I have been wanting to try out Matt's for a while, and I'm thrilled that they've opened up a new location in Epicenter. I stopped in on a Friday morning and snagged one of the last available tables outside. The seating outside is covered since it's located within the breezeway, but the fresh air is nice this time of year. My partner ordered the Friday scramble special and I ordered the waffles and bacon. The food came out pretty quickly. My partner enjoyed his food and my waffle was very tasty. However, the bacon wasn't my preference --it wasn't warm and resembled jerky more than bacon. It was overly chewy and tough. Throughout the meal our server was friendly and attentive. The meal as a whole was solid but not particularly "big" like we were expecting given the restaurant's name. While I wasn't necessarily wow'd, the prices and portions were reasonable given the location and I would come back to try some of the other menu offerings. read more

New spot in the Epicenter at Agritopia in Gilbert! Service was good so no complaints there. Was very busy but they moved through the list pretty quick! They currently don't serve alcohol which isn't a bad thing, but just an fyi in case you're hoping to enjoy a mimosa for brunch. Orange juice is freshly squeezed, and it was alright. Not worth the price in my opinion. I ordered the burrito, and I'd give it a 7/10. It comes with chorizo but it would be much better if they added shredded beef or pulled pork as an option for it. The bacon was delicious, 10/10 there! Would come back for their "Matt's Traditions" which is a daily specials menu. Want to try their huevos rancheros verdes which are served on Mondays. read more

So good here! The wait on a Sunday morning was just 30 minutes, definitely not too bad despite how busy it was. It was nice and clean inside, the music wasn't too loud and the staff was friendly. Ana waited on us and was very nice. Apparently Matt's wife is the one running the kitchen in the back and she is absolutely crushing it. My wife got the grain bowl and I got the Big Papa burrito, and we shared a stack of flapjacks (all pictured). The food was fantastic. The grain bowl was really fresh. The Big Papa burrito had chorizo in it and it was just a great combo of chorizo, egg and potatoes. They cook it all on olive oil too, so you don't get that crappy "I just ate canola oil" feeling afterwards. The flapjacks were fluffy and the perfect size. Their syrup wasn't just sugar and corn syrup but seemed to be home made and fresh. I didn't want to eat them all, but I had to. The price was more than reasonable as well. 4 separate dishes with an extra side and under $60. Also, 20 min after we left, my brother realized that he had accidentally left a little flat paper bag with some stickers we had bought next door on our table. We figured it got bussed and tossed away, but called anyway to see if they had found it. The staff told us to call back in about a half hour. We were driving by and figured we'd stop and they had found it! Covered in grease and cheese so it totally got thrown away (of course, they're trying to turn tables around quickly) but that means someone in this restaurant took the time during a breakfast/brunch rush to dig through trash and find my brother's little bag of stickers. My family and I were in Gilbert visiting when we decided to have breakfast together before heading home. I've had Matt's Big Breakfast before in Phoenix (Arcadia) and loved it! So, I wanted my husband and kiddos to give it a try. The atmosphere is great! From the outside to the inside of the restaurant, everything was nice, modern, and clean. Not to mention, they had great music playing the whole time! When we walked in, the staff greeted us and allowed us to sit wherever we wanted. I really love this concept of sitting where you like and the staff helping each other out to serve the customers. Shows great team work, which they all did! Also, the manager (i think he was) came to our table to see how we were doing and what we thought of the food. It's always nice when management checks in too. The service among all the staff were beyond our expectations. Thank you so much! As for the food, AMAZING!!!! DELICIOUS!!!! SATISFYING!!!! My husband and kiddos were not disappointed. My husband and I had the Chick & Hog, which comes with eggs, ham, toast, and choice of potatoes. We're on a special diet, so we substituted regular eggs for the egg whites. We also chose the home fries, which are my absolute FAVE! I love the flavor put in to the potatoes (rosemary) along with the onions and other seasonings. Such a great combination! The ham was cooked to perfection along with the eggs! The toast was great as well. I like how they added butter to the toast and placed the toasts on top of each other with the butter inside so that the butter melts in to the toast. EXCELLENT! My husband could not believe how good the breakfast was! He really enjoyed every bite! Unfortunately, they do not have a kids menu, but that was okay because we just split a meal between my two daughters (6 y/o and 2 y/o), which fed them both perfectly! They had the cheese omelette with hash browns. Both girls loved it! My 6 y/o bragged about the cheese and how it tasted with the eggs. So much that she asked me to learn how to make them at home. Love that the space has so much natural sunlight from the large windows. All of the staff are friendly and welcoming. I was underwhelmed when reading the descriptions of each breakfast item on the menu, as they make each dish sound basic. 3.5 stars It's a solid breakfast. Pretty much average in my books. We had steak and eggs & pork chop. Pork chop was cooked dry and was overly salted. The salt ruined the dish. Hash browns were good, but it doesn't make up for the loss with the meat. Steak was better cooked, but was still on the dry side. Over medium eggs were cooked to perfection Bottomless coffee was a major plus. Several attendants came around to fill the glass. Near the middle, it started to feel like they were trying to get through customers to make room for those who were waiting. Matt's Big Breakfast was said to be the next big thing that I should try out in the breakfast restaurants. Reports from friends had filtered in that this was the place to try. The place, the staff and food all showed good promise. But ultimately, given the hype, I was disappointed. The location of the new Matt's Big Breakfast in Gilbert (Ray and Higley) is the home of several new shops anchoring the community based strip mall. Matt's fits accordingly with its community table, barside stools, outside seating, and no waiting area. If you don't want to elbow up to a stranger to eat, throw down a mimosa at 8am, sweat outside while consuming breakfast, or stand precariously interrupting constant traffic along the 7 foot wall area while waiting 30min or more for a table, then you might make other arrangements for breakfast. The facility is nice, hip, and happening, while being functionally inept for anyone who actually wants to sit down, inside at a private table for breakfast. The staff was kind, courteous, and well versed in the menu. It was easy to order, and they were accommodating and helpful. That said, the order prep and food delivery seemed out of sync. Two staging areas of food completion made it clear that dishes sat far too long waiting to be picked up, food got cold, and customers were waiting for their order. The manager was very kind and made rounds, asking patrons how things were. This experience all leads up to the food. We ordered 3 dishes for our party - one Big Pappa Burrito, a chick and hog (porkchop and eggs), and a waffle and bacon breakfast. The results for two dishes proved the previous comment about the food sitting in staging areas to be accurate - both the chick and hog and the waffle and bacon entrées arrived lukewarm. Both were cold before they could be consumed. The flavors and prep seemed good, but there is no recovering from having your food served cool. The Big Papa Burrito was good inside, reasonable, and hot. And while it arrived warm, the green chile sauce on it was unimpressive. Given that this is Arizona, the standard is high on Mexican flavored dishes, and this fell short on the scale. If you are looking for a great breakfast, the list of difficulties in getting it at Matt's may be too much for your busy morning. I hope you do better than I did. I won't be back. My experiences at OverEasy, Henhouse or Crackers all beat Matt's by a country mile. read more

