As a recent transplant to Tucson, Maynard's is one of our favorite places so far. We joined the wine club and have really enjoyed checking out the Friday night tastings. $60 gets you a tasting every Friday all summer as well as a red & white bottle of wine each month. Happy hour is also running during the tasting - a Chef's board ($10 HH) and the wine tasting are a great way to cap off the week! They also have live music during the wine tasting, which is go-at-your-own-pace. In terms of food, favorites are definitely the HH burger and the Chef's Board. We haven't been able to check out a full-on dinner here yet, but look forward to doing so. Great view, good noms, excellent wine selection - I'm in! read more

This place is horrible, but I probably won't be back. The food was decent, but the Chef's board was strange. Usually the board is spaced out and intended to pair with a wine (or anything), but it was served in a bowl and all the ingredients were pulled on top of each other. Also, I asked if the choice of cheese had goat milk, because I don't prefer the flavor and I was assured it didn't. Endless to say, it is, but they insisted it was lamb milk . The scallops are decent, but sweet, so keep that in mind if ordering. However, the house made butter that is served with the bread is amazing and my server was good. read more

For $275 per year, you get two bottles of wine each month and free wine tastings each Friday (approx 5 tastes). There is also a discount on their wine dinners. Wine tastings are also available a la carte for $12. So each week the wines rotate. I forgot to do so and we almost didn't get seated. the space is small and limited but also cozy and quaint. My guest and I were there for my birthday day so we went all out! We got a bottle of wine and cocktails. The presentation of the drinks and food was on point. We had the duck and the steak. Both were cooked to perfection and had complimentary sides and flavors. We also had desserts: red wine torte and tiramisu cheesecake. My only Complaint is the cheesecake had 3 lady fingers on top that were inedible. Since reopening post-Covid, Maynards has changed its Food philosophy from fresh, mostly local, traditional food to just weird. We used to love it for the duck, red meats, sometimes game items on offer. Our service was excellent, but the menu is now sustainable with oddball items and combinations. We will happily recommend it again if the menu returns to what it was and the new chef loses the need to serve everything in a bowl! read more

Left in tears at one of the worst, most disrespectful experienced I have had dining in Tucson. I took my whole family here who were visiting from across the country and for some background context, myself and my three sisters have celiac disease (an autoimmune disease that causes the body to attack itself if gluten is ingested - it blows, believe me I would eat all the gluten in the world if I could). We realized the food portions were pretty small and when talking to the waiter about what could be prepared gluten free, I asked about a side of potatoes for my sister and I to share since no entree came with sides. He told us the sauce had soy sauce in it that they put on the potato dish, but said he would ask if they could prepare it just without the sauce. The waiter spoke to the kitchen and came back and said that "the kitchen did not have potatoes to spare for special requests" and essentially that they needed to save the potatoes for other customers. I clarified that we'd of course pay the full price as denoted on the menu, we just wanted some potatoes and the waiter spoke with the kitchen again. At this point the kitchen agreed and I thought all was fine and maybe just miscommunication, but when time came for our meals, we were delivered a bowl of boiled, unseasoned potatoes - at full price, not even salt. I am not one to be picky, I understand that celiac and eating out can be tricky, but to me this felt really insulting. My dad spoke to the manager who told us "it's just a food allergy and we aren't here to accommodate that" - it is not a lifestyle choice, it's an unfortunate disease and the way they treated us sucked. When my dad asked if he could speak to the chef about this, they escorted him out of the restaurant with a team of security! The manager watched my mom pay the full bill, told her "happy holidays" and escorted my family out. It was humiliating, frustrating, and overall disappointing. I have had much less expensive restaurants treat me and my family with more care and understanding. Absolutely would not return. read more

A Tucson staple! Such a cute little market with delicious food. Parking is tricky to find as well as outside tables, so more room to sit would be nice. The 1/2 sandwich 1/2 salad combo is a good portion and comes with a pickle and side of chips. Tuna salad sandwich - delicious! Came here for my 5th anniversary, The service was phenomenal, appetizers were solid, drinks solid, they even brought us a dessert for our anniversary. When it came to the entrees (most expensive things in the menu), my scallop dish had hair in it, and my husbands steak dish was one of the worst cuts we've ever had and we are generally very easy going. The only reason we're being so harsh is because of how expensive the dishes are. For 45 dollars I got three pieces of scallop and like 6 pieces of gnocchi and still had hair in it. The steak was very chewy and we would have sent it back but we still paid for it because we felt bad. Great for appetizers and drinks and especially service but terrible for entrees.. read more

