They are THE SWEETEST here. I've gone to Maximum F/X for the last 8 years and have had color, blowouts, facials, brows, haircuts etc. Every single stylist has been sweet, patient and committed to having you leave feeling great. Many of the stylists have been there for at least five years, which I think says a lot about the place. It is a clean, calm, cheerful environment. The prices are reasonable and blow outs are included with color and cuts. You will always get some little extra treat (a hand mask, eye treatment) and a complimentary hand massage 90% of the time. They always have current magazines and delicious hot tea. Jessica and Jordan both do great color. I've had cuts and blow outs from Molly and Kady and they are also awesome. No one pushes product too aggressively. Scottish (I think) woman at the front desk is hilarious and sweet. Only downside is they are closed Sunday and Monday and get a late start during the week (9 instead of my preferred 8). All in all, a consistently great experience! read more

I've contemplated setting up a Yelp account for awhile now just to leave reviews on places to eat but haven't really cared that much to do it. Then I realized Yelp offers reviews on everything, and after my experience at Maximum tonight I just had to sign up. I went into the Salon with my aunt and other friends and family; she is about to go through Chemo and decided to shave her hair before the Chemo forced her to and I literally cannot put into words how amazing the people were there. The staff is, not only beyond friendly and professional, but so sincere as well. They took an anxious, scary experience and turned it into something pretty special for all of us. They were so accommodating and kind and totally respected the personal nature of our visit; and didn't hesitate when my aunt asked if her daughter could make the first "cut". Move over Anne Sullivan! The real miracle workers are at Maximum FX salon on S. Congress. I've been going here for about two years for my color with Jessica, who is not only super sweet, but really listens to her clients, and always does a bang-up job with my highlights. I have very dark, naturally thick hair that Jessica manages to turn into a beautiful, chocolate mane with soft, caramel highlights. I'm telling you, this is not easy with my hair! And yet she does it every time. Plus, she gives you options and lets you know what will work and what's "risky"...she keeps the client in mind, and for that (and many other reasons), she is awesome. And now on to cuts....I had the pleasure of going to FX salon today after growing my hair out for the past few months. I made the mistake of "cheating" on them by going to another salon closer to my house for a quick trim....instead, I was butchered! After 6 months of letting my hair grow in and religiously downing 10.000 mgs of Biotin a day, I decided to book a cut w/ Javier, the senior stylist of FX salon. I was explicitly told he would be "more expensive", but given my last experience, I decided to dish out the cheddar. I could not be happier! I would gladly pay more and then some. Javier is a MIRACLE WORKER. Seriously. There should be statues around Austin erected in his honor. He took time looking at my scraggly layers, hair texture, face shape, etc. and gave me one of the best cuts I've EVER had. I'm so, so pleased with FX and if you go there, you will be too. Other bonuses: super friendly staff, can accommodate very early or relatively late schedules, great selection of magazines, convenient parking, no "product pushing" (its Aveda, they don't have to; the products speak for themselves), and they always let you know just how much you'll be paying for your services, working with your price range, etc (ie no hidden fees). read more

Wow! I'm a new fan. I went to Maximum FX because I had earned a gift certificate from Aveda's Pure Privilege program. I didn't know who to ask for so I just stuck with a price range. I was given the stylist Natalie. She was awesome! She kept me entertained with conversation while transforming my dead, boring hair into something great. I also got waxing services, which were extremely well done. The staff really take their time with you, making sure they understand your needs. I was suprised by this and very very pleased. On a recent visit to Austin, I did not get a chance to touch-up my hair color before leaving Phoenix. I relied on the Yelp community to help me out. Boy, was I not disappointed! The customer service in this salon is nothing short of AMAZING from the minute you walk in! The whole salon team seems to absolutely love being there. My shampoo was wonderful (including a hand massage) and haircut has never looked better! For not being in my home salon, this is the best hair color Austin has to offer. I left feeling like I could do a shampoo commercial! Next time am in town on business I am going to book a facial too! I bet they are fantastic! And, oh everything was reasonably priced. read more

I had a hair appointment today with Lauren and when I showed up they told me she would be about 15 minutes late arriving to the salon, annoying but oh well. 35 minutes later I had no update and she still hadn't shown up for my appointment so I left. What's worse, I typically go to the south congress location which is closed so drove 40 minutes north to keep my appointment, meaning they wasted 2 hours of my Saturday. Maybe the multiple call, text and email reminders I received about my appointment should have gone to my stylist as well. Needless to say I will never be coming back. read more

