I've had "curtain bangs" done at several salons and always left disappointed because they were never done right.. until now. Veronica went above and beyond. I was looking for a new salon and stylist here in Austin after my previous stylist and I had a break up (a series of unfortunate colors). I looked on Yelp for highly reviewed coloring specialists and Black Orchid came up. I set up an initial consult in late February and was matched with Kate. Right away she was very understanding and listened to my concerns (I hated the warmth of my brunette and really wanted a cool, easy maintenance brunette color). After our initial consult I made an appointment (you've got to plan ahead - the earliest I could get in after that consult was early April). When I went back in, Kate and I talked again about my goals (cool, ashy brunette, easy maintenance). And she got to work! I also like to keep my hair at French Bob length with curtain bangs and honestly, she nailed it. She checked in with me frequently throughout the cut to make sure she was getting the texture and length right. And the color - so happy! I knew my hair could be a cool, ashy brunette and Kate got me there in one session! I know it will continue to get better over time as well. The space itself is really well decorated - front desk is incredibly friendly. Great drinks selection (they have alcohol for over 21s). Parking is available in an attached garage so also need to worry about meter parking or fighting for spots. Pricing is fair and competitive for good salons/stylists in Austin - and honestly, Kate could charge more she's a magician. Honestly, Kate is so great! I highly recommend but get in early she books up quickly and rightfully so! read more

I got a cut with Maggie yesterday and was so happy with my experience. The people up front were very sweet and they have drinks available if you have to wait a few minutes before going to your chair. I brought some pictures of things I DID like, in addition to elements of cuts I DIDN'T like. She took it all in and made some recommendations, which I appreciated as someone who doesn't experiment with style often. The wash was pleasant and she wasn't too rough with my hair or scalp. Comfy chairs, good lighting, music wasn't too loud. My cut turned out fantastic, and she used some products with the blow dry that made the style last a few days. Very chatty and friendly, paying for her service and time was totally worth it. I've left salons before feeling ripped off for the cost vs result, and this was the exact opposite. I was really looking forward to my first appointment at this salon, but unfortunately, I missed it due to unforeseen circumstances and admittedly didn't call ahead. While I understand the importance of respecting a stylist's time, I was surprised to find that I had been blacklisted after just one no-call no-show--as a brand-new client. The cancellation policy does not state that a first-time no-show will result in being refused service entirely, which feels unnecessarily harsh and unwelcoming for someone new. A courtesy follow-up or warning would have been appreciated, especially since this was my first interaction with the business. I went here on Sunday and really enjoyed my experience. First I wanted to say that I really appreciated the front desk. They were knowledgeable and very welcoming. I spoke with him on the phone to schedule my appointment and he seemed to understand what I was looking for. My hair is very long and thick, so I wanted a stylist that was experienced so I am happy he was able to find me a good one! Juan was my stylist. He has been a stylist for many years and clearly knew what he was doing. He also had very calm and inviting energy which was nice. I had about 6 inches cut off so my haircut was pretty drastic. He did a great job and I was really happy! He also helped me with a few decisions because I honestly went in not knowing exactly what I wanted for my haircut. I would definitely recommend Juan again. I also know that I have used Veronica for color and Philip before as well and I was happy with my experiences with them too. One thing I especially like about this salon is that I never feel like a burden that needs to be rushed out. There are so many salons that overbook their stylists to the point where they are frazzled and can not provide quality services. This salon cares about their stylists. It really sucks when you are with a stylist that is on a time crunch and has to rush their client through the haircut. I have never felt this way at this salon. I always felt like the stylists were taking good care of me, and I like that. I would recommend this place to others and I will come here again for sure! read more