This is my second time at Matt's big breakfast- but first at the new Gilbert location. Although warm outside, the patio is in the shade + they had several misters going, so it was quite comfortable! The food was great- tasted fresh, not greasy, some local ingredients. I ordered the BLT (add avocado) with mac salad (wasn't a huge fan of the mac, I'll try coleslaw next time!), but the sandwich was good. My Dad ordered the omelet, which he enjoyed! We no longer have to drive to Matt's in Phoenix! The new location is spacious and includes details that remind of us of the original location but also Gilbert icons and modern design. They offer lots of indoor seating including standard, high top and counter. A covered outdoor area is also available. The food is awesome! The bacon is thick and peppery, both potato options are best in class - buttery, crispy hashed browns or cottage fries with sautéed onions and rosemary. The Hog & Chick is my choice which includes one of the above, breakfast meat choice, 2 eggs and toast. They also offer lunch and I must say that the Reuben is one of the very best in The Valley. Just really not impressed. You think Matt's Big Breakfast, you're hoping big and spectacular. This was my first experience with the chain. This was a lot of food that was just underwhelming and expensive. It's a breakfast shop. It's nice and clean. Staff was super nice. The food just ruined it for me. I had what came out to be a $20 omelet. Cheese, peppers, onions, and ham. I have a basic rule that if a place can do a basic western Omelet, I'm usually going to dig the rest of their food. There was a little bit of ham and heaps of fried peppers and onions. There was so much it was gross. It was as though the cook was angry. What's worse it wasn't mixed I to the inlet. It was just laid into it like an eg sandwich. Just gross. The menu is really small. I'm used to seeing menus like the Hen House and Has Kitchen. The Buzz up the road is another good example of a developed menu. This was novice and poorly executed. See pics for the example. Maybe they had a limited menus since they just opened recently? The coffee was great. I had it black. Tasty and not too bitter or acidic. I'd come back for more. They have a breakfast bar, but it doesn't appear they do alcohol. Maybe I missed it. Overall I just wasn't impressed especially for the price. Yah, they'll do okay since they are attached to the Taylor apt complex, but It's not really enticing. The pancakes were delicious but unfortunately, nothing else that we ordered would draw us to come back. To sum it up, the food was just OK because it lacked flavoring and was pretty bland food in a hipster atmosphere. Our family of 4 ordered several items from the menu and unfortunately nothing stood out to make us want to come back especially for a tab of $72 for brunch (two adults and two kids). We came on Saturday afternoon around 1 PM and were quoted a 10 minute wait which was about accurate. Once we were seated and ordered it took about 20 minutes for the food to come out. We had the big butter burger, bacon, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich, the meal with two sausage patties with two eggs over easy and home fries, a side of bacon, a blueberry pancakes, a regular pancake, fresh squeezed lemonade, fresh squeezed apple juice, and coffee with the only option of whole milk in it. read more
