Charming elephant had been a presence on Boston Street in Canton for many years now and has been consistent and reliable for a great comfort meal. I usually get take out but it's a very cozy spot to eat in, and they have tap to pay capabilities so I will usually pop in after a jog when I don't have my wallet and it's not a problem. FYI, parking is free on Boston Street but depending on the tune of day can fill up. Although the menu items will sound familiar to Thai disagree, keep in mind that this is a Laotian restaurant! The flavors are going to be a bit different. Based on the items I've had, I would say it's less heavy and less of a coconut/sweet base than typical Thai dishes. Try them out for yourself! read more

I visited The Charming Elephant during Baltimore Restaurant Week. It has been on my for a long time and it is very local to me. Their restaurant week special is only $35, but I can tell by these portions that it is worth a trip anytime. The appetizers were almost a meal by themselves. Pay attention when you are asked if you want mild, medium, or spicy. This green curry short rib at mild was perfect for me. I could have done medium with the Tom Khem but it was still good. Their cocktails added some of my favorites like Thai tea, to cocktails but I didn't want to stay up all night. They have Happy Hour from 4-7, so I will sample many cocktails in the future. They also have Vietnamese coffee but now I'm just babbling about my personal preference. So I will leave it at check it out. I did have an espresso martini and my friend had a lychee martini. We didn't make reservations and it was kind of full. We asked if we could sit at the bar. I don't think people usually sit there but we had a great time. It is a small place with a small staff so it felt like everyone waited on us. Everyone was so friendly. The food also came out very fast. They did want to make sure you had finished your main meal before they gave you dessert. The place has some booths, tables and high tops and is very casual. They also do a brisk carry-out business. I think this place is better at night. I went for lunch recently as I saw they offered lunch specials. I ordered their Khao Piek and it needed a lot of doctoring. I asked for limes and hot sauce. Then I got the bill and they charged me for the full amount instead of the discounted rate. I was too tired to argue and the staff wasn't anywhere to be seen. It was really empty when I went and the last time I went in person it was also quite empty. It's a large restaurant with a bar and main dining area. They've gotten rid of the crab fried rice from the menu, which was one of the best things on it. They still list a happy hour from 4 to 7 but I'm not sure that they will honor it. For the price, you're better off going somewhere else. I thought it used to be quite affordable but it was very expensive when I went mainly because I had expectations I would get changed lunch prices. The restaurant can be easy to miss. There's no clear signage but it's located right on Boston across from NiHao. Totally different cuisines but NiHao is just better. Fried rice was another winner. We got it with chicken and it was delicious. Next winner was the pork belly in brown sauce with green beans. I came here for restaurant week with my friends after hearing such great things about this place, and I was not disappointed in the slightest. The food was PHENOMENAL, easily making this restaurant one of my favorites in Baltimore. I tried some seafood options, and I loved that I was able to pick the spice level of the curry. Even more delightful was that the waitress brought over chili oil for the table in case we wanted additional spice. The food itself was very filling, and I honestly would have been satisfied with just the Tom Kai appetizer as a whole meal if the Crab Curry hadn't been absolutely amazing. The restaurant itself is set up like a typical Asian restaurant, but the painted elephants along the wall add a cute charm to the otherwise all-wood interior. Okay so I was actually really blown away by the food here! A group of us dined in on a rainy Tuesday and were basically the only people there. We made a reso but it wasn't needed. Maybe people mostly order takeout here? I highly recommend the passion fruit yogurt crush! I got it without alcohol and it was so refreshing. Perfect combo of tangy and sweet and I couldn't stop eating the passion fruit boba at the bottom! Yum. We started with the garden wraps, egg rolls, and fried chicken. The wraps were fresh and came with a yummy peanut sauce. Egg rolls and chicken were both perfectly fried and