    explosion roll and saba oshi
    Teresa C.

So nice to discover this hole-in-the-wall sushi restaurant in a strip mall far away from the usual sushi spots. We tried their explosion roll and saba oshi. Reasonably priced, everything were very tasty and had great balance of flavour. With speciality rolls, it is sometimes difficult to get the balance right between the rich sauces, bold vs delicate ingredients, and the seasoned rice. The explosion roll is a glamourous California roll with a decadent sauce and nice pops from the tobiko. The flame-seared saba oshi has got the right balance of savoury/pickled seasonings to offset the oiliness of the fish. These were done just right and were very enjoyable. The important sushi rice was not masked by the intense toppings. We will definitely return to try other dishes.

First time dining at this restaurant after my sister recommended this restaurant. The chef apparently used to work at Minami. We were seated right away. Tea and menus were dropped off. We decided to order the aburi tray ($82) and tempura udon ($14.50). If you ever dined at Minami, then you know you should order the aburi items. Miso soup was dropped off first. There were bits of tofu, seaweed and green onion. Food arrived after a reasonable wait. The salmon, ebi and saba oshi were comparable to high end restaurants quality. I really enjoyed the salmon and ebi oshi. Saba (mackerel) is an oily fish that I eat on occasion, but is not my favourite seafood item. However, it was made well and nicely presented as the salmon and ebi. The red tuna, scallop and salmon nigiri were also nicely presented and tasty. The tempura udon was decent. They had ran out of green beans so we received an extra piece of yam. Tempura was fried well and crunchy. Udon portion size was okay with some veggies and fish cake slice (narutomaki). Service was great. Our server stopped by multiple times to refill tea and clear dirty plates. Definitely, I would recommend this restaurant if you are looking for great quality aburi sushi. The prices are a bit higher than other restaurants, but is cheaper than downtown pricing.

Finally a great place for aburi sushi in Surrey! I was so excited to hear about this place and couldn't wait to try it out when I heard about their aburi sushi platters. Right now, there is a special going on when you order the aburi sushi platter, you get a free aburi tart. Aside from the platter, we also got a explosion roll which is also aburi based and a spicy chopped scallop roll. The sushi was so delicious and didn't have a lot of grease or oil that some aburi sushi places have. I would highly recommend this place! Be sure to call ahead of time as even for take out, wait times can be a bit long right now (it was about an hour wait for our order today).

Good food, service is quite slow but it's a small operation. I'd order takeout next time but overall good food/value for the area.

Menu: Chawan mushi - steamed egg custard with vegetable(bean, shimeji mushroom) and seafood(shrimp and slice of fish) Ankimo - Monkfish Liver with seasonal seafood(scallop and shrimp) Grilled black cod, with saikyo miso and marinated blue fin tuna and cooked egg. Tenpura - seafood (slice of fish, seafood stuffed vegetable and vegetable(shiitake) 9 pieces of sushi Daily miso soup - clam Dessert - kinako and mitarashi dango Chawan mushi was great. I can taste fish based broth and egg custard was very silky and smooth. Decent amount of ingredients sush as shrimp, slice of fish , bean and shimeji mushroom. I wish they served it slightly cooler than too hot. Ankimo - Great item. Monkfish liver was rich and paired with scallop and shrimp so well. Sauce was just ok. Grilled black cod was another great item. Crispy and juicy, just perfectly done. Blue fine tuna was covered by salty marinated sauce which was great when wrapped with seaweed. Cooked egg was just ok Tenpura - Seafood stuffed vegetable was my favorite. Others were also decent. Highlight and stand out item was 9 pieces of sushi. Honmaguro(bluefine tuna) was good. Shari(sushi rice) was nicely seasoned with vinegar, very mild and which I liked it. Tuna was delicious. Sea breem(MADAI) was another good piece. Delicious. Aburi Toro was nicely seared. I wish this item could be a bit more softer and buttery, but it was still good. Akaebi(red shrimp) and Hokkaido sea urchin - Lightly torched the top of sea urchin and its smokiness brought out more sweetness flavor of Akaebi(red shrimp) Hokkaido Scallop - Very smooth, soft and nice texture. Delicious. Kinmedai(Gold eye snapper) -- My favorite. Texture was very soft and chewy, It was great item. Hokkaido sea urchin - Actually, this one was just ok. I wish it could be more creamy. Unagi - One of the best item. It was so fluffy and soft right after chef cooked and served. This is a must try item. Daily miso soup with clam - I can taste fish broth (dashi) flavor so well. Clam was delicious. It was good. Dessert - Kinako coated mitarashi dango -It was nicely chewy and soft. I wish there were more sauce on it. Overall, it worth visiting this place. The only problem is that so hard to get a reservation. Hopefully, I can get next reservation, may be next year.

We love Japanese cuisine so I decided to surprise the hubby with an omakase for his birthday in January. Unfortunately, they have a 6-month wait and I was not prepared so I ended up booking it for our anniversary in May. The food was phenomenal and delicious! I love the chawanmushi loaded with goodies inside. The ankimo (monkfish liver) dish was so tasty with the scallop and prawn. Black cod was cooked to perfection! The nigiris are all so fresh. We quickly put ourselves on the waiting list for after September so we can come here again soon! There's a parking lot just next door. The place inside is small and intimate. Service is great!