I was so excited that this restaurant was open again. Turns out there were a lot of changes, but they exceeded expectations yet again. They change their menu very frequently and all of the ingredients are locally sourced. The sommelier (who was very involved on the floor, even to the point of clearing plates) told me he personally picked the grapes used to make the wine that I ordered. For the food, money, and service, one of the best restaurants in Tucson. My wife and I have been going there for years and we have always had outstanding meals with superb service. One of our favorite times of the year to go is during Monsoon when it starts to cool down at night. The combination of a warm summer evenings, trains rolling by, and wonderful music in the background--and, of course, great food--make for a quintessential Tucson dining experience. What a fun place for lunch! My son and I visited after attending the Tucson anniversary event at the train depot and a craft show. We were able to order quickly and the gentleman gave us some suggestions. We ended up with the Italian flatbread as an appetizer and a Cubano and Reuben with chips for our lunch. Both of our sandwiches were delicious; the meats and breads were great quality. I also had a really refreshing bottled juice I hadn't seen elsewhere. We shared a yummy peanut butter cookie, as well. It's a bit expensive, but it's really good and we were definitely full and satisfied when we left. I'd love to try other items, including more of the tempting desserts. They also have special events, like an Italian dinner, that sound like a good time to meet others and share a wonderful meal. The inside is kept quite authentic so we also enjoyed the architecture and design, including the long table you share with others. We we lucky to sit by a wonderful mother and her two adorable boys. I first went here for my 20th birthday and I was blown away by the quality of food, service, and environment they have created. I went back with my friends to celebrate some good news and they have only gotten better. If you didn't know, their menu changes often because they focus on local food sources and sustainability, which is music to my ears as an environmental scientist! We were sat outside surrounded by heaters so the cold didn't even touch us. When they first gave us the menu I was startled at the scarce selection, but it makes sense if they are a bit limited due to what I mentioned above. And don't get me wrong, there was definitely something for everyone - meat lovers and vegetarians alike! The vibe definitely makes you feel "fancy" and gave us a great excuse to dress up nice. When we got our food, the display was breathtaking I almost didn't want to ruin it if it didn't look as equally delicious. We could tell the chefs put so much care and attention to detail into cooking and plating each dish, even the starters! We also got dessert because duh! We were able to try their citrus beignets and they we literally bites of clouds - so soft and fluffy and left us needing more! While the price ranges a little high, the food, service and overall experience definitely makes it worth it. read more

