We came here after visiting the Udvar-Hazy museum on an early weekday afternoon, well after any lunchtime crowds would have dispersed. This is a pretty standard American restaurant, with a choices ranging from dinner salads, sandwiches, entrees such as fish and chips and ribs, and brick oven pizzas. Our meal got off to an inauspicious start when our waitress (a lovely person, really) spilled water on my friend. No big deal and frankly my friend probably could have used a bath anyway. After that bit of excitement we got down to the business of making our selections. Grilled chicken avocado sandwich - actually, we wanted a grilled chicken sandwich without avocado, but such an item doesn't exist so we just ordered it without. Pretty decent size breast, flavors were good. No complaints here. Crab cake sandwich - I found the flavor to be a little lacking, and for the price ($26) it seemed a little small. Got this with a side of Old Bay fries which were crispy and tasty. Bistro burger - typical fat burger that you expect in places like this. Asked for it cooked medium but it was closer to well-done. Still retained some moisture, thankfully. Half bacon bianca / half matchbox meat pizza - this was a pretty sizeable pizza with a nice crust. The meat was kind of unevenly distributed, and on the bianca side the arugula was curiously piled up on a small section instead of being evenly distributed. The pizza, in generally, was kind of salty. Prices were a little higher than I would prefer to pay for food of this type and caliber, but I guess it's hard to know what's a fair price with the cost of good and labor increasing across the board. Service was friendly but really slow, especially given that there were few other diners in the restaurant at that particular hour. Been several years since we've been to this location. So it is time for an update. Need to call out that they do fish well. Not for the pizzas, but for mains and salads. Salmon and tuna are spot on. Not overcooked, but very flavorful. Pizza is the star here. They are among the best of the chains in the DMV area. Check out the pesto chicken and the spicy meatball. Both drop flavor bombs! Nice crust too. Drinks menu isn't large, but has plenty of good choices for wine, beer and cocktails. The One Loudoun location is large and often busy on weekends. Matchbox is fairly good overall. I've been to the McLean location as well and it's crazy how different they both look from each other. We just did a to-go order today and got a large pepperoni pizza as well as a chicken Cobb salad. The food was good. I wouldn't say great because the pizza felt a little lacking but it won't ever compare to New York pizza lol. They use thin crust for their pizza and pretty good pepperonis. The crispy chicken Cobb salad is actually pretty flavorful. I'd easily order again although I don't think it earns its $21 price tag. Food was ready in about 15-20 mins so it was ready by the time we drove there. I'd recommend trying it if you have a craving for pizza. read more

Matchbox has become your run of the mill chain restaurant, so I probably shouldn't have expected too much. Still, I just hope the mini burger to be a bit more flavorful. Fried onions also flavorless. While I appreciate the flavor and chewy nature of the bacon Bianca pizza, I gotta say, the pizza is a bit too chewy to my taste, we are not paying for jaw exercise here. Good services. One was not only rocking her side of the bar, but also clearing out almost all of the tables next to the bar. The other offered the worst service I have ever experienced in any restaurant or bar in over 30 years. *Dishes from last customer being left on the bar next to us the entire time we were there, check. *Giving us no untensil, check *Frequently having to ask for additional refills, check *Not helping out his peer staff, check Oh and the final kicker *Over-serving a customer to the point I saw the customer physically assault three girls at the end of the bar by trying to kiss them without their permission, check. It is not that I am saying I will never come back in, but it won't be for a while. If I ever see that bartender again behind the bar, I'll immediately leave. Then when two did and said they would be back, ended up not making it back. We were ready to walk when Gabriel stopped by after seeing we hadn't been served at all. He helped get us taken care of--even moved us to a better table after one opened, ultimately taking over our table. When our food took forever, he stayed on top of it and worked with the manager to make it right on our check. (It's clear the new brunch buffet needs some settling into.) So thankful for his help! We decided to try out Matchbox for the first time this past weekend. It wasn't busy at all, they had us seated upstairs. They don't have a restroom upstairs so you have to walk downstairs to utilize the facilities if needed. Our waiter immediately informed us that he was new.. It was a rough start. The Sprite was awful, they had to take care of the machine (I guess the Sprite flavor was completely out). Getting our order in took a little longer than I would've preferred. Food was brought to us pretty quickly after it was ordered, everything was cooked and prepared wonderfully. We all enjoyed all the dishes! Fries and onion straws were amazing! Waffles were bomb! Mini burgers were fantastic The chicken/avocado was average I'd say. The kale on the sandwich was extremely bitter and made the sandwich taste awful, so I removed the kale and the rest was good :) Overall, we'd