Well hot dang, Maxfield's got itself a facelift! Visited recently for the first time in probably 6 months, and the whole place has been renovated. Updated booths, flooring, decor, and more. A nice refresh while still keeping the classic diner vibes. Love how obvious it is that this is family-run. The staff are long-standing, and were always greeted by the same friendly faces up front. After a 10min wait on a Sunday, we were seated in a booth with (also updated) menus. Seems a lot more condense, as previously there was almost too many options. But fear not, there's still plenty of goodness to pick from. For our kiddos we got a single order of the mickey mouse pancakes for them to share (more than enough). Comes with a big breakfast sausage too, and juice. We chose a side of fruit to add. I had the an egg white omelette with mushrooms and spinach. It came with English muffins, yay! Also added an order of turkey sausage on the side. And my husband? Could not stop raving about the breakfast burrito. Hard to impress this man when it comes to food, but he absolutely loved it. Must say though, it's a shock to walk away spending $75 (after tip) at a diner for three breakfasts. Here's to hoping these prices don't keep rising. I've yet to try any of their lunch-type items, so will add that to the bucket list. read more

I've been coming here for several years, and I've never had a bad experience. NOT ONCE. If you're looking for something negative in this review, you won't find it. This place has earned every bit of the praise in this review. 1. Atmosphere-When you walk in, there's a small waiting area where you check in with the hostess. The cafe is a comfortable size, bright (especially now with the remodel), clean, and always welcoming. I've never encountered sticky menus, messy tables, or anything that would gross me out. It's a clean environment. 2. Owner Presence & Service- One of the standout qualities is the owner. She is always present, always upbeat, and always engaging with guests. You can feel that this is a family owned and family operated establishment. She's hands on in every way. I've seen her wrapping silverware, clearing tables, seating guests, checking people out...you name it. The only reason I haven't seen her cook is because the kitchen is closed off. I wouldn't be surprised if she did help with cooking! Her warmth and energy set the tone for the whole restaurant, and it's one of the things I appreciate most. I'm sure this is one of the reasons why they are so successful. Because it is always busy. 3. Food Quality- The food is always great. Their pancakes are my personal favorite. Always fluffy and delicious. The menu covers just about every breakfast option you can think of from crêpes, waffles, pancakes, skillets, omelettes, corned beef hash, and even a Greek skillet with gyro meat. I like that they offer plenty of combo options so you don't have to order everything separately. They also have a nice selection of lunch items. My son never strays from his usual bacon cheeseburger which he says is delicious. 4.Coffee The coffee is solid. Nothing gourmet just good drip coffee. I do love that they keep flavored creamers right at the table. It's a small touch that makes waiting for your food even better. They also come around often with warm-ups, and that consistency goes a long way. To answer your question...YES!!! Yes, I will absolutely be back. For my family and me, it's a matter of "when." We love this place, and we will always continue coming to Maxfields, this specific Bayside location. read more

A classic breakfast restaurant! My family and friends have been going for years now and we absolutely have to visit at least once a year. The service is always great, very friendly, and timely. They are currently renovating the fox point location, excited to see the results! Very open concept seating and will gladly accommodate larger groups. The food always tastes well and they have a well rounded type of menu from blintz, burgers, to skillet bowls. I've gotten the Oreo pancakes since I was a kid, always loved how plentiful the Oreos are and the texture is never soggy. Definitely worth a visit. They get fairly busy especially on weekends but wait times are never unreasonable. read more

Dear Maxfield's, Your renovation makes me sad. Formerly, a warm family centric atmosphere with crayons and colorable kids' menus has been converted to a cold millennial grey with NO crayons! My favorite, Crabby Benny, and my children's favorite, silver dollar pancakes, both eliminated from the new menu. Everything is more expensive, typically $2-4 per dish. It's 10:45 on a Saturday morning: prior to the renovation, I always had to wait 10-20 minutes for seating (I never minded); today, post renovation, there is no wait and their are an abundance of empty tables! You've ruined mine and children's favorite breakfast restaurant. So sad :( read more

