My family and I went out for dinner for my wife's 52nd birthday. Me, my son, and my other son all got the "Double Bacon Cheeseburger"; my wife got salmon, and my daughter got the "Bistro Burger". When the food came out, all the double bacon cheeseburgers only had one patty with 2 pieces of bacon and an egg. Soon after the food was served, our waitress came over to our table see how our food was. I told her that it only had one patty on each burger (my two sons and mine). The waitress said: "So we call it the 'Double Bacon Cheeseburger' because of the toppings" referring to the bacon and egg, which makes no sense in my opinion. Soon after that, the manager came over to see how the food was. I told her: "We're disappointed about the burgers because it's called a 'Double Bacon Cheeseburger' and it's supposed to have 2 patties on them". The manager said: "Oh well there is an option to buy a second patty, but I will tell the chef that" I then said, "Is it free?" and she shook her head. Maybe they should rename it the "Bacon Cheeseburger" Instead of the "Double Bacon Cheeseburger". Overall, the food was tasty and delicious, but we didn't expect the "Double Bacon Cheeseburger" to only have one patty on the burger. Visited on a Friday night and it was easy to get a table for two after 8 PM. The bar area is clearly an excellent spot for locals to hang out on the weekends, but is far enough from the dining room as to not interrupt your dining experience. My only ick was that the food was ehh. The scallops dish was way too heavy with the creamed corn & the salmon entree dish was overcooked (we did forget to ask for a specific temperature, but also note that usually servers ask temperature preference for salmon). The wine prices are a little egregious for the offerings (almost $20 for a 9oz of Kim Crawford? Get real and add an Oregon Sav Blanc instead) Lastly, the donuts we had tasted like they were made in old frying oil, or at least in oil that was used to fry onions. If you're looking for an excellent bar for happy hour brunch options, or dinner for the family (pizza and sliders are amazing!!) I would recommend this matchbox. Service was horrible and slow. Sudden change in policy stating a required 20% gratuity and not allowed to split checks for parties of more than 8 was upsetting. Plenty of places have a minimum gratuity amount for large parties.... but when there are only 7 adults and the rest of the party are infants/toddlers... it is unacceptable. Not to lention that our service was absolutely horrible. missing items, not coming back to check on us, taking 30 minutes to take our order when we knew before we ordered drinks what we all wanted but were told she had to our drinks in first... and then not come back to take our food orders until after all the drinks were out and more. Overall I am very disappointed in the downward spiral of the service and time it takes to dine at the restaurant. We have been frequenting this location for a long time, and the last 3 visits have gotten worse and worse. I haven't dined at Matchbox forever. The location in Rockville, MD used to be my spot. When I pass their location at One Loudoun, I didn't think to dine there again until my friend suggested. The pizza and our appetizer selections were as good as I remember. And the service here is attentive and honest! My friend and I were discussing the jumbo lump crab + corn pizza (listed as new item) since we haven't tried crab on pizza before. Our server talked about the matchbox meat as one of their popular items so he thought our discussion was over that item. Long story short, the pizza that we did not intend to order arrived to the table. Our server and management apologized and gave us the pizza that we wanted free of charge. In addition, our server was wonderful. He refilled our water several times and checked on us often. Food wise, the matchbox meat with the pepperoni, sausage and bacon has always been one of my favorites. I loved the crab + corn pizza with the old bay and ricotta cheese. The fried calamari was elevated by the sweet and tangy jalapeño jelly. The arancini with the crispy fried risotto and cheese was light and definitely worthy for an appetizer as it's a perfect size and delicious. The excellent service here and continually good food might make me a fan of this chain again. read more

This is the fourth Matchbox we've visited. The other three were---the one in Chinatown, the one on 8th Street, SE by the Eastern Market Metro station and the one in the Mosaic District. This one in One Loudoun is our least favorite. We were here on a Saturday around 5:30 p.m. At that time, they were doing a brisk business but we were seated immediately. Like all the other Matchbox restaurants, the acoustics aren't good thus it was loud. However, we did like the seating arrangement which, surprisingly, was the best of the four. They had a good number of four tops and we were able to sit at one. We never liked being crammed into a two top that's along a long banquette. So, it was nice to not feel so cramped. Service was excellent. We were seated and in a very short time our server, Andrei, came to our table. He gave us the rundown on the specials and which were his favorite entrees, then took our drink orders. While we were waiting for our drinks, another server came along and asked if we had been taken care of. We did appreciate that. For drinks, I was hoping to have their pomegranate martini as it is one of my all time