Today I was in search of Aveda air control hair spray, not the traditional hair services. Obviously I was expecting cost between $15-20. The current cost was $40...yikes! I pushed pause on that purchase. I can't believe any hair spray should cost that much. Perhaps this is a high quality hair spray. The Ruiz representative was super nice and engaging. I was also concerned about alcohol content as it's drying to the hair. The Ruiz salon entry way is filled with shelves of products and jewelry. The salon has a sophisticated vibe. read more

I have been coming here for almost 15 years for color and cut. Over time, it has been made very clear by front of house staff that because I have "thick" hair, I have to pay extra for a simple blow out, upwards of $105 on top of a color work. It has become increasingly clear that this place is only for white women of West Lake. If you happen to have thick hair or are a women of color, this place has made it clear to me that I am an inconvenience to put in the extra time because staff are not trained to work on hair that is not straight or thin. Find your people that make you feel welcome. This place has been my hair home for years. Unfortunately they have made me feel unwelcome and unwanted. I will be moving on. read more

I needed a haircut and have been looking for the right stylist for a while. I last minute booked with Abby today. She was fantastic! For the first time in a long while I found a stylist who really listened to what my issues were and cut a ton of weight out and I was left with an adorable cut that flattered my face and was easy to manage. All the staff was really positive. So impressed with the shampoo room. And I loved the hand massage and so clever by management to use that moment of special service to rebook me. 8/3/2023 Review Received the WORST haircut of my life from Ruiz Salon off N Lamar by Steven, a master stylist. The cut itself was $155 so I went in expecting perfection. I ended up with super shaggy and blunt layers that were cut WAY too short. The layers cut are at least 4 inches shorter than the ends of my hair. My head looks like a mop and I am extremely unhappy with my service. My hair was OVER-styled with a gaudy blowout before I left the salon which made it easier to disguise flaws and lack of attention to detail. The screenshot in my review is what I asked for. You'll see my cut looks NOTHING like it. 0/10 would not recommend. 8/3/2023 Review Update Sharon Shaw was able to fix my hair as much as she could. At the end of the day, my layers were just cut way too short but Sharon was able to help blend it in more and not look so choppy. If you are planning a visit to Ruiz salon and have pin straight hair, I'd recommend seeing Sharon. The salon as a whole is still under review. I don't need all the bells and whistles (i.e. wine, robes, products, formal questionnaire (especially if it's not going to be followed)). I just want QUALITY service for cut and color. I've been coming here for years and have even brought in two referrals, so I'm happy with service overall. What I don't like is the tipping aspect. I have always understood this salon as having a no tip policy, but the last several times I've been in, I have been prompted to tip when checking out. I also recall the website used to have language that indicated Ruiz was a no-tip salon, but I'm not seeing that language anymore. Would appreciate some clarity here. read more

I was so nervous to sit in another salon chair after my horrible balayage experience in San Marcos. Jamie made it so easy and walked me through everything she was doing! She made sure she knew exactly what I wanted before even cutting my hair. I really appreciate her taking the time to explain everything to me and give me some good advice! I can't remember the last time I walked out of a salon as happy as I did leaving Ruiz! The atmosphere is so relaxing and it makes you feel pampered! I have been seeing Melissa for color at Ruiz for six years. I had been with an AVEDA Salon in Minneapolis (JUUT) for about 30 years and they gave me a referral into Ruiz. The techs are well trained, polite, competent. I like the natural products and focus on sustainability. Like many, I have been a bit concerned about returning to service providers while COVID-19 cases are growing in Texas. But i have confidence in the management team at Ruiz, and it looked like they had a well-thought out plan to open the salon safely. When I arrived a week ago Thursday, I was very impressed with the operational overhaul they had executed to serve customers. They have a one way in one way out entry and exit process. They have a thorough check in process. They turned a mini mall hallway into a waiting area because their former waiting area is now a "comb out" station. Stylists are spaced out safely. At the shampoo bowls, you patiently wait after your shampoo for the tech to sanitize the bowl, chair, products, tables., counter. I commend the salon for their focus and training of the staff. I felt like they were doing everything they can to prevent virus spread. Thank you! read more