Maynards Market screams "Downtown Tucson!" It's artsy, in an old train depot, and has a lot of style and character. I think half of enjoying where you are eating is the environment, and Maynards Market gives you one of the best downtown Tucson has to offer. The market is as it says, a less formal dining option where you can grab your drink and a simple lunch. You order at the counter and take a number (my favorite way to do it) and hang out in a place with a casual yet hip feel and the occasional train whistle cruising by. The lunch was excellent as their salads and sandwiches were delicious and the service was friendly and quick. My only regret was that I didn't come and spend a lazy Saturday having drinks with friends on Maynard's patio. My sister mentioned to me that Tucson is a foodie city, so we went out for dinner downtown at the beautiful Maynards Market & Kitchen. We started with drinks and the chef's board, which had three cheeses and two cured meats. I really liked their quince paste. For dinner, we split the bistro salad and their pasta of the day. The salad was yummy and fresh, and the pasta was good. I think the olives in the pasta were a little overpowering, but we left stuffed and happy. I'd choose something else versus the pasta next time, but the flavors overall were really on point. I recommend a reservation, because it's a popular spot. We were able to find two seats at the bar. I'd only been to the Market section of Maynards before and always loved the food that I've had there, so on a Friday night, the dude and I decided to go out for a fancy meal and landed on Maynards because it's one of his favorite places in town. We called around 6 asking about wait times and were told they were super busy but were able to accommodate us at 7:45. We arrived around 7:30, and found the restaurant maybe 70% full--and a bunch of the tables definitely stayed empty throughout our meal. And the patio wasn't open because it was very chilly out. We were sat at a four-top right away. It was fine but a touch confusing that they seemed to make a big deal about being busy and then were pretty standard throughout the night. Not a huge deal at all, just odd. We opted for a bottle of French Pinot Noir, which was very light and tasty. Our server was a little light handed with the pours, so we went ahead and filled our own glasses to our desire. Love that they have an extensive wine selection, as well as a good number of beers and cocktails if wine isn't your thing. We shared the pomme frites to start, which were super crispy and fresh, and came with a tasty garlic aioli. They were a touch salty for my taste, but still nice and potatoey. I also had some of the bread and butter; the bread was good but not phenomenal, while the butter was soft and spreadable and delightfully chivey. The dude went with the bouillabaisse for his entree (sans toast for gluten free), and I opted for the ricotta gnocchi with chicken added. He absolutely annihilated the bouillabaisse; it's his favorite dish there and he loves it. I had a quick taste and it was delicious for sure. A bowl of all kinds of sea animals in a light and fresh broth. My gnocchi was amazing--probably the best gnocchi I've ever had, no exaggeration. It was fried crispy on the outside and so fluffy and potatoey on the inside; the mushrooms and cherry tomatoes went so well with the creamy sage dressing, and the chicken was a good addition for sure (but not necessary if you're not a meat eater). It was so good and also made for great leftovers! We were stuffed from dinner, so we opted to pass on dessert, but the options sounded great. We will definitely have to be back another time to try them out. Our server was awesome; super attentive and really friendly, he was helpful all night. He answered any questions we had and reassured us that we made great food decisions, which always makes me feel good at any restaurant. My one small gripe is that it's a bit pricy for what you get; everything is super tasty but medium sized portions in comparison to the price tag. Most people probably don't notice this but they did phenomenal job of drowning out the noise of a moving train that is probably like 20 ft away. Bravo. My only issue with this restaurant and it is very minuscule was there was a bit of cork in my wine when served to me. Which is not the end of the world but easily correctable. MMy first time to have baked eggs and boy, were they delicious. They had leeks and mushrooms and a creamy cheese sauce that the eggs were nestled in and I loved them! They were served with tasty fried potatoes with peppers and onions (and properly seasoned, which surprisingly seems hard to come by at most brunches) PLUS fruit and not the green melon only kind. It had cantaloupe and blackberries and strawberries. And finally, an English muffin with what seemed to be homemade blackberry jam. I also ordered a coffee and a MYOB (make your own bellini), which you can pick and choose what you mix into your champs and what lines your rim - blood orange and sugar for me. They also have a make you own mojito option. We also ordered the beignets and they were wonderful, warm pillows of doughy goodness with both nutella and plain whipped cream, some of which I may have dropped into my coffee. This place has been on my list for about a year now(not a long list, I just slow at checking things off) and I finally got around to making a reservation. To say that I am glad that I did would be an understatement. I really love their intimate indoor venue space, it was perfect for celebrating my boyfriend's birthday. Our waiter was very attentive and even gave good suggestions about where to grab after dinner drinks. The food came out at the perfect pace, cocktails came out with our appetizer, and dinner was ready promptly after we finished our appetizer. For our appetizer, we ordered the steak tartare. It was the right consistency and the steak cuts were well done(I've seen many restaurants where the cuts of tartare are larger chunks than they should be). For my main dish I ordered the short rib. It was so tender, I didnt need my knife at all--not even to hold the meat in place while i pulled it apart!! And the jus underneath the short ribs was heavenly. Rich and flavorful! Came here with my roomie with high expectations since it was highly recommended by a couple classmates who were in Tucson the rotation before. Atmosphere is beautiful. I love that it is near the train tracks by the Transportation Museum. So every 30 min to an hour or so, a train would rush by right next to the patio, which is a fun experience. (Loud, but fun!) They also had a live music the night we were there. Lovely date spot or happy hour stop. Food wise, the place is just meh. Nothing too special. I had the hh BURGER, which was a good size portion, but just your typical burger. My roommate had the MUSHROOM PIZZA, which she said was kinda on the dry side. We also shared the PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND MUSSELS, which I have to say was my favorite dish of the night. (But then again, who doesn't like butter and white wine with their mussels :D) Drinks are probably the reason behind all the hype here. They have a wide selection of wine and a few rotating beers on tap. We came at the perfect time because Friday nights they have the Maynard's summer wine tour. For like 10 bucks you can sample 4-5 wines. The night we were there the wines were from Portugal, which apparently is known for good and cheap wines! I didn't realize the lunch started at 11 AM as I didn't see any signage (although admittedly I can be pretty oblivious). Oh well, no big deal. I ordered the avocado toast instead and got a dirty chai. The service was good. The gentleman working the cash register was kind and friendly. He even offered to see if he could get me a lunch order depending on what I wanted, but he said that the items would not yet be prepared. I appreciated his effort and his efforts to try to help me. As far as the food, I only got the avocado toast. It was good, but I think a bit overpriced. It also took quite a while to get served to me (I was nearly finished with my large chai tea at this point). I also asked for a dirty chai, which I was assured they could do, but they only gave me a regular chai. It was barely warm when I picked it up right as they finished making it. I will give them that they have a really nice patio, so it's a nice spot to sit and enjoy your morning. If the trains come by though, it can get really loud and distracting. In all fairness, I didn't make any complaints while I was at the market, so they did not have an opportunity to address anything. I just didn't want to deal with it that day, although I'm sure the would have been nice and kind about it all. TLDR: Good, but overpriced. A little underwhelming. read more

