Matchbox mimosa
Rachelle S.

Dropped in during brunch and sat at the bar. They offer bottomless brunch that includes a breakfast bar on the weekends that everyone enjoys. The music was really loud so it was hard for the bartender to hear me. He was kind but super busy, but made sure to check on me. Where I sat at the bar I was able to interact with a lot of the servers and a manager. They were all kind. I started with a matchbox mimosa and it was heavy on the sweet side. I opted out of the bottomless brunch and decided to get the tres leche pancakes with chicken sausage and crispy house potatoes. The pancakes were okay. The bananas were the best part. Mixing the syrup and the tres leches cream? So good. The chicken sausage and potatoes are a pretty large side portions. The sausage was good but I found that the potatoes weren't crispy and lacked flavor. I might give this location another shot.

Chicken + Waffles

I came to Matchbox for a pre-matinee brunch on a chilly Sunday. We had reservations at noon, but they were very unnecessary as we were some of the only people in the restaurant. However, there were many more patrons by the time we left (around 1:30pm) so if you're on a schedule, a reservation isn't a bad idea. We ordered cocktails that were fine, but nothing exceptional -- certainly not the best espresso martini I've ever had, but it was drinkable and not overly expensive. We got buttermilk biscuits for a starter that were really tasty, but heavy and they arrived at almost the same time as our main dishes. The entrees were a good size and came out hot, correct, and fast. I had the chicken and waffles which consisted of one full Belgian waffle and three medium sized chicken tenders. My friend got the seasonal waffles with fruit and she liked it well enough. Service was quick and friendly. I will say, during colder weather, it may help to ask for a booth/table away from the door. Every time it opened we were treated to gusts of cold wind. Otherwise the dining area was clean and bright and the booths were comfortable. This is a convenient location for theaters and museums -- close to the Gallery Place-Chinatown Metro station, but not close enough to the hotels to get flooded. Prices were very comfortable for a downtown meal.

14" Matchbox Meat Pizza

I stopped by Matchbox on Capitol Hill and had such a great experience! The pizza was absolutely delicious -- perfectly crisp crust, fresh toppings, and that great wood-fired flavor that makes every bite memorable. You can really taste the quality in their ingredients. The cocktails were just as impressive -- well-crafted, balanced, and served with care. Whether you're into something classic or want to try one of their signature drinks, you can't go wrong. The atmosphere was lively but comfortable, and the staff made me feel right at home. It's the perfect spot for a casual dinner, date night, or drinks with friends. Can't wait to go back!

The Matchbox at Eastern Market, DC (Capitol Hill) Recently, I was walking around DC with my mom when lunchtime hunger hit us. After reviewing a few nearby options, we landed on Matchbox, largely because my mom had a craving for chicken and waffles. Unfortunately, that dish didn't make it onto the newly released menu. So, she pivoted to the fried chicken meal, which came with green beans and mashed potatoes. I, on the other hand, couldn't decide. There were too many tempting options left me paralyzed. In a moment of indecision, I hastily ordered the mumbo wings, a cup of cream of crab soup, and a guava lemonade. The décor was warm, well-laid-out, and inviting, so I was surprised by how quiet it was during prime lunch hours. When the food arrived, I instantly felt plate envy. My mom's fried chicken looked golden, crisp, and plentiful, with sides that appeared equally appetizing. My mumbo wings, however, were smaller and less flavorful than I hoped. Fortunately, the cream of crab soup was excellent, rich, creamy, and satisfying, and the guava lemonade was refreshingly good. One critique: given how light the crowd was, I expected a bit more attentiveness from the staff. While our food came out quickly, check-ins were scarce and service felt a bit detached. Recommendation level- mixed: * Food: Mixed -- some hits, some misses * Décor: High marks -- stylish and comfortable * Service: Could be more attentive Overall, a pleasant atmosphere and decent meal, but a few refinements could make the experience truly shine.

Came back to an old favorite and things have definitely improved! Service has gotten better, and the food is somehow tastier. We've come in for happy hour, dinner and brunch, all of the options were worth the visit!

Shrimp & Grits This was my least favorite but the flavor was all there!

This place was great! I love the atmosphere, service was friendly and professional, and they offered more food than I could eat lol They offer a bottomless brunch where you can eat w.e your heart desire for 2hrs. They also have a bottomless drink option that I took full advantage of! Will visit again next time I'm in town!

