Matthew's NEVER disappoints. It's one of our favorite places to bring out-of-town guests. It's a no-frills, quirky casual atmosphere that I love! And you absolutely can't beat the prices for the amount of yummy food that you get. You can easily split 1 big pie for two people, we like to get 2 pies anyway when it's just my husband and I so we have leftovers! Always always always order the Crab Pie! In short, not worth it. The crust is oily and the toppings are sub par. I got the large pizza with meatballs, spinach and mushrooms. Mushrooms were canned, spinach seemed old, and the meatballs were sliced rather than diced so they came out dry. The pizza was slightly burned on top as well. I also got a house salad, which was a decent size and the house dressing was ok. However, once again cheap ingredients. I called in my order and the woman on the other end was rude, however it could have been because the restaurant was slammed I found out when I got there. However, is that a justifiable reason for being rude? Your call. I will not go back. I live in the area and have found a better pizza for the same price at Isabella's in Little Italy. I like this pizza. I really do. and it's a good place for out of towners to get a taste of something unique and truly "baltimore." I like supporting family owned places that have been around a while that do things the way they've always done etc etc. It seems kind of expensive, and it kind of is, but the pizza is really filling. We've got hefty appeties and a large (their large looks like the size of a large dinner plate--the whole pizza i mean) is enough for two. or two meals if we get our own. I like the white pizza a lot, a whole lot. and also the regular? the one with just sauce and parmesan cheese-- i usually get that with added garlc and it's really, really good. and the normal pies, with mozzerella and cohorts is great too. It's high on burnt cheese quotient, which is a big sell for me. The sauce is very very tasty and i love the chewy, slightly deep dish crust. It's hearty and rib sticking. It feels like "food" not just "a slice." Cons: it's a pain in the ass to park there and the servers could totally care less if you come, stay, go or come again. and it takes a looong time. Had no idea this was a Thrillist recommendation until a friend told me to try the pizza here. Thankfully I got the chance to eat here before I headed out of Baltimore for good! Here's my quick recommendation for their infamous Crab Pie: 10" Crab Pie PROS -not overly flavored: there is Old Bay seasoning (as there is in all things Baltimore and Chesapeak-ean) but it does not overwhelm the pizza -house sauce is different, not super tangy like most tomato sauce is like but not too sweet either. -crust was amazing: nice and buttery, good crispy and not too thick -cheese was great but wish they had used more fresh mozzarella. After the pizza cools just slightly, the cheese starts to get chewy instead of staying "melty" CONS -not enough lump crab. You definitely get the flavor, but for $14 a pop, I was hoping for more crab. Definitely wish I could come back here to try the other pies. I really love Matthew's "Popular" pizza with pepperoni! Their spaghetti and meatballs are also really good for an amazing price! I really love when you can get a lot of bang for your buck and at Matthews you can stay on budget while eating some of my favorite pizza in the U.S.! Matthews pizza is not your average pizza as it does have quite a thick crust with a lot of cheese and I would say an average amount of sauce so if that isn't your thing then this might not be your place but my life motto is the more bread the better hence why I love this place! read more

Pizza? Yes, please! Full disclosure: I've only gotten delivery but it's great. I recommend Anna's pizza: it's unique and very filling. I think it took me 3 meals to eat a small so as a bonus you really get your money's worth. I don't really know how to describe it, kinda a double decker sort of pizza. :insert reflective deep sigh here:: This place deserves 5000 stars. I am seriously trying to compose a cohesive sentence to convey how wonderful this experience was. This pizza was...everything. No parmesan cheese, no crushed peppers or oregano needed. It. Was. Bomb. We knew upon coming to Baltimore that we'd go here and we were not disappointed AT ALL. The atmosphere gives you that old school pizza joint feel. It was intimate and we did not feel rushed. We ordered garlic bread and Shelby suggested adding cheese on top with a side of marinara which was an awesome suggestion. We also had crab pizza and my hubster had some sort of spicy shrimp pizza. So good! In addition, I was literally floored by the level of customer service here. Shelby and the other women in the restaurant give Chick-Fil-A and Disney employees a serious run. My drink was never empty and they were beyond friendly. We even hugged upon leaving. We will definitely be back whenever we are in the Baltimore area! read more

This pizza is unlike any I have tasted. I have traversed this country near and far tasting pizza. I judge any many variables, taste being the most important. That being said, this place gets 4 stars mainly NOT becuase of the actual product- but rather the atmosphere and accompanying factors. first off- we walk in and reach our first challange- up the stairs or down- which road do we choose- well i have always been a bit of a downstairs kid (no sexual pun intended) so i went down there (intended). The downstairs bar was AWESOME. It literally brough awe upon me- which is rare. I have never seen this type of bar/pizza set up- really good idea and I really like it.- unfortunetly no room for us to sit- so up stairs we go. Staff was excited that I was visitng from NY. They were interested in my pizza feedback. The exterior was my favorite part. Reminiscent of a NY style Pizza spot- very rare in areas south of Jersey to have such old signage. Another rule of mine is when visiting a pizza spot first- judge by a regular/chesse/plain pie (depending on the local term). Toppings present too many lurking variables which may sway the eater. I had a regular (pan style) crust, and a thin crust. The TASTE was really strong. I can tell the style here is well appreciated among the locals. Im not the biggest fan of the style- but I came here to try old fasioned Baltimore pizza ?? i think thats what its called. bottom line- NY people will definetly be dissapointed, but others will probably love this place. read more

