I've been a client at Salon Sovay for almost 4 years now, so this review is overdue. I've had some pretty terrible hair experiences so I'm super cautious and get major anxiety every time I move. And I've moved cities about 8 times post college. Finding someone who does a natural looking blonde highlight is pretty difficult to find. I absolutely hate chunky highlights and brassy overtones. I also hate uniform color highlights. You will get none of those with Sovay. I'm so glad that I found Sovay and highly recommend her, especially if you have blonde hair. She is a hair wizard! She is especially detail oriented and is very skilled at a multi-dimensional light blonde. Her cuts are also fantastic - nice long layers and framing. Since going to Sovay, my hair is much longer and healthier. Please go experience Shea!!! I recently got my hair cut and want to go get it cut again just because it was so fun!! I waited a few days to write this review because I wanted to make sure I was loving it as much as I expected. My expectations are exceeded. I've always wanted to just walk into a salon, have full trust in my stylist and say "make me pretty!" I explained how I lost my hair after giving birth. I explained how I wanted life to my hair, style while it grows out of the awkward stage, and something low maintenance because I am very busy with a toddler. Shea looked at me, knew exactly what my hair needed and finished with a lesson on how to style it and to "let my hair do the work". Y'all!! I am telling you I have NEVER experienced such a great haircut. Blowdrying my hair takes literally less than 15 minutes and I have fun doing it. It has never looked so full in my life. She somehow cut it so that it thins my face! Shea has a history of teaching in NYC, but some people just have that special touch and eye and know what to do. Shea is that person WITH a great background! She is literally my dream stylist. I was recommend to check this place out from yelper Catherine T. For reference, I have fine hair that is very stubborn which loves to be frizzy (cant wait for Texas summers), 2 cowlicks, and lack of volume. Salon Solvay is easy to find and located on the southside of Austin. The parking lot I will say is super small and can be hard to get in and out if someone is also coming or going. I walked into the salon and sat down in the lounge area. I was greeted in less than a few minutes by Shea. She greeted me and got me a bottle of water and said she will be with me in a few minutes. Our appointment started on time and she first did a consult with myself and my hair. We talked about the current status of my hair and what i wanted to achieve. My hair unfortunately hadn't been touched since November due to just moving here and other various reasons. We came up with a plan together and took a nice much need 1-2 inches off my hair. Shea was not a product pusher which I liked. I told her what products I currently use and she was happy. I think it also helped because I am an esthetician and can purchase many hair and skincare products for discounted prices. Shea was very friendly and we had a lot to talk about since she and I have had some international traveling experience. Honestly I love to talk about traveling so it was nice to have someone else to talk to besides my husband. haha I have another appointment set up in a few months so I can get some much needed highlights. Thank goodness I found Sovay when I moved here in April of this year!!! I had already gone through a couple consults, because I was determined to find the perfect new salon home in Austin. Once I met a Sovay, I knew she was the one! You will too! A little about my hair: My hair has always been very fine, thin, and fragile. I don't think I even had any hair until I was about 4! Seriously. My Mom got my ears pierced so people would know I was a girl. Ha I always hated my hair and had the hardest time getting it any sort of acceptable where I wasn't self conscious. It's never been long. It's never been pretty, even with the most effort. Even when I got my hair done, I would go home and redo it myself. No one could make it look pretty, even stylists at the salons I went to growing up. About 6 years ago, my Dad agreed to buy me extensions for Christmas, so I could finally have the long and pretty hair I could never have naturally. I went to a salon(in Atlanta) based on a referral. The extensions were long, and pretty, and exciting, and didn't blend in with my shoulder length hair that flipped out. I asked the stylist for help blending, so she thinned my natural hair so you couldn't see it. I've been trying to correct this EVER SINCE. Unfortunately, I used hot fusion extensions(because I didn't know better)for the next several years, which caused my hair to break and thin even more. The last year or two I have been using cold fusion extensions and making a little progress with getting my hair healthy. Since I started seeing Sovay in April, using hot head extensions, and following her AMAZING advice(listen to anything she tells you!), she has done more for my hair and gotten it healthier than I(or anyone else) has been able to in the last 6 years!!! This is huge! Finally, I don't feel like a prisoner of my extensions. I was always terrified of the day I couldn't afford extensions and was forced to just have my hair, or what little was left. It would have been unbearable. Now, I finally feel like the extensions are for fun again and not completely out of necessity. We have a ways to go, but I know Sovay will have my hair healthier, longer, and more beautiful than it has EVER been before! Not only is Sovay insanely talented, she is also caring to her core, full of amazing knowledge and advice(she's always willing to share! Listen! It works!), and will quickly become someone you consider a friend! I recommend