I didn't even know this Matchbox was over here but it was a vibe and I'll be back. They even had a DJ playing! I sat the bar before going to a nearby restaurant for dinner. Seems like brunch had just ended. Service was a little slow but I only wanted a drink. I ordered a strawberry lemon drop and it was pretty good.

Went on a Saturday afternoon after running a half marathon IYKYK, we were starving. Had pizza and burgers, which were both amazing. Our server was fantastic. Loved the DJ. Lots of folks were there eating brunch and all of the food we saw looked delicious. I'd also like to note that the manager noticed I was half asleep at the table and brought me a hydration packet and a bottle of water. That was clutch, and reflective of their quality of service. This place is a vibe.

Surprised my friend for her birthday with MatchBox's unlimited brunch special. It was the perfect opportunity to sample some of everything off the menu! Their biscuits are always my go to and I was glad they were included in the brunch special as we ordered 3 batches between the two of us. Our favorites were the sweet chili salmon pizza for the novelty, shrimp and grits for its creaminess, and blueberry lemon pancakes for their sweetness. The caesar salad was nice and the side of catfish was the right portion size. All the food was worth the brunch price. And the service of the waitress was excellent. She was attentive to our needs and checked on our table frequently. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because the lighting at our table was awful. It effected the quality of our photos, bur an overall wonderful experience. I can see myself going back once a quarter for their brunches.

We were in the mood for hamburgers, so we came here. They were everything we'd been hoping for! My husband asked for onion straws instead of fries, & the waitress was accommodating.

About a 1-1.5: We had ordered here for a work lunch, and while navigating the online system was extremely difficult (slow loading, error signs, etc.), we were managed to submit for a pickup. We had ordered: +a couple of the Roasted Salmon entrees - this was supposed to be butternut squash risotto with cremini mushrooms, oven-roasted tomatoes, and shaved Parm; we had requested the goat cheese and arugula on the side, but this came in a small condiment cup in which the arugula and the goat cheese were already mixed together; in addition, the arugula was not fresh, and the goat cheese was hardly in existence +a Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo - with sun-dried tomatoes and cremini mushroom; the chicken itself was overcooked and super chewy; the side of garlic bread was extremely soggy from the heat, as it was not even packed separately, but put inside the container; there was a request for extra alfredo sauce, but the pasta were hardly dressed and dried out Service was friendly at pickup, but there was confusion on the order and it didn't seem to have been ready yet, even though we had arrived during the pickup time quoted. Not a great experience; we'd probably try another eatery the next time around. +greens are not fresh +overcooked proteins +soggy breads +customizations not adhered to

Arancini
Sara G.

From the minute we sat down EVERYTHING was great! We were a group of 6 and our waitstaff, Charles was outstanding at keeping our drinks filled and bellies full! We ordered Arancini- it comes with 3 balls which is fine to cut in half, 4- 10in pizzas (hot honey pepperoni, garlic chicken, shrimp Alfredo, margherita) garlic chicken was the table favorite (shocked us all with how good it was), catfish and grits which was plenty to share with the fish lovers at the table- you would need 2 if everyone in your party loves fish, and all 5 desserts! Listing them in the order we loved them, s'mores, donut holes, apple crisp, chocolate brownie and finally the cheesecake. It was fun to try all of them but the brownie and cheesecake weren't anything special and we could have ordered 2 orders of donut holes and the s'mores and been just as happy. Fun place to go with friends where you spend time talking and grazing thru the meal!

It's a good place to eat, but still is just a bit more yuppified version of Ruby Tuesdays.

Its warm, clean design makes it quite welcoming for enjoying avocado toast with smoked salmon, which brings one to a place of spiritual oneness. With white walls, natural wood-grain tables and countertops, Toastique's design radiates minimalist, urban style while remaining inviting. Any time I have been there, the wait times have been stress-free, and the queues move quickly. Food-wise, you can't go wrong with their avocado toast with smoked salmon. With a generous portion of smoked salmon on top of avocado mash, on perfectly toasted sourdough bread, creating a place of tremendous well-being. The cucumbers, marinated tomatoes, red onion, capers, and a sprinkle of microgreens make for a fully satisfying meal without feeling like you are overdoing it with your life choices. Drink-wise, I always go for cold brew and the cold brew never lets me down there. Last time, they had a peanut-butter cold brew and a black cherry one, both of which were magical. This Toastique delivers every time.

