I love Mint! I started going there nearly 20 years ago. I had the same stylist for years. I followed her when she opened her own place, but in the last few years she moved out of town. I immediately went back to Mint and am lucky enough to work with a stylist who has been there as long as I've been going there-Macari is amazing! This is a solid place with friendly people and very talented stylists. The older building provides high ceilings and the white and mint paint job presents a cool and fresh space. It always feels open and airy, which is especially important during this pandemic. The Covid protocols here are outstanding: everyone is wearing masks, stations are spaced out (it seems that every other station is empty to ensure social distancing), and the place is spotless. The owner of the business, Melissa, is always so friendly and kind. She remembered me after I hadn't been there in several years. It really felt like going home to return back to this amazing place. Buyer beware. The services here are not 'so spectacular' that they justify the exorbitant costs- and with *literally* no breakdown or justification for WHY. In fact, if the almost DOUBLING of prices (or at the least; $90-$100 tacked on), it is certainly not explained or advertised on the website. This is shady at best. I was told that "prices are going up" and that my next service would be "$390+". For what? Where are the line items or cost breakdown? -The staff (with the exception of a couple of people ) are also seemingly trapped in a (name any) episode of "we're-trying-to-prove-ourselves-to-be-trendy-and-snobby-'big city'-personality TV show, with little regard of why people might be frustrated or have their own stresses going on. Mint Salon: Don't take out your prices on your customers. If you need to stick to the Westlake entitled crowd - that doesn't make them any less dumb for overpaying for a haircut and color. I have not found a more delightful salon in Austin than Mint. I don't tend to be a hairstylist loyalist (since the amazing Roland Deldgado at Needless Markup--our old nickname for Neiman Marcus at the Galleria in Houston--died tragically in 1994 after perming my hair all through my crazy '80s teen years). So I'll be the first to admit I've been around a bit. But I seem to always come back to Mint. Perhaps Mint is my Austin-salon soul mate I cannot live without. Perhaps I just need to admit that and commit. I've never had a bad haircut there; however, the last time I was in, I was fortunate to have been paired with Vanessa Gray. While she was pleasant, she didn't offer me an endless barrage of questions about myself (that is, I didn't feel like I had to tell her my entire life story at our first meeting). In the midst of a busy day, I found this comforting. But the main thing? She read me right and gave me a fantastic cut. If you want that feeling of being immediate BFFs with your stylist, which I've sometimes found a bit insincere (and which I think must be exhausting for stylists to keep up all day every day), you might be a little disappointed. Great haircut, kind of expensive, and I would have paid it six to eight times a year--except for this incredibly insulting experience. My experience here seems different from most reviewers. A few factors played into my not-so-amazing experience. For an upscale salon, I do expect better. I brought pictures of the hairstyle I wanted and showed them to the stylist. The hairstyle I walked out with was not the same. I didn't initially complain at the salon (which I probably should have) for a few reasons. One reason I'm upset is that the stylist took thinning shears to my already EXTREMELY fine hair. Because my head was down while she was cutting, I didn't notice until one side was already completely thinned out. I was hopeful that she knew what she was doing, but I was feeling apprehensive. She thinned out so much of my hair -- it now looks damaged and individual pieces of my hair are sticking out everywhere. She didn't ask me at all if using thinning shears was all right with me. If she had asked, I would've said no. I felt like the picture I brought in didn't reflect super thinned out hair and extreme layers; it was a full, pretty even short bob. Something that struck me as quite odd was that the stylist did not offer to show me the back of my hair when she cut it. At every salon I've ever been to, especially for a bob, the stylist hands me a mirror and twirls my chair around to take a look. This is another reason I didn't get as upset as I was at home -- I didn't know what the back looked like. The back is the worst part for me. It doesn't really look like a full, rounded bob to me. There are pieces of hair sticking out awkwardly in the back and once again, it looks pretty thin and flat. My stylist was also extremely silent -- not really friendly. I get it. I'm an introvert and making small talk can be difficult, but I feel like exchanging more than three sentences the entire appointment is needed. Being so quiet seems unprofessional and stand-offish to me. I can say the only thing I do like about the cut is that there is some volume retained at the top of my head, which is nice. But other than that, I can't wait until it grows out so I can get it evened some. I don't think I'll be returning. read more