It has been a few years since I first went to Matthew's and after trying their pizza a couple more times I'm bumping them up to five stars. I finally tried their crab pizza and it really is as good as the hype. For the price I expected a few small pieces of crab but I was wrong about that and they were very generous with it. Another nice thing about the pizza here is that it stays tasty for quite a while if you're getting take out. Some pizza becomes mediocre after just a few minutes of sitting in the car but whatever Matthew's does makes their pizza very take out friendly. My only real gripe is that the service isn't the friendliest. It's not enough to make them lose a star, and since I was picking up pizza to bring home it didn't matter all that much. read more

I've had pizza from Barcelona, New York City, Chicago, San Francisco, and Seattle. There's something special, unique and truly delicious about Matthew's pizza that I haven't found anywhere else. My advice is to first try the Traditional Tomato Pie. There's only one cheese, Reggianito, the perfect amount of housemade sauce and some of the best crust you'll ever taste. It comes out piping hot, is dirt cheap and the service is better than most Michelin rated restaurants. It's not fancy, but it's clean and friendly. What's not to love about a place that serves up real authentic style pizza and dishes? I mean, I personally go for the pizza which is why the place is essentially called Matthew's Pizza. If the place's name has pizza in it... you MUST try the pizza! I usually opt for the three cheese pizza pie or the crab pie. If you're concerned about it being too cheesy... its not. If you're concerned that they just plop a heap of crab dip on top of pizza dough and bake it.. they don't. There is a good balance between cheese, crab, dough and sauce. I've also heard the cannolis are good, but I'm pretty sure they order out for their desserts from Vaccaro's. Correct me if I'm wrong though. So take a night out on the town, go for a stroll in Patterson Park and then stop off for some nommy pizza which is located across from the Patterson Theater. The view is historically breathtaking at night with the theater lights in action sweeping across the street and park! Matthew's has the makings to be a perfect date spot.. just saying :) read more

Oh my god, I would kill someone for their crab pie. I'm not a fan of thick crust pizzas at all, but Matthews breaks the rules for me. Their pizzas are hands down the best you can get in Baltimore. Their crab pie is a white pizza, piled with crab meat and onions and sprinkled lightly with Old Bay. Great flavor. I also make sure to get their house salad when I go. The house dressing makes this salad. It's big enough to share, so two of us can walk out of there stuffed with just one salad and one large pie. The atmosphere is stripped down, the staff is friendly but very, very busy, so don't be offended if there's no small talk. Matthews makes me actually miss living in Highlandtown. read more

Service: We came in around 7:30 on a Saturday night and was seated right away. It was very busy with all the tables being full and about 4 people waiting by the counter for take out. There were about two waitresses taking care of customers at the 10 or so tables and two people behind the counter taking care of take out and the phones. Once we were seated we were given menus and after about 5 minutes a server came to take our order for food and brought us water. Plates, silverware and napkins were placed on our table but we had to set it for ourselves. Our pizza came out first after 10 minutes since we had called in to order for a pick up but then decided after all to eat in and our order of fries came out 5 minutes after that. Both servers came a few times to ask us how everything was and was very attentive and friendly. One of the servers also came out to wish us a good night as she cleared our table as we left. Food: We ordered their famous crab pizza and a side of baked french fries. The pizza was very tasty with a nice doughy chewy texture and buttery taste. The crab pizza had great decent sized chunks of crab, tomato sauce, diced onions, and old bay on top. The old bay wasn't too overpowering which was perfect and added just the right amount of flavor. It's Maryland after all and a nice crab dish can't go without some old bay seasoning. The crab was delicious and if you're in the mood for crab without the cracking and hammers then this is definitely for you. The crab pie was cut up in 6 slices and was just the right amount of food for the two of us. The baked french fries weren't great and we probably wouldn't recommend it. They weren't especially flavorful and were somewhat soggy and lukewarm when they came out. Ambiance: The restaurant had a great atmosphere and vibe. It was filled with all kinds of decorations like Italian flags, maps of Italy, and interesting looking hanging light fixtures. The bathroom doors were labeled in big colorful letters for gentlemen and ladies. One entire wall of the restaurant was laden with the various awards the restaurant has earned over the years from Zagat, Thrillist, and a ton of other places. There was a top floor where we ate and a bottom floor which we saw briefly but didn't get to check out. The only downside is that because it's so popular and somewhat small inside it can get pretty hectic. Our table was right next to the counter and we had people crowded around us for the first half of our dinner. Before our food came out we also had two people who were waiting for their food sitting with us at our table. Overall: It was a great visit and we were happy to try it after having it on our list for so long. When I'm looking for Pizza late at night, my rules on qualities aren't as stringent: 1) Be Open 2) Cheap 3) Quick. When it is normal day/evening hours, my tastes and recommendations drastically change. Of course, price will always remain one rule, but I also like to add in less greasiness, freshness of ingredients, and quality of bread. At the top of my list qualifying for this is Matthew's Pizza. Starting with friendly greetings every time I have been here by the consistently nice waitstaff, I am most comfortable picking out my table and sitting down. And then the greatness starts once you order your pizza. Crunchy, uniquely tasting (with some hints of flavors even liken to bacon in the crust) and a wonderful rich tomato sauce combine to pleasure your mouth. The crust is such the identity to this pizza so I recommend the stuffed pizza which is basically one pizza on top of another. Their garlic bread skimps on no amount of garlic and feel free to ask for mozzarella on top. I did have a little mix-up in the kitchen, but the waitstaff did take our order right and justly compensated us with no words from us. Service absolutely matches the taste. read more