This guy, who is supposedly a manager, was so rude! He picked and chose which customers he wanted to seat, skipping those who were waiting for a long time. He sat a lone guy who just walked in at a table for two, before seating 3 different couples who were waiting over 15 minutes ahead of him! He'd refuse to seat an elder lady, because she was waiting on 2 people, but sat another group that came in 15 mins later who were waiting on 4 people to arrive. He was extremely rude to the customer and when questioned, he'd insult the customers and the staff! Sandy, our waitress, was amazing, however this idiot would scream at her and berate her for absolutely no reason. I felt so bad for her and the rest of the stuff! This place is horrible for customer service. The individual that claims he has been seating people for 30 years is a complete jerk! We walked in...put our name down...then proceeded to watch him seat a single guy that walked in 5 minutes after we did. Then he tells an elderly lady than he is not seating her until her entire party gets to the restaurant. I asked her if she wanted to sit in the booth seat they had for pickup orders and her response to me was "No because he will then really look over me". Then a young group of kids walk in...4 to be exact...he seats them. 5 minutes later 2 of their friends, female, walk in. They walk over to the table where the guys are sitting and talk to them. Walk back up front talk to the guy seating people and then all of a sudden he takes the two young female customers over to the table next to the young guys and sits them in front of others that were waiting. Then a single guy walks in, tells them his name, then this guy grabs a menu and utensils and proceeds to sit him at a table for two ahead of us! I then decided it was time to find out how he "seats" people. He tells me "in the order they came in". I proceeded to inform him that he was not following that procedure and he then says to me "I have been doing this 30 years". Well it's very apparent 30 years is 30 years too long that you have been doing this because your system sucks and your customer service attitude is also horrible! But with that being said they are lucky they have a great service staff and the waitress, Sandy, was very nice and honestly she should be running the front of the house! Shortly after we were seating we saw Wendy, who usually is at the front counter, and THAT'S who should be seating people because I have been coming here for years and she has always been pleasure dealing with. read more

Great food and service. Long lines on weekends. Go on Monday through Friday. Parking is often crowded, so park far away and walk. The breakfast food will not disappoint. Coffee is okay but the orange juice is always fresh. The menu is really wide, I'd recommend that Maxfields narrow it down a wee bit. I've gone there for years. maxfields in bayside has a companion restaurant on mayfair road, but in the battle of west side suburbs vs the north shore I lean towards the later. Breakfast is the main attraction- huge skillets and omelets, pancakes, low cal-high protein dishes, but they also do lunch - dinner sandwiches and specials. Service is always fast and efficient -- north shores was just as good as the Mayfair location. I prefer the breakfast foods at these type of restaurants but it's all pretty good. Can barely get a walker in the restroom -- definitely not usable by a wheelchair user who can't even get into the stall. The toilet in the one stall with grab bars -- is the old low kind, not the comfort height toilet. Those are sold everywhere. No excuse to not have one. The staff is friendly and the food came pretty quickly, but I kind wish the portion is a bit larger. I ordered the veggie skillet, and the asparagus clearly has been yellow and tasted sour, but the taste overall is okay and tolerable. Other ppl on our table were satisfied with their food in terms of amount and taste. My family has been eating here since we moved in 39 years ago. It was called something else back then. We still go there for breakfast. There are no more dinners since Covid. This all started very badly there. First they had me wait, and it wasn't until much later that I realized that they wrote my name wrong and I was passed over many times. After an extra 20 minutes of so they offered me a cup of coffee for the inconvenience (really!??) After late table, cold food, basically no service and my wife just not being able to eat after all of that - they still felt the need to charge me. I gave them several opportunities to try and make up for the mess (invite me back, buy me a "hot meal") however, no dice. Apparently I was simply a pesky customer and they didn't care if I returned or not. Don't know if they have any other locations, however I would avoid the Fox Point/Bayside location like the plague. 1. I declined the pancakes and waffles at this "pancake house", because they don't offer real maple syrup (not even as an add-on). Get a clue, guys. Your food ain't cheap. Why would I want to pour sugar goop onto it? If I can afford to eat there, I can afford an extra dollar or two for actual syrup. 2. A pleasant enough place, with adequate food. . . but these other, less important things, are worth mentioning: A. Needed a second paper napkin. Was given an entire new set of cutlery, pre-rolled into a napkin. Overkill. Wasteful (washing lots of clean, unused cutlery for no reason). Stupid. B. I waited tables for several years. I'm generous with my tips (and reviews) when service is good; merciless when it's bad. My server did offer me more coffee -- but it was that one, single time which is instantly recognizable as the standard quota in an establishment that does things a certain way, and only that way. ("I've handed you your bill (quickly); you've had your one cup, and one refill; except for you paying me, we're done.") The server also committed the Cardinal Sin: Didn't bother to swing by to ask how everything was. An easy thing to do. The food at Maxfield's is always good. The pancakes are their specialty and they never disappoint. The omeletes are great as well and have a lot of variety (try the Hawaii Five-O omelet). The coffee is plentiful--perhaps to make up for the thimble-sized juice glasses--and if you dig deep into the creamer dish you will be rewarded with flavored creamers. My main reasons for three stars are the lack of a waiting area (I feel bad in the winter months when I'm barely two feet from the front table, but there's no where else to stand) and that I almost always seem to get the same young, surly waitress with funky glasses. Her opening line last time of "What can I get cha?" failed to impress and her personality was as sparkling for the remainder of the meal. read more
