Sunday funday lead us to Matchbox and thankfully so. We opted for outdoor seating to enjoy the weather and street entertainment. We were seated promptly, and greeted by our server. It took a minute to sort through the various options, but our server assured us the crab cake sandwich and brick oven pizzas were the way to go. She was right! The crab cake sandwich was all crab and no filler, perfectly situated on a toasted brioche bun, served with a side of French fries seasoned to perfection. The Fire Smoke pizza was delish! The ingredients were fresh and the cheese was cheesin. Needless to say it was half gone before my phone got a taste Yelpers will be happy to know they offer a $10 off brunch coupon for check-ins. Quick summary: Food - 4 stars Value - 3 stars Atmosphere - 2 stars Service - 2 stars We came here after flying home from Europe, so admittedly we were a bit jet-lagged and tired. So...that's my one caveat to this review. The hostess seemed new but was nice, and she got us seated quickly. We then waited for a bit over 10 minutes for a waiter before I asked the hostess to find her. Which, she did, and was very apologetic. This is despite having had menus and we're all looking up, clearly ready to order. Another three minutes and our waiter came. She was pleasant enough and took our order. My wife had baked chicken (moist and good, nothing spectacular, skimpy sides}, my son a cheese pizza (very basic soft-crust pizza), my daughter a steak (cooked well despite being thin, skimpy sides), and I had the fish and chips (fried with fresh oil, tasty, pretty basic). We were almost done with our meal (eating slowly) before our waiter checked on us. This was despite multiple empty glasses and two of us wanting to order a refill and another beer. Ordered, and the beer came out almost ten minutes later, after we were finished eating. So, food was the saving grace here. It all tasted fine, was hot, and everyone's order arrived at the same time. The value was mixed, only because a rib-eye that clocks in at less than 8 ounces, a half-cup of mashed potatoes and four asparagus spears shouldn't cost almost $40 in a casual restaurant. It was enough for a small, 11-year-old girl. A grownup would need to order appetizers or more food. Atmosphere was that of a typical restaurant. It screamed "this is a place to eat, not sit and socialize". So, if it's designed to push food...the food needs to be fast and good. However, we're parents in our early 50s, so we're not looking for a Dave and Busters/Chuck E. Cheese environment. HOWEVER, the one picture I'm including is one of the long table next to us, which had not been bussed after the last party left, and was quickly becoming the Island of Misfit Dishes. I looked around, and there were several other tables that had the remnants of long-passed diners. The service. Again, we were tired after 13 hours of travel. However, we had already managed our own expectations based on that, so initial contact should be made within five minutes. A greeting would be fine. A drink order would be phenomenal. I watched waiters, bussers, hosts, and I think a manager delivering food. It may have been an efficiency problem (that's on the staff) or a staffing problem (that's on the manager). However, most of the tables in our area, better than 2/3, were empty. If the place had been slammed, I could see all of those times being extended by at least double (20 minutes for initial contact, 30 for drinks, 60 for food). But, it's in a busy shopping area, so maybe overflow from surrounding restaurants can keep it afloat. Finally, upon leaving, there was no hostess at the stand to say thanks for goodbye. Primacy and recency: you remember the first thing you experience, and the last. It starts and ends with the host, or first contact with your waiter. First and last impressions are lasting. Because of this, it reminded me of an upscale military dining facility. Get in, eat your food, leave. Would I go back? No, because it's out of the way, and it was a stop of convenience. If I were in the area? Maybe, but it would be long after my memory of this experience had faded, or another location helped to redeem this visit. Ewww. After seeing their weekend buffet on TikTok and Facebook, we were really looking forward to going. First problem, the menu on their website has not been updated to match the current buffet menu and most of the items we went for were no longer available. Second, we decided to go a la carte and the only item my daughter wanted was the biscuits, the buffet is open until 5 pm but at 2 pm they were out. Third and the reason for one star and why we won't be back, when we unwrapped the utensils from the napkins, mine had food on the fork handle and my daughterknife was covered in food from the tip to the handle on both sides. So not only are they not properly cleaning their silverware, but someone wrapped clearly filthy silverware in napkins and placed them on the table. Unsanitary and disgusting. read more

Excellent food, customer service, and atmosphere. Went for brunch on a Saturday, they did not disappoint. I do have to say, the portions are soooo large. We probably should have ordered one brunch + drinks and one drinks only, then split the food, as we each took home over half our appetizer and main dish. Seriously, the large meatball appetizer is softball+ sized and can easily be its own entree. Very yummy foods: besides the meatball, we enjoyed the artichoke and spinach dip, and the crab cake poached eggs with roasted potatoes. All very, very good. Our server was polite, fast, very familiar with the menu, describing dishes, answering questions, etc. delivery was quick and well timed. Excellent place to eat. As someone who has celiac disease, I find this restaurant to be outstanding! Especially for brunch, but it does get very busy. I love how they changed the menus based on the season. What made it challenging to comprehend is how management was unaware of the excessive heat emanating in the two "boxes" on the second floor, making it difficult to enjoy our dinner. My