I must say I was really disappointed. I love hotel congress, so I guess my expectations were too high. Service was good, no complaints there. All their sodas and beers are flat, like too hard to drink flat. Server says ppl say that all the time... But why hasn't anything changed?! I ordered the aged New York? Steak, the flavors were great but it was cold, really cold. I sent it back and when it came back it was luke warm, not really enjoyable. The potatoes were whipped in an cast iron pan and had zero flavor, reminded me of frozen food mashed potatoes. No seasoning at all. Brussel sprouts and huge cuts of bacon were really good, but I was the only one in my party that thought so. Mussels were disappointing. Also lacked flavor. Fries were really good. Burger was amazing. Salmon was good. Chicken and pasta dish was alright. My friends usually don't go out to nicer restaurants and I was really hoping to show them it's worth paying more money for amazing food, but sadly this wasn't the place for that. read more

As a wine lover, the wine of the day is a great deal as well as their wine club, and the recent "tour of California" wine event was a fun way to start my Friday nights, and just one example of the worthwhile events hosted by Maynards. The Kitchen The Kitchen is one of the best fine dining experiences in Downtown Tucson. For brunch, the baked eggs rival the Cup and I hate to admit I like Maynard's slightly more. I have not been as impressed with the dinner options on the menu in The Kitchen, but that is more due to my picky tastes rather than the fault of the amazing chef. I did not care for their version of Steak Tartare, but was impressed by the Niman Ranch Lamb Shank. The creme brulee was decent, but I prefer the desert elsewhere in town. The four stars I am giving Maynards are for the cocktail I had, a delectable libation combining crushed blackberries and whiskey. Potent, sexy and pretty to look at, it melded beautifully with the chic surroundings of Maynard's on a Friday night. Add to this a wild monsoon and you have a cinematic start to a night out. I've had dinner here a few times.. once for Thanksgiving ( it was such an amazing treat to not cook and enjoy the turkey yumminess ) I usually order the beet salad here and it is always delectable ! I was passing through Tucson last night when I got off the train to try this restaurant. I only went in for drinks and the Bartender (Sean) was extremely attentive. He was also extremely busy. The Martini (Bombay Sapphire with olives) was made to perfection. What was particularly impressive was when I ordered a belgian beer. This establishment, as most, will not carry Belgian beer glasses which I know would be pretty cumbersome. Sean immediately asked if I would like a wine glass or a snifter. NOW THAT IS PURE CLASS. Last night at Maynard's in Tucson I enjoyed one of the finest dining experiences I've had in years. Three of us went out to dinner to celebrate a belated Thanksgiving. We settled on Maynards after having read numerous glowing reviews. I'm so glad we went Two of us started the meal with an excellent Oregon Pinot Noir, while I ordered an Old Fashion cocktail. We all agreed that our drinks were excellent, and I truly appreciated that the glasses (both on the table and containing our drinks) were spotless! Our waiter, Jeff, was superb. He was attentive, but not obtrusive. He was knowledgeable about the menu, and gave us both clarifications and recommendations. He steered us to 3 excellent choices. One friend had the pork belly served on barbecued tepary beans with Swiss chard and cauliflower. The blend of flavors was outstanding. The large portion afforded leftovers! My other friend had the quail on a bed of lentils. Again, the flavors were just delightful. I had the butternut squash risotto with sautéed scallops. OMG , it was sooooo good. The risotto was rich and creamy with the yummy butternut flavor. The scallops were cooked to perfection. We finished this fabulous meal with creme brûlée, bread pudding, and chocolate martini. All three items were of the same quality as our entrees and just as delicious. On top of the outstanding food and service, the setting is divine with a retro "supper club" vibe. The glowing lamps on the tables, the immaculate glassware and flatware, the pressed linens - it was just beautiful. I live 150 miles from this restaurant, but I will absolutely return!! read more