VANESSA GRAY IS THE BEST!! So I'm very attached to my hair and I don't go in and get haircuts just whenever. I had a very specific look in mind and I was just dreading that moment for when I look in the mirror after its all done and gone and my heart drop. However, a friend of mine recommended Vanessa Gray to give me a haircut and go in for some color (which is something that I'm not knowledgeable about). I reached out to Vanessa through Instagram and said she had a spot open and after sending her a picture of what I wanted she said she could totally do it. My appointment came along and I was super nervous! But when meeting Vanessa, she was super chill and friendly! She made me feel at ease and I really believed that she could give me the hair of my dreams. Throughout the whole process, I asked questions and she was more than happy to answer any of them and explain things to me. She always double-checked things with me like length and explained how different styles might look with my new hair and never once was I lost in the dark. This review is for Mercedes Mancillas. I have been seeing Mercedes for over 2 years now! I am GRATEFUL I found her. For some time now I have been wanting to write this review because I actually found Mercedes via one of her customer's review here on yelp. She was previously at another salon and followed her to Mint! Mercedes really understands my style and my type of hair. She also really made sure that I was doing things at home to take care of my hair better. She gave me many recommendations on what I can do to get the healthiest hair possible; I still really appreciate those tips. It is also important to note that Mercedes is such a ball to be around. She is so hilarious! This may not seem like much to you but when you spend 2+ hours in a salon, having someone funny and nice to talk to goes such a long way! Mercedes works so hard to always give you the best cut or color. I had balayage done a few months back and I was completely in love with it. I have black hair so balayage can look tacky(in my opinion) if it isn't done right. She did such a great job. It looked so natural! But Mercedes, being the perfectionist that she is, told me she would've wanted to see it a little lighter at the bottom. She offered to redo my hair for FREE. I, of course, did not allow her to "fix" my hair because I loved it. This just goes to show that she really gives it her all, 100% of the time I go see her. I wish I could say I had a good experience. I picked this place for my annual hair cut based upon the reviews. Guess none of the reviewers has long straight hair. I got the impression that the hair stylist would have preferred if I were there to get it all cut off. The brush she chose to use after the wash only served to tear my hair out, rather than loosen the tangles caused from not using enough conditioner. I also think 70$ for a trim (2 inches) on long straight hair is a rip too. I think I would have been better off going to a less fancy salon, since it seems complicated hair-do's are their specialty. I don't need coloring, Bumble & Bumble or an aesthetician.. just a haircut. Its not like you can screw up cutting a little bit off of long hair, but amazingly I noticed once I got home that one side was longer than the other, and I had to trim it myself to make it even. read more

I cannot say enough good things about Jen Patton - she is a damn genius. For the past 20 or so years I have had waist-length, box-dyed black hair. Now that I'm in my mid-thirties I wanted to move towards a more stylish 'do and lighten up the black. She has taken me from shitty box dye to a mutli-faceted caramel so gorgeous that strangers stop me on the street and ask about my hair color. I also recently decided to chop my long hair off and go with an a-line lob, which she helped me choose. I was really nervous to cut my hair since the last time I cut anything significant, I looked like a 1980s PTA mom on a bad hair day after missing Donahue in the morning. Not. Good. Now, I have famous people hair. I have beachy waves. I have a sleek lob. I have whatever the hell I want because Jen's haircuts fall perfectly and suit your hair texture (as well as the amount of laziness you wish to achieve). My selfie game has been changed. I've had to buy new clothes for work because my hair is too goddamned amazing for the Old Navy Office crap I was wearing before. I HAVE A BAUBLEBAR SUBSCRIPTION NOW. I literally pass this place everyday, so being new to Austin and still searching for that great salon/day spa place, I wanted to give Mint a try after seeing the great 5 star reviews. I will have to say the two services I received, on two different visits (I wanted to see if I just came on an "off" day, so I waited till I had two visits under my belt before writing a review), were worthy of 4 or 5 stars. I felt the pricing was fair, $60 for a non-junior stylist hair cut and $20 for an eyebrow wax. That being said, I found that my hair stylist and my eyebrow waxing technician were competent but not friendly, warm or welcoming. I could tell that both employees wanted me in and out of their chairs as quickly as possible. I think what gave my hair stylist away was her lurking behind the reception desk when I cashed out so she could collect her tip, car keys in hand, jacket on, ready to get the heck out of Dodge. Again, I do want to emphasize that the services I received were very high quality and I've been enjoying them. I could tell their stylists are extremely competent but their "bed side" manner leaves a lot to be desired. Based on the later, I will still be looking for my go-to salon and day spa. read more

