Second time here. The place is tucked among several other businesses and restaurants. There are several patio tables out front. The front is all glass, which brings in plenty of natural light. Once inside, you are greeted at the hostess desk, and there are a couple of different seating areas. The design is fresh, modern, and clean. We got a booth and were immediately greeted by our server. We ordered our drinks (latte and hot tea) and then quickly followed up with our food: Very Berry French Toast and Avocado Toast (with poached eggs). It didn't take long for the food to arrive. Everything was the right temperature, very flavorful, well presented, and good portions. The French toast had excellent textures (coated with Cinnamon Toast Crunch), and the poached eggs were perfectly cooked. I also liked the feta cheese on the avocado. We received great service the entire time, with the small exception that I had to remind my server for more hot water. Definitely a place I would return to.

Cute place that wasn't super busy on a Sunday brunch, but still with constant stream of people coming in and out. First impressions is that the staff looked pretty gloomy overall. No one smiled or greeted us, but were pretty much matter of factly standing there, and overall not happy looking about having a big group (of 12) to set up for outside (we asked for outside, since the weather was so nice). The outside set up was ok. The tables were smallish and lightweight, and the umbrellas were bumping on each other so we couldn't keep them up without them touching each other and somehow making the table lopsided when we tried. Not a big deal, and we just ended up folding up all the umbrellas and pulling out sunglasses. Our server came and took our orders, and was quick and efficient about it, but again, no smiles or welcoming, but rather brusque and a tad annoyed like. So up to here, not too pleased, and a little miffed because I felt like we weren't really welcome. But after our server took our orders, things turned positive. Our server totally changed pace and came back often to look in on us and keep our coffee mugs filled, and to make sure we had everything. She also was right on it when we requested things like ketchup, and even though we were outside, she made sure to bring everything out very timely. I guess it just takes a while for things to warm up. Overall, I thought she did a wonderful job despite my first impressions. The food - was good. Steak Breakfast Bowl Hany and I shared cuz we had actually already had breakfast (long story). I asked for the potatoes on the side (keto), and they brought both potatoes and eggs on the side, plus an extra plate (thoughtful!!). The mix was very tasty. Hany said the potatoes were meh, and I agreed, but I think it was because it was put on the side rather than mixed in with the rest of the dish. Totally on me. I would absolutely get this dish again. And our friends shared their thoughts: Shakshuka A friend did this dish because she has egg allergies. She said it was good, but a little less spiced than she has had before, but would order again. BTW, eggs over easy were right on the money Canela Supreme Pancakes (GF) Looked delicious and tasted delicious. He said the peanut butter, honey, cinnamon sauce was scrumptious. Pancakes Personally, I thought the 4 layers of this regular pancakes simply dusted with powdered sugar looked better than the supreme version, but it could be because they were more fluffy, not being gluten free. It was apparently just as tasty, too, cuz friend ate half of it, after finishing his bowl of steak bowl! Steak & Eggs It was cooked well, but friend actually liked it more medium-rare. The server forgot to ask how he likes his steak. (Like I said, she didn't turn out to be stellar until after the orders were in for some reason) Blueberry waffle The single waffle was missing the powdered sugar and looked pretty underwhelming compared to the delicious looking pancakes, especially with the fresh blueberries forming a single layer, and kind of disappearing into the waffle holes. Definitely not camera friendly and not something I would get again for $15. Omelet Forgot to ask what kind of omelet she got, but friend's omelet looked great, fluffy and filled. The side of fruits also looked very fresh. Smoothie Friend says it had the taste! But it was watery, more like juice than a smoothie. Bummer. Overall, I'm giving the place 4 stars without considering the initial impressions because I feel that how I leave a place is important and I definitely left feeling well taken care of and like I would return. But next time, I will sit inside despite the gorgeous weather cuz I like a solid table and chairs. And I would get the steak bowl again. But I would definitely skip the waffle.

Really nice area, but pretty small and cozy space. Food was delicious and the crepes weren't eggy at all, which I loved.

Monte Cristo and Canela iced coffee

My partner and I visited Canela Café around 12:30pm on a weekend and were impressed right away by how quickly we were seated. The service throughout the meal was friendly, attentive, and surprisingly fast -- definitely a strong point here. We ordered a mix of drinks and brunch favorites: a mimosa, cranberry mimosa, Canela iced coffee, the Meat Lovers breakfast bowl, and the Monte Cristo. The food overall was excellent. The Meat Lovers bowl had a great ratio of meat to veggies and carbs and was seasoned really well. The portions were generous for the price, especially the Monte Cristo -- it was huge and tasted great. A couple of small things could've been better: the cranberry mimosa leaned so heavily on champagne that it was hard to pick up much cranberry flavor, and the mimosas in general felt a little overpriced. Also, the French toast on the Monte Cristo was very thick. Still tasty, but a thinner cut would've made it easier to eat and a little less overwhelming. The Canela Iced Coffee was the perfect ratio of Irish cream to coffee. Overall, though, we really enjoyed our brunch. Good food, fast service, solid portions, and reasonable pricing compared to similar brunch spots. We'd definitely come back -- maybe just skip the cranberry mimosa next time.

