My car broke down on Tuesday morning and I had my car towed to Mastertech. A guy named Nate called me near the end of the day and asked me to go down there and pay a $700 deposit so they can start work to fix my car. Nate said that there's a good chance that the car will be ready by Wednesday, at the latest. Once they had my deposit, Mastertech took their sweet time to fix my car. Two days later, Nate called me to tell me that they need to make "additional" repairs to fix the real reason why my engine would not start - a broken distributor --- which was not even on the original estimate. This brought my total bill to almost $2000. I could have replaced my old engine with a new one for this price! After I picked up my car on Friday, my car started to shake and the engine shut off as I drove. My car's "check engine" light came on, so I took it back to Mastertech and the mechanic told me that my car's catalytic converter is broken and he can fix it for $900. This part was working fine before I took my car to Mastertech. After getting my car "fixed" here, my car's fuel economy dropped from 32 mpg to 28 mpg. Nate told me that these repairs will improve my fuel economy. That's another broken promise from Mastertech! Mastertech screwed me to make a fast buck. Please don't make the same mistake I did and AVOID MASTERTECH! Also, don't let the AAA Approved rating fool you. I've already filed a complaint with AAA. read more

Not the place to go to anymore: 1) service is bad, 2) not happy with repairs, 3) a job that was going to cost a few grand was only a minor problem that was less than 200.00 bucks to fix (Make your own conclusion from this). It also seems that when people post the truth about this place, the establishment finds friends or family members to add good reviews, don't fooled. We hope this post not be taken negatively, however, it help this establishment grown professionally and lucratively by being respectful and honest with ALL its customers. We were told to go else where and this is what we did. Its the ONE thing they did right. We will miss Lou very much who is amazing to work with, and sad we couldn't fix this directly with him for a better outcome (the one star is for Lou). We do understand that business is business and respect your professional work relationship with this shop (and that hands are just tied sometimes). Honestly this place over charges for repairs! I was quoted $1,000 to replace 8 spark plugs and wires on a f150 a while back. A few months later I called to explain a brake issue I had and could fix but just wanted to see what they would say and again....the verbal ballpark was outrageous. Bottomline...they ARE qualified to do the work BUT they just charge too much and more than likely upcharge on parts too. Even when I offered to buy the part myself from the dealership in the box.. I was told they couldn't do that. Anyhow, it might be because their overhead is expensive but either way...no matter what industry you're in you have to be fair a charge the going rate. Didn't put this review but date was around mid 2014. I called almost three hours ahead of time and yet they hadn't even started the paperwork to get me out of here. Other than the lack of scheduling I felt like the repairs were very overpriced. $140 just to get it "diagnosed" after I told them exactly what I needed repaired and then an extra 760$ odd dollars for them to rebuild a carburetor that didn't even fix the issue. If you want your car worked on and have the money to throw around then by all means bring it here but I feel like they simply rip some, not all customers, off. Dear owner of mastertech, I was just wanted to let you know I picked up my car yesterday afternoon vw jetta from Nate and couldn't have been more disappointed. I dropped car of on Thursday due to engine light being on and did diagnosis only. After finding out I would need $900 repairs and engine light would still be on due to other fault codes. I passed on repairs since the car is old I only intend on driving it a little longer. If I wanted other codes fixed it would be $150 diagnosis for each of my other codes. which I had 4. yikes. This is before any repairs are actually done. I checked other shops and dealers the most it would cost for total diagnosis is 350 at luxury car dealership. Then after showing concern of all these costs and inability to sell vehicle with engine light on Nate says one of the technicians will buy my car for a few hundreds dollars. Yes, my loss your gain. Get my car for cheap, repair on your own, then sell. To top it off I picked up my car with my kids and got in and saw I had no gas at all!how was I to drive to a gas station. no gas not a single line! I came in with a half tank by the way. I told Nate this and he says he can charge me for gas! I expected my vehicle to be returned as it came and this is common customer courtesy. I have been to every BMW dealership Service Center in San Diego County, and find myself very disappointed by the eventual lack luster repairs and constant increasing price by each one. I finally decided to contact AAA for any reputable Auto Repair Shop. AAA recommended Master Tech Auto Repair. I was hesitant in bring my car to a auto repair shop that doesn't specialize in BMW vehicle, how wrong was I. Master Tech guys are not only extremely professional, but incredibly honest and stand behind their repairs. This has been the best decision I have made. I now bring all of my vehicles to Master Tech for repairs, and has advise all of my friends (And anyone I know looking for a great auto repair shop) to take their vehicles to Master Tech, especially if they want "Worry free" repairs. I had my car towed there recently. The quote I was given sounded really high, so I researched other nearby shops what they would charge for the same work. Their price was more than double what other shops said they would charge me. The person by phone completely tried to rip me off. I reported them to the Bureau of Automotive repair, and I am going to report them to the Better Business Bureau. I don't know if it was just the person I talked to, but my experience with MasterTech Inc on Industry St was deceitful and greedy. read more