I've been going to Brittany at Maximum FX for about 5 years. First, let me state, that I LOVE Brittany. I seriously will not let anyone else touch my hair. I'm not naturally blonde, but I like to pretend I am. She makes me such a "natural" looking blonde..and always gives me the best hair cuts. I am regularly stopped by strangers to ask who does my color - and when they go to her they are always pleased. Brit also won't let me follow every crazy whim that pops in my head - like the perm I begged for. She keeps my head on my shoulders, and helps guide me into a better looking me. I also love Holly, who works behind the scenes and sometimes mans the front desk. The entire staff has always been more than willing to work around my crazy schedule, and work to fit me in with Brit. Everyone in the salon always remembers my name - and it's a small thing, but I love it. They have an incredible attention to detail - down to hand massages while you have your hair blown out and little make up refreshers before you leave. It's a nice touch. Another little treat; sometimes, on Saturday mornings they have mimosas floating around. Yum! If any, my only complaint about the salon, is that the owners seem to be trying to turn it into a salon that's more New York than Austin. Keep it Austin! read more

My haircut started off with a glass of wine and a head massage. Need I say more? Okay fine, Molly have me a great haircut and advice on growing my hair out into the style I ultimately want as well as a complimentary temple massage after she washed my hair and a second glass of wine. The receptionist, Linda, later gave me a hand massage while Molly did her thing. Guys, I'm not making this up. It's rare to find reasonable prices with talented AND genuinely friendly staff. The service and staff are amazing at this salon. I went in for a hair consultation to correct years of over processed blonde highlights. Jordan listened to what I wanted and did an amazing job. My hair looks amazing, the color came out perfect and it looks healthier already with the conditioning treatment that was done at the same time. I have been trying to grow my hair out for awhile and Kady listened to what I wanted, trimmed off the damaged ends and layered my hair so it is easy to manage and looks great. I love that I can go in, get my hair colored, cut and get my brows done at the same time. The additional treatments and added touches like a glass of wine, tea or mimosas make you feel pampered. I hate giving this place such low stars, but I think its the best they deserve. I had high hopes, really. The desk staff was great and super friendly. The salon itself is really nice and warm. I think I may have gotten a newbie pedicurist though. I don't want to single her out, but just mention you want someone with some experience. Super light touch (somewhat annoyingly so), talked a lot, polish on my skin even after she was done, uneven color on the toes were my issues. Also, this was the FASTEST pedicure on the planet! I was there barely 20 minutes. I did try to remedy some of my "issues" with what was going on, but she was so sweet and meek--I felt bad when I asked her to redo or fix some things. I am sure she will get better with experience--I just wish I would have done something different or said something at the desk. Maybe I should just stick with mall nail places! read more

After a terrible haircut at a well-regarded salon downtown, I read reviews here and elsewhere looking for a perfect new salon. After my first visit, I know I found it. Michelle did my color and gave me what everyone considers my best haircut ever! I am extremely pleased. It's a relatively time-intensive, complicated cut. She listened carefully to what I wanted and did it better than I had hoped (and better than I asked, frankly). Her suggestions on color and cut were great. The atmosphere was very collegial and I enjoyed hearing the stylists consult with each other. It made me feel even more confident about the service they were providing. Tess did my brows and they have never looked better. I wanted something extremely natural and now I look like the best me. The service overall was excellent. There was no hardsell for product. The price was extremely reasonable ($45 for the cut, $75 for color). Parking was a breeze behind the salon and there were spots available on South Congress. I am probably digging my own grave by writing this glowing review of him, because soon he will be booked all the time and unavailable. But as of right now, I can call him and get an appointment the same week and sometimes the same day. He gives me great hair cuts that are stylish...he keeps up with trends. I can go in and not know what I want, and he'll have good ideas that match my personal style. Also, he has good b.s., but he won't chat my ear off if I am not in the mood to talk! The front desk girl was rude and snobby.. and it was $19 to get an EYEBROW wax (and the website said $15) the money wasn't really the issue but I am a firm believer in good customer service (as I worked in the restaurant industry for 5 years) there was no warm welcoming feeling when you walked in. i actually felt like the were looking down on me or something. I used to get my haircut at MaximumFX, but then my stylist left. And given the other annoying aspects of the salon, I'm not going back. Don't get me wrong: I would go back if the stylist I trusted was there. But the salon's strong up-sell really bothers me. Every time I've gone, they've given me a basket with "recommended products" and given me a hard sell at the register when I said I didn't want to purchase them. They're also big on pushing side services (would you like a hand massage? and eye brow wax? etc), which would be ok if they weren't so insistent. And some of the receptionists are less than polite. Not horribly caustic, but just less than helpful If you can get past all that and find a stylist you like, it's a fine place for a haircut or color. But I figure there are other salons in Austin with equally good stylists and without the annoying sales tactics. read more

