At the beginning of Covid I went to get my hair colored and as you can see from the left it's not right. since Covid pretty much happened right after that I didn't care. I sat with that brassy color all this time. But every time I looked in the mirror I was like what the f---k I have orange hair. Anyway, since it's the new year I decided I want to start like combing my hair again and wearing non-sweat pants etc. etc. I called up Heather Olexa and she toned my hair the F down. I am no longer orange and for her I'm grateful. You're crazy if you don't go see this girl for your cut and color.She only colored me today but I plan on going back in January for her to chop off my mane. This review is for Amber, who does the Oxy Facials at the salon! She was so amazing- outstanding service. I didn't wait at all- she actually got started early, which was awesome! She offered me a beverage right away- I had white wine. It had been a rough week, so the extra pampering was so nice- she even offered me a stool to prop my feet up! The only drawback of the salon is that they don't offer a bed/private room for the facials- you have to get it at a hair shampoo station. Regardless, Amber and the facial were GREAT. Joel freakin Hamburger. All i really need is one word and that is ( AMAZING ). He is really top notch, knows exactly what he is doing, an artist, genuine. I went in today for a dramatic change with my hair. I chopped off over 19 inches. But before I showed him few pics of what I was wanting and he looked them over well and then evaluated my facial structure, hair texture, and what hair length would compliment my face/neck. SUPER. The hair shampoo smelled divine and that scalp massage...oooweee! The music and overall vibe of the salon has a sort of tropical/modern feel to it. Correct me if Im wrong but thats what I got. There was instrumental reggae playing and the overall layout of the building was spacious and airy. Made it seem a lot bigger than it was. Also smells like heaven in there. Jeromy has been stolen by Peacock Salon down on SLamar. I am told they are moving very shortly to the East Side. Since they are moving I will comment only briefly on the location: cute little salon with maybe four chairs; very peacock-y inside, meaning bright teal walls, with wooden accents. Parking=bonus. Jeromy is a very talented hairdresser. It is my understanding he specializes in color, but I'm cheap and only get my hair cut. He makes my baby fine hair look edgy and sassy instead of limp and dull. I no longer have an opinion, I just sit down, let him take out his razor, and go to town. (As mentioned, they have great products, but at my request, Jeromy cuts my hair in a way that I don't need do do anything but stick my head out the window and let it dry on the way to work.) Jeromy is also a hottie. With a fancy pants surname and gorgeous blue eyes, his talent extends beyond hair to the kitchen, to fatherhood, to rock climbing, to welding, and yes, to pickles. We all know how hard it is to find a good hairdresser, especially for highlights, and especially if you're on a time crunch. Lauren got me in right away and was flexible when I asked if I could come in an hour early. She served me some delicious wine and had such a positive energy, it made getting my hair done a really fun experience! My highlights look amazing and my hair is feeling super healthy. I am so finicky about my hair. Since it's straighter than a board - in mass quantities - it's easy to pinpoint any out of place cut. Admittedly, I rifle through hairdressers like bad boyfriends - and I'm more than a little nervous when I have anyone touch this hair. I've been to Lori in the past - LOVED her cut (albeit not her old location) - so was thrilled to learn she found a new home at Peacock's Tale. I wasn't quite sure what to expect from the outside - but fell in love as soon as I walked in the door. The salon's decor is fabulous - with an overall relaxed vibe. It's small and intimate - so one doesn't feel like just a number on a long rotating door of customers. And it's clear Lori listens to what you want - while taking liberty to cut according to your hair's features. What can I say? Overall - I am thrilled with my cut and my hairstylist's new home. Just returning from a deployment to Iraq I was in need of a haircut. I wanted to get a really good haircut and I stumbled upon Peacock. They squeezed me in without an appointment and unbeknownst to me I was conversing with the owner about my deployment as I was waiting. During the haircut I asked my stylist how much the haircut cost (bad technique btw). My stylist, Joel Hamburger (best name in the biz) said the owner was paying for my haircut. I can only imagine it was a gesture of gratitude towards a veteran as her way of saying thanks. For the first time in my adult life I had a hair stylist explain the shape of my head and what he needed to do to make