Had my first post-pandemic cut with Lynnie and I couldn't be happier!!! I've been cutting my own hair for 14 mos, and while Lynnie was super kind and generous in telling me that I did a good job and that anyone would struggle to cut the back of their head where they can't see, I felt like my hair was a real mess. I mean, just chaos all over. So now that I'm vaxxed and about to take a trip back east to visit family I haven't seen in what feels like eons, I knew I needed professional help. And since I'm relatively new to Austin, I turned to Yelp for help in choosing that professional help :-) I absolutely love the cut and style Lynnie gave me, and, as I said, I felt like her task was extra challenging because of all the chaos I wreaked on my own quarantined head, ha. So I'm extra impressed with the end product! This cut is super cute and stylish and attractive and it feels very "me." I love it! Also, I love that Lynnie asked about how I style my hair at home, and maybe bc I'm lazy or maybe I'm impatient, I usually just let it air dry. So she gave me tips for styling it that way and then put me under the dome dryer to mimic the air dry so we could see how it looked after. I really appreciated that extra touch too-- it was so helpful to me since I feel like I learned some new tricks that I will actually carry out bc they're easy and don't require me to do anything time-consuming. Also, I felt very comfortable with Lynnie. In addition to clearly being so talented at her craft, she's a warm, friendly, all-around nice person who I enjoyed chatting with while she was making over my head :-). I was so looking forward to my first professional self-care experience post-vaccine (my husband is in a vulnerable group so I've been psychotically cautious for the last year so I wouldn't unknowingly give the virus to him). I was so looking forward to it that I could barley sleep last night! But at the same time I was nervous bc I am so easily embarrassed (I'm working on that), and I really was embarrassed about my hair. Lynnie put me at ease immediately, and her kindness and patience and warmth made the whole experience fabulous for me, so it was good for my outsides and my insides. I feel so good with this new haircut (I feel 10 years younger, maybe even 20!), and I feel so grateful for finding out about Lynnie. In case it's not already obvious, I will be returning again and again to be the lucky recipient of her talent, and in case it's not obvious, I highly recommend her as well... the highest recommendation I can give! Only one person touched my hair for the 8 years I lived in SF so I was nervous about letting someone new near my locks. What luck that I moved into the same neighborhood as Modesty! Song has been cutting and coloring my hair for over 2 years. Ever since I started seeing Song, my hair has looked the best and healthiest it has ever looked! Song truly understands how to cut and color my fine hair. She's super gifted, she listens to what kind of cut and color I want, she covers up my greys like a champ and makes my hair look naturally good. People are always surprised when I tell them that I dye my hair to cover up greys because Song uses a color that matches my skin tone and natural color. I have never had a bad haircut here. And my hair is tough to cut. Let's just say that finding a hair stylist for the 'fro, is like finding a canary in the coal mine, a diamond in the rough, a baseball player that doesn't take steroids......well you get the point. We found Tracey Denison on accident, and my was it a great accident. My ma was in town for ACL last year (go ma!) and needed a cut to the curly locks upon her head. I had good experiences here before, so I suggested my mom get her hair cut here. She is a nervous patron because people usually screw up her hair. Tracey spent the time, and took small steps to ensure her hair cut was just right. My mom loved it, and it grew out perfectly. She was even telling me on the phone how she wished Tracey was where she lived since it was so hard to find someone. Well, since she did so well on my mom's hair, I decided to go to her as well, since you know....I inherited the curls from ma. Let me just say, cutting curly hair is tough for anyone, and those who specialize in curly hair are hard to find. Also, having been the recipient of many a bad hair cut before.....going to a new person is almost like walking into a place expecting the worst, and hoping for the best, fully expecting to be traumatized. (Yes....I've had BAD haircuts). So Tracey is Ah-mazing. She spends the time with me to really understand what my goals are, how my hair curls, talks about proper curly hair maintenance, takes it step by step and shapes the hair really well. Also - best thing, or at least this has been my experience, most stylists seem to be REALLY comfortable with straight hair, and seriously just don't understand how curly hair shrinks up. Tracey can cut my hair and shape, and take off just the tiniest amount, which allows my hair to curl properly, shape well, and not look frizzy, and still not make it look like it has shrunk 2". Not only that, but she is easy and fun to talk to. From the other reviews it sounds like she is just as good at straight hair, as curly, but let me say - I'll give a strong enforcement for her curly hair skills. Go see her. She is awesome. read more