delicious! For dinner we shared the crab fried rice, shrimp pad see ew, laap with fish, and the shrimp salmon salad. My favorite dish by far was the pad see ew!! The noodle texture and sauce were perfect and had a nice kick to it. The crab fried rice was also really good and was seasoned with black pepper that made it stand out from others I've had in the past. The laap dish had good flavor but maybe a bit too fishy for me. I didn't actually eat the shrimp salmon salad as I can't eat uncooked seafood at the moment but it didn't seem to be the crowd favorite. For dessert we had the mango sticky rice and street bananas with coconut ice cream. Both were excellent but the sticky rice really stood out to me. It was warm and the mango was perfectly ripe! We came hungry and ordered four dishes: garden wraps, fried calamari, pork belly banh mi, and drunken noodles. Of these, the garden wraps were the decided favorite. This dish (which is often called summer rolls) can be rather insipid with mostly limp vegetables as filling, but here they were bursting with crab and shrimp as well. I also enjoyed the dipping sauce which was unusual and had a nice kick to it. Since my partner does not enjoy spice, we asked for an alternative and were provided with the more familiar orange sauce that usually accompanies summer rolls - something for everyone! The pork belly bahn mi was a close second. I really enjoyed the first few bites, but after I encountered some gristle I was a turned off and the whole thing became a bit cloying. But before that turn of events, I was thinking it was one of the better bahn mi sandwiches I have had, so perhaps it was just an unfortunate one-off. The other two dishes were nothing special. For drinks, they were out of boba (although the pictures of the boba drinks were enticing), so I got a Duckpin Maryland Pale Ale. Excellent beer! On atmosphere - it is a cute and comfy place, but during the time we were there, between 6-7pm, there no other diners in the restaurant, which was a bit strange. Immediately coming into this weathered, but tried and true eatery, I was entranced by the night-life themed Laotian decor. I wondered to myself if I had indeed, bought an airplane ticket to Laos itself. But that disillusionment was quickly waved away by a speedy seating in the calm and alluring restaurant. I looked through their menu with gusto, keeping my salivary glands at bay - with variable success. I ultimately ended up ordering the Tom Khem, fried meatballs, and drunken noodles. While engaging in knuckle-dead scholarly conversation and entertaining higher order propositions, our food arrived. To describe the first morsel that hit my tongue is to describe what it means to be alive - but I'll give it a shot. The Tom Khem tasted like the first few seconds of warm sunshine after persisting a frigid winter. It was Laotian comfort food in its essence. The braised pork belly soaked my soul with its inviting and addictive flavor of savoriness and umami. It was clear to me that this was a dish thoughtfully made and intentionally portioned to keep you satisfied but wanting more. The braise, poured over rice, pushed the envelope more - highlighting the effort and intricacies of the braising itself. The braise was sweet and savory, complimenting the pork belly and encouraging the inquisitive to embellish the dish with rice. Finally, the boiled egg, albeit simple as it was, was as delicious as it could be. Grounding the dish's roots to what a comfort food should be. I could really speak to how the drunken noodles and fried meatballs were of similar caliber to the Tom Khem, but I truly wish to encourage all Baltimore residents and visitors to give this place a shot. A cute restaurant right by the water in Baltimore! The highlight of the menu by far for me was the drinks. They have many unique drinks, both alcoholic and nonalcoholic, that I'd want to come back to try. I had the lychee mojito, which tasted fresh, sweet, and perfectly minty, and my boyfriend got the lychee martini, which was stronger and yummy as well. I ordered the drunken noodles with chicken, and found it to be okay--I ordered it spicy but it definitely needed some doctoring (I'd maybe order it at the Lao spicy level next time). We got crab rangoons for the table and also a tom yum soup, which were the two food highlights for me. The rangoons were crispy with a creamy, savory filling, and the tom yum was the perfect blend of spicy and sour. The Lao fried chicken was crispy and moist, with a tangy seasoning on top. I would definitely order the chicken, rangoons, and soup again, but would maybe order something else