I've had great color and haircuts here for years, but customer service has been a mixed bag. It feels more like a spa than a salon - you wear a comfy robe, complimentary wine, and a neck plus hand massage. Stylists are super skilled. I've had some poor experiences with customer service when they were unhelpful in rescheduling me or addressing my questions. Pro tip: each stylist is a different level, which corresponds to a different price level for the same services. Do you enjoy condescending front desk staff? Do you enjoy sitting in a salon for hours due to a slow stylist and not having a heat lamp to process? Do you enjoy being scolded by your stylist? Do you enjoy being surprised by your final bill multiple times? If so, definitely come to Ruiz salon and see Laken! I had my hair done 3x (summer 2020, fall 2020 and spring 2021), I even came for a consult before I had my first coloring session. The first time, I was warned that conversation would be kept to a minimum because the cost of the highlight is based on TIME. I was surprised they they didn't use a heat lamp to process my color, but instead told me to sit in the lobby (aka hallway) for over 45 minutes. I was also surprised when my stylist left while my hair was being dried by someone else (mind you, this is the first time I ever got my hair done by her). Then I was surprised again when I checked out and was going to be charged more for the amount of toner she used (which was not discussed with me). It wound up looking pretty good, but returned a few months later to have her balayage my hair instead of highlight it. When she did a half head balayage, it went smoothly. It took way too long, but I knew to expect the long process time and that she would not talk to me during the appointment . Additionally, there were no surprises when I checked out, as the toner was part of the price. I was excited to go back for a 3rd time to get a full head balayage. However, this final time, I was disgusted by how I was treated. The appointment was taking so long, literally hours, since she is so meticulous with her balayage technique (which I have to admit, is not very impressive. I wanted to make some conversation with Laken, so I asked a question. She responded with UTTER PANIC saying "DO NOT MOVE!!" (I am certain I didn't move my head to ask a question). She acted as if I knocked bleach all over the place, and quickly grabbed the cling wrap to protect the strand of hair she just painted. After she was done scolding me, she asked me to repeat the question. I told her that it didn't matter and then we did not speak the rest of the appointment. She handled it completely unprofessionally, especially since she makes small talk with all the other staff during the appointment. Just not with her clients. Since I was 6 months pregnant, I made a point when I sat down at the beginning of the appointment that I'd like to be out quickly. I even cut 4 inches off my hair before the appointment to speed it up, since she is sooooo slow. What really was interesting is that the woman who washed my hair after I was done processing, started to pitch me another stylist who was more talkative and faster. The final straw, was once again, when I was checking out, the price did not match what we had discussed. She once again tried to charge me for more toner ($40) even though it was part of the price last time AND my hair was shorter than last time. The front desk staff was absolutely useless trying to fix the error, and blamed me for not understanding the pricing structure. It was a mess. With her prices going up to $335 for a full head balayage (which is more than I pay in NYC) and her unprofessional behavior, I am done with Laken and Ruiz salon. read more

Shani is my colorist-savior! I had paid another colorist at the salon for balayage and hated it. My hair looked like I had bleached my entire head and let it grow out for six months--my husband could have done that to me. Shani took my appointment even though it was someone else who messed up my hair, and spent almost FOUR HOURS (the appointment was booked for only 2 hours) getting my hair to look good. She stayed almost 2 hours past closing on a Saturday night--if that isn't dedication, I don't know what is. She was also extremely, extremely gracious about it. Shani's magic are the photos taken inside except for the one with the harshest lighting. What my hair looked like before I went to her are the photos taken outside and the one with the really harsh lighting. (Please read the captions.) I cannot stress enough how amazing Shani is. Seriously, Shani wants to make sure her work is basically perfection. What more could you ask for? She definitely knows what she's doing and will make sure you end up leaving the salon looking your best. read more

I've gone to Ruiz for a number of years. I quit because the price for a trim just got too high. When I started it was 55 a haircut and the service was exceptional. I stopped going when.the trim went to $105/110. The times before the price increase were not relaxing. The wash with massage was rushed and choppy..so when it hit over $100 I decided I'd find another place. I do like that they try to pay fair wages and have a career path.. but it was the same old cut with a lessor experience. If my hair was more complicated I'd might pay that price. I went in for a hair color consultation and then another appointment for the actual color change. It was absolutely not what I had showed her in pictures or had been promised in any way. Also, yes I know that it's never going to look exactly like the picture but it literally barely showed a change. My hair color looked almost exactly the same as before my appointment with a slight shimmer.. I had asked for a strawberry blonde and my hair was nowhere near that. I called the salon twice to get it redone/touched up/looked at (anything they can do really). I left one voicemail, no call back. Then I left called back about a week later and left a message with the receptionist with a promise that my hair colorist would call me back. No call was ever received. I gave up. Would not recommend. Almost 5 stars- the actual hair cut and color service was great. Alex and Sasha were so nice and did a wonderful job. Overall I was very happy with the final product. Sasha recommended great shampoo and conditioner for my hair that I've been loving so far- and in my visit I learned that the previous products I was using were actually killing my color! The reason for the star reduction was because of the experience I had with the check out desk attendant. I had a late evening appointment, so by the end of the appointment it was almost closing time. I had come prepared to pay in cash and when I walked up I saw that the young lady was balancing the drawer. I immediately felt bad because I also have to balance and close the cash drawer at work so I know what it's like when you finish it and there's a last minute payment, but it was her reaction that made me feel even more terrible. I let her know right away that I was planning on paying in cash and she immediately got this crushed look. The other front desk girl started giggling and rolled her eyes. I understand that she was probably very close to balancing it out, if not already finished, but that's not the type of reaction you should have in front of a paying customer... in my opinion. read more

