Probably the oldest bar in Eugene. There was a law that bars couldn't be too close to the University and this was as close as you could get. Hadn't been there for a while Went there for a beer or two after work, good happy hour, very relaxed. And you have to like it when one of the bar maids finishes her shift, goes around to the other side of the bar and has a drink. Kind of old, kind of funky, feels like a neighborhood bar back in Jersey. read more

Max's Tavern is exactly what you think it is. Don't expect anything more or less. Just order a beer and accept where you are in life.

Definitely a hit or miss place - don't show up sober when it's packed. In fact, get there earlier. If you like to end your night shouting/singing with a bunch of other drunkards, go for it. Another appeal of Max's is that it's not Taylors or Rennies - so keep that in mind. Above-average prices, but the service is generally friendly. It's much nicer to go in there for a beer after class as opposed to a night out. There's sometimes live music, which again is hit or miss. I've heard that it's the bar Moe's (of The Simpsons fame) was based on, but I've also heard that it isn't. Could go either way - a dive bar is a dive bar, after all. read more

I asked for a Cosmo, and was rather gruffly informed that Max's "doesn't do fancy drinks." I wasn't aware that a Cosmo was considered "fancy," especially since I saw all of the ingredients sitting on the bar. There was live music which was all right, a decent beer selection, and plenty of seating. All in all, it was all right. Not the best bar I've ever been to, but not the worst either. Just make sure that whatever drink you order has the name of the ingredients in the title. read more

Excellent service! The bar is packed and I've had no problem getting my drinks in a short amount of time...and they hand out free popcorn!

I can't speak for the selection or service because we never made it in the door. I hate to write a negative review of any business, but this experience was something else. My fiance and I are both 26 and have out-of-state Vermont IDs. We were on our way home from the Elton John concert, in a great mood, looking to grab a drink in the campus area while waiting for a cab to become available. We shared a beer at the show and were essentially sober, and had walked all the way from Matt Knight Arena. We passed by Max's and I suggested going inside. The bouncer, who was dawdling some distance away from the door, swooped in when he saw us eyeing up the place and informed us "I'll be checking your IDs tonight." OK, dude, no problem. My fiance hands his over, the guy scrutinizes it, bends it, looks at Colin, and after a while says point blank, "How much did you pay for this?" Are you kidding me?? I almost laughed because I thought he was joking, but I couldn't have been more wrong. Not only was it ludicrous to suggest Colin's ID was fake (neither of us have been refused since we moved to Oregon a few months ago), the manner in which the bouncer suggested it was rude and presumptuous. I quickly pulled out my own ID to make a point and handed it over, saying "I have one too, and they're real, see?" He did not see and continued to refuse us entry. We suggested he get his manager. The guy said his manager wasn't available but that they were on a group text, so he would text him. Ok.......very unprofessional. He starts fiddling with his phone, meanwhile we are standing in the rain waiting, and the guy is continuing to be rude. Finally, we demand the IDs back and say we don't even want to go inside anymore, judging by the way we are being treated. He won't hand them over and Colin began begging him to call the police who would respond more quickly so we could get our IDs back and gtfo. The guy refused and after at least 5 minutes finally went inside to find his manager. He eventually emerged, said "sorry, guys" and handed the IDs back. We laughed about this later, but it was an incredibly frustrating, unpleasant experience and a waste of time--we will not be back. I hope others new to Oregon fare better with this arrogant bouncer. read more

The bartender with a big black beard makes terrible drinks and is very rude. Won't be going back when he's serving drinks again.

For me & many others I'm sure Max's is well? it's nostalgic. I met my first girlfriend at Max's, her name's Hannah and she rocked! I still miss her & while there is and was always this Frat boy meet's townie vibe to the joint it's something that I personally have enjoyed. Tuesdays are trivial pursuit nights (very cool), and Sunday is the locals night & that's just well because well, that it is! Max's is a great place to see the duck games, Ward the owner makes free BBQ during the games (& he's good at it too! ) The staff are friendly some are even Hot, and of course there is free popcorn. I"d like to say overall it just may be one of the best drinking joints in town and they serve till true closing time. (Real time) not that pussy oh we want ta shut down cuz were tired crap. Seriously if your making kickass tips & the highest minimum wage in the country boo fucking who, suck it, and keep real bar hours bitch. Yes in short I like Max's. read more

This is the best tavern/bar in Eugene. And despite the fact they mainly serve beer, I keep coming back for the service. The bartenders remember your name, they give you what you ask for, and they're always on top of their job. Every bartender who works at this bar is without exception a cut above most of the bartenders in this town, or at least equal to the best ones at Rennie's, Good Times, and sometimes Taylor's. read more

