakfast during the week, so no brunch menu, which was a bummer, but not their fault. I came for a business meeting hoping to impress the out of towers with this local hot spot. We ordered a Carmel macchiato..the girl at the counter did say "this is not like Starbucks," which was so very true. It came in a tiny cup, super super strong. ( Looked more like an espresso... I get that Starbucks is not the difinitive authority on coffee...but still). We had to send it back and reorder ( at our cost). The girl at the counter was not friendly about this. She was very I-Told-You-So. I selected the duck waffle...she said they were out of duck. The next item I ordered they were out of as well. The girl made it seem like I was annoying her by selecting these items that I somehow should have known were not available. I ended on ham and Gruyere cheese waffle. These arrived and were so dry and flavorless that I ate hardly anything. You could definitely not identify any ham or cheese in this dish. We also had oatmeal, which my colleague ate two bites of and left. She was too polite to say why. I asked for a bottle of water and was told Snarkily that they had many to select from and which one did I want. Again, we felt like we were doing something wrong by ordering . Two older gentlemen came in while we were in line and politely interrupted our order asking for change for the parking meter. I literally saw the parking control guys outside as they were waiting for their change, so I told the girl at the counter to please give them change. She ignored me and told the. "You have to wait your turn." I said...they will get a ticket! Let them get change, Nope. Rude girl. The side door was broken when we arrived, so literally every 2 minutes someone would bang on it, or we would have to get up to let people in( they did have a sign ..small though..stating the door was broken). It was also unbearably cold! Like freezing! In any case, I was disappointed on many levels..with service, atmosphere and food. I do know we ordered from the counter, but this should not result in the experience we had. read more

Stopped in for a quick bite and some drinks before a show. We grabbed seats at the bar and got served pretty quickly. My friend asked a few relatively simple questions about the menu and the both bartenders were completely stumped. I suppose they were bartenders and not waiters but it seems like if they serve food at the bar they should know the menu as it's not really a rotating menu. They were also out of a few items and it was pretty early on a Friday night. The food that we had was decent even if we did have to settle for something we didn't want exactly. I suppose I should've known better than to order mussels in Tucson :-/ The ambiance is nice and it's a pretty comfortable place to hang out. I love the location, attached to the train depot and across from Congress. read more

While my last experience was still sub par, management reached out to discuss the issues we had. While great management can't 100% make up for a poor experience, I have added a star. I am hopeful that they were just having an "off" night as management seemed genuinely engaged & eager to address problems with their staff. I went from "never again" to, "Ok, I'll give it another shot." I will update at our next visit! Update: Finally got back to Maynard's & it appears the terrible night was a fluke. They were back on point with perfectly cooked scallops, better proportioned poutine (although I still question the bowl presentation over the plate) & phenomenal salmon. The risotto was cooked wonderfully & I will definitely continue to cook back! I'm so glad they pulled it out of the bag! read more

This restaurant is a special occasion place for us, because the tab can be expensive after appetizers, entrees, wine and dessert. Really, really worth it because everything is really perfectly done, and the outdoor ambience is different and pleasant. It's located at our Amtrak train station, so one of the times we had dinner, passengers were boarding. Very cool. Their patio is very nice, with plenty of space heaters, if needed. The wine selection is decent and priced reasonably. I try not to get too wonkish about wine, because "there's no bore like a wine bore". Truly. The food we've eaten has been perfectly prepared every time. Steak tartare, pate foie gras, pork shank, just to name a few of the selections, have all met expectations. The Brunch is fine too, but the ambience is better in the evening. However, their Market is open at that time, so there's that trade-off. If I'm asked my favorite restaurant in Tucson, Maynard's is the one. Oh, the service has been unobtrusive and attentive each time, too. That's important to me as well. read more

Suoer excited that this place was open again, it's been a favorite for a while. However, our dinner experience was disappointing, especially with regards to the service. We were encouraged by the host to get a drink at the bar and wait for our reserved table, which we tried, except the bartender didn't look at us for at least 20 minutes. When she finally said "I'll be with you guys in a moment" it was time for us to go sit at our table. We hoped our server would be more expeditious but it was pretty much the same: waited at least another 20 minutes to get a drink order. We didn't get served water either for at least half an hour, which made it almost a whole hour of not getting anything to drink from the time we sat at the bar, to the time we finally got our drinks, (which by the way was just a bottle of wine, not complicated cocktails that would take longer). Our server was pretty friendly, but her timing was off, with no regard for how long we'd been waiting for drinks or how long it took for her to take our food order. I understand that a lot of restaurants are understaffed at the moment, but 40+ minutes to get a first drink (including water) seems excessive, it would have been very different if anyone had at least acknowledge the long wait times. Food was good but underwhelming for the price-- read better on paper than tasted on the plate. read more

The service, the romance, and now valet parking...Maynard's does so much right. The pork schnitzel, breaded and fried over mustard spatzle with braised greens is satisfying, although the spatzle could have used more seasoning. The Bistro salad with butter lettuce and thick chunks of bacon and a perfect soft-cooked egg is a nearly guiltless pleasure. Soft lighting and the occasional train whistle provide nostalgic ambience, and we even got to draw on our table paper with mostly-sharpened crayons. Maynards is consistently delicious and manages to reinvent itself almost as often as Madonna, and as long as they keep it interesting I'll keep coming. read more

Went to this place last weekend and despite the fact that I May have made a poor entree selection, my gf had a wonderful dinner and our salads were among the best I've ever had. I ordered a seafood dish and though it had its high points (scallops were amazing) after living in a costal area there is no comparison. Our other entree was the Pork Schnitzel Over a Mustard Spatzle. Both were fantastic. We shared the Bistro salad and it was perfect. It was served w a breaded soft boiled egg as a garnish and it was just excellent! We had hoped to sit inside but one should call in advance to reserve what limited space they offer in-doors. It was a nice night but there were kids running all over the place and there was a band playing too loudly. Over all our visit was very pleasant and we will be back soon. The service was spot on. Very well informed and enthusiastic about their chef's ability. read more

5 star experience at Maynard's. Went for an anniversary dinner at 8:00pm on a Friday night. It was very nice, and we were treated very well. The food was excellent. Great vegetarian options, very large wine list. They make a fantastic Texas Mule with Tito's Vodka. The atmosphere is perfect for a nice dinner. If you were to try to lure someone to coming to Tucson, I'd imagine Maynard's is one of the places you take them to eat. read more