I've had some trouble finding a hair team here in Austin (think tiger stripes and 4" of hair chopped off unevenly when I asked for a trim). I so wish I would have found Ruiz sooner and I can't say enough good things. Both professionals really listened to me and the results are excellent. Jaunita managed to fit Sharon in on the same day... she's a miracle worker. The whole place is very organized, professional, clean and friendly. Highly recommend. read more

I have been a customer at this salon for 15 years and was shocked at my treatment by their new-ish manager Jim today. After sitting in the waiting room for over 30 minutes past my appointment, I went to inquire for the second time and was told by the "manager in charge" that my stylist was helping someone else during my appointment time as a favor to him. His tone was dismissive and incredibly disrespectful. When I asked for an apology, he became aggressive and although the words "I'm sorry" technically came out of his mouth, they could not have been less sincere. My stylist overheard the exchange and apologized to me several times. She was very professional. However,if this level of disrespect for the client is tolerated by the salon now, it isn't a place I choose to take my business. read more

The best thing about this place is that I always get what I expect: a great quality haircut and superb customer service, all thanks to Steven. I can't say enough, he knows my hair and he is a perfectionist. I notice little things he does to ensure the hair is cut perfectly which I have never seen before w/ my previous stylists. He aims to please - and he always gets it right the first time. I never have to ask for a readjustment or trim. I pay a flat rate of $55 that includes wash, scalp massage, facial (during the wash), haircut, and hand massage to end it all. That's just enough pampering to keep you in line but not too much where you feel like it's overdone. And I've tried tipping but he absolutely refuses due to the policy, I think it's cool that I can just pay a flat rate and I'm all set. read more

Just don't go here! For some reason it won't let me post my review. On the ruiz site... My hair... Not the best I feel bad given I came in not the last time but the time before as be my guest. Which was great but my highlights were BAD last time to the point I went in to get fixed but I don't think they're fix not to mention I told her I didn't want a treatment that she forced me to get after I said many times I don't want and don't think I need and honestly doesn't make my hair feel good. Yet she made me feel dumb for saying so and I sadly said ok I guess I'll get it after four times of saying no. ($40)Then I get to the check out with another surprise of another extra $30 since she said my hair takes longer to do... which I never was told would be more! When I asked her she said we talked about that but...we didn't. Never was told it would be more only my hair takes longer. So would have been nice to know it would cost more. Also with getting my full highlight is a joke specialy with extra time. And not only that giving she didn't check before washing when I went to get my hair done the first time nor the fix before washing it wasn't ready. So a bad color! And instead of being like that's my bad she knew it because brought to my attention which I already knew it needed to sit longer she said, "We need to let it sit on your hair longer and I'll make note of it for next time." Well I don't want to wait for "next time" for my hair to look better. So which that being said and friends and family telling me my hair doesn't look as good as it normally does. So to tell them where not to go I'm pretty upset and will be calling to cancel my appointment that's scheduled for next time. Giving the "fix" is not fixed and now my hair isn't going to be in good shape and I'll need to make a appointment elsewhere after spending $200 to get my hair colored. Very disappointing. I LOVE this salon! The same stylist has cut my hair since 2007, and I wouldn't have it any other way! If you've never been to an Aveda salon, GO!!! I've been to others outside of JR, and this salon offers a superb Aveda experience, better than other Aveda salons even, IMHO. From the soothing scalp massages, the cooling eucalyptus oil covered in a hot towel, wonderful smells, hand massages, products that work wonders, free wine, and professional staff, Jackson Ruiz has it all! Pricing is great compared to other high end salons in town. The 6th and Lamar location has a parking lot, so parking is never issue. read more

Received a text message confirmation on July 1 for appt on July 5th. Called on July 3rd to inquire if appt included color. Was informed there was NO APPT ON THE BOOKS! However, receptionist got me an appt for July 6th, and it was for color. Arrived 35 minutes early. Was seen on time, but after 10-minutes of showing colorist what I wanted (color roots, blend with blonde ends like balyage), she began offering another option; she felt I would not like what I was proposing. She said she would keep blonde tips and just add a few low lights to blend it in. Colorist pressured me to agree on her proposed color or come back another day, but I had an interview next day, so decided to go with her suggestion. End result, one dark overall color. No blonde tips. Price was almost $300! I will NOT be going back. UPDATE: In fairness, I was offered to come back for more highlights and chose not to because a friend advised me the color would look better after 3-4 shampoos. True enough, I see more blonde streaks now that I've washed it a couple of times, and it has lightened up to a better shade of brown than before. Still I'm taking 2-stars off for having lost my appointment and over-pricing. I have compared prices at other salons and haven't found anything close to Ruiz's price - that includes longer balyaged hair. read more