instead of the drunken noodles. It took some time for the food to come out and for us to get our check at the end, but it did seem like there was only one person waiting all the tables. I also personally found some items on the menu to be a little pricey, so this likely won't become a staple restaurant in my rotation. I've long heard great things about Charming Elephant and have been dying to give it a try. I ordered the chicken pad thai (medium spicy level), the papaya salad (mild), and the sticky rice and mango for dessert. Everything was packaged up really nicely for my to-go order. I liked how the peanuts for the pad thai were put on the side so they didn't get soggy in the container. The papaya salad was good but not my favorite. I do wish it were a little more spicy and less fishy tasting. The pad thai had a great flavor and was definitely pretty spicy. I wish it had more veggies mixed in but the flavor was good enough where that didn't bother me much. The mango and sticky rice was super yummy. The mango was soft and juicy and the perfect amount of sweetness. I'd love to come back to try more from the menu including some of the explicitly gluten free options listed. I was so happy to have found this place! I loved the laap gai with sticky rice; I would get that again. The medium spice is an average level of spice. I went on a weekday during the day and was surprised we were the only patrons there. There was plenty of varied seating, like booths, tables, and a bar area. I would recommend coming here to all of my friends as a casual spot or weeknight date in the Baltimore Fells Point/Canton area. I first came to Charming Elephant on a HOT summer day after wanting to try it for weeks. I came in for happy hour and was amazed at the wide variety of drinks they offered, as well as comforting food items. I've been struggling to find places with flavors I've craved since moving here, but Charming Elephant mostly satisfied that urge. Their drinks are amazing. I've ordered a few margaritas here and have loved each one. My favorite is the pandan margarita! Honestly, this is probably my favorite drink spot in Baltimore. The food is okay. I have noticed that the prices are rising and I personally feel that the portions have been on the smaller side. Taste-wise, things are good. I've taken some of my friends and they seem to like it. One of them loves the fried chicken here, and the other would suggest to not order the pho. When I've had dishes with their crispy pork belly, the outer layer felt more stale rather than crispy. However, they do give a good amount of meat relative to everything else on the dish. I really like their fried pork belly pad kapow. Garden wraps are one of my favorite things to order anywhere, and they're pretty good here! Service is good most days! They are usually quite friendly and will check up on us often. Food does come out a little slow, but that's fine. There is also plenty of seating available, and the decoration is beautiful. I sat by a large flower wall the first time and it was gorgeous! I finally was able to dine in for the first time! I've been a fan of their food for forever, but I've only ever had them for takeout. The decor on the inside is super cute, and the space was a lot bigger than I expected. They even have a bar and offer mixed drinks that I need to try next time! We arrived basically right when they opened, so we were the only people in there and our service was super fast. I was really surprised by how quickly our food came out once we ordered. I ordered the butterfly pea tea mostly because I knew it was going to be so pretty, but I was impressed with how yummy it was too! It honestly just tasted like a lemonade to me, but a little different - I'm just not sure in what way. The drunken noodles were also super delicious. You can choose what protein you would like added (if any) and your spice level. I went with medium spice, and it was honestly really mellow and not too spicy at all. The noodles were nice and chewy and all the veggies were well-cooked. It's also a pretty big portion - I only ate about half and was comfortably full. My dad went with me on this trip, and he ordered the pad thai with shrimp and a Thai tea. I had a bite/sip of both, and the taste I had of each was great! My dad was also really pleased. Everything we've tried on their menu is truly delicious. We also ordered the pho and garden wraps to-go, and enjoyed both of those as well. I'm excited to try more of the menu. Tried my first Lao restaurant and it did not disappoint! I came here for their happy hour which is everyday from 4-7pm they're open. It's