I agree with my friend Andrew in that this place doesn't really need a review. However, I have eaten here twice in the past two weeks, so I thought I'd jot down a couple of comments. Overall, I've eaten at this Matchbox more than I'd probably like to admit.
This review is a combination of two visits which were different. One was dinner for two on a Tuesday night around 8 p.m., last minute. The other was a group of 6, with reservation, where I showed up about a half hour late.
The dinner for two visit had me ordering my standard: half Matchbox meat and half spicy meatball. AMAZING as always. I contend that they do not put enough meat balls on a "small" meatball pizza which translates into the half-and-half, as well. And, on the Matchbox meat, why no meat balls? So it goes. Great service, and we waited the length of one drink, which is acceptable considering every table was full and the our of our arrival. And, I know this is unique, but we were each served a donut complimentary which is ultimately fried pizza dough sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar, but still very tasty. Oh, and don't forget the chocolate syrup drizzled on top. YUM! But, one is enough.
The group outing was interesting only because I showed up late. A lady brought drinks for others at the table and when me and my friend who arrived together asked her if we could order drinks, she seemed surprised. At this point in the night, we didn't know if she was our waitress, etc., so we just asked. Her confusion and surprise was a bit odd, I'd say.
Otherwise, at the table already was a slider with bleu cheese waiting for me and my late friend as well as a prosciutto wrapped apple wedge with caramel dipping sauce. The slider was super tasty, which Matchbox is known for, but the apple prosciutto was unmemorable.
For pizza, the 6 of us shared 3 larges: Fire and smoke, sausage/sun-dried tomato with balsamic reduction and prosciutto white with spinach. They were all delicious. The fire and smoke was my favorite. The spice caught me by surprise, I love spice but not to the degree that it detracts from flavor. This pizza's spiciness did not detract from flavor. Once I got over the initial surprise, I loved it. The sausage sundried tomato is just too darn sweet. I've had it before and felt the exact same. The tomato and the balsamic are a one-two sweet punch that even yummy sausage can't salvace. The prosciutto white with spinach was good. Blah. Good. Nothing to write home about. The taste is flat. Love the charred crust on all of them, though.
Beyond that, good drinks, great beers, fun wines. This will continue to be one of my favorites. I love the pizza, but love 7th Hill more (see that review).
Closing thought: They list their martinis as Girlie or Manly, which is lame, I know. But, my friend ordered one off the Manly menu which has a sugared rim. I call B.S.! Any martini with a sugared rim, when being forced into a Girlie or Manly category must be Girlie. read more