Came here to visit a friend currently attending U of O. I am from LA so I have been to many good bars and many bad bars. Unfortunately this place was a big disappointment and I normally don't write bad reviews but dealing with with the unprofessional staff at this bar was ridiculous. I work in the bar/restaurant biz and I know what good service is even when it's busy. First off the door man is on some kind of power trip, being rude to even those clearly of age trying to spend money at this bar. That's not how you attract return customers. After the major hassle, we got in and attempted to order drinks, it took about 10-15 mins to get a drink. I ordered a Long Island, it was disgusting, it was very weak with way to much sweet and sour. I attempted to order a beer next but i tasted as if they don't clean their taps. I'm unsure about the health laws in Oregon but someone should really call a health inspector if they have those out there. When I went into the bathroom there was paper was the floor and there was pee everywhere. Overall just not a great experience. I went out to a few other bars the previous night, Remy's and Taylor's I think it was, they were both awesome, def recommend! read more

My father hung out at Max's when he was going to the U of O back in the 60's. I hung out there for several years in the 90's and early 2000's. Back in the 90's it was a wild place to hang out. Mellow in the afternoon, but after dark things would get crazy. We would ride our motorcycles through the bar, park them on the sidewalk and party until the placed closed. I was a lot younger and dumber in those days, but I sure had a great time. I'm the same age as the bar's owners and we have all mellowed with age and time. The bar did too. It went from being a total dive bar to still a bit of a dive bar, but the kind of dive bar you're not ashamed to take your parents to for a beer. I don't go there much anymore, simply because my life and location don't allow it, but when I do visit, I'm always greeted by someone I know from the old days and the bartenders are always friendly. I miss the old days, but I'm not young and crazy anymore and it's nice to have a quiet beer in an old-familiar place. I used to say that when I died, I was going to be cremated, have my ashes mixed into a gallon of paint and rolled on the ceiling at Max's. Who knows, maybe I still will. read more

Perfect bar for a college town. Great mix of patrons, not just students. The free popcorn is SOO good.

I used to drop by here to meet up with people but I never liked it much or at all really so I would leave and nobody else would stay either. No space to move around not due to the volume of people but the sheer lack of space. You have to list out any drink with more than one ingredient and they probably won't serve it anyway. Last I checked the shot glasses were too clunky to bomb in a pinter... What kinda dive slash college slash whatever they're trying to be bar denies even that? I would rather buy a beer next door at the food mart(enter in the back hah) and drink it in the alley with a local bum than here. I did that one time but didn't have a bottle opener so I asked a chick on their porch for a lighter and her snobby answer, "I don't smoke." As if I did or something (which I do cause it's awesome when you drink) but that's basically the crowd you'll find there. The owner is a straight lame, really full of himself just check his profile. His sons are brats too. No way do I want to fund daddy's trust with my hard earned cash. If you are a true local you know where the real shiznit goes down but to all you first timers maxs is an OK place to pop your cherry because if you start there it only gets better. read more

This is one of the worst bars I have ever been to. I have heard of this bar being so awesome and fun mutliple times and that is not the case. Over the past five years I have heard of Max's being the place to close down and sing 'Sweet Caroline" with everyone there. I decided to attend and I was shocked. I stood up on the table, like I heard that everyone does, and was told to sit down. I did was I was asked, and then 1:55 struck, and I asked if they were going to play sweet caroline. The Bartender told me that it would cost twenty dollars before he would play it, because he has to listen to that song every f***ing night and it would cost him money to play it. I was shocked. I was there with 6 other people and they said this was their first time experiencing that. I decided to go again, giving this place the benefit of the doubt... and what do you know, it happened again! I was shocked. I will NEVER go back and I know neither of my group will go again. This USED to be an awesome place to go until they got new bartenders who are breaking tradition. It really is unfortunate for everyone. read more

This is a prime example of why I avoid bars on campus. Walked in here on a Monday night around midnight. Steady, but not busy. It was me, my boyfriend, and our friend. Bartender asks for ID right when we walk in, no problem, than says he will be with us in a minute. 10 minutes go by and he comes for our drink order, not at a good pace. I have been a bartender at multiple places so you can say I have "bartender standers". He did not meet them at this point already. Ladies first, out friend orders a sailer jerry coke, he asks "single or double". We all look at each other and with and unspoken connection we all agree to get doubles to kick start our long evening with a strong first drink. I got Smirnoff soda and my partner a tanquaray tonic. We watch him pour. They were strong, but no stronger than a single drink at any downtown bar would be. He walked back to his POS system, I offered to buy the round, when he returns he said "that will be $36.50..... WHAT?!?! Yea. I fucking dive bar charged us over $12 a drink for a mid shelf "double". I have been charged that at a restaurant which makes sense, but a fucking shitty dive bar on campus!!!! Ugh! Remind me to never drink on campus again!! read more