a pretty spacious restaurant with a small bar. I was the only customer upon arrival and the bartender/server greeted me and sat me at a high top. To start, I ordered their Lychee Mojito and through the Yelp check-in, I also got a free Thai iced tea. The Thai iced tea was perfectly sweet and delicious. The lychee mojito was ok. It was quite bitter and I couldn't taste any of the couple pieces of basil in there. A minor dislike for me. Onto the food I ordered. I got their Egg Rolls, Lao-Styled Mussels and Pad See Ew with chicken. The mussels were cooked perfectly and the sauce was very flavorful. Egg rolls were crispy as they should be and Pad See Ew was great. No complaints with the food at all and everything was so good! The server, Tanya, seemed to be the only one working there. She was quiet but sweet and friendly taking my order and checking in on me a couple times. By the time I got my check and was getting ready to leave (around 6:10pm) only one other couple had just come in to dine. Not a busy restaurant it seems so I hope they stay in business. Came back to Charming Elephant on a Saturday afternoon to order the Laap Larb Gai (Chicken) ($13.50), Pork drunken noodles ($15.25) and two drinks: Pink Lotus ($10) and O-Liang Ice Coffee ($4.25). The Larb Gai is my favorite dish by far so I order it every time and that too, I make sure to get it Laotian spicy. This time I do feel like it lacked some acidity so I asked for some extra lime wedges. I was charged an additional $1.50 for the lime wedges, which I thought was unfair so the server offered to remove it from my bill. The Pork drunken noodles was very flavorful, however, the pork was a bit on the drier end. I also do wish we had a bigger portion after all it was $15.25. To drink, we got the O-Liang Ice Coffee and Pink Lotus, which were both delicious! The ice coffee is was sweet, rich, and creamy. The pink lotus cocktail was perfectly fizzy with citrusy notes from the lime juice. Definitely a must try! I will definitely be coming back yet again. I had dinner with some friends at Charming Elephant last week, and I enjoyed our meal! Charming Elephant is a Lao restaurant. Since Laos borders Thailand, China, Vietnam, and Cambodia, you'll see some dishes common in those countries as well. We shared their garden wraps, fried chicken appetizer, Goi Pa (Laap fish), Pad See Ew with shrimp, crab fried rice, Thum Shrimp Salmon, mango sticky rice, and street fried bananas. Of these, I'd say the highlights were the fried chicken, Goi Pa, and Pad See Ew! Charming Elephant makes a fish house in-house, and it's got some real fish sauce funk. A few of our party weren't super fond of the Thum Shrimp Salmon since the fish sauce flavor was strong and the salmon was either cured or raw (the menu didn't specify this, but I think it was probably cured?). Overall, I'd say that the menu covers a lot of bases! If someone in your party wants something familiar to them, that they've seen on a lot of Lao or Thai restaurant menus, Charming Elephant has you covered. If you want something a bitter harder to find, something specifically Thai, something spicy, something with seafood, Charming Elephant has you covered, too. We also enjoyed their drink offerings. They offer a few Asian beers, soju, great cocktails, and some great non-alcoholic options (2 of the party of 5 weren't drinking when we visited). One of us had a Lao Charming Margarita (butterfly pea tea), which she loved. Several of us had the yogurt crush (two made non-alcoholic). Next time, I'm not adding any flavoring to my yogurt crush, because the flavorings were a little sweet and I wanted the tang of just the carbonated yogurt that they spike! The service was good, friendly - we're a loud, difficult bunch (we talk too much and forget to read the menu and we're never ready to order quickly) - but our server was great. The restaurant is casual and comfortable. Parking wasn't as bad as I had thought it would be (we did eat at 5:30 on a weekday though). They were very sweet. Lovely place and great service. Flavor wise I don't think it was flavorful enough for my palette. I gave it four stars for the wonderful service. The food wasn't bad it just needed more spices to meet what I like. I had the pad see ew and it was ok. I cleaned my dish I was starving but it was missing the msg in accustomed too. I had the spring rolls or wrap. It was also ok. The dipping sauce was just hoisin sauce but Missing some peanut butter. It was just plain hoisin sauce for dipping. Again I think I'm just used to what I have had. That being said, Their peach margarita was delicious though!! read more
