I'm obsessed with Brittany! I'm super particular about my haircuts because I do have mixed Asian American hair, so it's thicker but has more texture than traditional Asian hair. She does a great job of listening to exactly what I want and not overstepping boundaries. I don't do any dramatic hair cuts but love a good couple inches off every few months and face framing more curtain styled longer bangs. They include a very relaxing hair wash and head massage for your first cut! After just the hair wash and you also get to choose a scent to relax too! I booked this salon because I love Aveda products and I pass by it frequently - I was so pleased with my experience this morning with Javier. When I came in I had longggg, gangly hair full of split ends that hasn't been cut in 1.5 years, and I left with luscious, shiny layers and a smile on my face. I felt Javier listened to what I wanted and I really loved my cut. The added lavender temple massage was a real treat after a hectic few weeks. Also, I was not feeling very chatty this morning, so I really appreciated that he picked that up and just let me hang out quietly while he went to work. I responded from a stylist on Facebook that needed some models for a haircut. I was super excited. I got there 5 minutes early. The receptionist told me the owner sent the stylist on an errand. I thought how strange...I made it here on time. 15 minutes later still not there. I decided my time is more valuable. The stylist sent me a message through messenger 19 minutes past appt. Worst blow out I've ever gotten, save yourself some time and don't come here! Not worth the time or money. Everything started great; wine, scalp massage, was expecting a nice blow but it literally looks like I drunkenly attempted to dry my hair. When the hairdresser started with my hair, I requested for him to blow it out instead of in, he completely ignored me. When he was less than halfway done, I asked him again, he clearly became upset and turned up the heat and kept doing EXACTLY WHAT HE WAS DOING BEFORE, just on higher heat! Came here for a consultation for full highlights. Robert told me it came out to $320 with add on and everything. I expected this price and simply said okay and that I was going to make an appointment. While going to the cash register he asked me "What do you do? Do you work?" and eyed me up and down. I am young, I am a woman of color, and I am professional. This question was as if he was asking "How can you pay for this?" And it felt borderline racist. I told my friend, who had gotten a color treatment done here, what has happened and she said he had asked her this same question as well. She is also a person of color. I doubt white people are asked this question at the cash register. Needless to say, I did not end up going to my appointment. It did not feel right for me to give money to a place that judges others. If you are a person of color I suggest finding another salon before they assume you can't pay for their services. read more

I'm new to Austin and was looking for a stylist who could do natural black hair. Daunting. I have type 3b/c and it was over processed because I had dyed it a lovely lavender color. I happened to see MFX on Facebook, and the loads of positive reviews. I checked their locations and booked with Sabrina on Congress. I'm so glad I did. Sabrina is more than capable of doing natural hair; she has natural hair herself that's more tightly coiled than mine. She's friendly, and has always listened and delivered exactly what I wanted. I've seen her for about 6 months now, and I've found my hairdresser. She has my hair looking great. She did a great job to hook up my hair when it was a cute bob, and now as I maintain a pixie for this hot summer. The haircuts are affordable, none of the $100+ stuff I've seen to do curly hair. They also do really amazing color here -- I'm solidly brunette, and they kept my hair looking naturally blonde for years (good thing I grew out of that phase). I've been seeing Kady for over 7 years. I love her. The salon employees are always very helpful when trying to schedule and kind when I inevitably have to change appointments. They always know my name and mimosas on Saturday is a nice touch. I do wish there were more loyalty rewards or something. I am only speaking from a guy's haircut point-of-view here, but I think this is a decent, and unfortunately nothing more, place to get a haircut. The location is convenient, and it is priced fairly (make sure to pay attention to the different levels of stylist . . . some are very expensive). But it doesn't wow me in any way. They seem hurried most of the time, the level of service from the front desk to the standard amenities (shampoo, head massage, style) are inconsistent and the staff seem to view them as a nuisance. All this in addition to the fact that their turnover is EXTREMELY high, so good luck finding someone to cut your hair that will be their 2 cuts from now. I went through three people before becoming fed up with this place. I switched to a certain 2-letter salon on Burnet and have been 100% more satisfied, value and service-wise. This place is fantastic! Went in to get my hair colored by Sterling and she did a great job. I've rarely left a salon absolutely loving my color or cut and today I did. She got me exactly the color I wanted. On top of that I got a relaxing facial wrap while I was getting shampooed and a hand massage while I was getting my blow out, completely free! The free mimosas were a nice touch too. Everyone there is super friendly and they got me in and out on time. A lot of people don't know this place offers free cuts on Tuesdays and Thursdays, as well as free coloring on Wednesdays. The students practice on you gratis, but it's a risk. I came out with an okay haircut that I'll probably get fixed, but my hairdresser was so kind and sweet I'm glad I did him the favor. Then I came to Maximum FX salon and met Cade, who is some kind of hair wizard. He asked if I only wore my hair curly or if I also flat-ironed it sometimes, which is an important question that shows he had a strategy. He spent almost an hour perfectly stacking the backk of my hair, people. Another cool thing, which had almost nothing to do with my hair, is that Cade and the salon in general seem interested in community service and involvement. They are currently sending all the hair scraps to be used to clean up the oil spill in the Gulf, and when I asked Cade what he was doing over the weekend he talked about some of the volunteering he'll be doing locally. I knew before I walked out of the salon that this is where I would be getting my hair cut for my entire stint in Austin, however long it may be! read more