I went with my Daughter and niece for blow outs for my Brother's wedding a couple of weeks ago, 10/12 to be exact. The salon is beautiful, clean and the people are courteous and hospitable, but if you have curly hair don't get Jordan. Very nice lady but she struggled with my hair!!! My niece who has straight hair got someone else she looked gorgeous! My daughter got the same lady who did my Niece's hair, my kid has wavy hair, she too wasn't so lucky! Anyway, 155.00 dollars for the three of us and my hair turned into a Madusa by the time I got into the limo with my brother, which was less than 3 hours later. By 6 pm my hair was up in a bun since it was frizzy and horrible. Same with my Kid. Nice people but curly hair isn't their thing.... read more

Oh my gosh. This is the best short haircut I've had in at least 2 years, so kudos to Jackson Ruiz and Ted. The hand massage and neck massage during the haircut was so relaxing, and I really love the smell of Aveda products. They are a little pushy with selling products, but frankly, I liked the stuff they put in my hair so much that I think I'm going to go back and buy some. Supermarket spray-gel is just not cutting it. I also really, really appreciate that Ted asked how I like to style my hair before he finished the cut, because I hate it when I end up with super puffy hair when I wanted it smoothed out. They also don't take tips, which makes me a little uncomfortable, but apparently their stylists get health insurance and a living wage. The haircuts are affordable at around $50 including tip. read more

I made an appointment online with a new stylist for a simple bang trim. I haven't been here since 2019 and got my bangs cut here. Twenty minutes from the appointment they called me and said that since I haven't been here since 2019 and I made an appointment with a new stylist that they would not be able to just trim my bangs and I'd need to get an entire haircut first. This is the weirdest rule I've ever heard what if I never want to get my hair cut and just my bangs? It never said anything online before making my appointment about this and I just think it's extremely unprofessional to cancel twenty minutes before an appointment because I was already on my way there. I felt like they really cared about my hair and my time. I've only had two cuts here so far but both of them have been the best cuts of my life- seriously. I wasn't expecting much and I hate getting haircuts - but I had an amazing experience here! I went at 2pm on a Saturday which was a very busy time, but in a lively vs. stressful way. I almost wish the haircut had taken longer because my experience with Kali was incredible, she was so chill and gentle but also a great listener. I loved walking in and the staff being so gracious, then being offered a free beverage (coffee, tea, wine, etc) and a silk robe to wear while they washed my hair in a soothing dark room with heated sinks, essential oils, and comfy pillows. Then you have the haircut and I was just so calm, and having a hand massage during the blow dry was so relaxing. Then they did a free makeup touch up to fix my foundation/blush and even added some mascara - all this for $45! I had the new guest coupon for $20 off, but this still was such a great experience for such a good price. Definitely excited to get a haircut again (for once!) Did not give me what I asked for. My stylist awkwardly blamed the scheduler for a scheduling mishap which is why she didn't do a good job. I asked that they redo it and when I went in for the second time, she STILL did not get what I asked for. I showed pictures, I told her exactly what I wanted and could not have been more clear. I cannot believe I paid that much money to get .5 shades lighter than my natural brown hair color when I asked for BLONDE. Extremely disappointed and frustrated. The salon has nice vibes and gives you a head massage and blow drys it really pretty but I'll never go back. I had the best experience at Ruiz Salon! I had multiple people recommend it to me it so I finally went, and I was not disappointed. I had Cheri as a stylist, and I'm definitely going to be her repeat customer. I didn't go in with a defined hairstyle due to not finding a salon in Austin that I was into, and she gave me a gorgeous bob with super cute shaggy bangs! Exactly what I was envisioning. The salon itself was clean, stylish, and welcoming, and it's so nice that the gratuity is already included in the price. Although the salon itself is lovely the customer service is pretty disappointing. After 7+ years of growing my hair, I was ready for a change. I picked out the perfect picture to show my stylist and booked my appointment. I could tell with the first cut that I was in trouble, and could tell that my stylist felt the same, as the entire experience felt very rushed and tense. The cut was about 3 inches shorter than I wanted, was completely lopsided and nothing like the photo I provided. In my awkwardness, I didn't know what to say and just wanted to leave asap. Yes, I probably should have said something then but didn't and left in a hurry. The next day I called up an old friend to get the cut fixed and emailed Ruiz in hopes of a refund for the cut. I received a call the today letting me know they were unable to refund me. The manager said they would have been happy to have fixed the issue but since I didn't call to complain and since I had already gotten it recut that there was nothing they could do. read more