Went here for the first time and everything was above my expectations. Our server Guillermo was excellent. He was informative of the menu and had great customer service. The food was made fresh and came in a timely manner.

I recently had a wonderful brunch at Canela Cafe. The variety of breakfast and lunch options was impressive. We tried the Power Omelet and the monthly omelet, both of which were fantastic. You can even upgrade your side to one of their specialty pancake items! The staff was very friendly, and the service was excellent--we were in and out in about 45 minutes. They had a lot of seating so great place for a large party. I highly recommend this spot for breakfast or brunch.

Athena's Mediterranean Omelet and Blueberry Waffle
    Isabella K.

Canela Cafe is great little breakfast spot. The Blueberry Waffle was light and fluffy and packed with fresh blueberries! The orange juice (not pictured) had to be freshly squeezed -- it was just too good to come from a carton. The coffee came from Stone Creek and it was really good and Athena's Mediterranean Omelet was absolutely huge and yummy with tons of feta, according to my partner. The restaurant gives off stereotypical millennial brunch place vibes, but not egregiously so. There's plenty of seating both inside and outside, and my party of two was seated promptly around 9 a.m. on a Saturday. The service was spectacular. Jodie did a great job! If I could, I would only give Canela Cafe 4.5 stars simply because of the price. My waffle was $14 with no sides. Knock that down to $10 OR chuck in a side of fruit or bacon or something and I wouldn't be complaining. You'll get the best value if you order an omelet. It comes with fruit or breakfast potatoes AND toast or pancakes all in the ballpark of $16. Don't waste your money on an overpriced waffle, go with the omelet to get more food. In total, my party of two spent about $50 (including tip). If I'm on this side of town again, I'd definitely eat here a second time.

Chicken and biscuits with chicken chorizo gravy

Service is so attentive and kind always a great experience. The food is always amazing the chicken chorizo gravy on the chicken and biscuits is always top notch, the Nashville chicken sandwich was amazing not as hot as you can imagine but has a sweetness to it very good the Mac and cheese could use a little bit more flavor but overall great. The ambiance there is relaxing and very peaceful to have a enjoyable brunch no doubt. If you haven't been here you must give them a chance you will no regret it at all.

Made a quick stop at Canela Cafe right before the road trip back to Chicago. This place was packed. There was a family who decided to eat outside in 45 degree weather just to skip the wait. The service was decent. Everyone was nice but it took a little while for our server to greet us and bring our drinks. I assume because they were swamped with so many tables. The food ok. My bf and I got the herbivore bowls with an addition of guacamole. While everything taste fresh, it just didn't taste seasoned. We also got a fruit bowl and I was happy with the assortment of fruits provided. The decor is nice. They had some cool LED brunch signs and a small patio right outside the window. If we were able to give half stars I would give a 3.5. Nothing was bad, but nothing was great either.

    - delicious food, good service, cozy ambiance - no…read morereservation can be made for brunch - excited to come back for a sweet option Happy to get a seat at this tasty diner! With their rotating menu items and weekly specials, I am definitely coming back after having such a flavorful and fun meal. Waited about an hour on a busy Saturday since one of their locations was closed, but the food was well worth it! I had gotten Wolfie's Patty Melt and it was filling and a great start to our morning. The bread was nice and crisp from the buttered griddle and held everything together perfectly. Inside the crunchy sandwich were 2 seasoned patties and enough gooey cheese to make it rich, but not heavy. To contrast the fatty flavor, there was a slightly tart bacon jam and onions that were truly caramelized. Overall really tasty sandwich with no notes! In the description it says there is a sauce, but I could only taste the onions and jam, so I'm not too sure what it added. The side of fries was ok, but I think some crispy thinner ones would have been better with the sandwich. For my drink, I got a hot Ube Chai. The chai was strong and had a spicy kick to each sip. Already a subtle flavor, the ube was not very strong with the chai mixed in, but still added fun color. The design on top was also very cute and added another dink of sweetness. My girlfriend got the Spamelette for her main and it was pretty pretty and delish. Not too often that you see Spam, but when you see it, trust it earned its spot on a menu! The big chunks of Spam and accouterments gave each bite a pleasant feel and one full of flavor. I was skeptic of the mushrooms at first, but they were seasoned well and added another kind of texture to the meal. I think my favorite toppings were the drizzle of kewpie and the green onions... not sure if it counts as a topping, but the tamari glaze of the spam made it delish. Taste aside, it was also a pretty meal! Pook got a Hot Chocolate for her drink. Nice simple drink for the cold weather. We would have liked to see some more chocolatey flavor, but still a good milky drink for the meal. This drink also had a fun design and nice cream top, yum yum yum. This was such a tasty meal and they have lots of other options that I was debating on getting - I guess we gotta come back! It was a really cold day, but the cozy atmosphere and hot drinks with our food made it a great experience. We had originally planned on going to the Downtown location, but it was closed because of heating problems. I wish there was a bit more uniformity between their menus, especially since the Brewers Hill menu has different items and is smaller, so it feels like there is quite the difference between locations. Going off of that point, I am excited to try their dinner menu when it releases and see how it compares to when we ate Downtown! I am not sure how the places differ, but I felt the food here to be more flavorful than the other location. In addition to the dining area, they had a small shop and coffee area in the back while you waited for your table. It was fun and made time pass faster, but I feel as though that area is also perfect for dining. Maybe there are specific reasons why it isn't, but just a thought. Hope to come back soon!