Now, the actual salon itself is pretty bare bones, in a built-out section of one of the new lofts / condos on East 11th. It's next door to purple bean, so you can get coffee. But you're not going here for fancypants treatment. You're going to modesty because Stacey is aces with bangs, curly hair, and dude cuts. Seriously, I have crazy curly triangle poof of doom without her. Stupid business name, but don't be hatin' - get yourself some modesty. Really. read more

Tracy Denison. She is the best hair stylist I've ever had [and I've had mostly bad ones, so I know what a good one looks like]. Beyond being awesome at cutting hair [my fiance and I both have short hair and she does a fantastic job with our hair], she is so nice and easy to talk to. You know when you feel like you have to entertain your hair stylist by being funny and talking a lot? Well, you will never feel that way with Tracy. I called Modesty back in November for a haircut and I was luckily assigned to Tracy and would not consider going to anyone else. My fiance and I have very different types of hair and desires for our haircuts [I have wavy hair and want it to be a bit messy while my fiance has pin-straight thin hair and goes for a more conservative look] and she is able to give us both the haircuts we want. If she is able to take both of our desires and make it work, then she can definitely do the same for you. I have never left Tracy's chair anything but happy. I'm working on growing my hair out from being super short and each time I see Tracy she keeps that in mind while still keeping my hair in presentable shape (i.e. not letting me walk around with a mullet). She also offers free "bang" trims between haircuts so you can go and get your hair cleaned up in between cuts (especially helpful for short hair, which starts to look like messy quickly). Need your hair colored? Lindsay's the best in town. I ran into her the other day and recalled how awesome my hair was back when she was doing my cuts and color. Like Jennifer N., I also have heavy Asian hair that takes a superhero to stack up and maintain. Lindsay is an "artiste," lemme tell ya. She's not afraid to tell you like it is, including that the punky color of your dreams is not what matches your skin tone best, and she's just easy to be with and talk to. Back when I was working the corporate gig, Lindsay suggested hiding my shocking hues underneath my bangs, so that if I parted my bangs one way for my 9-5, I'd look totally tame, and swisssh!...if I swept my bangs over to the other side at 5:01 PM, you'd know I was ready to head downtown. Thank you, Lindsay, for being such a genius. Over more than year or so, I first got my fix o' purple, pink, and then electric blue, the last of which I had really originally wanted, and sho' 'nuff, was the least complementary to my Asian skin tone. My white gf also got her color done by L and loved it. Time have changed now, and I'm an old housefrau pinching pennies, but if I could do it again, I'd head straight to L for some pizzazz. I should have posted this YEARS ago! I've seen Sara O for six years now and it took me six years before that to find her! Up until I found Sara I visited TWELVE other salons in Austin (with repeat visits to some), but never left the salon feeling truly, 100% happy with my hair. Sara does the absolute best job with color--seriously, she's done just about everything to my hair (blonde, brunette, a little red, even purple and pink) and every time I leave her chair feeling beautiful and confident! I also appreciate that she actually listens to you and will give you what you want--I've found a lot of stylists will chop more hair off than you want, for example, or won't take you to that shade of blonde that you want without it turning brassy. Finally, her blow outs and styling are top notch. She can do a beachy/mermaid look in a snap and do it flawlessly. I've been going to Song to get my hair did for almost four years now, and I was so excited for her when I found out that she was partnering with Naomi to open Modesty. The place has so much natural light it's unbelievable! Cute sign out front, nice colors inside, and the sweetest looking chairs ever. Yep, these ladies have style, and if you're sitting in one of their chairs, you'll catch some of it too. Get prettier while you sip on some red wine. Prices are very reasonable for a cut and color. . .as in well under the $200 you may pay somewhere else. But, don't forget to tip. People, if you can afford to get your hair did, you can afford to tip. Another thing about these gals: we all know that a big part of a salon is the conversation. If you're sitting there for two hours, you want to be able to get some good yakkin' done. Never any awkward moments, and always good conversation with these ladies--plus they never fail to give me solid recommendations for other places like boutiques, bars, etc. to check out. Of course, if you want to go into your quiet magazine-readin' or crackberry zone, they are happy to leave you alone too. The service itself: ever since I've been seeing Song, people