my haircut look symmetrical. Joel did an amazing job, best haircut EVER! I've gone back since and will continue to frequent Joel and Peacock. They earn 5 stars based on the haircut and hospitality, not the gesture towards a veteran, although that didn't hurt. I've been going to Bird's for the last 7 years, and found it difficult to maintain a consistently good haircut. Stylists were constantly moving from store to store or quitting, or working on days when I couldn't make it in. I never felt very confident going in that my hair was going to turn out the way I wanted. Well, with my wedding coming up in a few months, I was motivated to go out and actually find a good stylist/barber that I could keep coming back to month after month, and never have to worry about leaving dissatisfied. It would appear I got it right on the first try. Enter Todd Fisher. I was really nervous going in because I had never gotten a real classic, Mad Men style men's haircut before, and I knew that's what Todd's specialty was. He immediately made me feel at ease (after complimenting me on both my shirt and shoes, which is always nice, even for us dudes). I pretty much told him that my hair was in his hands, and we briefly talked about what I DIDN'T want. When he told me that I had the perfect hair for what he had in mind, I really trusted that he knew what he was doing, and I relaxed as he went to work. I don't think I've ever had someone cut my hair so meticulously and carefully. He took his time and made sure that every strand of hair was just so. He even took a couple seconds to trim my eyebrows. No one has EVER offered or bothered to trim my eyebrows. It's the little things, you know? And that's what a haircut experience with Todd is all about. You feel like he really cares about every little detail. I must say, i walked away with the best haircut I've ever gotten. Period. So, Todd is my new barber, and I don't think I'll ever darken Bird's door(s) again. read more

Joel is amazing! I just recently had got my haircut from him and it was definitely one of my best hair experiences. Joel is incredible knowledgeable and takes the time to explain what he is doing and why. I have curly hair and am often really nervous about going to someone new. He did such a great job with my curls and he definitely showed that he was comfortable working with curls even when the cut I was wanting was unknowingly an advanced cut. He really just took his time to make sure all the curls fit together, that everything was even and that I was comfortable with it all. Also, during our appointment he was also mentoring/sharing wisdom with a cosmetology which highlighted even more his knowledge. the time before summer 2009 was a dark time, but that all ended once i met Joel Hamburger ... i read a review saying he was great working with texture, any texture, and after about 7 crappy haircuts in a year from 7 different "experienced" stylists, i desperately booked an appt w/ him. the day i came in, i knew i was destined for hair greatness. he's hip with the kids these days, but knows better to not be too hip. he looked at my Long Duck Dong hair (love 16 Candles), and said, "watch out, boys there's a new sheriff in town." --- jk. anyway, i have the most coarse, unruly hair, and i feel like other stylists look at my hair as a problem and want to hack the shit out of it VS Joel's view of "oh, it's just another type of hair, let's see how awesome i can make it look." --- you see, positive, friendly vibes. it's funny, he has this way of asking u a couple questions, and then just when u didn't think u knew what u wanted, u've had a a complete conversation with yourself, which he's listened to very carefully, and he knows exactly what to do. anyway, i can usually tell in the first 15 min if someone knows what they are doing, and he seemed like he did in the first 5. he's got a gift, yall. he's got the experience and expertise to know that cutting off as little as a centimeter of hair is going to make all the difference in making your it grow out perfectly. his hands are made of magic and rainbows and puppies and unicorns and gold and all things that are good. i can't tell you how may times i've gotten out of his chair and been like "i didn't know my hair could do that!" i just counted about 12, yeah, 12 people, i've referred to him. ladies, i know you're looking at my photo and are probably thinking "but does he do women's hair?" - OF COURSE HE DOES! as a matter of fact, not only does he do women's hair (probably mostly), but the first time my roomie went to him, she came home and was like "woah, i look like a total babe! best haircut of my life!" -- also, true story, my roomie and i were out on South Congress for 1st Thursdays and this woman was like,"sorry, i know this might be weird but i've been walking behind you this entire time, and I'm just curious to know, where do you get your hair done?" here's a link to his site where u can book online: http://www.hairbyjoel.com/ do it. read more