Great place. They get the job done without bending you over on the price. My check engine light came on and the alarm was for a small, intermittent fuel leak. They worked for 2 days to isolate it and figured out it was the parameters on the sensor. They upgraded not only the sensor software, but all the software in my car. Charged me $130 for all that diagnostics and what not. Not only is the check engine light off, but the car idles and runs super smooth. Very, very happy! read more

Shady place. Parent's borrowed my wife's diesel and accidentally filled it with regular gas, it died a mile later. I was at work so told them to have it towed somewhere and have the shop drain the gas tank, flush the lines, and replace the fuel filter. AAA recommended this place to them. I fully expected the bill to be expensive, maybe $400-500 sounded reasonable. I was surprised when I saw it was $900! Looked at the itemized bill, and was charged $74 for a new fuel filter (the part is $27 at the dealership) and $171 to install it (it literally takes 10 minutes, I know because I've done it myself). Even worse, when it came home I popped the hood to find the same dusty old marked up fuel filter I had installed before, they never changed it. What a bunch of theifs. I will never return and hope others know what they are up to. read more

I recently moved from Boston to Oceanside and needed to have a smog check before registering my car in California. I didn't give Mastertech much notice, but they got back to me quickly and arranged an appointment. I have to say this was a truly pleasant experience. Nate was efficient and personable (as one would expect a former Marine to be), and my car was finished promptly. It was obvious from phone conversations I could not help overhearing while I waited that this shop does quite a bit of very skilled work and are competent at what they do. I will certainly bring my car to them for servicing when it needs it. Their online appointment system is easy to use, and I appreciated their offering a coupon discount for the smog check. They also offer a shuttle service to get you home if your car will be in the shop for any length of time. Just all around great place. read more

Had trouble starting my car. Brought it in. They kept it for 24hours to tell me I had a bad car battery. I was sold a battery for $134,92. It is a very special one. Labor to change my battery $109.25. Knowing it takes maybe 15min to change one that would make it an hourly wage of $436,--. Wow!!! I went there thinking that they know what they are doing. I have a Honda, and it needed a B12 maintenance. I gave service writer N a copy of the maintenance minder list from my manual. I told him (he also asked) many times that my maintenance minder showed that my car needed a B12 maintenance. I'm not knowledgeable of cars and trusted that N would include the right services. He did put B12 under Request for Service, but then I realized that he also listed other services (for sub items 3, some of 4, and 5) that were not necessary during this scheduled maintenance according to my car's maintenance minder. I told N as soon as I realized it. Being not knowledgeable about car maintenance, I wasn't able to catch these other added services right away. I spoke with manager G, but he was just telling me all these excuses (it's already done, they recommend those other services...). He even implied that I planned on doing it; that was very upsetting when it was clearly their fault in the first place. I went there to get the right and exact service that my car needed, nothing more, nothing less. But service writer N didn't seem to know what he was doing and added all other unnecessary services. They discounted some parts in the invoice because I voiced my concerns. In the end, however, I still paid a lot more than what I should have paid for just a B12 maintenance. I now wonder how many unknowing customers they've charged for services they didn't need and didn't go there for. read more

This place Master Tech was a great place! Until now! I took my car in a few months back to have work done on it. It was not done right twice! Here I am going back again! They have a guy by the name of Nate who is very rude, discriminates, very unfriendly and show's no kind of care towards you or your car! If this business is going to stay a float, Nate has got to go! I asked to speak to the manager Lou and he would not put him on the phone. He has a very bad attitude towards customer's.The manager is great , however I do not know what he is doing allowing Nate to continue to work there. Lou has been aware of the situation and Nate continues to be the way he is towards me. This is not the first or second time this has happened. The only reason I am going back is because the work they did on my car has warranty on it and Lou is a good guy. His staff is terrible, horrible and need to provide better customer service! I have to say that if you want terrible service and be ripped off then please go to Mastertech, When my Jeep broke down and had it almost fixed but could not complete the job myself without a lift. I was able to fix my jeep enough to drive it a few short miles to Mastertech, When I got there the guy that came out was asking a thousand questions as to what happened. As I explained the guy kept impying that it might be other things wrong with it. I began to get suspicious when he said "let me see if this is something we want to get into." What! You don't want my business?? This I did not understand. So as he is taking his time talking to I don't know. I keep thinking why does he have to ask if this is something they want to get into. So after waiting fifteen minutes the guy comes back out and tells me like this. "Well just to put it on the lift we have to charge one hour of labor at $95. And if it needs a part we have to use our part. And we wont be able to get to it till tomorrow." What, I have the same part from Napa that you are going to charge me three times what I paid for it. And I know its a 5 minute job and you say you can't get to it till tomorrow. So I told the guy no way. I went one block down to LEWIS AUTOMOTIVE. The guy there comes out and says "yeah we can do it for about $50 and it will be done by 5 tonight." Now that is what I am talking about! I believe that Mastertech simply did not want my business and therefore quoted me a sky high price so I would leave.