We hoped to find a place that offered decaf coffee since it was late in the day, but really wanted something warm since it was a bit chilly outside. Unfortunately, this location of Toastique does not offer decaf - they only have a single hopper for their coffee, so it is not an offering. We were going to find another place, however, they said how about a hot chocolate or a tea. My friend is vegan and inquired if their hot cocoa was vegan, as most places have dairy in the chocolate. The cashier went to look at the chocolate syrup and also had another person look at it to verify it's vegan. My friend ordered a hot chocolate with oat milk. Even though it was busy, we only waited about 5 minutes for her drink. We appreciated the effort to double check it was vegan, though I do wish they had decaf options.

We split the DL's Egg Drop (the bulgogi breakfast sandwich) and the Hatch Green Chili sandwich. Both were well executed. The bulgogi brought some real depth to what could have easily been a gimmick, and the hatch green chili edged it out for me personally. The heat was there without being obnoxious, and everything held together the way a good sandwich should. Friends went with the shrimp and grits and had nothing but good things to say. The team behind this place (Scott Drewno and Danny Lee, also of Anju and ChiKo) knows what they're doing, and it shows. The sourcing is thoughtful, the execution is consistent, and the menu has enough going on to warrant repeat visits without feeling like it's trying too hard. Would come back, and would tell others to do the same.

I Egg You is a great little breakfast spot tucked into the Barracks Row neighborhood of Washington,…read moreD.C. I've always enjoyed visiting this area. It's full of interesting shops, great restaurants, and, surprisingly for D.C., relatively easy parking. The food was good. We ordered the bacon and sausage breakfast sandwiches, and both were enjoyable. The sausage sandwich was unnecessarily messy thanks to the crumbled pork, but the flavors were good. Nothing extraordinary, just a satisfying breakfast. I also ordered a Bloody Mary, which I'd rate a 7 out of 10. It had a nice amount of spice and a respectable flavor, but something was missing that would have made it memorable. I'd order it again, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it. The restaurant itself is straightforward and understated. The interior is clean, simple, and without unnecessary frills. It's a comfortable space that lets the food do most of the talking. Unfortunately, the service was the weakest part of the experience. I arrived around 9 a.m. on a Saturday. The restaurant was busy but far from packed, with plenty of available seating. I took a seat at the bar, where the bartender promptly greeted me and handed me a menu. I immediately told him what I wanted to eat and ordered a Bloody Mary. Then I waited. And waited. Nearly ten minutes passed before I saw my drink, despite watching the bartender prepare and serve drinks to customers who had arrived after me. There was no explanation or acknowledgment of the delay. It wasn't a catastrophic service failure, but it was frustrating, particularly given how quickly the interaction started and how manageable the crowd appeared to be. That's ultimately what holds I Egg You back. The food is worth trying, the neighborhood is enjoyable, and the restaurant has a pleasant simplicity about it. But the service, at least during my visit, was noticeably slow and lacked the attentiveness that makes dining out enjoyable. Would I eat here again? Absolutely. Would I choose to dine in again? That's a harder sell. I Egg You makes a good breakfast sandwich. I'm just not convinced the dining experience adds much to it. Next time, I might take the food to go.

I ordered the chimichurri steak plate and really enjoyed it. Funnily enough, the chimichurri itself was the least enjoyable item. I didn't love the texture of it (much too coarse) but, fortunately, it was packaged in a small container separate instead of on the steak itself. The salad probably had a bit too much dressing but I had the option to order that on the side so that's on me. Nonetheless, the steak, potatoes, salad, corn, avocado were all excellent. I also added chips, a lemon zest cookie, and a blueberry breeze handcrafted drink. The cookie is big and chewy, unlike others I have had. It's definitely not something to eat in one sitting. The drink was a little blah and nothing I would order again. All in all, very good!

It was a nice portion with pita bread, but the hummus was kind of "meh." Texture was good but not much flavor. A disappointment. The beverage bar has an interesting variety of self-serve drinks, including unsweetened tea, tea with pineapple, a mango drink and a drink with a kale base. I tried several of them and mixed some together. It was $4. Worth a try. The place was not crowded when we were there and it's comfortable.