I moved to Austin 3 years ago and had hair dresser for 8 years where I used to live. When I moved here I found Lori D. by word of mouth. I have been with her for 2 years and love her! Joel Hamburger is a hair cutting genius. I have extremely curly and frizzy hair, so I've spent a fortune (and lots of time) getting it straightened for the last 16 years. Recently, I've begun seriously trying to simplify my life, which includes letting my hair do what it does naturally. I knew Joel in high school when we lived in the Boston area and had no idea he lived in Austin until I ran into him at a party about a year ago, where we caught up and he told me he was a hair stylist. I hadn't seen him since that party, but for some reason when I was thinking about this haircut, he popped into my head, so I did some Internet research. I liked the photos that were on his website, and there were enough glowing reviews from people with curly/unruly hair for me to decide that he was the man for the job. When I showed up at the salon my hair was shoulder length and had about 4 months of growth since my last straightening. The difference between the straightened hair and the new growth was pretty dramatic and looked weird. I told Joel that I wanted a cut where you couldn't tell that my hair had been straightened, even if it ended up being really short. He thought he could keep some of the length and have it look natural. I agreed, knowing that I could always cut more off later. After looking at my head very carefully for a few minutes, he came up with a plan, and explained it carefully to me. At no point during the cut did I have a moment of panic with what I saw in the mirror; just the opposite, as he was cutting I thought, "This looks so much better than I expected!" By the time he was done I already loved it. I immediately started getting compliments, even from my uber-hipster friends. I was a little nervous that the haircut would look different after I washed my hair, but I've washed it a handful of times since then and it still looks great. I started going to see Leah Squyres for my haircuts a few years ago, and I was sorry to lose her when I moved to Houston in February of 2011. I did all my research and got recommendations from friends, but the next couple of haircuts I got were horribly disappointing, and I am known for having some pretty great hair, so that's a big deal to me. To be fair my 5 star review is more for Amanda Eggiman than Peacock Salon. I've only been to the salon once, for a quick dry cut with the stupid talented and amazinggggggg Amanda E., so I wasn't able to really tell much from that one visit. Amanda recently moved to Peacock from another salon and I came with! I actually take time off work and drive from San Antonio all the way to Austin just so she can work her magic on my hair. Once you find that one person who takes pride in her work, knows what the f* she's doing, is the ultimate professional and super sweet, there's no going back! I have trust issues when it comes to my hair but when I sit down on her chair, totally relaxed, looking forward to an awesome conversation, and she asks "what are we working on today", the words "whatever you want and think needs to be done" just roll of my tongue. And that is priceless! Even more priceless than that? Ever since she started cutting my hair, over two years ago, I've never had to brush it! I sh*t you not my friends! the closest I come to that is running my fingers through my conditioned hair in the shower to get rid of any crazy knots. Once I step out of the shower, I put some motion lotion from Kevin Murphy (super natural, paraben free products that Amanda introduced me to, of course), run it through my hair and that's it! It somehow airs dry all fabulous. People compliment me a LOT on my hair and I always credit Amanda and her genius cuts. Oh, and have I mentioned her color techniques are badassssssss?!?!?!?! She does my highlights in such a way that when they start growing out they look even prettier! So you're not needing a retouch every few weeks. If you are tired of being a slave to your hair, if you want to embrace your natural beauty, if you drool with envy every time you see that chick with beachy, effortless waves or if you just need a good freaking haircut, book an appointment with Amanda. Their location on East Cesar Chavez is convenient (parking lot is almost always available), and super cute. Lori always offers me wine, or sparkling water and the atmosphere is very comfortable. Joel Hamburger is a terrific stylish. He's great with my very curly hair and my SO's wavy Asian hair. He actually looked at me and figured out how my hair would look the best rather than just cutting it the way he wanted to. Peacock Salon is a nice shop where my 4 year old isn't treated like a leper.