From long layers, to short styles, to bangs, she's done a diversity of cuts for me with great skill and artistry. I have been going to Rachal R. for hair color and cuts for around 15 years and followed her here from Ann Kelso salon and some places in between. Rachal does beautiful highlights and color. I have seen the results from her clients who come in before and after me for around 15 years now and she does beautiful work. My favorite is the classy blonde color she does. She has never missed an appointment and is reliable. The main reason I choose her is the great results though her reliability really sweetens the deal. We always have so much fun together at our appointments which is just a bonus, she has the best sense of humor and sense of fun.. My favorite thing about this salon is they keep the capes in good order and throw out the ones with missing snaps which was not always the case in many prior salons. This is a great salon in general. They keep it neat, clean and organized and staff is warm and helpful and have great advice if you have questions about products. This review is for Vanessa Gray at Mint. I called and managed to get an appointment at the last minute which was fantastic but thats where the good feeling ended. Vanessa said maybe three full sentences to me the whole time I was there and I don't know if something had happened in her personal life, but she seemed completely disinterested in what I wanted done with my hair. I told her that I hadn't had a haircut in almost a year since having a baby and was bored with my hair and really wanted something different, with lots of layers. Vanessa asked me if she could cut off about 3 inches, and I said that was fine and she could cut off more if she wanted. She grunted and fifteen minutes later starts blow drying my hair. Thats it. No questions in between, no talking, no asking if the length was ok, nothing. When she was done my hair looked exactly the same as when I walked in, just shorter. I couldn't see any layers at all. The worst part was how completely disinterested Vanessa was in doing anything about it. I told her I had hoped for a more obvious difference, maybe more prominent layers and she...shrugged? I asked her what she could do and she didn't seem to want to do anything and I felt like I had to force her to add layers. I told her what I would like to see (shorter layer around my face) but it was really awkward because she just stood there and insisted I tell her where to cut. Er... I've literally never paid 60+ dollars for a haircut where I had to tell the person exactly where to apply their scissors. When I paid, I asked the receptionist if Vanessa was ok, if something was wrong because she was super silent and she said she was just quiet. I regret that I tipped at all. I'm super disappointed with the whole experience. Through sheer guesswork in telling her what to correct her with her cut, I feel like the final look wasn't a complete disaster, but like my husband commented, it really isn't one of my top haircuts. read more

Very friendly staff and clean salon. I ran in last night because I read online that they carry Bumble & Bumble products. This place is a stones throw away from my house, which is a super plus. But the reason I gave them an excellent review is because the receptionist was super friendly, even though I was not a client and I think they were closing soon. Melissa at Mint ROCKS!! For the first time since I moved here (5 years ago) I have finally found the hairdresser who actually listened to me and did exactly what I asked her to do! I have wavy hair and like to wear it that way - which evidently isn't how my previous hairdressers wanted me to wear my hair. Should have gone to supercuts! This was my first time at Mint. I wanted to treat myself to an upscale salon but ended up receiving a very disappointing haircut while having to dish out a lot of money. The cut looks nothing at all like what I requested and I got to spend my entire weekend depressed and ashamed of my unflattering look. I have booked another appointment at another salon in hopes that someone can fix this mess. I will have to spend even more and more of my hair will be cut. The one star rating is for the staff there that were really nice. I need to remember that upscale is not always the better option. Ugh! read more

We all know how devastating the wrong haircut can be. Sure it will grow out but unfortunately you're the one that has to walk around with it for the next month. The first cut I received was not good, nor what I asked for and ran me $80. A too short, traditional stacked bob (from the 80s). Something you would expect from Supercuts or a beauty college student. The management of this salon handled my dissatisfaction very well. Long story short, I did go back to original stylist to attempt a fix but somehow it just got worse. Management listened to me and offered a refund or to set me up with another stylist at no charge. Allie to the rescue.