have always asked me where I get my hair done, and I have referred several friends and coworkers. Song does a great job making my hair color look great, but natural, and the cut is always perfect as well. She can do normal hair for you, or something a little more experimental and edgy, or even copy straight from a magazine photo. Believe me, I like to change it up, and Song always helps me come up with a fresh look. Oh, and a little confession: I have plenty of grays, but Song keeps them covered. I haven't cheated on Naomi since I started seeing her years ago. I don't even have to tell Naomi what to do, if I give her free reign I always end up with "sexy hair". At least that is what I have 'nicknamed' it. And, I have never seen Song let anyone leave her chair without perfect hair either. Stacey Pridham is amazing. I followed her from Method to here. She does a great job especially on bangs, asymmetrical cuts, straight hair, fine hair. She really understands how hair works and makes my hair look better than it ever has before. I am usually not someone who drops a lot of money on a haircut, but for the past two years I have, and happily. I've been looking all over Austin the last four years for any one who had the expertise to cut my Asian hair. I've found her in the form of Song. I get the impression she gauges your personality and caters her services to it. For me, that means she's not engaging in too much small talk. She tells me what she'll do based on my thoughts and start snipping away. She will occasionally pipe up to tell you what she's doing to different parts of your hair and then go right back to it. I asked for her to thin out my hair without taking off length and boy, did she do a great job. She took about half the weight off but my hair still had body. Months later, it still looks great. LOVE IT. This was a fabulous experience. People say "It's only hair, it will grow" - well those people haven't had the awkward cringe of dealing with a bad 'do - and worse, paying for it! To anyone who has, I highly recommend Naomi at Modesty Hair Salon. Upon referral from an acquaintance, I tried out Modesty Hair Salon today. I've lived in Austin for six years, and have been threw a slew of stylists. I haven't found anyone so far who is consistent and worth their asking price. The result of folks who have managed my mane before has been either horror and tears or omg I look like Martha Stewart (MS has a fine 'do, but in my early 30's that isn't my look!). Bottom line I just haven't had great luck with my hair in Austin. Clearly I was in the wrong salons. My appt today was with Naomi, one of the owners. She was completely approachable and the atmosphere was very open and relaxed - no pretension here. I loved the natural light - excellent lighting is key! The retro touches were nicely balanced with the modern architecture, and the Ella Fitzgerald-esque music was a nice distant soundtrack. We chatted about my vision and she offered her thoughts - I instantly felt we were on the same page. She talked me through everything - why she washed/cut/colored/dried/cut some more - and through the entire process I was relaxed and confident. Although Naomi explained where we were going with my hair, I was surprisingly impressed with the result. The color was spot on; the cut is perfect. I look like ME - a better truer version of me. Considering we had met only an hr before, I couldn't believe how well she styled my hair and captured my personality in a cut that works with my hair. I loved that Naomi used only two products on my hair - a heat defense spray and a smidge of light paste for definition. I didn't feel any pressure to buy product, but couldn't help myself when it came to the Kevin Murphy Heated Defense - the mild fragrance is natural and gorgeous - and I happily purchased the spray. Lynnie used to do my hair back when we both lived in NY. I was a platinum blonde then and she was one of the only two people who could ever get me that perfect shade of white/blonde. I've been back in Austin for over 4yrs now and while my platinum days are over I still hadn't found anyone in town that could give me hair I absolutely loved. After trying others due to circumstance (work location being across town), I've concluded that wherever Lorie works, I'll drive there for her to color my hair. She has delivered optimal results by choosing colors that work with my skin tone and that don't discolor between visits. She also does a top-notch job of applying the color to the very base of the hair and by coloring many tiny sections of hair to integrate the colors into my natural hair color to achieve a natural look. I'd been going to the same gal in Austin for six years. But after she moved to a different part of Austin and kept moving up the ranks in the studio, the price and drive couldn't be justified. Then a girlfriend recommended Modesty. Then my husband went to Modesty - and back a second time as well. That's when I considered booking an appointment and went to Song. I hadn't had a haircut in six months, so I had a lot of end damage. Song was great at working with me on how much she felt needed to be cut off while still catering to my desire to keep it as long as possible. Also - while she didn't believe at first that my hair could be as frizzy as I claimed it was - when she saw first-hand upon drying my hair, she worked lonnnng and hard to tame it. I really appreciated the labor she put into styling it - and all the information she endowed me with along the way. One of the biggest highlights of my visit here was that although they seem to carry specific lines of product, they did NOT push anything on me. Every place I've gone, it's, "So would you like to buy some if this stuff we used on you today? You so should!" And I always feel pressured and uncomfortable. I somehow managed to book a last minute cut and color with Lindsey on Saturday morning. It's hard finding a good stylist for me because I have a lot of really heavy Asian hair that generally has no body. But lo and behold, my hair has now been cut to mask the terrible bangs I got the last time I had my hair done, and lightened to an appropriate summer shade. The best part? I don't look like a hoochie! The thing about not being white is that generally, when you color your hair something other than what it is naturally, you end up looking like a crazy (think Asians with platinum blonde hair, you know the ones). It's not flattering. Lindsey did an amazing job lightening my hair without crossing into unnatural and I'm really happy with how it came out. She even offered to lighten it up more if I decided in a few days that I wanted to go lighter, but she did it perfectly the first time. She's also really nice and makes good conversation, which is a relief when you're spending a good hour with someone you've never met. Especially since I'm generally awkward the first couple of meetings. Post cut/color she suggested coming in a month for a complimentary bang trim just to see how my hair was doing overall. These girls are where its at. There new space is absolutely fabulous. They are very good at what they do. I've had my hair did by both of them. Usually though Song is my girl. She meticulous in her color application--I have very fine hair, so for highlights only a few strands get colored at a time, but she takes the time to do it right. I'm writing in regards to my appointment yesterday, 6/13/17 at 10 AM and more so the customer service (or lack thereof) I experienced. I walked in about 15 minutes early, ready to get my hair cut and colored. I had made the appointment with Song, as I had her cut and color my hair when I lived in Austin while in college. I sat down and waited. And waited. Two stylists walked by me and didn't even acknowledge that I had just sat down. Another stylist, tall, glasses - asked if my name was Kelsey. I said, "Yes." She had me sit in her chair. Didn't explain why I wasn't working with Song. I will say - I do understand that stylists get overbooked, but not explaining to me why I wasn't working with the person I was scheduled took me by surprise. Asked me what I wanted in a very passive tone, showed her a photo, and then, washed my hair before applying color. I've never had that done before - usually, I come in with dirty hair as I've been told by numerous stylists that it allows the color to stick. She messily applied the color to me head, splashing my arms and phone case (which, rookie mistake, I later moved it as I noticed how she was applying it). She did bring me a water as I waited after asking, but just walked off to go chat with other stylists there. She said she'd be back in 20 minutes. About 30 minutes later, she came back and said that I was ready to wash. Most stylists check hair in between the time they set for their clients to make sure the processing is okay. She then washed it. After that, I explained to her I just wanted it trimmed and that I had an asymmetrical bob I wanted to even out. She said that since I part so far to one side, hair typically is longer on one side. Fair point - but my last stylist DID purposely cut it shorter on one side than the other as I requested...so my goal was to get evened out, as I want to grow out my long hair. Though the color and cut turned out nicely, I was just floored with how rude and holier than thou this stylist came off - she didn't even tell me her name when she greeted me, otherwise, I would warn against working with her. Simply put, Song is the best. It's been nearly 3 years now that I've been going to Song and have never had a poor experience. The one time I did ask to go a little shorter she set up an additional appointment for me and acted like it was no big deal! She is fun and witty and I look forward to our conversations every time I see her. This salon is super clean and has great decor! I would never think of going anywhere else now!! read more

Lindsey Grant is the only person that can give me a great haircut every single time! She is super professional, great to talk to and extremely talented. I have short hair and she always finds a way to add something unique to the cut. I always get compliments on my hair after seeing her. My girlfriend also is a loyal customer and has longer hair. We always talk about how WONDERFUL Lindsey is with color as well. I think she has had some really good training, because she always has the newest best products and information on hand.
