Service was great, very cordial and pleasant waitress and busboy. The steamed muscles were terrific. The seasoning was memorable. I consider that the ambiance was much like an old-fashion San Francisco restaurant-bar except for being much more open and brighter. We had a terrific time. read more

Happy hour is my new favorite thing. I was looking for a casual mid afternoon eat and so I walked into Maynard's happy hour. The cocktails blew me away with interesting combinations like a whiskey, grapefruit and honey that was delish. Foods we had the Duck Poutine, steak Tartare, two goat cheeses, as well as oysters. The experience was coupled with a knowledgable bartender who was spot on with his recommendations. It is not as pricey as a full dinner and it made me feel full for hours so it's something I look forward to returning to. read more

Maynards quickly became a Tucson hotspot. The ambiance, both food and drink menus, and commitment to local meats and produce all impress, but I found both the service and food to be hit and miss. For a small meal, the mussels in white wine can be great. However, on a number of occasions the mussels were fishy and inedible. I sent them back and asked when they arrived at the restaurant; it was nearly a week before the waiter set them in front of me. No bueno. The Raclette was not memorable. Their meat choices were good, but no better than I could find at many other restaurants (or AJ's) in town. I did not care for the pickles. I enjoyed the roasted beets on several occasions. They were cooked perfectly; the natural sugars transformed them into crispy treasures. If you're ordering cheese, I recommend the Humbolt fog (goat's cheese that resembles brie coated in chevre), Beemster (yellow, aged), and Idiazabal (a hard sheep's milk). The current jelly served with the fromage is great on the Basque sheep's milk cheese, or alone. A friend ordered the Choucroute Garnie and liked it, but others in the party commented that the sausages were nothing to write home about. I once decried that the Bouillabaisse at Maynards was the best in town, but recently it was severely disappointing. The once rich and decadent broth is now greasy and lacking in flavor. In my last bowl, the mussels and scallops were overcooked, and there were only 2 pieces of onion. I will not order this again, or at least will wait to taste someone else's to make sure the quality improved. The macaroni is okay, a bit greasy and over salted. My favorite menu item is the potato pizza. SOOOOOO good. It's comprised of thin slices of Yukon golds over a perfectly cooked crust and garlic sauce. Shaved green onions, rosemary, and Fontina make this the most memorable thing on the menu. The mushroom pizza is also fabulous. The arugula, goat cheese, and roasted garlic complement the mushrooms, which do not loose center stage on this dish. Other great dishes: Cassoulet Pork Belly Braised Beef Service is slow. The noise level is high. And the rotating menu does not highlight enough seasonal fruits and veggies. The wine choices are great, and the signature drinks are good. I wish you were more consistent Maynards, you have great potential. read more

Alright here's what you need to know before going to eat at Maynard's market - MINIMUM time you must set aside for a lunch experience is about 45 minutes...and no, this is not an exaggeration. I have waited up to 25 mins for a sandwich, heck I've waited that long for a salad sometimes too. Not particularly anyone's fault for it taking so long, but also unclear as to why because a lot of the times I'm 1 of 3 people in there. I appreciate they have taken strides to eliminate plastic waste and I ESPECIALLY appreciate that the straws do not collapse like normal paper straws do. I think there's are made out of avocado pits or some such, idk. They used to have gum for sale by the register which they don't anymore and that is a bummer for me cus I work in the area and I'd like to freshen my breath before getting back to the office. They always have two soup options - one is a staple that doesn't change (currently a carrot veloute, which I'll be honest I have not even the slightest clue what that means) and then the other soup rotates. Wish it was always tomato soup cus that's just the best soup option, in my honest opinion...you just can't beat it. Staff is friendly and helpful. They got rid of the girl who was really mean close to a year ago, thank gosh. She seemed annoyed to be existing. read more

Tried taking my mom here for a lite birthday appetizer- turning out to be one of the worst dining experiences I've had in a while. Its currently super slow but still the service is horrible. No water refills, the waiter didn't ask my mother if she wanted another beer and forgot to come back to the table after we asked about an item. It's been some time since I've been out in Tucson and I have to say, this wasn't an experience worth writing about- except negatively. I've been waiting 10 minutes for the check to be picked back up by the manager who was on their phone when I asked for the tab. In the waiter, in his defense, was not helped by his female counter part who maybe just thought team work doesn't make the dream work? Maybe next time Maynard's. read more