For Christmas, my darling sister purchased a gift package for me that consisted of a 30 min massage, a full natural elements facial and body scrub, with a manicure and pedicure. My facial, done by Tess Lyon was EXCELLENT... It was the best ever and I walked out of her room feel brand new... She really did a lot of work on my face and gave me a body wrap and and body polish.... It felt like it took years off of me... I am making an appointment as I speak. Working in Hospitality, I can honestly say, it lifted that large load I carry on my back.... My massage was done by a man although I cant remember his name. I wouldnt really recommend him unless you enjoy a rough massage. I am a petite female weighing in near 110 pounds and my 5' tall body felt like it was taking more of a push and hard beating than a 30 minute massage. My manicure and pedicure was done by Norma Boone. She is studying reflexology and offers it complimentary while she is working on your hands and feet.... I never wanted her to let go of them. She gave me a nice polish and I apologized for my sad nubs that I like to refer to as feet. I'm sure that they were gross being sandwiched in tennis shoes more than 12 hours a day, but she never complained once..... She asked me questions, talked to me like a normal person and was sooo pleasant. Overall.... I loved the trip. I would do it again... The only cons I have are that some of the services are a bit expensive, but then again..... spas arent for everyone on a daily basis and thats what makes them a spa. I've been going to Maximum FX since it was located on the drag in 2000/2001. The haircuts are decent, and not too pricey ($30-50 depending on who you get) and they come with little perks like a hand massage or a hot towel deep conditioning wrap. I've tried the massages, the pedicures, and the color service, but my main reason for going back time and time again is Tess who does waxing. She's kind, she's gentle, she's quick, and she does a great job time and time again. I know I can get your run-of-the-mill eyebrow waxes at just about any nail salon for 5 bucks cheaper, but I'll tell you that Tess is worth it. I feel bad about the low stars some people have given Max Fx, and I know that some salons are a bit, well, snooty-- but I promise Tess will be worth every penny for all of your waxing needs, and you'll end up becoming a regular like I have. Oh! A great bonus-- you can sign up to use their website when you go into the salon. Then you can use their online booking service. I like being able to set up several appointments at once (and booking a haircut/wax/pedi back-to-back when needed). I moved from Chicago to Austin last year. I have trusted the same person with my hair for about 15 years, so needless to say I was weary about finding someone new. I had put off finding someone for awhile, and just got my hair done when I went home to visit. I have thick, wavy, curly, dry hair with a mind if it's own so it requires someone skilled to make it look presentable. Enter Sabrina: I met Sabrina and her bubbly personality and friendliness was extremely comforting and welcoming. I immediately felt like I could trust her. When you can't clearly recall the last day you wore your looooong hair in anything but a ponytail or hidden under a cap (or, frequently, both), it's time for a cut. Fortunately I lucked upon a call for long hair models by Natalie N. She patiently assessed both the attributes of my hair (long, straight, in need of a trim, blah) and my desired outcomes of the cut (healthier hair, minimal styling time, decent-lookin'). Let me add that when i say 'minimal styling time', what i really mean is 'this hair might get combed'. Blowers, irons, extensive styling products...what are those?!? I must be a nightmare to hairstylists, asking for a cut that looks great after drip-drying, with absolutely no effort on my part. But (...drumroll...) Natalie succeeded on every count! She trimmed off a few inches, checking in with me that she wasn't taking off too much length, then carefully added some face-framing layers and side-swept bangs. Then she styled and dried my hair and i walked out of there looking fantastic. Thanks, Natalie N...i'll be back! On other fronts, the salon itself is attractive, plays good music, and offers ample people- and street-watching through its front wall of glass (far more interesting than staring at yourself in the mirror for an hour). The Aveda products they use smell great, the complimentary hand massage was sooooo nice and relaxing, and while suggestions were made there was no hard push on the products. p.s.--I should say 'exceeded' rather than 'succeeded', because lately i've been plonking my bike helmet over wet hair and riding around town, and when i take the helmet off my hair is dry and looks amazing. I have curly hair, and have received many a bad hair cut, but Brooke only does wonderful work. Not good, not average, but i-love-my-hair awesome work. Kat waxes me. How do you compliment someone when they yank hair out of your skin? Easy to do with Kat. Not only does she do an awesome job, but no matter where she's waxing, she is professional and friendly and manages to make me feel comfortable and relaxed. Why only 4 stars? I'm a cheap-ass. Maximum FX was my go-to place for a cut back in the days of living at home and no bills but in recent years I've admittedly cheaped out on my 'do and opted for groupon deals and beauty school cuts. One of these deals led me to hair stylist Kendra who worked some magic on my hair and I was hooked. When I found that she was now at MFX I was ecstatic. MFX is an Aveda salon so all the products smell wonderful and calming which imparts a similar effect on the whole salon. The prices are quite reasonable for a women's cut and they have a range of skilled stylists at different price-points. With every cut you get to choose an "experience" of a quick treatment of some sort during the hair washing which is a nice little bonus. Parking hasn't been an issue since there is a lot in the back for business patrons during the day. I've gotten more compliments on my recent cut than on many previous ones combined. I almost wish my hair would grow faster so I can go back now! read more