recommend Matchbox! Considering it was one of our waiters firsts shifts, he did a terrific job and fixed the sprite issue quickly. Of course, that wasn't a big deal, it can happen. The food was extremely pricey though, $90 for 3 people to eat the food pictured. Also! Make sure you compare your bill to the menu prices, they were over charging the chicken and waffles by $5. Came here on a Thursday evening after going to the One Loudon Carnival. Not busy at all and got a table right away. The server was so attentive and made sure our orders were in exactly as we ordered them. He even checked on my daughter's meal when it didn't come out at the same time and let us know that they had remade the fries because they were too burnt the first time. Quick summary: Food - 4 stars Value - 3 stars Atmosphere - 2 stars Service - 2 stars We came here after flying home from Europe, so admittedly we were a bit jet-lagged and tired. So...that's my one caveat to this review. The hostess seemed new but was nice, and she got us seated quickly. We then waited for a bit over 10 minutes for a waiter before I asked the hostess to find her. Which, she did, and was very apologetic. This is despite having had menus and we're all looking up, clearly ready to order. Another three minutes and our waiter came. She was pleasant enough and took our order. My wife had baked chicken (moist and good, nothing spectacular, skimpy sides}, my son a cheese pizza (very basic soft-crust pizza), my daughter a steak (cooked well despite being thin, skimpy sides), and I had the fish and chips (fried with fresh oil, tasty, pretty basic). We were almost done with our meal (eating slowly) before our waiter checked on us. This was despite multiple empty glasses and two of us wanting to order a refill and another beer. Ordered, and the beer came out almost ten minutes later, after we were finished eating. So, food was the saving grace here. It all tasted fine, was hot, and everyone's order arrived at the same time. The value was mixed, only because a rib-eye that clocks in at less than 8 ounces, a half-cup of mashed potatoes and four asparagus spears shouldn't cost almost $40 in a casual restaurant. It was enough for a small, 11-year-old girl. A grownup would need to order appetizers or more food. Atmosphere was that of a typical restaurant. It screamed "this is a place to eat, not sit and socialize". So, if it's designed to push food...the food needs to be fast and good. However, we're parents in our early 50s, so we're not looking for a Dave and Busters/Chuck E. Cheese environment. HOWEVER, the one picture I'm including is one of the long table next to us, which had not been bussed after the last party left, and was quickly becoming the Island of Misfit Dishes. I looked around, and there were several other tables that had the remnants of long-passed diners. The service. Again, we were tired after 13 hours of travel. However, we had already managed our own expectations based on that, so initial contact should be made within five minutes. A greeting would be fine. A drink order would be phenomenal. I watched waiters, bussers, hosts, and I think a manager delivering food. It may have been an efficiency problem (that's on the staff) or a staffing problem (that's on the manager). However, most of the tables in our area, better than 2/3, were empty. If the place had been slammed, I could see all of those times being extended by at least double (20 minutes for initial contact, 30 for drinks, 60 for food). But, it's in a busy shopping area, so maybe overflow from surrounding restaurants can keep it afloat. Finally, upon leaving, there was no hostess at the stand to say thanks for goodbye. Primacy and recency: you remember the first thing you experience, and the last. It starts and ends with the host, or first contact with your waiter. First and last impressions are lasting. Because of this, it reminded me of an upscale military dining facility. Get in, eat your food, leave. Would I go back? No, because it's out of the way, and it was a stop of convenience. If I were in the area? Maybe, but it would be long after my memory of this experience had faded, or another location helped to redeem this visit. Sunday funday lead us to Matchbox and thankfully so. We opted for outdoor seating to enjoy the weather and street entertainment. We were seated promptly, and greeted by our server. It took a minute to sort through the various options, but our server assured us the crab cake sandwich and brick oven pizzas were the way to go. She was right! The crab cake sandwich was all crab and no filler, perfectly situated on a toasted brioche bun, served with a side of French fries seasoned to perfection. The Fire Smoke pizza was delish! Ewww. After seeing their weekend buffet on TikTok and Facebook, we were really looking forward to going. First problem, the menu on their website has not been updated to match the current buffet menu and most of the items we went for were no longer available. Second, we decided to go a la carte and the only item my daughter wanted was the biscuits, the buffet is open until 5 pm but at 2 pm they were out. Third and the reason for one star and why we won't be back, when we unwrapped the utensils from the napkins, mine had food on the fork handle and my daughterknife was covered in food from the tip to the handle on both sides. So not only are they not properly cleaning their silverware, but someone wrapped clearly filthy silverware in napkins and placed them on the table. Unsanitary and disgusting. read more