First off, Maynards is unique in that it has its own little parking lot, a rarity in that area, so you don't have to waste time finding a street meter. When you enter The Marketplace, there is a really nice atmosphere. There is a full bar, a barista station, and a case featuring pastries. The menu has a good variety for whatever you are feeling, even for breakfast! There are vegan options, vegetarian options, and if you're a meat lover, I hear from a friend the bacon is pretty phenomenal! As you can see there is lovely presentation on the plate. My avocado toast was accompanied by arugula (my favorite!) and a strawberry. It was absolutely delicious! I've tried the black coffee and the espresso as well. Black coffee was meh. If you're looking for something really impressive, go to one of the nearby specialty shops. The espresso here at Maynard's wasn't too bad, though! The indoor seating features cute wooden tables, and there is a HUGE patio outside if you're looking to get some sun. This place is really cute, and as of now is my favorite place to go out and get breakfast here in Tucson. My next mission here- to try out the bar!!! read more

Spent some time at the bar at the Market last night as I waited with my friend to get on a train and found it to be a very welcoming and friendly atmosphere. Our bartender (a cute little blond girl) was engaging and easy to talk to. The merlot was tasty and the pours were generous. We left the bar area to sit out on the patio and enjoy the brisk (FINALLY) night air with a little more wine. Definitely a cool place to hang out - I'll be back. read more

Great, intimate space - I found the occasionally passing freight trains an interesting plus. Interesting, creative cocktails and a menu that probably changes daily. Our appetizers, entrees and dessert were unique, well prepared and most importantly delicious. Service (Brittney) was excellent. We were disappointed that it was our last evening in Tucson - it would have been interesting to go back and see how the menu had changed. Overall, one of the top three restaurants we've been to in Tucson. read more

Meeeehhhhh. This was so disappointing and underwhelming! I'm giving 2 stars for ambiance only. First of all, service was terrible. Our waitress was super flakey. She repeated the special twice, asked us if we wanted bread (we did) and then never brought it, she took our drink and appetizer order and then we had to ask her to take our entree order after a veeeeery extended period of time (we finished our appetizers and then I had to tell her that we needed to order - our menus were still on the table), we waited forever for our bill and had to flag her down to get it. Annoying that we essentially had to do her job for her. As far as the food and drink, the beet appetizer and chicory salad were solid. The quail was a joke. Teeeny tiny (moreso than most quail) with burned legs and wings and very little breast meat. Cornbread stuffing was mediocre. Ricotta gnocchi was ok but nothing to write home about. We ordered a bottle of white wine that was brought to our table at room temperature so we had to share our small table with a clunky bucket of ice. Poor form, Maynard's. We had been visiting from Austin and this was our last dinner in Tucson. We will be back to Tucson and we look forward to spending our money at all of the food gem establishments that we found. Maynard's will definitely NOT be on that list. read more

I was called several times as our reservation was for a special New Years Eve menu. They assured me that although they were having troubles getting the menu promised, they would make it special. They had no decorations for New Years not even a flower. The menu was very limited, wrong items were brought, items were forgotten and in general a very disappointing experience. We had fun with friends but were embarrassed as we had out of town company. We've been to Maynard's many time and have always like it. Whatever they changed as Of COVID was a terrible mistake. It will be a long time before we are willing to give it a second chance. read more

The folks were friendly, the atmosphere warm and cozy, the food was excellent and the drinks totally unique and tasty. Emma, our waitress, was attentive, personable and professional. Tim Laevy the bartender and/or owner willingly gave us his recipe to an amazingly fabulous drink called Open Sesame that was one of the unique beverages I've ever had. Everyone there was friendly. We'd highly recommend this place. read more

Maynards! I LOVE YOUR FOOD. I have eaten indoors and outdoors, and the service has always been divine. My most recent experience was about a month ago. My husband and I were having our last date night before I left for a trip and he left for work. We came in on a Monday night. It was not crowded, but it was pretty late for dinner. I think we were there around 8PM. We ordered the Poutine which are fries made in duck fat, with duck confit, foie gras, cheese curds, and topped with duck gravy. That plate in itself is absolutely breathtakingly fabulously delicious. I am not going overboard with the description. Just order the Poutine... it is mind-blowing. The waiter recommended a wine. I can't remember, but it was delicious. Maynard's has a very good drink selection as far as cocktails and wine go. I ordered the pork shank. It was pretty ridiculous in size. There were so many flavors in that dish that it was hard to combine them all in one bite. It was definitely a winner in my book. The portion size was huge, so I was definitely unable to even make it look like I tried to eat it. Nevertheless, my experience was wonderful. If you are looking for an upscale atmosphere and wonderful food, check out Maynards. You won't be disappointed! read more