I've been coming here for over a year now and I have to say this is officially my spot. I book online and have an account I can easily rebook through. The salon itself is clean, bright, and usually bustling. There's been very few times I've come in and it's not had over half the chairs full. That's a testament to their quality. I was offered a drink before we get started; I usually go for the sparkling water. Everyone is friendly and you can tell the stylists all vibe nicely with each other. I see Vanessa, and she consistently gives me a cut/color that makes me feel hot and confident. I have curly hair and every curlfriend knows some stylists don't know what they're doing with your texture. Vanessa nails it again and again. I tend to bring in a variety of pictures as I never really know exactly how I want my hair to look and she works with my inspo and gets me where my hair will go. All of their stylists sounded amazing, but Veronica seemed to fit what I was looking for. She did not disappoint. She looked at the pictures I brought, discussed with me what I wanted, the texture of my hair, etc. She mixed the red I wanted in a way that it meshes well with my natural brown hair (ideal when new growth starts to show), and she gave me a great classic bob. Communicate with your stylist, show up when you're supposed to or cancel/reschedule with proper notice, and you're going to have a good time. ------------------------- I started going to BOS a few years ago after my stylist Maggie moved over there from another salon. When I tell you I've never had such a positive experience with a salon as a whole: everyone I've interacted with--from the people at the front desk, to stylists outside my own (mine's amazing too)--has been exceptional. Everyone truly feels like a friend, and I'm always so excited to go in for my appointments. I can't say enough good things about Maggie herself. She kills it every time and I'll never see anyone else as long as I can help it. On the few occasions that I've had to see someone besides Maggie, the stylist was incredibly patient and understanding when I explained my nerves around someone new cutting my hair, and she was so careful about making sure I was happy with my hair before letting me leave. I think having a positive experience with a salon or stylist is really simple. If you're seeing someone new or trying something new, you have to be willing to communicate what you want throughout the process--especially if you're someone (like me) who feels strongly about how your hair is cut/styled. Lastly, I think it's important to remember that stylists are typically paid based on their appointments. So cancelling or rescheduling at the last minute cuts into the money they take home. Of course things come up, but not giving a stylist ample opportunity to fill a recently-vacated time slot and getting angry about a late fee just shows a lack of regard towards another person's well-being... we all need to eat. read more

I'm not one who really cares for trips to the salon. I've grown up going to my mom's friend, then changing to my own stylist-friend as I entered young adulthood. However, moving to Austin changed all of that. Thank goodness for yelp! I read so many reviews on all of the hair salons near me, and Black Orchid seemed the most affordable and had the most widely-accepted stylists. Fernando had great reviews on Yelp and I felt like he would be a great stylist to trust with my chop. I'm also on a student budget, so the fact that they had introductory rates (+shampoo AND blow dry) for haircuts really got me interested. Turns out, my instincts were right! I went from my tangled-ends, thick and long hair to a refreshed, thinned out (by request), and easy to manage past-the-shoulders cut. He listened to my requests, took the time to make sure I was OK with what he was going to do, and even gave me a blow out! It was definitely the first time in my 20-something year old life I've felt like a princess. So thanks for that, Fernando. The conversation was a breeze too--good luck with your carpal tunnel! There are so many reasons to give 5 stars, but mainly because the entire process was so easy and not intimidating. I hadn't been to a hair salon in years, and the online sign-up system was a piece of cake. As a first timer at Black Orchid, I booked a consult and a haircut--so newbies, make sure you do that so you get extra cushion time. I also was running 10 minutes late, so I frantically gave the front desk a call, and a sweet sweet man was so patient and understanding with me on the phone. He told me it was no problem, and he would notify Fernando. Parking was quite easy in the afternoon, but you can also park inside the parking structure. They have a cute mini shop area for your buying needs, offer chilled water when you enter, and even have other services like waxing. I can definitely see this place becoming my salon to go to. I felt so welcome (especially as a student! No snooty judgment, I love it!) and spoiled here. Will definitely be back to see Fernando for my next refresher! read more

I love my hair color!! Emma did highlights and a cut and it exceeded my expectations. I moved from San Francisco and it is super hard to find someone in a new city when you have gone to the same person who did a great job in the past. I did try 2 other salons since I moved to Austin and I was not been enamored. They were ok but nothing great. HOWEVER, Emma is my jackpot! It was super fun to let her do her magic. I watched her concentrate, step back, look, refine, in such detail that I knew it was a true artist who was meticulously doing my hair. I think some salons have designated colorists and designated hair cutters but I found that getting one person who is good at both and creating one masterpiece is better than two separate artists working on the same piece of art. You have to find that one person though who is excellent at both. Emma wins on all accounts. read more

