This place is so fun, bright, and airy. It was within walking distance of my hotel. I would make sure I went after the early morning rush so there would be no wait. The first time I had the Cheese Omelet, it came with Wisconsin cheddar, aged provolone, or American, folded into three eggs, potatoes, toast, homemade preserves, roasted peppers, or sautéed onions. with home fries. The hash browns were the highlight: perfectly crispy and addictive. I'd come back just for those. The bacon on the Five Spot Platter was also excellent - crispy, flavorful and not overly greasy. One word "WOW"!!! The guy at the front didn't play when it came to seating and making sure that tables were clean as soon as, someone left to seat the next group/ human. Shout out to Iseal and Rachael who were our waitresses and who were both amazing by being on top of everything from making sure we had everything, ( water and coffee topped off, to getting you the bill). Great service to say the least!!! This is such a fast pace environment with tight seating and I'm talking, very close together seating but not bad nor should it detour you. . My only complaint is, I went to wash my hands prior to eating and noticed that their bathrooms are disgusting! It's not unusual that lots of restaurants have disgusting bathrooms but I'm wondering why restaurants don't invest in having cleaner bathrooms. I'm not speaking about only " Matt's" but lots of restaurants have gross bathrooms. It's disturbing since they work with food! I wish that inspectors of businesses where food is served especially inspect bathrooms. All bathrooms should be newly updated even if the building is outdated in my opinion! Side note not related, but in my opinion, All bathrooms should have sensors on doors and washing sinks so that humans, never have to touch handles in bathrooms nor on the way out of bathrooms. It was definitely a popular Saturday morning spot, but even with the crowd, the wait was only about 15 minutes -- totally worth it! Let me tell you, they call it Big Matt's for a reason -- everything is oversized! My waffle was literally the size of the plate, and the hash browns came out on their own plate. Generous portions and great presentation. My friend ordered the GRAINS, GREENS & BEANS -- a hearty bowl of farro, sautéed local baby spinach, heirloom Anasazi beans, topped with poached eggs, crushed herbs, and pink Himalayan sea salt. This was such a great random find! We were in downtown for some work and were looking for brunch and ended up getting breakfast here. Got seated immediately! The vibe and atmosphere is okayish! Family friendly as well. I got the classic with thick cut bacon, house made strawberry jam and orange juice! My husband he got the avocado toast with a side of apple sausage and coffee. The server's work together as a team so expect not to have a dedicated person for your table! Everyone is coming and helping. I loved that. It was quick and responsive. There is road side meter parking available and only offers 2 hours at a time for $3.00. There is outside seating, but appears to only be used for waiting, although I could be wrong. When we were seated we were in a room of our own with a view of the outside. Cute little room and great idea for use of space. The specials menu is on the very back room and big enough the see looking on the window from outside. We asked our server Mario what he recommend and one thing he said was "The Big Pappa Burrito" and I was sold on it. In addition, my kids orders the Waffle with Bacon and the other Griddlecakes with a side of hashbrowns. All of which were a large portion and the price was reasonable as well. What a disorganized nightmare. Tried coming here on a MONDAY at 12pm. Let's start off with the fact that they don't have a host stand... Apparently you're supposed to summon someone to the front of the restaurant with ESP since not a single employee has the wherewithal to look up from their immediate task to acknowledge the front door. Stood in line for over 20 mins to try to put our name in, to no avail. Mind you, the restaurant was half empty and there was only one group of 4 in line in front of us. I have been coming to this establishment since it was a tiny little hole in the wall, before they expanded, and before they had an airport location. Wow! The customer service has really taken a nose dive since then. I had some friends come in from out of town, and decided to show them a Phoenix staple: Matts Big Breakfast, of course!! But, to my surprise, it was definitely NOT the same experiences I've had in the past. It felt MUCH more corporate and disconnected. We wanted to sit outside and they told us that the patio had just closed. We walked into the main dining room, and the manager waved hi to us but then proceeded to buss the tables, go into the kitchen, talk to her staff... as we stood in the doorway and waited. This was on a Monday morning, and there was not that many people there. The food was pretty good! I will give them that. They brought us a side of avocado erroneously and we assumed it was OK to keep, so we took one slice off, and the waiter came back and said sorry this is not yours and took it back. It seemed a bit petty since we had already eaten it, but whatever. The grain bowl that I received was slightly under salted, but overall delicious. My friends enjoyed their food and absolutely loved the fresh squeezed orange juice. I hope the next time I come back I have a better, more organic experience. read more
