Haven't been to Matt's in a minute and was excited to revisit. Was hoping with all the expansion it kept its charm from the tiny spit a block over. Unfortunately, with a method like "team service," the service was severely lacking. It took several tries to get the basics- water, coffee refills, etc. The omelette I had was fantastic- the onions were delicious. My guest did not like the beans, greens and grains- much of the contents either overcooked or undercooked. A manager unexpectedly took care of the dish on the bill, which was so greatly appreciated. With the team approach to service, those servicing behind the bar either didn't notice or didn't respond to patrons sitting close to us, vaping inside while waiting for their breakfast. This, along with overall service, put a damper on our return to Matt's. Maybe try a day of the week other than Sat/Sunday? read more

The food is good and consistent. The staff is friendly. The remodel/new spot is bigger and holds more people but they did all these upgrades and forgot to put in a $150 changing table. Don't go here if you have littles...unless you're comfortable changing your kid in front of tons of people. Long wait times and no changing table don't exactly match. What makes it worse is that staff claimed to have already recommended putting one in and it hasn't been done. Ownership can do better, camelback has a table available and I'm sure Gilbert does. It doesn't need to be fancy. With (4) bathrooms in the new location, you would think they could accommodate parents. Apparently, they do not care. We won't be back until our kiddo outgrows diapers. Good food, but I was disappointed that no one went to check on us. It was very busy so we took a seat at the end of the bar, and after taking our order and bringing us our food, we were left alone. No one came to see how we were, how's the food, so your drinks need refills..... nothing. The food was good, don't get me wrong, but what happened to the service. I guess it's too big to manage if they seat us where no one remembers "you got someone at the end of the bar, buddy!!" So if you come, just remember sit where you'll be seen. I learned my lesson. This place is so fun, bright, and airy. It was within walking distance of my hotel. I would make sure I went after the early morning rush so there would be no wait. The first time I had the Cheese Omelet, it came with Wisconsin cheddar, aged provolone, or American, folded into three eggs, potatoes, toast, homemade preserves, roasted peppers, or sautéed onions. with home fries. The second time I got The Skinny: Four Egg whites, spinach, onion, and salad. Plus two blueberry pancakes, which were huge. Guy Fieri did NOT steer us wrong with this one We first saw this downtown Phoenix breakfast spot on YouTube when it was a small location -- and now it's expanded, remodeled, and absolutely beautiful. Tons of indoor and outdoor seating, and even on a Monday morning it was packed (but still easy enough to grab a table). The food? So good. That homemade lemonade honey drink is to die for. I had the Big Papa Burrito -- chorizo, potatoes, egg, and cheese wrapped in a fresh flour tortilla made right here in Phoenix -- and it absolutely lives up to the name. Huge and delicious. They carry Arizona-based Gunslinger hot sauce (love the local support), but their in-house hot sauce is my personal favorite. And the pancakes? Fluffy perfection. I was looking forward to trying this place after seeing it years ago on Diners Drive ins and Dives. I finally got around to trying it and the food was dreadfully disappointing. We ordered the pork chop, waffles, royal feast, and Christopher's favorite. The food was incredibly bland, the pesto was too salty, and the Christopher's favorite had tiny pieces of eggshell that were missed. The only thing on the table I truly enjoyed was the strawberry preserve. Maybe the chef was having an off day, but from my experience I do not understand the hype. read more

We saw our server when we ordered food and when we got the check. Food distribution is a mess too-at least have who ordered what at what seat. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. We were a group of 4 and ordered the 2 of the breakfast veggie scramble special - egg scramble, tomatoes, mushrooms, peppers, spinach, with sourdough, hash browns and side of egg, the big Pappa Burrito, an avocado toast and orange juice. The portions are big. Veggie options are very limited and they don't do substitutions (gluten free or vegan). The scramble was good. As a person who doesn't usually eat out, let alone even it breakfast most of the time, I wanted to try out Matt's Big Breakfast. I had no expectations coming in, but it was definitely rustic and rushed food to say the least. The atmosphere of the restaurant was super nice, tall ceilings, nice lighting, very welcoming. When entering to eat the sign did state, see host for indoor or outdoor seating, yet when we were seated we were not offered the option to sit outside, just to sit at a table already made for two, which was fine, but I figured there would be options to sit outside, yet there was not. The only thing that was decent were the chips that came with the chicken sandwich and the freshly squeezed orange juice. As for everything else, it was edible, but not food that fed the soul reminding you of rustic home cooking. I ordered the egg special on Friday with hashbrowns, but was not informed of what was in the egg special at all. We also ordered a chicken sandwich and a short stack of blueberry griddle cakes. When receiving the food, first thing I noticed was the bun to meat ratio on the chicken sandwich, which was a lot more bread than meat to say the least. As for the pancakes they were pretty good except for the center being a little to doughy, probably from the excess use of butter it was cooked with. Then, there was the egg special. The eggs were fine, but under seasoned, the sausage in the eggs did not have the snap a sausage should have or a nice skin on the outside, and it was doused in orange and red peppers, which was unsettling to bite into. The hash browns were extremely crunchy on the outside but raw on the inside and the strawberry jam for the toast (if that's what you'd call a jam) was extremely runny. The only thing I really enjoyed from that plate was probably just the sausage because the toast wasn't even toasted that well either. We ended up taking the leftovers to go, some of which we threw away and the rest that we had to cook further in the microwave. So, would I say $50 well spent, probably not, considering I could have just made a better rustic meal at home for half the price, which is why I don't eat out for breakfast. read more

Avocado spread was very cold so I'm happy they didn't put my egg on top of it which was what I thought they would have done when I ordered together. The sound of metal chairs constantly screeching against the floor made it hard to enjoy the meal. If you're sensitive to noise or nursing a headache, this might not be the most peaceful spot. The hash browns were the highlight: perfectly crispy and addictive. I'd come back just for those. The bacon on the Five Spot Platter was also excellent - crispy, flavorful and not overly greasy. One word "WOW"!!! The guy at the front didn't play when it came to seating and making sure that tables were clean as soon as, someone left to seat the next group/ human. It's not unusual that lots of restaurants have disgusting bathrooms but I'm wondering why restaurants don't invest in having cleaner bathrooms. I'm not speaking about only " Matt's" but lots of restaurants have gross bathrooms. It's disturbing since they work with food! I wish that inspectors of businesses where food is served especially inspect bathrooms. All bathrooms should be newly updated even if the building is outdated in my opinion! Side note not related, but in my opinion, All bathrooms should have sensors on doors and washing sinks so that humans, never have to touch handles in bathrooms nor on the way out of bathrooms. It was definitely a popular Saturday morning spot, but even with the crowd, the wait was only about 15 minutes -- totally worth it! Let me tell you, they call it Big Matt's for a reason -- everything is oversized! My waffle was literally the size of the plate, and the hash browns came out on their own plate. Generous portions and great presentation. My friend ordered the GRAINS, GREENS & BEANS -- a hearty bowl of farro, sautéed local baby spinach, heirloom Anasazi beans, topped with poached eggs, crushed herbs, and pink Himalayan sea salt. This was such a great random find! We were in downtown for some work and were looking for brunch and ended up getting breakfast here. Got seated immediately! The vibe and atmosphere is okayish! Family friendly as well. I got the classic with thick cut bacon, house made strawberry jam and orange juice! My husband he got the avocado toast with a side of apple sausage and coffee.