I had my first visit at Black Orchid Salon two weeks ago -- and it was amazing! 1. The office management is pretty awesome - they texted me about an hour before my appointment start time to let me know the appt preceding mine was running about 20 mins behind. They gave me the option to adjust my arrival time so I wouldn't have to wait in the lobby if I didn't want to - I loved this! 2. My stylist Ashton was incredible - she was super personable, helped me navigate my wish list for my hair type, and I was really happy with the final result. Taking the time to talk it out/look at pictures and check-in throughout made it a great experience. Highly recommend! 3. Salon was clean, parking was easy (considering the location I was shocked!), and they have a selection of bevvies should you want one (always a nice feature when you're looking at spending 2-3 hours there). I have been reluctant to venture out since businesses started reopening because I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was time to do something about my Covid Hair. I loved Black Orchid before and now I love them even more. Before I went to my appointment, I received full instructions on what to expect and was able to sign my waiver online. I arrived and texted the salon. (I was invited to come in immediately, but they have two shaded bistro chairs on the patio that are distanced if you have to wait for a couple minutes.) Upon entry into a well-organized welcoming area, I sanitized my hands, got a quick temperature check, and put on a fresh mask. I was also given a sanitized bin for my purse. (Purse bottoms are gross in the best of times. Big props for this addition.) All staff and customers are required to wear masks. I was escorted to my stylist's station. (Every other chair has been removed, so distancing is no problem.) It was so great to see Veronica! She did a beautiful job on my highlights and my haircut. We were able to chat and catch up, except in the shampoo area. (There is no chatting in the shampoo room.) It was so nice to have someone else style my hair and make me feel pampered and normal. I went over the weekend and got a haircut from Kate. My hair was disgusting and crunchy because it had been almost a year since I've gotten a cut due to covid. I've been terrified to go to get my haircut because of covid, especially because I've been super socially distant and recently stopped seeing out small pod. I felt safe immediately when I walked in. You get your own clean bin to keep your stuff off the counters, you have to sanitize and get temp checked. You are separated from all the staff besides the stylist working with you by plexiglass. They give you a mask for you to use in shop which was sanitized by them and a fresh robe, and when they're not handing it to you, it's in a closed bin. No talking in the washing station and contact free transactions. While I felt incredibly comfortable, I also got a great cut! I asked for a straight, blunt cut and I've noticed most stylists will cut a straight line and then thin out the ends so they can hide imperfections, but Kate was SO precise. She paid such close attention to my hair. She also made me feel so comfortable in the chair. I've never been so happy with the haircut! read more

I found my IT place. The hour drive is totally worth the results. It is so hard to find someone who can truly cut a pixie correctly, however Juan is a true master of his craft. The salon has a hip and trendy vibe. It is situated in a little complex. I parked on the side of the street and had easy access to the entrance. I was greeted and checked in and was offered a variety of beverages. The salon has a ittle boutique that sells clothing , jewelry and other items. Anyway i got in the chair and Juan kept up a steady stream of fun chatter while he worked on my mop of a head. The color and cut was perfect. I will gladly make my hour drive. They are amazing here! Juan is wonderful. He has cut my hair one time and did a phenomenal job. I basically told him to just do whatever with it and I loved what he did! I also came yesterday to get my hair dyed by him with a partial balayage. We went with a very bright orange. He did a great job. However, when I got home, I had a change of heart and realized that the color we chose was a bit too bright for my professional job. I called the salon back and they told me I could come back later that evening for a free adjustment. Juan was so lovely and so understanding and accommodated me right away. He applied toner twice more just to make the color a bit more subtle and I really, really love the result. I would recommend coming to Juan for cut or color for any style! He's great.