The pizza came out scalding hot and burned all our mouths. I don't mind deep dish, but this just was nothing special. The sauce is very sweet and dominates the pie. I will say, the crust was pretty delicious. I won't be going back because I've had better pizza in several other places in the area. (11/01/2010) I am ashamed to say, I've lived in Baltimore over 2 decades and this was the first time I'd been to Matthew's Pizza. They are perennially held as the Best Pizza in Baltimore by pretty much anyone who eats, and I think they do not exaggerate. This is not one of those new-fangled, crackery, flaky crust pizzas, this is a dumbell-weight, thick, bready crusty in a pan pizza. Love the balance of the thick crust with the equally thick layer of cheese and toppings. I had the "Everything" (tomatoes, mozzarella, pepperoni, onions, mushrooms, green peppers, green stuffed olives, and anchovies, small, 10", $11.95). Wow! The salty toppings really went well with the bready crust, crisped and shiny by the oil used to lube the pan. Doesn't get better than this. read more

Great local pizza joint for hearty, home-style pizza. This is where I go when I want a thicker crust on my pizza with traditional toppings. We picked up our order this past Sunday night so that we could eat at home while watching the Olympics. The restaurant was packed but our pizza was ready when we got there (we called in our order before we left home). I got the cheese pizza w bell peppers and onions. My S/O got the cheese with black olives, mushrooms and spinach. Both pizzas were hearty and satisfying. 2 slices of the large pizza filled me up. I had enough left over for 2 more meals. Not quite deep dish, not really NY style, Matthew's Pizza is definitely unique. Very doughy and cheesy, it's pretty tasty. I often find that I don't want to eat the crust, though, because it gets a sort of burnt cheese taste. I've had great service when I've gone. They were very accommodating of my toddler when he came with us - they brought over dough for him to snack on while we were waiting for the rest of our food. Love this place. It's a cute little hometown type place with good service and great pizza! My husband and I usually get takeout, but we have eaten there at least once and got good service. Our usual order is the house salad and a both cheese pie with sausage and onions. The house salad is a simple and delicious lettuce, tomato, onion type of thing. Nothing fancy, but it's perfect for this type of place. The pizza is unique. Was in Baltimore on a business trip last fall. Talked to a lot of locals and relied on the Yelpers to steer me in the right direction. For pizza I was told 2 places, Iggie's and Matthew's. I stayed in the inner harbor and decided to walk to both for lunch on separate days. Matthew's was good, would have score four stars on the food but the service was slow and the place is small & cramped. In the battle of the pie joints, Iggie's wins. But Matthew's should also receive points being close to Patterson Park. They don't have places like that in Texas. What a jewel. read more

I have never been more disappointed in a pizza before in my life. All these good reviews left me excited.. And then the pizza came out. Let's start with the place, it was crowded, like a school cafeteria. And it took a long time for our pizza to come out. Well, we had called an ordered a large pepperoni and half mushroom pizza. WORTH THE HYPE. We came here on a rainy Sunday after some axe-throwing down the street after someone there had told us they would drive from Philly for this pie. Being a pizza aficionado, I was skeptical, but the pie's here are awesome. I ordered the two cheese pizza, with the signature Parmesan and mozzerella; the pie is almost "deep dish," with a doughy inside and crispy outside with caramelized parm all over the outer crust. The sauce is slightly sweet, which I usually hate, but with the salty-savoriness of the parm and the creamy mozz, it worked! I also got some meatballs which were dense, well-seasoned, and absolutely delicious.