Perfectly cooked medium rare steak with chimichurri, crispy-runny eggs, and excellent potatoes holding it all together. Brunch It Up (possibly in the middle of rebranding to just "Brunch.") is a classic breakfast spot in downtown Milwaukee...we were there on a Sunday morning...high brunch time, and were seated quickly upstairs. The place had an overall run-down vibe to it...scuffed paint on the walls and a general feeling of not quite matching the quality of the upscale brunch spot implied by their modern logo. Menus...I normally don't comment on the menu itself but our table featured no less than 4 different menus...the regular menu, a drink menu, a specials menu and a mimosas menu...choices are wonderful, but the immediate reaction is this is a whole mess of menus on the table, and I don't know what to look at first. It felt haphazard. Let's move on to the coffee...Coffee is an essential part of the brunch experience. Even at a diner, you want it to be strong...the mug it came in was nice, but it was weak coffee. I need coffee to kick my butt, and if you're serving what's close to "browned water" at a breakfast place, you're missing the mark. How about the food? I can't fault them for the generosity of the portions, but will say individual dishes were way too much for my wife and I...we wish smaller portions were available, so so much didn't go to waste. My wife had the Egg and Waffle sandwich with waffle fries. It was fine. I had the Harvest Hash made with egg whites...the eggs were a little overcooked. (Egg whites require a thoughtful touch when cooking them so they are finished white and not browning all over.) There are plenty of fresh tomatoes, mushrooms, and peppers in there (I guess that's the extent of the harvest in Milwaukee) The hashbrowns it all sat on were undercooked. We were excited about the croissant beignets...Available were the regular ones with chocolate or strawberry dipping sauce, and a special with a fruit dipping sauce. They couldn't mix and match sauces, so we got the special. They were okay but a bit over-fried, losing the croissant texture altogether ...I mean, there's nothing wrong with deep-fried dough with sweet things to dip them in, but we do wish they hadn't fried the croissant out of them to give us the unique experience implied by the name. The menu has plenty to choose from...every breakfast savory or sweet thing you could imagine...and on the nicely designed, modern-looking menu at looks like it could be amazing...but everything we got, plus the experience of sitting in a place that felt a little rundown, left us overall disappointed.

Their website has a popup on the home page saying it comes with fried haddock, potato pancakes, applesauce, and rye bread, but the popup doesn't list the price and it isn't available through the online ordering function. I ended up calling in an order to go, substituting wheat bread for the rye, and also added a piece of lemon ginger coffee cake. The lemon ginger coffee cake tasted fine, but man was it dry. Like Sahara Desert dry. Maybe this was an anomaly and their other baked goods are better, but I'd be hesitant to try them based on this coffee cake. Even though the website says the side is potato pancakes with applesauce, my fish fry came with fries. They ended up being the best part of the meal, which I certainly wasn't expecting. Still, I was disappointed cause I prefer potato pancakes and was given their inclusion as an expectation. The wheat bread itself was ok, but the butter was oddly unsalted. The fish, of which there was three pieces, was battered with a hint of beer, but like the butter for the bread there was no salt to speak of in the batter. As much as I didn't enjoy the unsalted butter for the bread, not having salt in the batter for the fish managed to be more unpleasant. Maybe Blue's Egg should just stick with serving breakfast items instead of adding something temporary that they clearly aren't pros at.

We quite literally came here straight from the airport. To make matters worse, we had not eaten anything substantial all day and had actually looked this restaurant up weeks before our trip while researching places to eat the infamous Wisconsin fish fry, so we were really looking forward to the experience. The experience started off poorly when our party was essentially scolded by the hostess for sitting at a table that apparently needed to be cleaned for the wait list. To make matters worse, the busser laughed and joked that we were "in trouble," to which I could only respond, "Sounds like it." Not exactly the welcoming atmosphere you'd hope for as a first time visitor. The fish fry was decent our tab came out to $150 for 5 people, but the service was absolutely subpar and our tip reflected that. We also had to send back two drink glasses because they were dirty one still had lipstick on it, and another had food stuck to the inside of the glass. Overall, this was a very disappointing dining experience. Between the unprofessional treatment, lackluster service, and cleanliness issues, I would not recommend stopping here.