So this one is part of the Yelp has an app for that food fight. Ill be posting a review just for the app and then I'll update at a later time once I actually have a full blown meal here!. Stop # 13 yay lucky number thirteen! Maynards is such a cute place! I love how half of the restaurant has the dinning car feel like a train. So we sat at the bar and ordered up "The stumbling Monk" - Oxtail croquettes, chimay cheese dip, and shaved scallions. We chatted with the bartender for a bit about our travels, and he was stoked to here the verdict on some of his favorite places. Once the waitress brought out our app, the bartender poured us a small glass of chimay beer. What a great compliment I must say. I have never had oxtail before, in fact I have never had any kind of tail so I was curious. I took the croquette and plopped it into the cheese dipping sauce and took a taste. Holy smokes!! I instantaneously became a fan of oxtail. It was juicy and full of flavor. The girl I came with (Emily H.) is usually squeamish about things like this but I look over and her cheeks were full and she giggled as she tried to swallow. Was it good? Nothing but more giggles. I guess so! I gave this place a 4 of 5 only because maybe 4 croquettes would have been better. Dang Im needy! read more

My husband and I are starting a food tour of downtown Tucson, which we were going to start with Downtown Kitchen & Cocktails; unfortunately, they were closed for an event. We were disappointed but not discouraged, so we headed to Maynards, which was second on my list. I am so excited that we went there first! We went inside of the market, which has a lovely casual ambiance and the walls that are lined with affordable wines. It was empty so my husband and I started talking to Derek, who told us about the menu and gave us the lowdown on the Market and the Kitchen. He was a genuine pleasure to talk to and helped us navigate the menu and pastry goods. Now, onto the food. My husband got the Smoked Brisket Po'Boy and really loved it- he said it was filling but he didn't feel gross and greasy afterwards. The meat was tender and the flavors were present and elevated the sandwich. He was also tickled pink that they had Sasparilla and we even bought a bottle to take home. I had the Duck Confit Panini. It was incredible. The duck was tender and flavorful and the fig spread added just enough sweetness to kick it up a notch. The bread was fresh and crispy. The chips were okay, I wish they were a tad crispier, I wasn't sure if they weren't made right then and there but I like my chips crispy and hot. My husband has already made a bold declaration that Maynards is his new favorite spot. We will absolutely return. read more

We did not explore the market area but we can say that Maynard's Kitchen side is a great spot for a nice dinner. The decor is that of a train depot in an upscale way not cheesy. The menu was interesting and fresh. We had fresh pacific oysters which they served with a house made pickled onion and Tabasco accompaniment as well as the traditional mignonette. The deconstructed duck confit salad was to die for. The duck was perfectly cooked moist and tender on the inside with a crisp skin on the outside. The melt-in-your-mouth braised lamb shank was perfectly seasoned and just fell off the bone. We also had a couple of thoughtful well made martinis. They served those in delicate antique style etched martini glasses which added to the charm. We finished the meal with creme brûlée and cappuccino then headed to the theater to finish off a fantastic evening. Overall we were pleasantly surprised. Having been confused by the part-market part-restuarant nature of the place we feared it would be too casual. But it wasn't, just right the amount if elegance and charm. read more

To be honest, I spend WAY too much time here! Maynards is one of my go to places downtown! It's a convenient meeting spot, the food in both the market and kitchen is great, their patio is dog-friendly and large group friendly. It's a good coffee shop during the day and a nice restaurant at night. It's also very photo friendly! They host a lot of fun events that I like (like Meet Me At Maynard's on Mondays). The list of positives go on and on! Prices for breakfast and lunch are pretty good. The only con that I can think of is that dinner can be a bit pricey but it's damn delicious! You really can't go wrong. I would recommend their chicken. And pork. And red risotto. Their chicken salad sandwich from the cafe is great too! read more

I have been to Maynards for lunch but found they do a limited breakfast too. I fell for the waffles with fresh fruit. Very nice presentation and the taste was good. The dish was just right in size. They have a nice patio area which you need to have some tolerance for an occasional passing of a train, but I like trains so I am cool with the minor disruption. Outside of that, they have a pretty good view of Mt Lemon and this morning it stood out with a light dusting of snow and low hanging clouds. The other thing I enjoyed was the good selection of background music. Nice start to the morning. read more