I just had brunch with my wife at Maynard's Kitchen, for Valentine's Day. We had eggs benedict and beignets for our meal, and mimosas and a bellini for our beverages. I also had a cup of espresso. My wife's eggs benedict were better than mine, as she had bacon while I had crab-cakes. Although they were better, the bacon was a little dry and chewy. My crab-cakes were okay, not great, but the english muffin was a little charred, and left a burnt taste with every bite. Both eggs benedict were skimpy on hollandaise sauce. I had thought about having the omelet with lump crab meat, but I asked in what form the restaurant receives its crab meat. The waitress checked with the kitchen and then informed us the crab meat comes in a can. As I wanted crab, I thought the crab-cakes, which she said were made in the kitchen, were the better way to go. Our waitress was friendly, but not well trained. She didn't know the difference between a mimosa and a bellini, she didn't bring us any silverware with our beignets (we were sharing an order for dessert), she referred to the creme fraiche as whipped cream, and when I asked for a double espresso, she brought me a single espresso. For a restaurant that tries to market itself as a high-end dining establishment, the performance was poor to average, certainly not high-end. Five months ago, we visited with our daughter and our dog, sat outside, and had a wonderful brunch. I love the ambiance of Maynard's. You really do feel like you're at a train station, or when an actual train is rumbling and whistling as it's passing by and you happen to be seated at a booth next to the window, you almost feel as if you're on a train cart itself---it's a pretty nifty feeling. The restaurant is beautifully designed and is definitely a great spot for a romantic dinner if you're looking for an intimate setting. I came here for brunch with some girlfriends, and I wasn't sure if our waiter was new, forgetful, or just aloof. We each had to remind him a few times to bring things like straws or even cream for the coffee, and he gave us lots of apologies. The coffee itself was fragrant, rich, and delicious. For my meal, I ordered two eggs over medium with mushrooms, grilled country bread, duck fat breakfast potatoes and fresh fruit. The potatoes were my favorite part----they were greasy and packed with flavor. When everyone's meal first arrived at the table, my plate was mixed up with another girl's, and she had already started eating before we realized there was a mix-up. The waiter apologized and promptly placed another order for my plate. I was actually amazed at how quickly the plate came out from the kitchen, and I have to admit that I ended up eating two plates that morning. I was actually kind of glad that there was a mix-up, and I ended up with that extra plate, because the portions were pretty small, and I don't think I would have been full with just the one serving. I also noticed that the first plate had less potatoes than the second. The servings seemed inconsistent. When we paid for the bill, two girls at the table were shocked the next day when they looked at their credit card account activity. One of the girls saw that she had been charged $450 for her meal, and the other saw that she had been charged double. Frantically, a phone call was made to Maynard's, and they found out that there was a mix-up with the credit card swipes, and this had already been corrected on that same day. It would have been nice for the waiter to let the girls know ahead of time instead of having them flip out over the mis-billing. Alright here's what you need to know before going to eat at Maynard's market - MINIMUM time you must set aside for a lunch experience is about 45 minutes...and no, this is not an exaggeration. I have waited up to 25 mins for a sandwich, heck I've waited that long for a salad sometimes too. Not particularly anyone's fault for it taking so long, but also unclear as to why because a lot of the times I'm 1 of 3 people in there. I appreciate they have taken strides to eliminate plastic waste and I ESPECIALLY appreciate that the straws do not collapse like normal paper straws do. I think there's are made out of avocado pits or some such, idk. They used to have gum for sale by the register which they don't anymore and that is a bummer for me cus I work in the area and I'd like to freshen my breath before getting back to the office. They always have two soup options - one is a staple that doesn't change (currently a carrot veloute, which I'll be honest I have not even the slightest clue what that means) and then the other soup rotates. Wish it was always tomato soup cus that's just the best soup option, in my honest opinion...you just can't beat it. Staff is friendly and helpful. I came here for a friend's birthday dinner and heard a lot about this place from friends. So I decided to give it a try and recommended it to friend as a suggestion for her birthday dinner. The setting was nice. It definitely had that romantic atmosphere with the option of outside seating, live band and dim lighting. The only thing that I wasn't really excited about was that it is right next to a train station. Therefore every 15-30 minutes I would get startled by the trains horn and would have to hold my conversations for 5 mins until the train passed. On to the food...I've ordered the pan roasted duck and I was slightly disappointed as the duck was very chewy and tough. Usually I've eaten roasted ducks from other places however not only was it a little tough I didn't taste much of the flavor that was suppose to be induced into it therefore it tasted slightly bland. What made up for my main entree was the Devil's cake. At first sight, the cake looks really rich and the thought of it crossing my mind of "That's going to be one rich chocolate cake!" But when I tried it it actually tasted perfect. It didn't taste as rich as it looked and it was just delicious! I would definitely come back for the cake! I hate to not really give a good review of this place especially from all the hype but I'll be willing to revisit this place in the future and update my review if applicable. read more