The coolest thing about this place is that you can price your own haircut. The only thing is, you really get what you pay for. I have had a horrible cut here, and I've had another one that made my boyfriend's jaw hit the floor. So, if you have the money to spend, get one of the managers to do it because the last time I went here I told the hairdresser I wanted face framing layers, and she gave me layers all around. Which are *SO* hard to grow out if you have my hair. But the first hair cut I got here was fantastic. My hair was perfect, and it grew in so nicely. However, its amazing how many ways a stylist can misinterpret what you ask for (two inches means two inches...not four!) It took me two years of blah/horrible haircuts to find Heather at Maximum FX. She listens to what I need and then does it....in a friendly but professional manner. And for a very reasonable price ($40). I went to this salon all the time to get my hair done when I lived in Austin. I used to get highlights and my hair cut. The highlights always looked brilliant and the haircut was always amazing. I was in Austin for a wedding on 9/13 and made a last minute appointment at Maximum FX after another salon canceled on me at the last minute. I requested to have my hair curled with a flat iron and they made an appointment with a stylist who was supposedly great at flat iron curls. Unfortunately I didn't get to meet her because she was cutting another client's hair and was running very late. While they figured out a solution, the staff at Maximum FX gave me a mimosa! Within 5 minutes, they found me another stylist, Molly. She wasn't able to do flat iron curls, which was a bummer because those hold better on my hair. She was super friendly, told me a ton of things to do in Austin, and did an amazing job curling my hair. She didn't skimp on the hairspray, so it stayed all night! I have been getting my hair cut at MaximumFX for several years with several different stylists. There was a period of higher turnover a few years ago, but I'm hoping that luck is on my side and my current team stays since I LOVE them. Melinda has transitioned from doing all services to focusing on cuts and if go to visit her, you'll know why. This lady knows haircuts. She's fun and engaging and is very client-focused. When I told her my hair tends to go gold but I want cool white tones only, she walked me through why my hair might be doing such a horrid thing and what we can do to combat the gold. This is far more than: " You should use blue shampoo and conditioner." Come on, give me a little credit- I'm a brunette underneath it all, I'm not dumb. She also consulted me in-depth on my cut and where I want to be in 2, 6, and 12 months from now. This is one of the reasons I highly recommend her to all of my close friends for cuts because she looks beyond the current state of your mane and makes you think about goals you didn't even know you had for your locks! Since Melinda is focusing on the shears now, she transitioned me on color to Jessica who is fantastic. Melinda spent the better part of an hour walking Jessica through my likes and dislikes ("don't even talk to her about gold tones, it ain't happenin'.") and talking about the aforementioned color goals for the remainder of 2010. Jessica is one of the fastest colorists I've ever seen (my thick hair appreciates the highly sought-after speed of a professional) and my color is exactly what I asked for. These gals are certain to keep you realistic, but also trust that you know what you want. They style and see my hair once every six weeks while I live with it daily. They understand that I love white blonde hair and have naturally quite dark brunette coloring, and instead of discouraging my ideas they work with me to make it happen and keep it healthy. One of my biggest complaints about many stylists is that they make you feel bad about your color/cut choices past and present, knock the stylists that have come before them for technique or style, and imply that you should have been to see them sooner. At MaximumFX I never feel that way and I think it speaks volumes about the Aveda family- they trust your instincts and don't make you feel uncomfortable even if you've waited too long for a cut or color touch-up... and come on, we are all guilty of doing that on occasion. read more

They are THE SWEETEST here. I've gone to Maximum F/X for the last 8 years and have had color, blowouts, facials, brows, haircuts etc. Every single stylist has been sweet, patient and committed to having you leave feeling great. Many of the stylists have been there for at least five years, which I think says a lot about the place. It is a clean, calm, cheerful environment. The prices are reasonable and blow outs are included with color and cuts. You will always get some little extra treat (a hand mask, eye treatment) and a complimentary hand massage 90% of the time. They always have current magazines and delicious hot tea. Jessica and Jordan both do great color. I've had cuts and blow outs from Molly and Kady and they are also awesome. No one pushes product too aggressively. Scottish (I think) woman at the front desk is hilarious and sweet. Only downside is they are closed Sunday and Monday and get a late start during the week (9 instead of my preferred 8). All in all, a consistently great experience! read more