(This review is strictly for my market lunch experience!) Came here for lunch and ordered the chicken sandwich and my friend got the ceasar salad. I also order their chai because I'm a chai fanatic and order it whenever I get the chance. The food was ok...good ingredients but for the price, I'd expect something a little closer to AJ's Fine Foods. The concept is setup similar to AJ's where they serve pastries, cafe drinks, sandwiches, etc. My chai, while it was decent, was only filled up maybe 1/3 of the way and the rest foam - I ordered a large btw and it felt very much like a small so for a $5 chai latte, I definitely felt I got jipped. We sat outside in the patio and the train kept going by every 10-15mins. It was very loud and awkward to have a conversation with my friend. My sandwich was simply okay. I only ate one half and didn't finish the other. The service was really good. The lady was very patient with me while I was ordering. Overall, I'm going to stick to AJ's...closer to home and much more satisfying. I will have to come for dinner and hopefully the food will be better. read more

We ate a late lunch at the "Market" versus the "Kitchen" which opens at 5 pm for dinner. Our Espresso beverages, sandwiches and salads were well prepared with quality ingredients. Orders placed and beverages picked up at the counter; food orders delivered to the table. Service was a little lackadaisical while getting drinks, asking about the soup of the day, etc. When the rest of our party arrived, I ordered food for four and gave a 20% tip. Service became outstanding! Food was rushed to our table by a team of pleasant servers. The pay parking is a drag. Two hour meter parking (quarters or plastic) 8 am to 5 pm. At 5 pm parking became valet only. Not sure if that is every day or if a special event was starting. I remember this railroad station prior to its redevelopment. It was a real dump. Now it is a very pleasant venue. Trains do roll by the outdoor seating area, but I like trains. Check out the railroad museum in the same building. read more

I wanted to speak to the chef about why the kitchen refused to accommodate one of our party with a dietary restriction (celiac disease). The diminutive manager Mr. Leavy physically blocked my path to the chef's office, telling me the chef was "very busy" (the restaurant was practically empty at the time, and I could see the line cooks standing around and joking with each other in the kitchen, not preparing anything) and he elf-splained to me that celiac is "just an allergy" apparently unworthy of accommodation by them (celiac is a medically-diagnosed autoimmune disease triggered by the ingestion of gluten and also a legally-recognized disability, which anyone running a restaurant should know, plus, what are food allergies--lifestyle choices???) Manager Leavy was so determined to protect the chef from hearing my complaint that he sicced no fewer than 4 security personnel from the Hotel Congress on me and then he stood behind their protective wall as we left. Needless to say, I will not patronize these idiots or the Hotel Congress again. (Also the food was meh and the wine list was inaccurate and ridiculously overpriced. We paid for a Barbera d'Alba and received a lesser quality Barbera d'Asti with no apology from management). read more

I've been to Maynard's a bunch of times now and am always pleased with the food and the service. I've had the house pasta, the beer-brined chicken and the spiced flourless chocolate torte. It's a nice place for a date or to meet up with friends. I've also attended a few conferences here, which have been great experiences as well. The biggest con about this restaurant is the parking. There's a small metered lot, but it is usually full around dinner time. I've spent over 30 minutes waiting for a stall. I've heard about their wine tastings. Some friends and I tried to check it out, but we got there too late. Sigh. We shall try again next time! read more

The service was great and very friendly. The atmosphere INSIDE is perfect for taking someone on a date or catching up with a friend. Very intimate setting. Parking was great and got a spot right when we got there, after 5pm on weekdays its free. Thats a huge plus especially for a restaurant in downtown. The butter for the bread was yum, it just spreads on so easily and makes it hard for you not to stop asking for more bread to use it on. (The amazing butter is not sold in the market so enjoy it) For appetizer we had Barrio Bruschetta, it had locally grown figs, yummy prosciutto, and perfect amount of argula. It was delicious, will order again. For the entrees, we had the Lamb Shank and Bouillabaisse. The lamb shank just fell off the bone and was the best lamb I've had. Loved the touch of charred brussel sprouts. The Bouillabaisse, the broth was wow. I would have as much of the broth in the beginning, since the broth didnt continously have that yummy factor as it continued to stew since its very warm. But besides that, the seafood was delicious. Will order both entrees again, very suggested. Can't wait to have the left overs with rice at home. For dessert, we shared the creme brûlée. Ps. Dont forget to draw on the table with the provided crayons. read more