Sovay, and anyone she chooses to work beside, to anyone and everyone! You *know* you have a great haircut when it looks good no matter what state it's in, dry or wet, straight or curly, pulled back or left hanging down, blown out or air dried. Shea McJagger knows how to work this magic and I'm soooo excited to now be on her client list! Ever have one of those nightmares where someone pretty much ruins your hair? I had recklessly gone on a whim to a new hair place that was close to my North Austin home-work travel path, hoping to establish a relationship with a more convenient salon than my usual downtown high end place (which requires 6 week advance appointments and has climbed up to over $230 per visit since I first started there). Yes, of course I read the Yelp reviews on the new place and everything seemed good, but things did not go well for me in this experiment with someone who claimed 15 years of experience in the hair industry. After showing pictures and asking for a basic partial highlight with face-framing layers on my all-one-length past-the-shoulders hair, I was left with a horrible, choppy cut and the worst stripey highlights I've ever received in more than 20 years of having my hair colored. I was worried that I'd have to go really short to correct the damage. I also wasn't sure I could stand to wait to get this mess fixed! Like a ray of sunshine parting the clouds as an angel choir sings, the very next day I saw the Yelp Review of the Day on Salon Sovay. Checking out all the glowing reviews led me to the Salon Sovay website where I read about each of the resident independent stylists. Shea's bio page http://mcjaggersalon.com/ revealed not only an accomplished master hair designer but also an artist, photographer, yoga teacher, and world traveler. Shea sounded like an interesting person with whom I'd enjoy spending several hours each year, and more importantly, someone who could solve my hair emergency right away, so I gave her a call. Shea texted me down off the ledge and suggested I come in right away for a brief consultation to assess the damage. While she agreed that the highlight job was pretty bad, she said the haircut had good basic structure and would only require a bit of touching up & blending to take out the heavy "thunks" and provide the shape I wanted without sacrificing any length. Even better, she said she'd be able to rehab the color job and reduce the stark transitions between the various shades of blonde, as well as to make the approach to my scalp less obvious. I just had to sit tight for 2 weeks until my full appointment date. Fourteen agonizing days of pony tails later, Shea applied her skills to my head and totally transformed my look. The appointment took 4 (!!) hours due to the very careful placement of the rehab color and the detailed attention to re-doing my cut, but I couldn't be happier. I was almost tearful seeing the results and probably would have paid any $ amount at this point, but Shea just gave me her usual bottom pricing for cut & partial highlight ($175), with no pressure on product sales, either. Yep, it looks like I'm still going to be a "drive downtown to get my hair done" lady. Shea responds to texts day or night and encourages clients to contact her directly to schedule appointments. For every 3 clients you refer via her Karma card program, you'll receive a free haircut. She never rushes through appointments, and really listens to her client's concerns. It's refreshing to interact with a professional who truly takes pride in their work :) I've yet to take advantage of her offers for free bang trims, etc. in between appointments, but she definitely always offers them. Back in June, when I was asked to model for the Yelp fashion show, I presented Angela (who at the time was at the now defunct Anne Kelso Salon) with the idea of changing me from a bright blonde to a sassy redhead. I wanted to refresh my color and possibly recreate the retro style that I wore in the fashion show for the Yelp Elite event at The Highball. Angela fit me in during a weekday, and I found myself at her adorable new home at Salon Sovay. It's so cute! She even has her own well-lit, private room. We discussed what I was wanting (cooler, darker red that still had a decidedly "fashion-y" feel to it; "fashion-y" is a stylist term that almost reminds me of "pitch-y" in it's colloquialism). We chatted as she worked about how she had been and what had been going on in my life as well since we had last seen each other. She has her Austin Fashion Awards golden boot sitting proudly on her table. Angela loves her some Kevin Murphy products...she's almost like a groupie. But for good reason. I don't know what she put in my hair to set it with rollers, but the roller set you see in the photo I attached last for THREE DAYS. And I didn't even have to sleep standing up. It was amazing. I made an account just because of a negative review I saw after recommending a close friend to Sovay. I am a brand new client! I went for my first time to see Sovay after hearing of "The Great Sovay" for years. I was (jokingly) told to not tell her what I needed, but to just say "Make me look good!" and wow am I ever glad I did! Stylists typically have to use tons of product, because of how thick my hair is (and they tell me!.) I'm used to enjoying haircuts, and love socializing...I don't think I've ever had a horrible haircut-highlights are another story-...just a string of pretty good ones. I left with the best haircut and color I have ever had. It's looking better and better as it grows out a bit, and I'm getting more compliments than I did on day one! Sovay didn't push product on me, she didn't say anything about how thick my hair is, or how long it took to process. When I scheduled my appointment (by text) It was confirmed with a message back.