favorite mixed drinks. Matchbox always did this drink very well. However, it was no longer on the drink menu. I picked a drink called "Patio Pounder Lemonade" which consists of: "house infused watermelon vodka, lemonade, fresh watermelon". Although, it was a good if weak drink, I wished that they had muddled the watermelon better. At the bottom of the glass, there ends up being some large pieces. My husband had a glass of Coke. We ordered our usual Matchbox meal. For a starter, we get 6 mini-burgers. These are quite good, as a rule. They consist of: "hand pattied certified angus beef, toasted brioche, pickles and onion strings". You get your choice of cheese and we chose cheddar. Now they are asking if you want your burgers pink or not pink. We chose pink. They came out, for the most part, pink with a couple being over cooked. When pink, they are juicy---so juicy that my husband got some on his shirt! We always like the onion strings that are served on the side. However, we think that they gave us way too many this time around. Next, we got a small margherita pizza. Normally, we find it to be very flavorful. The crust has a bit of char on it that adds to the flavor. However, this time the pizza had way too much sauce and hardly any cheese, which was a disappointment. Being that this Matchbox is deep into suburbia, you find a lot of families with young kids here which can add to the noise level. So, keep that in mind ;) Eh...we're parents and grandparents so it's not like we don't understand... So...while we give them high marks for the excellent service, the kitchen was slow and the food just wasn't up to Matchbox standards. Next time we want Matchbox, we'll go to another one. Wow went for happy hour- all I can say is we will never do that again!!! The hostess was so rude! They were not busy but for some reason she could only sit us at the bar. The bartender told us to pick a booth we could sit anywhere in that area. So beware of the redhead hostess! She is not going to accommodate your request - even when I asked for a booth in the bar area. Our order was wrong - and then we could never catch a waiter to get our final bill. Remember I said they weren't busy - they had plenty of staff talking to each other - but helping customers was not part of their plan! My family and I were here for lunch with this winter as this had been our go-to spot for years - sadly a horrible experience transpired and it seems that experience is now the standard. Our waited emerged and instantly something was amiss - we could instantly tell he did not want to be there. He was inpatient about the indecisiveness of our kids when they wanted to order and offered no answers to any of our questions let alone specials. We were seated in the area where the bar is; As such we ordered cocktails; 15 minutes in and the cocktails were nowhere to be seen. The Waiter came back to "check" on us. I asked him about the drinks; annoyed - he shrugged and said he didn't know but the bar was "busy." It wasn't at all - we were sitting right there and there was not a soul at the bar. The food came out - incorrect (not even the correct dishes). Unapologetically the waiter just said to "hold on." At this point I pleaded for our drinks - still no drinks. Out correct food orders came - 20 minutes later. Still no drinks - not even water. At this point I walked up to the bar and order our drinks. Annoyed by this, the waiter said that we "still had to pay for our previous drink orders." I shrugged this off thinking that we would just have these as our second round. After we ate our lunch, the drinks didn't show - only our bill with drink orders that we hadn't received. We were not yet ready to leave. At this point, realizing something was horribly amiss. I confronted the waiter this time and ask how he is able to justify charging us for drinks that he refused to bring us. He couldn't and said this is "the way it is" - whatever that meant. I asked to speak to the manager. She was absolutely. I help and reluctantly agreed to "waive" the charges of the drinks that were never brought to us. She was unapologetic, snide, and rude. And to top it all off she had the audacity to ask us if maybe there was a "language barrier" that could have caused the confusion about the drinks - we all spoke English; it's literally our mother language. If this is the way things are here, it is what it is. I just won't be doing business with them again. read more

First, let's start with the food. The food was beyond my expectation and was clearly given a lot of attention. The pizza was warm, crisp, and full of flavor! The appetizers were one of the best ones I've ever had! The menu is not the biggest, but they make up for it in the food and it's outstanding qualities. Cool spot! Great ambiance and great vibe with a nice bar area, counter seating and a restaurant side. I like the layout. Looks like they feature their brick oven pizzas which they had a nice variety of. I went with the Seared Ahi Salad which was very good. Nice twist on how it was prepared. Little heavy on the ice in the cocktails bit some nice options that were a little different. Can you say Vodka, Lemonade and Watermelon? I'm going to give Matchbox a 3-star a-ok...versus Bar Louie the bartenders actually have the capacity to have conversations, the drinks are a bit better poured and the food is certainly better. I like the front outdoor patio here...the inside can get a little loud and the bar a bit congested, so the outdoor seating is great for fresh air and actually have a conversation with my friends. When I get back to the NoVA area lately we've been coming to One Loudoun and I think Matchbox has the least annoying music, they're usually affable to have the Capitals game on, and if I can't make it downtown to see my team live, it is nice of the bars to give the locals our hockey team. Matchbox has a great variety of appetizers too. The fried chicken sandwich is enough food for two people. The fries are very good and not too greasy. Beers come out fast, well-poured, and it is nice when the bartenders remember what you are drinking so ordering another round doesn't feel like you're pulling teeth. read more