I'll start by saying that the cocktails at Maynards are absolutely amazing and delicious! Then there is the food... Everything is so over priced it was ridiculous! The steak tartar for $18. came out looking like a hamburger patty for some reason and was a very lite portion but the flavor was decent. PLEASE do not get the "seasonal" mushroom risotto because, well, I don't even know what to say about it other than just do not get it. Again, the drinks were amazing! I really hope that people have a better experience than we did. read more

I guess my 3 stars may be due to a unique set of circumstances, but nonetheless, a 3 it is. Until I return I suppose. I was meeting a friend there, who invited me for their weekly wine tasting. Well I wasn't sure where to go and ended up in the restaurant waiting for her. I decided to sip on a Gin Fizz while waiting and unfortunately I was less than impressed with my Fizz. Tasted more like a Gin and Tonic. My friend finally showed up and much to our dismay, it ended up that we were a day early for the weekly wine tasting, so we decided to stay for a bit for the 1/2 off bottle of wine and a couple of tasty treats. The only reason we decided on snacking was due to the pricey menu! We called our waitress over to let her know of our mistake and that we would just be getting a few small things and I swear I felt like I had just become a second class citizen! It could have been my imagination but I'm pretty sure she got a bit snobby on us. She did end up loosening up toward the end of the evening, but it didn't start out so great! Our 1/2 off bottle of wine was beautiful and well served. We ended up ordering the cheese platter and the mussels and enjoyed every minute of it. I have yet to find mussels that come close to the King Fisher's mussels, and this was no exception. Good broth but not great. The cheese platter was great. A nice selection, but it didn't come with any crackers. We had to order another basket of bread to help us out. Overall we had a nice experience. I think next time I'll wait for cooler temps so I can sit on the patio. I do recommend Maynards but make sure you make a significant bank deposit if you want a nice meal! read more

Lovely restaurant with sophisticated atmosphere. Excellent service. Reservation for a particular table was honored and ready when we arrived. Food was good, as expected. Steak tartare was good, an unusual presentation. We liked it and the accompanying onions and chips. Poutine seems to be a signature dish. It is better served on a plate to get the most out of these ingredients. Ours was very light on gravy and dry at the bottom of the bowl. My lamb shank was rather oily with a very big chunk of fat on top and has been much more richly flavored in the past. Husband's boulibase was good, lots of seafood. Sopped up sauce with excellent bread. Didn't care for poached pear dessert because one pear was stone hard while second one was properly soft but dish was rather boring and again not at all flavorful. Avoid. Poor end to an otherwise fine evening Still love Maynard's and will be back. read more

We had dinner here on a Sunday night. It was busy but not noisy. We first sat at the bar and had a great Manhattan beautifully served in a Martini glass just the way I like it. Awesome is the only word for Maynards. Delightful space, friendly, intelligent and professional staff and oh, the food! The scallops may have been the best ever! We dined at the Kitchen. We were welcomed by the host and the night never stopped being fantastic. Our server was Jackie and she might have been the highlight of the night! We started with some cocktails and perused the wine list. Jackie was happy to give recommendations and help us choose. We ordered 2 appetizers to share with our group; the diver scallops and the mushroom toast. Both Amazing! The scallops were huge and so flavorful, perfectly cooked! The mushroom toast was unique and the goat cheese really elevated the dish. I kept going back for more. Our entrees were the whole trout, the fresh fish (grouper) and half roasted chicken. Everyone was highly satisfied with their choices. Simple but delicious flavors and great portion sizes! We will absolutely be back and will always ask for Jackie! read more

We dined here for the first time on our anniversary and overall, we had a great experience. The hostess was very welcoming and asked if we were celebrating anything special and even though we said we were, that wasn't brought up again in the evening (not sure if there was a reason for asking?) It took a while for us to be served (about 10 minutes after sitting down) but everything after that was smooth sailing. I had some bubbly while my husband asked for a non-alcoholic drink. The waiter recommended something for him and it suited his palate perfectly. The charcuterie board and oysters as appetizers were divine--probably the best cheese board I've had, the flavors balanced so well that I could feel the intent behind the selections. We had gnocchi and the steak as entrees and those were also a hit. Oh gosh, the gnocchi...it was the kind of dish I'd dream about and would definitely go back for. While we thought we were too full for dessert, our waiter asked if we were sure, because they had a really good tiramisu cheesecake on the menu. Funny thing--my husband loves cheesecake and I love tiramisu, so this was a sign that we had to get dessert. Glad that we did! It was amazing and a great end to our evening. They are definitely in the higher price range but the food quality, service and restaurant ambience justify it. Even with the slow start, our service was still remarkable--shout out to Matthew!