experience here in this establishment ( mostly talking about the ashburn location) has been horrible, least professional and very petty work place. I have had a lot of managers come and go but the biggest problem I have is that our managers Silvia Hernandez and Vivian Gonzalez have been THE WORST MANAGERS I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE. The bartenders and servers that have worked there longer then I have now hate it and it's because of them, And how they treat us as staff. They have tried to do illegal things behind our backs and once we tell HR (Human Resources ) they would retaliate by making our section smaller or talking us out of BEO's aka private event parties aka taking our money from us. We get payed off tips . We only get payed $2.50 an hour, and they would be rude and petty and Silvia has even admitted that she has been petty to us. When a few of us send in a letter to HR Silvia founds out ( and it's supposed to be confidential) she treated us differently and took hours away from us. ( taking our money ways from us) and said they were "Match box hours " which makes no sense Silvia . Ever since they both came here, all of the employees walk on eggshells and hate their lives here. We just work here because we need the money. Actually everyone would say we were better before they both even came here. They are honestly putting Thomson hospitality down the drain and it's really upsetting. And Mr. Vivian Last time I checked respect is earned and you never got that from me because you came in this restaurant to strong demanding respect and the world doesn't work that way. Matchbox has been a favorite of mine since their days in Chinatown, DC (2009-2020 or so)... This location is very clean, sits right on the corner, plenty of parking, and we always get seated really quickly. The staff is always super friendly and very helpful. The ambiance is great for a date night and even comfortable enough for a family outing with the children. The food seems to get better and better every year. Great options and unique flavors. I am definitely a brunch snob, so I take my brunches v seriously. I saw all of the good rating and thought it was a must to try. The service was good, fairly quick and the restaurant has a nice barn like feeling with a fireplace in the back, which I liked. On the other hand.. I wasnt v impressed w/ the food overall. It was underwhelming. We ordered the crab cake Benedict, all American breakfast, buffalo wings and meatball... nothing that I would really rant & rave about. There were some good selections (the meatball and French toast), but everything else was just OK. If you're in the area and not sure where to eat, go here. And I'm done with matchbox. I decided to try again today as it was near where I needed to be for an event, and I was in the mood for brunch. After taking way too long to find a parking space, I went to the restaurant. And the hostess says "do you know that we're only doing brunch today, and it's all you can eat for $45."!! Well, I'm by myself and had no intention of eating a lot or pay $45 + tip for a meal. So I left very disappointed, especially since I had to be somewhere else in an hour. A couple of us came here for a last minute snack after an evening of drinking... We got a large pizza and their wings. The winds were fat and tasty! The pizza was just OK, nothing special. It didn't have the char, nor "fire" flavor I'm used to from Matchbox. Service was rushed and on the bad side as the bartender was too worried about closing down and other guests than he was about taking care of us. The restaurant is pretty big... I wonder how busy/packed they get anymore. The menu is great and they used to be amazing, but ever since expanding so rapidly about 8 years ago, they couldn't manage service properly and they lost lots of business, including mine as I haven't been to a Matchbox in about 5 years. I've had them before and knew to expect spicy deliciousness. I shudder! ... not today. They were awful. Wouldn't touch the 2nd set because the first tasted like vinegar. Gives me shivers still thinking abt it. Proportions of sauces was WAY WAY off. Get that cook a recipe to follow! If that was my first time the restaurant would never see me again. All their pies are super light yet crispy. Each is packed with flavor and I highly recommend trying any one of their specialty pies. We ordered the Fire + Smoke, Garden Veggie, and one create your own. The Fire + Smoke was my favorite of them all made up of a chipotle purée, roasted garlic, onions, red peppers, smoked gouda, basil, and a zesty tomato sauce. The pie was cooked till well done with a light char. The Garden Veggies was a close second made up of a zesty tomato sauce, mozzarella, a medley of roasted veggies, herbs, and cilantro jalapeño oil. The food is on the pricier side, ESPECIALLY for pizza. So that's just one thing to keep in mind! read more

It's been a few years since I have been here and I was surprised how lacking they are of patronage. Granted there are many new restaurants at One Loudoun now but Matchbox is still a nice place to hang out with friends and family dinners. I came looking for the crab and avocado and it wasn't on the menu. The chef Mario came out to explain to me that they no longer carry it due to supply issues. I thought that was really nice of him. I had made reservations two months in advance for the One Loudoun location in March 2025, to host a party of 14 on Friday, May 16, 2025. Nick the manager took my reservation. I was very impressed that making reservations two months in advance was not only possible but also was remarkably carried through. Nick made sure that are table was set up in the upstairs loft. Milexa, was our waitress. She was extremely accommodating and attentive. The food and drinks were excellent. I had a few people in my party with bad legs and or knees. The only reason I'm here today is because my carry out order last night did not have the extra items I asked and paid for and the manager on the phone offered to replace that dish free of charge.