Racially Profiled. I visited this salon today to purchase the Overtone hair coloring conditioner. Upon entering, the person working at the front -- a white woman with dark red hair and bangs -- looked me up and down as I asked her where I could find the product. She hesitantly led me to the section and asked me what I color I was looking for. I told her I still haven't decided. The store is small, so I could feel her literally standing directly behind me watching me. She then decided to change the bag in a tiny trash can that happened to be right behind me. I picked up the color I wanted and turned around quickly with the intention to catch her staring at me -- and I did. She was literally watching my hands. She looked slightly embarrassed. It was so obvious, I noticed even the hair stylists saw what happened. I wanted to put the product down and walk away, but I bought it and cordially left. I came to this location to get it because it's so close to where I live, but next time I need Overtone, I'll be going to another local retailer like Litter Sister Salon. read more

I started going to this place about five years ago. Unfortunatel, their prices have skyrocketed. I started with a stylist then for $35...when her prices went up past $50, they honored a price of $45 for me, but for some reason, they recently started to charge me the full $55 for a haircut with her. I struggle with paying that much for what is arguably the best haircuts I get. I just don't feel very appreciated when prices are jacked up on me. I've started to look elsewhere for a cheaper stylist, even if it means getting my hair butchered. :-( read more

I have been going here off and on for 6 years. They have been pretty consistent with giving a good and not too expensive haircut. Though I have had a few bad haircuts/highlight jobs but they were mostly with newer employees. I decided to get highlights to make my brown hair a little more exciting so I needed to find a trustworthy salon. I looked online for an Aveda salon because I knew that they have great products. I booked an appt, through their website, for an appt with Christen. I was nervous because I had never been there before but when I went in she did exactly what I wanted. I got highlights and low lights and I loved them. I used to have very blonde hair and I let her know that in no way did I want that again. She listened to what i wanted and explained the process she was going to use on my hair. At this salon they also go over the pricing before the process starts so there are no surprises at the checkout. I thought this was a great idea. I would give Molly and Jessica 100 stars if I could! I first started seeing Molly for haircuts and from the very first time I got in her chair, she has given me exactly what I want. Sometimes, I don't even know what I want but she somehow gives me something perfect every time! I have showed her a picture from Pinterest before and she was able to make it look just like the picture - that never happens! Sabrina has also cut my hair and she is just as talented! Probably a year after I had started getting my haircut there, I branched out for some color. Jessica is amazing at what she does! My last color was something I was very scared to even ask for but she gave me the "rose gold ombre" I had dreamed up in my head and it is so perfect. I always leave there feeling so confident, and after getting my rose gold do' I was down right giddy leaving the salon. The actual salon is awesome as well. It smells SO good because of the Aveda products they use. You get to pick a mini-treatment (temple massage, hot towel wrap, etc.). You get a hand massage during blow-dry. Mimosas on Saturdays. The shampoo area is just about the most relaxing area you can imagine. Its SO much more than just a haircut/color and that's why I look forward to my appointments so much. For all of the services you are getting, I think the prices are very reasonable. I also really really like that they do not rush through anything. They finish their job completely. I've been to salons where they don't really style your hair properly because they have someone else waiting. They do everything 100%, every single time. I have never seen an unhappy client in there. I used to visit Maximum FX Salon at The Domain but I recently moved closer to Downtown so decided to come here. I'm so happy this place is also as good as the one at the Domain. I love how Maximum FX Salon is very reasonably priced and yet makes you feel like a million bucks when you leave the place. She even recommended a few everyday use products to make my hair look fab and it has made such a difference!