I'll preface my review by saying that I am a long-time Matchbox fan - I was previously driving over to their Merrifield location and was very pleased at the addition of Matchbox to the One Loudoun/Ashburn location. Typically, my husband and I will either eat-in or take-out their pizzas. I find them to be one of the best pizzas in NOVA... we particularly love adding the garlic puree to any/all of their pizzas. I've also had their Arancini, Ginormous Meatball, Spinach-Artichoke Dip - all incredible!! Recently, we visited Matchbox for brunch with friends. We've had their breakfast entrees on multiple occasions, but this last time was a little lacking; I'm hoping it was just an off day for the kitchen. The skillet cinnamon rolls were dry - lacking the proper amounts of both the gooey cinnamon filling and the icing. Our entrees were OK but nothing to get overly excited about (Steak and Eggs, Chicken and Waffles, etc.). Nonetheless, the service and ambiance was good, as always. We're giving five stars for their pizza, service, and drinks. Pre-Covid this was our fun happy hour spot. They made good cocktails and had a good beer selection. The star of the show is of course their pizzas. They have been On Point every time we've gone. I love the Prosciutto and Fig Pizza! Good lord!!! The sweet and savory combination on the crispy crust *chefs kiss*. The husband loves the Fire and Smoke pizza. It's spicy and oh so delicious. The only other thing we've ordered from the menu is their burger sliders. They're not bad. But I do really love the Onion Straws that come with them. read more

I ordered a mojito and it was one of the BEST I've had in a long time. I've come in previously and sat at the bar and had the prosciutto + white turkish fig pizza. It's awesome. Perfect combo of savory and sweet. This time, we sat in the section where you go to the bar and order directly and service was very good. Glad I went back here again. Probably my favorite spot in the One Loudoun area. Crab/avocado dip and that giant-ass meatball are great apps. For cocktails, the Southern Charm and their margaritas are delicious. Also have wine by the tap and great beers. I would say this place is a solid 3.25 stars overall. This is a newer location so to some degree I'm going to cut them a bit of slack. We arrived and it was nice outside and there were some people on the dining area side who were seated outside. As we get to the hostess stand we tell them how many and were told they'd seat us shortly. If the outside patio is open then I would have hoped the hostess would have offered us outdoor seating but frankly I just didn't have the energy to be annoyed enough to ask why. Shortly after we arrived there was a group with a couple of kids. The kids were mystified with sitting upstairs and the parents when checking in with the hostess proceeded to ask if the upstairs seating was available. They were told it was closed, but I did notice shortly after being seated there were people coming down and going upstairs to eat. Frankly what gives, and why was this other group told the upstairs was closed if clearly there were separate groups coming up and down from there (not cool in my book). Upon being seated it was nearly 10 minutes before a member of the waitstaff came by and almost as long to get our simple drink order. I've been to different Matchbox locations around the area several times, and wanted my husband to try this place out as he's never been. We were a party of 20 that made a reservation 2 days in advance and asked for the second floor tables, very specifically . When we arrived at the restaurant on a Sat eve at 6:45pm, we were told that the only tables they had were on the main floor by the bar. No apology, made us feel like "you take it or leave it". We understood that they perhaps could not accommodate 20 at one table, but I wish we were told ahead of time. We would have opted for a different restaurant. We did have another reservation for 20 at uncle Julios but cancelled it. We also told them that we had little kids and we're not comfortable in the bar area with the kids, but the hostess told me there was nothing crazy going on there so it was ok for the kids. However, it was super loud and we could barely hear each other. When we said that we had reserved in advance, I was deeply disappointed that the hostess/ manager told us that someone new took the reservation and they were sorry because they don't take reservations for parties of 20. They did nothing to try to accommodate us. I wish they could have moved us when tables became available, but they did absolutely nothing! We had nowhere to go on a Saturday night with 9 kids in the cold! This is not our first visit there, but don't think we will go there again! read more
